In this essay I elaborate on the theoretical framework – that of Millian liberalism – that Max Charlesworth brought to many public issues, including that of the relation between education and religion. I will then apply this framework to a debate in which I have been recently involved myself: a debate around the provision of religious instruction in public schools. In the first section I expound Charlesworth’s rejection of secularism in education in a liberal pluralist state and his defence of faith-based schooling. In the second section I uncover the religious motivations behind the Victorian government’s 1950 amendments to the apparently secularist Victorian Education Act of 1872. In section three, I explore the notion of secularism more fully and suggest that the struggle between those who espouse religious instruction in state schools and those who oppose it while advocating a more general form of education about religion is a symptom of a deeper tension between liberalism and communitarianism within the culture of modernist, liberal states.

Mathematical modelling is a field that is gaining prominence recently in mathematics educaiton research and has generated interests in schools as well.  In Singapore, modelling and applications are included as process componens in revised 2007 curriculum document (MOE, 2007) as keeping to reform efforst. In Indonesia, efforts to place stronger emphasis on connecting school mathematics with real-world contexts and applications have started in Indonesian primary schools with the Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) movement a decade ago (Sembiring, Hoogland, Dolk, 2010). Amidst others, modeling activities are gradually introduced in Singapore and Indonesian schools to demonstrte the relevance of school mathematics with real-world problems. However, on order for it to find a place in the mathematics classroom, ther eis a need for teacher-practitioners to know what mathematical modelling and what a modelling task is. This paper sets out to exemplify a model-eliciting task that has been designed and used in both a Singapore and Indonesian mathematics classroom. Mathematical modelling, the features of a model-eliciting task, and its potential and advice on implementation are discussed.

Introduction: Despite more that 60 years of clinical experience, the effective use of lithium for the treatment of mood disorder, in particular bipolarity, is in danger of becoming obsolete. In part, this is because of exaggerated fears surrounding lithium toxicity, acute and long-term tolerability and the encumbrance of life-long plasma monitoring. Recent research has once again positioned lithium centre stage and amplified the importance of understanding its science and how this translates to clinical practice.

Objective: The aim of this paper is to provide a sound knowledge base as regards the science and practice of lithium therapy.

Method: A comprehensive literature search using electronic databases was conducted along with a detailed review of articles known to the authors pertaining to the use of lithium. Studies were limited to English publications and those dealing with the management of psychiatric disorders in humans. The literature was synthesized and organized according to relevance to clinical practice and understanding.

Results: Lithium has simple pharmacokinetics that require regular dosing and monitoring. Its mechanisms of action are complex and its effects are multi-faceted, extending beyond mood stability to neuroprotective and anti-suicidal properties. Its use in bipolar disorder is under-appreciated, particularly as it has the best evidence for prophylaxis, qualifying it perhaps as the only true mood stabilizer currently available. In practice, its risks and tolerability are exaggerated and can be readily minimized with knowledge of its clinical profile and judicious application.

Conclusion: Lithium is a safe and effective agent that should, whenever indicated, be used first-line for the treatment of bipolar disorder. A better understanding of its science alongside strategic management of its plasma levels will ensure both wider utility and improved outcomes.

The notion of mathematical literacy advocated by PISA (OECD, 2006) offers a broader conception for assessing mathematical competences and processes with the main focus on the relevant use of mathematics in life. This notion of mathematical literacy is closely connected to the notion of mathematical modelling whereby mathematics is put to solving real world problems. Indonesia has participated as a partner country in PISA since 2000. The PISA trends in mathematics from 2003 to 2009 revealed unsatisfactory mathematical literacy among 15-year-old students from Indonesia who lagged behind the average of OCED countries. In this paper, exemplary cases will be discussed to examine and promote mathematical literacy at teacher education level. Lesson ideas and instruments were adapted from PISA 2006 released items. The potential of such tasks will be discussed based on case studies of implementing these instruments with samples of pre-service teachers in Yogyakarta.

It has long been recognised that successful mathematical learning comprises much more than just knowledge of skills and procedures. For example, Skemp (1976) identified the advantages of teaching mathematics for what he referred to as “relational” rather than “Instrumental” understanding. More recently, Kilpatrick, Swafford and Findell (2001) proposed five “intertwining strands” of mathematical proficiency, namely Conceptual Understanding, Procedural Fluency, Strategic Competence, Adaptive Reasoning, and Productive Disposition. In Australia, the new Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (F–10), which will be implemented from 2013, has adapted and adopted the first four of these proficiency strands to emphasise the breadth of mathematical capabilities that students need to acquire through their study of the various content strands. This paper addresses the question of what types of classroom practice can provide opportunities for the development of these capabilities in elementary schools. It draws on data from a number of projects, as well as the literature, to provide illustrative examples. Finally, the paper argues that developing the full set of capabilities requires complex changes in teachers’ pedagogy.

 Mathematical modelling is increasingly becoming part of an instructional approach deemed to develop students with competencies to function as 21st century learners and problem solvers. As mathematical modelling is a relatively new domain in the Singapore primary school mathematics curriculum, many teachers may not be aware of the learning outcomes and competencies needed to develop in their students during mathematical modelling. This paper reports on the assessment of two groups of Primary 5 students’ (aged 11) mathematical modelling competencies in their first attempt in completing a modelling task. The students’ competencies are assessed to be at levels 1 and 2 of a researcher-designed rubric. Findings appear to suggest that students faced particular challenges in formulating a mathematical problem from the real-world problem through making assumptions. Implications on teacher education on the facilitation of problem formulation and mathematisation during mathematical modelling at the primary level are drawn.

Background: National and international strategies to increase physical activity emphasize environmental and policy changes that can have widespread and long-lasting impact. Evidence from multiple countries using comparable methods is required to strengthen the evidence base for such initiatives. Because some environment and policy changes could have generalizable effects and others may depend on each country’s context, only international studies using comparable methods can identify the relevant differences. Methods: Currently 12 countries are participating in the International Physical Activity and the Environment Network (IPEN) study. The IPEN Adult study design involves recruiting adult participants from neighborhoods with wide variations in environmental walkability attributes and socioeconomic status (SES). Results: Eleven of twelve countries are providing accelerometer data and 11 are providing GIS data. Current projections indicate that 14,119 participants will provide survey data on built environments and physical activity and 7145 are likely to provide objective data on both the independent and dependent variables. Though studies are highly comparable, some adaptations are required based on the local context. Conclusions: This study was designed to inform evidence-based international and country-specific physical activity policies and interventions to help prevent obesity and other chronic diseases that are high in developed countries and growing rapidly in developing countries.
