Motivated by observations of the mean state of tropical precipitable water (PW), a moist, first baroclinic mode, shallow-water system on an equatorial beta-plane with a background saturation profile that depends on latitude and longitude is studied. In the presence of a latitudinal moisture gradient, linear analysis of the non-rotating problem reveals large-scale, symmetric, eastward and westward propagating unstable modes. The introduction of a zonal moisture gradient breaks the east-west symmetry of the unstable modes. The effects of rotation are then included by numerically solving the resulting eigenvalue problem on an equatorial beta-plane. With a purely meridional moisture gradient, the system supports large-scale, low-frequency, eastward and westward moving neutral modes. Some of the similarities, and some of the discrepancies of these modes with intraseasonal tropical waves are pointed out. Finally, a zonal moisture gradient in the presence of rotation renders some of the aforementioned neutral modes unstable. In particular, according to observations of large-scale, low-frequency tropical variability, it is seen that regions where the background saturation profile increases (decreases) to the east favour eastward (westward) moving moist modes.

Density reduction of automotive steels is needed to reduce fuel consumption, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Aluminum addition has been found to be effective in making steels lighter. Such an addition does not change the crystal structure of the material. Steels modified with aluminum possess higher strength with very little compromise in ductility. In this work, different compositions of Fe-Al systems have been studied so that the desired properties of the material remain within the limit. A density reduction of approximately 10% has been achieved. The specific strength of optimal Fe-Al alloys is higher than conventional steels such as ultra-low-carbon steels.

Thin film of Fe3O4 is grown on (100) oriented GaAs substrate using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The films were found to be (111) oriented. They were characterized morphologically as well as magnetically. They show Verwey transition at 120 K with the coercivity of 220 Oe at room temperature. These films were found to show magnetoimpedance effect with the ac magnetoresistance (MRac) of the order of similar to -6% at 10 MHz, at room temperature. The MRac was found to increase in low field-low frequency regime and decrease in low field high frequency regime.

The evolution of deformation texture in a Ni-60Co alloy with low stacking fault energy and a grain size in the nanometre range has been investigated. The analyses of texture and microstructure suggest different mechanisms of deformation in nanocrystalline as compared to microcrystalline Ni-60Co alloy. In nanocrystalline material, the mechanism responsible for texture formation has been identified as partial slip, whereas in microcrystalline material, a characteristic texture forms due to twinning and shear banding.

High-power voltage-source inverters (VSI) are often switched at low frequencies due to switching loss constraints. Numerous low-switching-frequency PWM techniques have been reported, which are quite successful in reducing the total harmonic distortion under open-loop conditions at such low operating frequencies. However, the line current still contains low-frequency components (though of reduced amplitudes), which are fed back to the current loop controller during closed-loop operation. Since the harmonic frequencies are quite low and are not much higher than the bandwidth of the current loop, these are amplified by the current controller, causing oscillations and instability. Hence, only the fundamental current should be fed back. Filtering out these harmonics from the measured current (before feeding back) leads to phase shift and attenuation of the fundamental component, while not eliminating the harmonics totally. This paper proposes a method for on-line extraction of the fundamental current in induction motor drives, modulated with low-switching-frequency PWM. The proposed method is validated through simulations on MATLAB/Simulink. Further, the proposed algorithm is implemented on Cyclone FPGA based controller board. Experimental results are presented for an R-L load.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) pose a high risk of exposure to the natural environment owing to their extensive usage in various consumer products. In the present study we attempted to understand the harmful effect of AgNPs at environmentally relevant low concentration levels (<= 1 ppm) towards two different freshwater bacterial isolates and their consortium. The standard plate count assay suggested that the AgNPs were toxic towards the fresh water bacterial isolates as well as the consortium, though toxicity was significantly reduced for the cells in the consortium. The oxidative stress assessment and membrane permeability studies corroborated with the toxicity data. The detailed electron microscopic studies suggested the cell degrading potential of the AgNPs, and the FT-IR studies confirmed the involvement of the surface groups in the toxic effects. No significant ion leaching from the AgNPs was observed at the applied concentration levels signifying the dominant role of the particle size, and size distribution in bacterial toxicity. The reduced toxicity for the cells in the consortium than the individual isolates has major significance in further studies on the ecotoxicity of the AgNPs. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Two new low band gap D-A structured conjugated polymers, PBDTTBI and PBDTBBT, based on 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-1H-benzod]imidazole and benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c']bis1,2,5]thiadiazole acceptor units with benzo1,2-b; 3,4-b']dithiophene as a donor unit have been designed and synthesized via a Stille coupling reaction. The incorporation of the benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c']bis1,2,5]thiadiazole unit into PBDTBBT has significantly altered the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymer. The optical band gap estimated from the onset absorption edge is similar to 1.88 eV and similar to 1.1 eV, respectively for PBDTTBI and PBDTBBT. It is observed that PBDTBBT exhibited a deeper HOMO energy level (similar to 4.06 eV) with strong intramolecular charge transfer interactions. Bulk heterojunction solar cells fabricated with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PBDTBBT: PC71BM/Al exhibited a best power conversion efficiency of 0.67%, with a short circuit current density of 4.9 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 0.54 V and a fill factor of 25%.

A sound weld was obtained between 2024-T3 Al alloy and AZ31B-O Mg alloy dissimilar metal plates of 5 mm thickness, at a rotational speed of 300 rev min(-1) and at a welding speed of 50 mm min(-1). One of the parameter studied was, the effect of interface offset variation, on the quality and properties of the welded samples and on the thickness of intermetallic layer formed in the welded samples. The intermetallic layer at the midst of the weld volume contains intermetallic compounds Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2. Highest tensile strength of 106.86 MPa, corresponding tensile joint efficiency of 44.52% and corresponding elongation 1.33% were obtained for the tensile sample, with interface offset of 0.66 mm from zero interface offset in retreating side and with approximate least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. Dissimilar friction stir welded joint samples had failed completely in brittle fracture mode; the position of tensile fracture was located at the midst of intermetallic layer, which had maximum hardness and minimum ductility. The nano hardness values fluctuate in the weld nugget owing to dynamic recrystallization of alloy materials and formation of brittle intermetallic compounds of alloy materials in the weld nugget; maximum hardness of 10.74 GPa occurred for the sample with least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. Sulfurization of Cu(In,Al)Se-2 films is carried out in an indigenously made set up at moderately low temperature. The films are sulfurized for different time durations of 15, 30, 45 and 60 min at 150 degrees C. InSe and Cu2S phases occurred in the films during the initial stage of sulfurization along with Cu(In,Al)(Se,S)(2) phase. The compositional analysis shows that the sulfur incorporation is saturated after 30 min. Crystallinity increased with the increase in sulfurization time. The band gap of the Cu(In,Al)Se-2 film increased up to 1.35 eV with the addition of sulfur. Single phase Cu(In,Al)(Se,S)(2) with high crystallinity is obtained after 60 min of sulfurization. The present study provides an extensive and detailed numerical analysis of NO chemical kinetics in low calorific value H-2/CO syngas flames utilizing predictions by five chemical kinetic mechanisms available out of which four deal with H-2/CO while the fifth mechanism (GRI 3.0) additionally accounts for hydrocarbon chemistry. Comparison of predicted axial NO profiles in premixed flat flames with measurements at 1 bar, 3.05 bar and 9.15 bar shows considerably large quantitative differences among the various mechanisms. However, at each pressure, the quantitative reaction path diagrams show similar NO formation pathways for most of the mechanisms. Interestingly, in counterflow diffusion flames, the quantitative reaction path diagrams and sensitivity analyses using the various mechanisms reveal major differences in the NO formation pathways and reaction rates of important reactions. The NNH and N2O intermediate pathways are found to be the major contributors for NO formation in all the reaction mechanisms except GRI 3.0 in syngas diffusion flames. The GRI 3.0 mechanism is observed to predict prompt NO pathway as the major contributing pathway to NO formation. This is attributed to prediction of a large concentration of CH radical by the GRI 3.0 as opposed to a relatively negligible value predicted by all other mechanisms. Also, the back-conversion of NNH into N2O at lower pressures (2-4 bar) was uniquely observed for one of the five mechanisms. The net reaction rates and peak flame temperatures are used to correlate and explain the differences observed in the peak NO] at different pressures. This study identifies key reactions needing assessment and also highlights the need for experimental data in syngas diffusion flames in order to assess and optimize H-2/CO and nitrogen chemistry. The problem of finding an optimal vertex cover in a graph is a classic NP-complete problem, and is a special case of the hitting set question. On the other hand, the hitting set problem, when asked in the context of induced geometric objects, often turns out to be exactly the vertex cover problem on restricted classes of graphs. In this work we explore a particular instance of such a phenomenon. We consider the problem of hitting all axis-parallel slabs induced by a point set P, and show that it is equivalent to the problem of finding a vertex cover on a graph whose edge set is the union of two Hamiltonian Paths. We show the latter problem to be NP-complete, and also give an algorithm to find a vertex cover of size at most k, on graphs of maximum degree four, whose running time is 1.2637(k) n(O(1)).

Towards ultrafast optoelectronic applications of single and a few layer reduced graphene oxide (RGO), we study time domain terahertz spectroscopy and optical pump induced changes in terahertz conductivity of self-supported RGO membrane in the spectral window of 0.5-3.5 THz. The real and imaginary parts of conductivity spectra clearly reveal low frequency resonances, attributed to the energy gaps due to the van Hove singularities in the density of states flanking the Dirac points arising due to the relative rotation of the graphene layers. Further, optical pump induced terahertz conductivity is positive, pointing to the dominance of intraband scattering processes. The relaxation dynamics of the photo-excited carriers consists of three cooling pathways: the faster (similar to 450 fs) one due to optical phonon emission followed by disorder mediated large momentum and large energy acoustic phonon emission with a time constant of a few ps (called the super-collision mechanism) and a very large time (similar to 100 ps) arising from the deep trap states. The frequency dependence of the dynamic conductivity at different delay times is analyzed in term of Drude-Smith model. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

In this study, we report the gas sensing behavior of BiNbO4 nanopowder prepared by a low temperature simple solution-based method. Before the sensing behaviour study, the as-synthesized nanopowder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, impedance analysis, and surface area measurement. The NH3 sensing behavior of BiNbO4 was then studied by temperature modulation (50-350 degrees C) as well as concentration modulation (20-140 ppm). At the optimum operating temperature of 325 degrees C, the sensitivity was measured to be 90%. The cross-sensitivity of as-synthesized BiNbO4 sensor was also investigated by assessing the sensing behavior toward other gases such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ethanol (C2H5OH), and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). Finally, selectivity of the sensing material toward NH3 was characterized by observing the sensor response with gas concentrations in the range 20-140 ppm. The response and recovery time for NH3 sensing at 120 ppm were about 16 s and about 17 s, respectively.

We present the experimental results of temperature dependent magnetoresistance (MR) and the magnetization studies of iron encapsulated multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polyvinyl chloride (PVC) composites with different wt% of MWCNTs. Transmission electron microscopy characterization shows that MWCNTs are encapsulated with rod-shaped iron nanoparticles of aspect ratio of similar to 3. The MR behavior of 1.9 wt% MWCNT/PVC sample shows dominance of forward scattering and wave function shrinkage whereas, weak localization and electron-electron interactions explain the MR data of higher wt% samples (9.1, 16.6 and 44.4 wt%). The composites of 4.7 and 9.1 wt% exhibit ferromagnetic behavior at all temperatures with room temperature coercivities of similar to 1036 and 628 Oe, respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Temperature dependent acoustic phonon behavior of PbWO4 and BaWO4 using Brillouin spectroscopy has been explained for the first time. Low temperature Brillouin studies on PbWO4 and BaWO4 have been carried out from 320-20 K. In PbWO4, we observe a change in acoustic phonon mode behavior around 180 K. But in the case of BaWO4, we have observed two types of change in acoustic phonon mode behavior at 240 K and 130 K. The change in Brillouin shift omega and the slope d omega/dT are the order parameter for all kinds of phase transitions. Since we do not see hysteresis on acoustic phonon mode behavior in the reverse temperature experiments, these second order phase transitions are no related to structural phase change and could be related to acoustic phonon coupled electronic transitions. In PbWO4 he temperature driven phase transition at 180 K could be due to changes in he environment around he lead vacancy (V-pb(2-)) changes the electronic states. In the case of BaWO4, the phase transition at 240 K shows he decrease in penetration depth of WO3 impurity. So it becomes more metallic. The transition at 130 K could be he same electronic transitions as that of PbWO4 as function of temperature. The sound velocity and elastic moduli of BaWO4 shows that it could be the prominent material for acousto-optic device applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
