The influence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the anodic dissolution of chromium present in UNS S31254 stainless steel (SS) in 0.15 mol L-1 NaCl at 37.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C has been studied, using anodic potentiostatic polarization curves and optical emission spectroscopy. Electrochemical results have shown that BSA has little effect on the transpassivation potential (E-T) and on the passivation current density values. However on the passivation range, BSA diminishes the intensity of the anodic wave seen at about E=750mV versus SCE attributed to Cr(III)/Cr(VI) oxidation. Optical emission spectroscopy results have shown that BSA prevents the anodic dissolution of chromium to occur and minimizes iron dissolution above the transpassivation potential (E=1160 mV versus SCE). Background. The androgenic hormones are important determinants of sexual behaviour in men. Testosterone replacement is important treatment for pituitary disease to maintain normal functioning. Although the physical effects of testosterone replacement have been well documented, little is known about the effects on relationships, particularly from the point of view of the sexual partners of men receiving testosterone replacement.

Aims. This paper reports a study exploring the perceptions of testosterone replacement on well-being and sexual functioning.

Methods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five men receiving testosterone implants (recipients), their permanent partners, and five recipients without partners. Recipient serum testosterone concentration was measured at 0, 1 and 4 months after testosterone implantation.

Results. The three groups reported similar effects of testosterone on well-being and sexual functioning. Recipient and partner ratings were also similar. Strength was less affected by decreasing testosterone concentration than energy in men with partners, but both strength and energy declined in men without partners. Decreased testosterone levels had a statistically significantly different effect on libido at time zero between men with and without partners (P < 0·015) and on ability to sustain an erection, but the ability to achieve an erection persisted over the 6 months in both male groups. Intercourse frequency increased from once per week at time 0 to ≥3 per week between 1 and 4 months after implant in men with partners. There were important effects of testosterone deficiency on general and sexual relationships, and these differed between men with partners and those without.

Conclusions. Testosterone has important physical and psychological benefits that may be related to the age at which testosterone replacement commences and the indications for its use. The small sample size may limit the ability to generalize the findings outside the study.

Various types of titanium alloys with high strength and low elastic modulus and, at the same time, vanadium and aluminium free have been developed as surgical biomaterials in recent years. Moreover, porous metals are promising hard tissue implants in orthopaedic and dentistry, where they mimic the porous structure and the low elastic modulus of natural bone. In the present study, new biocompatible Ti-based alloy foams with approximate relative densities of 0.4, in which Sn and Nb were added as alloying metals, were synthesised through powder metallurgy method.
The new alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying and subsequently sintered at high temperature using a vacuum furnace. The characteristics and the processability of the ball milled powders and the new porous titanium-based alloys were characterised by X-ray diffraction, optical
microscopy and scanning electron microscopy .The mechanical properties of the new titanium alloys were examined by Vickers microhardness measurements and compression testing.

Objectives
The purpose of this study was to investigate the bond strength of apatite layer on titanium (Ti) substrate coated by biomimetic method and to improve the bonding of apatite layer to Ti substrate by optimizing the alkali heat-treatment process.

Methods
Ti plates pre-treated with an alkali solution of 10 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were heat-treated at 600 °C for 1 h at different atmospheres: in air and in vacuum. A dense apatite layer formed on top of the sodium titanate layer after soaking the alkali and heat-treated Ti samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) for up to 3 weeks. The bond strengths of the sodium titanate layer on Ti substrate, and apatite layer on the sodium titanate layer, were measured, respectively, by applying a tensile load. The fracture sites were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Results
The apatite layer on the substrate after alkali heat-treatment in air achieved higher bond strength than that on the substrate after alkali heat-treatment in vacuum. It was found that the interfacial structure between the sodium titanate and Ti substrate has a significant influence on the bond strength of the apatite layer.

Significance
It is advised that titanium implants can achieve better osseointegration under load-bearing conditions by depositing an apatite layer in vivo on a Ti surface subjected to alkali and heat-treated in air.

Current orthopaedic biomaterials research mainly focuses on designing implants that could induce controlled, guided and rapid healing. In the present study, the surface morphologies of titanium (Ti) and niobium (Nb) metals were tailored to form nanoporous, nanoplate and nanofibre-like structures through adjustment of the temperature in the alkali-heat treatment. The in vitro bioactivity of these structures was then evaluated by soaking the treated samples in simulated body fluid (SBF). It was found that the morphology of the modified surface significantly influenced the apatite-inducing ability. The Ti surface with a nanofibre-like structure showed better apatite-inducing ability than the nanoporous or nanoplate surface structures. A thick dense apatite layer formed on the Ti surface with nanofibre-like structure after 1 week of soaking in SBF. It is expected that the nanofibre-like surface could achieve good apatite formation in vivo and subsequently enhance osteoblast cell adhesion and bone formation.

Understanding the mechanical behaviour of pure titanium (Ti) foam is crucial for the design and development of Ti foam-based load-bearing implants. In this work, pure titanium foam is fabricated by a powder metallurgical process using the space-holder technique with a spacer size of 500 to 800 µm. Experimental data from static compression testing on the Ti foam are presented. The application of theoretical formulae to predict Young's modulus and yield strength of titanium foams is also discussed. A foam with 63% porosity, 87 ± 5 MPa yield strength, and 6.5 ± 1.3 GPa Young's modulus is found to be appropriate for a number of dental and orthopaedic applications.

The original immunocompetence handicap hypothesis (ICHH) suggested that testosterone has a handicapping effect in males by both promoting the development of sexual signals and suppressing immune function. A modified version, the stress-linked ICHH, has recently proposed that testosterone is immunosuppressive indirectly by increasing production of corticosterone. To test both the original and stress-mediated versions of the ICHH, we implanted male zebra finches taken from lines selected for divergent maximum stress-induced levels of corticosterone (high, low and control) with either empty or testosterone-filled implants. Their humoral and cell-mediated immune responses were then assessed by challenge with diphtheria:tetanus vaccine and phytohemagglutinin respectively. We found no effect of the hormone manipulations on either PHA or tetanus antibody responses, but found a significant interaction between titers of both testosterone and corticosterone on diphtheria secondary antibody response; antibody response was greatest in individuals with high levels of both hormones. There was also a significant interactive effect between testosterone treatment group and corticosterone titer on body mass; the body mass of males in the elevated testosterone treatment group decreased with increasing corticosterone titer. These results suggest that, contrary to the assumption of the stress-mediated version of the ICHH, high plasma levels of corticosterone are not immunosuppressive, but are in fact immuno-enhancing in the presence of high levels of plasma testosterone. Equally, the central assumption of the ICHH that testosterone is obligately immunosuppressive is also not supported. The same individuals with the highest levels of both hormones and consequently the most robust antibody response also possessed the lowest body mass.

We examined the effects of cage size and testosterone (T) levels on basal and peak metabolic rates (BMR and PMR, respectively) and on pectoral and leg muscle masses of male house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Birds were housed either in small birdcages or in flight aviaries for at least 2 weeks prior to the initial metabolic evaluations. They were then implanted with either empty or T-filled silastic capsules and remeasured 5–6 weeks later. Birds treated with single T implants achieved breeding levels (4–6 ng/mL) and one group given double implants reached 10 ng/mL. There was no effect of T on BMR or PMR in any group studied, but there was an effect of caging. Caged birds showed significant reductions in PMR over the course of captivity, whereas PMR in aviary-housed birds were indistinguishable from their free-living counterparts. Testosterone treatment significantly increased leg muscle mass in caged birds, but had no effect on muscle mass in aviary-housed sparrows. We conclude that testosterone has no direct effect on sparrow metabolic rate or muscle mass, but may interact with cage conditions to produce indirect changes to these variables.

Recent progress in techniques of quantifying between‐individual differences of color‐based ornaments has revealed undiscovered possibilities for research in sexual selection. We present how the color spectra data can be comprehensively used for studying the importance of sexual ornaments in the black grouse and how these ornaments are related to a male condition. For this, we used both correlative field and experimental data. Field data indicated that older males had more chromatic coloration than yearlings. Blue chroma of males was correlated with male mating success. We experimentally manipulated yearling birds with testosterone implants and found that testosterone‐implanted males had impaired expression of several sexual ornaments: 10 months after the implantation, both structural‐based blue and carotenoid‐based red eye comb coloration were diminished, as well as lyre (tail) length. However, the manipulation did not affect vital traits under natural selection (wing length or body mass). Our data indicate that structural color is an important trait in sexual selection in this lekking species. Importantly, the data also indicate that male sexual ornaments are more susceptible to environmental conditions than the other male traits, thus showing their heightened condition dependency compared with the other traits mediating the honesty of signaling.

Glucocorticoids can inhibit pulsatile LH secretion and can delay or even block the preovulatory LH surge. Previous work in ovariectomized ewes has indicated that cortisol can delay the estradiol-induced LH surge in an artificial follicular phase model but the results suggest this effect may be influenced by prior exposure to ovarian steroids. Here we tested the hypothesis that this disruptive effect of cortisol on the positive feedback action of estradiol is dependent on prior exposure to the ovarian steroidal milieu of the estrous cycle. Using long-term ovariectomized ewes, sequential artificial estrous cycles were created in the anestrous season by treatment and subsequent withdrawal of progesterone (CIDRs inserted for 9 d) followed by estradiol implants simulating the pre-ovulatory estradiol rise that induces the LH surge. Following the first artificial estrous cycle, a second cycle was initiated. Progesterone was again administered for 9 d followed by a second artificial follicular phase two weeks later. Beginning 2 hr prior to estradiol administration and ending at 40 hr, animals received either a cortisol infusion (elevate plasma levels to ∼170 ng/ml) or vehicle. Jugular blood was sampled hourly to assess occurrence and timing of the LH surge. Four different treatment sequences were tested (Cycle 1-Cycle 2): cortisol-cortisol; vehicle-cortisol; cortisol-vehicle; and vehicle-vehicle (n=5-6/sequence). If prior exposure to the ovarian steroidal milieu of the estrous cycle was necessary for cortisol to interfere with the positive feedback action of estradiol, then we would predict that cortisol would only delay the LH surge when it was delivered in Cycle 2 but not Cycle 1. Our results failed to support this prediction. Cortisol delayed the surge in both cycles (p<0.01), and the extent of the delay was the same in both Cycles 1 and 2 (4 hrs). Cortisol did not significantly affect surge amplitude in either cycle. These findings reinforce our previous conclusion that cortisol can delay the estradiol-induced LH surge but they do not support the hypothesis that this action of cortisol is dependent upon exposure to the ovarian steroidal milieu of the previous estrous cycle. Open-set word and sentence speech-perception test scores are commonly used as a measure of hearing abilities in children and adults using cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. These tests are usually presented auditorily with a verbal response. In the case of children, scores are typically lower and more variable than for adults with hearing impairments using similar devices. It is difficult to interpret children's speech-perception scores without considering the effects of lexical knowledge and speech-production abilities on their responses. This study postulated a simple mathematical model to describe the effects of hearing, lexical knowledge, and speech production on the perception test scores for monosyllabic words by children with impaired hearing. Thirty-three primary-school children with impaired hearing, fitted with hearing aids and/or cochlear implants, were evaluated using speech-perception, reading-aloud, speech-production, and language measures. These various measures were incorporated in the mathematical model, which revealed that performance in an open-set word-perception test in the auditory-alone mode is strongly dependent on residual hearing levels, lexical knowledge, and speech-production abilities. Further applications of the model provided an estimate of the effect of each component on the overall speech-perception score for each child.

This paper describes a theoretical approach to compare two types of fiber reinforced composite materials for femoral component of hip implants. The natural fiber reinforced composite implant is compared with carbon fiber reinforced composite and the results are evaluated against the control solution of a metallic implant made of titanium alloy. With identical geometry and loading condition, the composite implants assumed lower stresses, thus induced more loads to the bone and consequently reduced the risk of stress shielding, whilst the natural fiber reinforced composite showed promising result compared with carbon fibers. However, natural fibers, as well as carbon fibers, lack the power to improve interface debonding due to excessive loads in interface. Nevertheless, natural fiber reinforced composite could be an appropriate alternative given its capability of tailoring and achieving the optimal fiber orientation and robust design.

This work investigated the structure and properties relationship, surface modification, biocompatibility and bioactivity of a porous Ti-Nb-Zr alloy. The porous alloy exhibited inter-connected porous structure, good biocompatibility and high mechanical strength with an elastic modulus close to that of bone. Porous Ti-Nb-Zr alloys are thus promising biomaterials for hard tissue replacement.
