The first agglutination experiments (Tables 1 and 2) showed that the serum obtained with any one strain of Leishmania, agglutinates all the others even of another species. This finding reveals the existence of a common antigen. However as the titre of agglutination did not permit a sharp differentiation of species we tried the adsorption method. The first adsorption tests made demonstrated differences in antigenic constitution between a strain of. L. donovani on one hand and strains of L. tropica or L. brasiliensis on the other. Further experiments in which L. chagasi was tested against the other species revealed that the former was antigenically different from the others. These tests were performed by adsorbing an anti-chagasi serum with organisms belonging to the other species or, conversely, adsorbing with L. chagasi sera prepared against the other species (See Tables 9 to 24). On the other hand, the adsorption of a serum prepared against one strain of l. chagasi by another of the same species showed that they had identifical antigenie constitution. These findings suggested the possibility of separating different species of Leishmania by this method. However, tests to separate the other species from one to another gave inconclusive results. (See Tables 27 to 35). It was soon observed that all the strains of L. chagasi were of recent isolation while all the others had been maintained in artificial culture media for a long time. We were led to believe that this condition was responsible for the differences in behaviour encountered. Accordingly, recently isolated strains of L. brasiliensis and L. donovani were tested and shown to be antigenically similar to strains of L. chagasi also recently isolated. The conclusion may be drawn that all strains have the same antigenic constitution when freshly isolated. It has been noted that when a serum which has been prepared against a freshly isolated is adsorbed with an old strain, the amount of agglutinins left free, is much smaller than when a serum prepared against an old strain is adsorbed with a newly isolated strain. At first, we thought to explain this by the low titre of the serum. However, the amount of agglutinins left free was not larger when higher titre serum was tested. The results do not corroborate the view of a special antigen being present in recently isolated strains (vi antige) but rather that the phenomenon is dependent on differences of the amount of the common antigen, more abundant in recent strains. In order to make this clear, experiments were made in which equal amounts of a serum prepared against a newly isolated strain were adsorbed by equal amounts, by weight, of, on one hand, a new strain, and the other an old strain. The resulting adsorbed sera were then titrated. (Table 44). Results showed that newly isolated strains adsorb a larger amount of agglutinins (Tables 44, 45). Two hypothesis have bem advanced to explain the stronger adsorbing qualities of the newly isolated strains. 1° - these strains possess larger amounts of the common antigen and 2° - they contain a vi antigen which adsorbed by the new strain together with the common antigen is the cause of their larger adsorbing capacity. To find out which of the two hypothesis corresponds to the reality a new experiment was made, similar to the one summarized in table 44. The adsorbed sera were made to act on a recently isolated strain as well as on an old one. The latter, not containing the vi antigen, the difference seen when sera act on new strains should not be observed here in the case of this antigen being responsible for the differences in adsorbing properties. The difference persisting, the indication would be that the greater adsorbing capacity of recently isolated strains was really related to larger amounts of the common antigen present (Tables 46 and 47). The results of the experiment excluded the possibility of the vi antigen being responsible. Other experiments, (Tables 48 to 53) using a 3 year old strain, demonstrated the modification in its antigenic constitution during the period it was maintained in cultures.

Two new species and three new sub-especies of the genus Gliricola are described in this paper. The former were found on a specimen of Cavia aperea from Santo Amaro, near the city São Paulo, and the latter on wild rats from several localities in Brazil. The parasites of Cavia aperea - G. spinosus and G. lindolphoi - are characterised by the male genitalia. That of G. spinosus is similar to that of G. porcelli, the type species of the genus, but is distinguished by two large hook-like spines on the copulatory sac; that of G. lindolphoi by possessing an appearence entirely its own, principally concerning the chitinous structure of the vesicula and the articulation parameres-basal plate. Several females were also found on the same host, the author inclining to consider them as G. spinosus but that might actually be G. porcelli or G. lindolphoi. The author considers the new rat parasites, and also G. fonsecai, sub-especies of G. decartatus, thus joining in a natural group closely allied forms wich may be recognised though small particularities of chaetotaxy found in the abdomen and the genital region of the females. The males are difficult to identify, although having small differences in the genitalia of some of them.

Arrangement of potassium in the tissues having been mentioned, as well as the rôle it plays in some pathological processes such as suprarenal insufficiency, anaphylactic shock and shock caused by hemorrhage or traumatism, experiences were undertaken to establish the rates of plasma potassium during bacteria infections artificially developed in rabbits by K. pneumoniae. P. aeruginosa and S. enteridits. It was concluded that during the period of the infections, the rate of potassium of the plasma increases almost immediately after the inoculation and stays high when the infections are of a serious or mortal character; the rate continue to increase until the death of the animal occurs. When these infections are not very serious, as in the cases of infections resulting from inoculations of bacteria as not recent and consequently with attenuated virulence K pneumoniae, or P aeruginosa and S enteriditis, to which rabbits are naturally very resistant, the rate of potassium of the plasma increases after an intravenous inoculation of germs according to the septicemic period of the infection; however, when, because of its natural resistance, the animal overcomes the infection, the amount of potassium gradually decreases and finally gets back to the normal rate. The action of cortin on potassium of the plasma was also tested on animals suffering from acute infections caused by K. pneumoniae, which, under normal conditions cause death of the rabbits, nor did it increase the rate of potassium of the plasma when a larger amount of bacteria (300,000,000) was inoculated. However, cortin inoculated several times prevented a higher rate of potassium in the plasma during the development of the infection when a smaller number of bacteria (150,000,000) was inoculated, which quantity, under normal conditions, always causes mortal infections. When cortin is discontinued 20 hours after the inoculation of germs, the infection increases fastly and the animal dies in a very short time. Now, if the injections of cortin continue to be given every hour until the 26th hour instead of only until the 20th hour, the amount of potassium in the plasma very high if the hormones substance is no longer inoculated gradually becomes smaller and finally comes back to the normal rate if the inoculations continue to be made; it will increase again only if the substance is no longer injected; after a few hours the injection is gone, potassium is found to come back to its former rate, and in consequence the animal is perfectly cured of an infection otherwise mortal. ln view of the results thus obtained, it was concluded that, during the development of those infections, the checking of the rate of potassium of the plasma provided a means of controlling the resistance of a body suffering from an infection, that rate increasing when the infection is developing and becoming more severe, or getting back to normal when the infection decreases. The checking of the rate of potassium of the plasma also made known the action of cortin on the tissues, which is found to control the permeability of the cells to potassium. Suggestions were made that potassium of the plasma be thereofre checked during infections in the human body, to make possible proving that the phenomena studied in those animals also take place in the human body. In case this is found to be true, we sould possess an important element to check organic vitality during infections.

In articles, already published, we have proved that the strain V. B. of Brazilian virus, goes through the placenta (Macacus rhesus) (1) and the apparently normal gastro-intestinal tube (1934-1937) (Canis familiaris) (2). Today we present the idea that the Brazilian virus can reach the milk of an animal even when the latter has only the unapparent disease. In former articles (**), we have shown that the goat (Capra hircus) can be an excellent reservoir of Brazilian virus, having the strain V. B. in its blood and presenting a Weil Felix reaction high and in group, with the disease unapparent. When the goats are bred in the laboratory, and even in some foci of the disease, they give a negative Weil Felix, being zero for all the nine strains of Proteus. In the interior of Brazil, in many localities, goats substitute cows, in supplying milk for children and adults, and in some districts goats milk is considered superior to cows milk, possessing marvellous qualities for men, women an children. Having proved, now, that goats milk can contain the virus even when the animal presents nothing clinically, and having also shown that this virus goes through the digestive tube apparently sound, it is easy to understand how infants-in-arms, that is, only a few months old, living in strictly domestic surroundings, can contract the disease; we have many such cases on record. Protocol of the experiments: Goat nº 2, white, January 1948. This animal had been inoculated with the V. B. strain of the Brazilian virus in June 1947, via intra-peritoneal, presenting nothing then, not even a feverish reaction. On that occasion it was not possible to isolate the virus of the blood, although the Weil Felix reaction was positive, high and in group. Now January 17, 1948, seven months later, the same animal was reinoculated with a semple of virus V. B. in the same manner (intra-peritoneal) two days after bringing forth two sturdy kids. The virus V. B. was obtained from guinea-pig n. 7170 whose thermic graph was as follows: Temperatura 38,8 39,1 39,5 39,4 39,8 40,4 40,2 40,1 - + Necropsy Typical lesions. The spleen weighed 5 grammes. With 3c.c. of emulsion from the nervous system of this guinea-pig, we inoculated not only the goat, as also two guineapigs, number 14 and number 5. The following is the thermic graph of one: - Guinea-pig n. 14 38,9 39,1 39,2 39.2 40,7 41,0 40,5 40,4 40,1 - + Typical lesions. Guinea-pig n. 2 presented the following thermic graph after the infective inoculation: - 39,5 39,7 39,7 39,7 39,5 39,3 39,5 39,5 39,5 etc. Clinically, this animal presented nothing unusual, feeding well and suckling the kids normally. The Weil Felix reaction was positive, in group high very similar to the reaction obtained in June 1947, with the first infective inoculation. On the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh day after the infective inoculation, we took milk from the goat and inoculated male guinea-pigs via intra-celular and via intra-peritoneal, giving 5 c.c. to each animal. Guinea-pig n. 4663, inoculated with 5 c.c. of milk, via intra-muscular, taken on the third day of the infectaive inoculation, presented the following thermic graph: - 38.8 (*) 39,1 39,0 39,1 40,1 40,1 40,8 (**) 40,8 Killed Typical deisions (***). The virus V. B. of this goat, circulated naturally in the blood up to the third day, having passed into the milk, producing nothing in the kids, on account of the natural resistance of these animals to the disease. The Weil Felix reaction and that of Widal for the Burcellas suis, abortus and militensis were negative for the goat and the kids. It is remarkable that, even with inoculation of the living virus after a period of seven months we cannot get a real and absolute immunity of sensitive animals. We shall return to this subject later. The hart Mazama simplicicornis may be a carrier of the virus in Brasil. The experimental serum against the virus of Exanthematic neotropical typhus has not protected guinea-pigs.

The author passes in review what he has observed during 44 years of clinical data, and principally, of the laboratory, completing has been published in former works on Ringworm and fungi that injure the skin and dependencies. The author refers to the debated question of the systematisation and nomenclature of the fungi or Ringworm considering the best classification to be that of R. Sabouraud. He thinks there should be an itnernational Congress of Specialists for the complete solution of the problem. He showed that, in 261 samples, the highest percentage (47,1%) was of Microsporum, followed by Trichopytons with 14,1% and in the third place, together with 11,4% Epidermophyton floccosum and Malassezia furfur. The remaining species were in a low percentage. He verified in Minas Gerais the relative rarity of Trichophyton violaceum, the culture and pathogenic power of which he studied, showing that, contrary to what has been verified in other countries (12 to 50%) and even in Brasil (S. Paulo 47%) where the Ringworm is produced by this fungi. He atributes this fact, in Minas Gerais, to the relatively small immigration of person from Europe.

In this study the employment subcentres of the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona are identified using different criteria. Once catalogued according to their nature,i.e. subcentres arising from integration and decentralisation, they are analysed to see whether their impact on population density depends on their origin. The results obtained confirm a greater impact of integrated subcentres in comparison with decentralised ones, amplified in turn by the fact that the former are further from the CBD and present a greater degree of self-containment in the labor market.

We model the joint production of entrepreneurs and workers where the former provide both entrepreneurial (strategic) and managerial (coordination, motivation) services, and management services are shared with individual workers in an output maximizing way. The static equilibrium of the model determines the endogenous share of entrepreneurs in the economy in a given moment of time. The time dynamics of the solution implies that a given growth rate in quality of entrepreneurial services contributes to productivity growth proportionally to the share of entrepreneurs at the start of the period and improvement in quality of entrepreneurial services is convergence enhancing. Model predictions are tested with data from OECD countries in the period 1970-2002. We find that improvements in quality of entrepreneurial services over time explain up to 100% of observed average productivity growth in these countries.

Report for the scientific sojourn at the Centre for Interdisciplinary studies in Environment and Development (CISED), located in Bangalore (Southern India), from September to December 2005. A field-work in the South Indian city of Chennai (former Madras) was developed to analyse the mounting urban (and peri-urban) water crisis. In view of tackling this matter, the state government has done a deal to construct a 100 million litres per day seawater desalination plant. Due to its relative energy-intensiveness (compared to conventional water supply means), the fact that such a large capacity plant will be located in poor country such as India, constitutes somewhat of a surprising novelty, as most desalination facilities in the world are to be found in the oil-rich Persian Gulf countries. This work faces the environmental impact, the energy-intensive technology required, the cost and the missed water management options

This paper studies price determination in pharmaceutical markets using data for 25 countries, six years and a comprehensive list of products from the MIDAS IMS database. We show that market power and the quality of the product has a significantly positive impact of prices. The nationality of the producer appears to have a small and often insignificant impact on prices, which suggests that countries which regulates prices have relatively little power to do it in a way that advances narrow national interest. We produce a theoretical explanation for this phenomenon based on the fact that low negotiated prices in a country would have a knock-on effect in other markets, and is thus strongly resisted by producers. Another key finding is that the U.S. has prices that are not significantly higher than those of countries with similar income levels. In this paper we define the formal and tempered Deligne cohomology groups, that are obtained by applying the Deligne complex functor to the complexes of formal differential forms and tempered currents respectively. We then prove the existence of a duality between them, a vanishing theorem for the former and a semipurity property for the latter. The motivation of this results comes from the study of covariant arithmetic Chow groups. The semi-purity property of tempered Deligne cohomology implies, in particular, that several definitions of covariant arithmetic Chow groups agree for projective arithmetic varieties.

The European Neighbourhood Policy’s birth has taken place in parallel with the renewed momentum of the European Security and Defence Policy, which has launched 14 operations since 2003. Both policies’ instruments have converged in the neighbouring area covered by ENP: Georgia, in the East and the Palestinian Territories in the South. In both cases, the Security Sector Reform strategies have been the main focus for ESDP and an important objective for ENP. In this paper, two objectives are pursued: first, to assess the EU’s involvement in both cases in SSR terms; and second, to analyse whether the convergence of ESDP operations with a broader EU neighbourhood policy implies that the former has become an instrument for the a EU external action.

Per a poder comprendre la dimensió de les possibles transformacions que Internet pot comportar, cal investigar els usos concrets de què es o ha estat objecte. En definitiva, cal realitzar investigacions empíriques que aportin informació sobre qui usa Internet, en quines circumstàncies i amb quins objectius. En aquest context, s’ha iniciat l’anàlisi en profunditat d’un cas específic de comunitat virtual de suport social creada per una persona afectada pel trastorn bipolar. L’objectiu d’una comunitat d’autoajuda virtual és proporcionar informació i recolzament emocional a través d’Internet. Mitjançant una metodologia qualitativa s’ha realitzat l’observació del fòrum virtual que penja de la pàgina web “Bipoloarweb.com”. En les investigacions del fenomen dels grups d’autoajuda a Internet, sovint s’ha destacat que a diferència dels grups ‘presencials’, aquests només poden aportar recolzament emocional i informatiu als seus membres. El tipus de recolzament instrumental o altre tipus d’assistència física, en canvi, no és possible en els casos virtuals. Els primers resultats de la recerca invaliden aquesta afirmació general ja que s’ha pogut observar episodis diferents d’ajut instrumental. En relació a la gestió d’informació i producció de coneixement, ja es pot avançar algunes qüestions interessants. En primer lloc, la quantitat i el detall de la informació que en el fòrum circula sobre el trastorn Bipolar. La majoria d’aquests coneixements, però, sorgeixen directament de compartir l’experiència diària entre els membres del grup. Tot això permet avançar la següent hipòtesi de treball pel futur: a més a més de suport emocional i instrumental, aquest grup ‘empodera’ el seus membres? Si la resposta fos positiva, el nostre cas tindria semblances amb altres fenòmens com son les associacions de malalts.

The Stanley lattice, Tamari lattice and Kreweras lattice are three remarkable orders defined on the set of Catalan objects of a given size. These lattices are ordered by inclusion: the Stanley lattice is an extension of the Tamari lattice which is an extension of the Kreweras lattice. The Stanley order can be defined on the set of Dyck paths of size n as the relation of being above. Hence, intervals in the Stanley lattice are pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths. In a former article, the second author defined a bijection Φ between pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths and the realizers of triangulations (or Schnyder woods). We give a simpler description of the bijection Φ. Then, we study the restriction of Φ to Tamari’s and Kreweras’ intervals. We prove that Φ induces a bijection between Tamari intervals and minimal realizers. This gives a bijection between Tamari intervals and triangulations. We also prove that Φ induces a bijection between Kreweras intervals and the (unique) realizers of stack triangulations. Thus, Φ induces a bijection between Kreweras intervals and stacktriangulations which are known to be in bijection with ternary trees.

Observations reported in the present paper have shown that Biomphalaria glabrata is being gradually displaced by B. straminea in coastal areas of two counties on the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, confirming former observations made in the same region.

Paragonimus rudis was found in the lungs of a giant otter Lutra (pteronura) brasiliensis by Natterer in 1828, who dissected the animal in the former capital Mato Grosso (=Vila Bela), Brazil. The flukes were described by Diesing in 1850, and redescribed by Braun in 1901. Both descriptions do not allow to identify the species. Therefore, P. rudis must be regarded a "nomen nudum". Because its rediscovery is desirable with regard to historical reasons and nomenclatoric questions, a field study was performed in Mato Grosso in 1980. Of 354 freshwater crabs from 24 localities collected and examined for parasitic infections, about 25% were found to be infected with 7kinds of trematode larvae, which differed distincly from Paragonimus-metacercariae. The question, whether P. rudis or other lung fluke species do not seem to occur or cannot be found any longer in the area investigated by us, is discussed.
