The production of ethylbenzene from the alkylation of dilute ethylene in fee off-gases with benzene has been commercialized in China over a newly developed catalyst composed of ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystallized zeolite. The duration of an operation cycle of the commercial catalyst could be as long as 180 days. The conversion of ethylene could attain higher than 95%, while the amount of coke deposited on the catalyst was only about 10 wt.%. Thermogravimetry (TG) was used to study the coking behavior of the catalyst during the alkylation of fee off-gas with benzene to ethylbenzene. Based on effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, reactants and products on coking during the alkylation process, it is found that the coking rate during the alkylation procedure follows the order: ethylbenzene > ethylene > propylene > benzene for single component, and benzene-ethylene > benzene-propylene for bi-components under the same reaction condition. Furthermore, the coking kinetic equations for benzene-ethylene, benzene-propylene and ethylbenzene were established. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A flow injection system for the determination of organophosphate and carbamate pesticides is described. A sensitive fluorescence probe was synthesized and used as the pH indicator to detect the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (ACNE). The percentage inhibition of enzyme activity is correlated to the pesticide concentration. Several parameters influencing the performance of the system are discussed. The detection limits of 3.5, 50, 12 and 25 mug/l for carbofuran, carbaryl, paraoxon and dichlorvos, in pure water, respectively were achieved with an incubation time of 10 min. A complete cycle of analysis, including incubation time, took 14 min. The detection system has been applied to the determination of carbofuran in spiked vegetable juices (Chinese cabbage and cole), achieving recovery values between 93.2 and 107% for Chinese cabbage juice and 108 and 118% for cole juice at the different concentration levels assayed. A miniaturized fluorescence detector using a high-brightness light-emitting diode as an excitation source was constructed and evaluated. A windowless flow cell based on a commercial four-port cross fitting was designed to reduce the stray-light level and to eliminate the optical alignment. The observed detection limit for fluorescein was 26 nM in the continuous-flow mode. The error in the reproducibility of the responses was evaluated by the FIA method, and was found to be within 2% RSD.

A simple fluorescence detector for capillary electrophoresis (CE) using a blue light-emitting-diode (LED) as excitation source is constructed and evaluated. An optical fiber was used to collect the fluorescence, and a flat end of the fiber was modified to spherical end, resulting in 50% increase of efficiency over the flat end. A simple device for optical alignment of the fibers and capillary column was designed. The concentration and mass detection limits for fluorescein were 1.8 x 10(-7) Mol l(-1) and 4.3 femol, respectively. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A capillary array electrophoresis system with rotary corifocal fluorescence scanner was reported. High speed direct current rotary motor combined with a rotary encoder and the reflection mirror has been designed to direct exactly the excitation laser beam. to the array of capillaries, which are symmetrically distributed around the motor. The rotary encoder is introduced to accurately orient the position of each capillary and its output signal triggers the data acquiring system to record. the fluorescence signal corresponding to each capillary. Separations of several amino acids are demonstrated by eight-channel capillary array electrophoresis built by ourselves.

The Al-pillared clay catalyst obtained by exposing activated clay powder to sulfuric acid and aluminium salts and calcining in air at 373-673 K, was found to be highly active for the title reaction. The results indicated that pillared layer clay of the mixed oxide has been employed as parent catalysts for their definite structure and special properties which can be modified by the substitution of L and B acid sites cations. Solid acid catalyst of Supported aluminium was found to be highly active and selective at the 373-473 K temperature range for heterogeneous esterification. The activity is mainly attributed to the Lewis (and a considerably small number of Bronsted) acid sites whose number and strength increased due to pillaring. The water produced in the esterification can be induced by Al3+, which makes the catalyst surface to form strong B acid. Their acidities are obtained by pH measurement. If only B acid sites are > 70%, and pH < 1 in the 2-ethoxyethanol, there exists an activity of esterification. The used catalyst gave identical results with that of the fresh one. X-ray diffraction spectra show that the composition and active phase of the used catalysts are the same as the fresh ones. The kinetic study of the reaction was carried out by an integral method of analysis. The kinetic equation of surface esterification is y = 2.36x - 0.98.

Mutation of hMLH1 gene plays an important role in human tumorigenesis. A highly sensitive single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) method for detection of the T1151A mutation in exon 12 of the hMLH1 gene was for the first time developed employing laser-induced fluorescence capillary electrophoresis (LIF-CE). Effects of the concentration of linear polyacrylamide solution, running temperature, running voltage and the addition of glycerol on SSCP analysis were investigated, and the optimum separation conditions were defined. Thirty colorectal cancer patients and eight lung cancer patients were screened and the T1151A mutation was found in four of them. Based on CE-sequencing the mutation was further confirmed. To our knowledge, this is for the first time that the T1151A mutation is found in lung cancer. Our method is simple, rapid, and highly sensitive and is well suited to the analysis of large numbers of clinical samples.

The development of a method for determining arsenic species by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) with indirect laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) is described in this paper. The buffer pH, the concentration of fluorescein, the nature and the concentration of the background electrolytes (BGEs) were defined. When 2.0 mM NaHCO3 (pH 9.28) with 10(-7) M fluorescein was used as the buffer, arsenite (As(lll), dimethylarsonic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and arsenate (As(V)) were all separated from one another. The limits of detection for the four arsenic species were p p in the range of 0.12-0.54 mg/L. This method was used in the analysis of spiked arsenic species in tap and mineral water to demonstrate its usefulness. The results showed that both the recovery and the reproducibility of the developed method were acceptable.
