ViralZone: recent updates to the virus knowledge resource.

ViralZone (http://viralzone.expasy.org) is a knowledge repository that allows users to learn about viruses including their virion structure, replication cycle and host-virus interactions. The information is divided into viral fact sheets that describe virion shape, molecular biology and epidemiology for each viral genus, with links to the corresponding annotated proteomes of UniProtKB. Each viral genus page contains detailed illustrations, text and PubMed references. This new update provides a linked view of viral molecular biology through 133 new viral ontology pages that describe common steps of viral replication cycles shared by several viral genera. This viral cell-cycle ontology is also represented in UniProtKB in the form of annotated keywords. In this way, users can navigate from the description of a replication-cycle event, to the viral genus concerned, and the associated UniProtKB protein records.

Proceedings of the 2014 Iowa Tribal Summit on Cultural Preservation and Transportation, 2014

The 2014 Iowa Tribal Summit on Cultural Preservation and Transportation was a three day event held in Ames, Iowa, where Tribal officials, transportation officials, and preservation partners sat down to discuss various topics of interest related to consultation under the National Historical Preservation Act. The goal of this Summit was for these groups to discuss and develop effective project consultation. These proceeding provide a summary of the event, as well as recommendations for how to approach similar events in the future. In sum, 13 tribal officials, 16 transportation officials, 10 preservation partners, and two moderators attended all parts of the Summit. The 2014 Summit was a successful event when assessed in terms of group participation and attendee feedback. However, all attendees agree that events such as this Summit are most effective when they occur on a somewhat regular basis, where consulting parties can have regular dialog and interaction regarding all aspects of consultation under the National Historical Preservation Act. Anàlisi del patrimoni proper com a recurs en la didàctica de les ciències socials

La pregunta inicial d’aquesta investigació rau en si el patrimoni proper és un recurs que facilita l’aprenentatge de les ciències socials als nens i nenes. Per tal de donar resposta a aquesta qüestió, s’ha estudiat la relació entre el patrimoni local i l’interès que genera. Per realitzar-ho, es van concretar uns ítems que han estat analitzats a partir d’un estudi de casos. Els participants d’aquesta investigació han estat un grup d’alumnes d’Educació Primària, els quals van realitzar una proposta didàctica on s’utilitzava el patrimoni proper com a eix vertebrador. També, han participat en aquesta investigació mestres d’escoles de Sant Celoni, els quals han expressat les vivències viscudes amb els seus alumnes en activitats que impliquen el patrimoni local. Finalment, s’ha analitzat la informació aportada per tots els participants i s’ha arribat a unes conclusions.

Diversitat cultural i matemàtiques

En aquesta recerca es presenten els resultats i les conclusions d’unes entrevistes realitzades a pares i mares d’alumnes de quart de primària de diferents orígens culturals, amb l’objectiu de descobrir el valor que cada família dóna a les matemàtiques, d’observar amb quines dificultats es troben els pares i mares quan han d’ajudar als seus fills i filles a fer els deures de matemàtiques, a més d’esbrinar quins recursos i/o estratègies tenen per ajudar-los. Per altra banda, també es vol saber si les experiències que tenen els adults en relació amb les matemàtiques afecta a l’ensenyament-aprenentatge dels seus fills i filles.

Comunicar con los visitantes: una nueva faceta profesional para los conservadores-restauradores

Heritage resources are more exposed than ever to visitors. For this reason, the transmission of cultural content is not enough: the present situation demands the inclusion of some messages able to foment a sustainable relation between the visitor and the resource. And this can best be achieved with the Preventive Difusion, a sensitizing strategy to inform and persuade visitors about the extreme fragility of the heritage resources. In addition, this strategy is a magnificent tool at the service of the corporate identity of the heritage resources and of the conservators: usually, preventive conservation actions and policies are not clear to visitors. But if they are included into the visit discourse, the public receive an accurate vi-sion of the efforts done in that sense, and it allows them to have a clear idea of these efforts, leading to the image that they have about the resource in question and, by extension, of their conservators.
