It is well known that the space-time block codes (STBCs) from complex orthogonal designs (CODs) are single-symbol decodable/symbol-by-symbol decodable (SSD). The weight matrices of the square CODs are all unitary and obtainable from the unitary matrix representations of Clifford Algebras when the number of transmit antennas n is a power of 2. The rate of the square CODs for n = 2(a) has been shown to be a+1/2(a) complex symbols per channel use. However, SSD codes having unitary-weight matrices need not be CODs, an example being the minimum-decoding-complexity STBCs from quasi-orthogonal designs. In this paper, an achievable upper bound on the rate of any unitary-weight SSD code is derived to be a/2(a)-1 complex symbols per channel use for 2(a) antennas, and this upper bound is larger than that of the CODs. By way of code construction, the interrelationship between the weight matrices of unitary-weight SSD codes is studied. Also, the coding gain of all unitary-weight SSD codes is proved to be the same for QAM constellations and conditions that are necessary for unitary-weight SSD codes to achieve full transmit diversity and optimum coding gain are presented.

Taking polycrystalline cadmium as an example and by utilizing the predicted temperature or strain rate-dependence of the (Hall-Petch) stress-grain size parameters, a reasonably quantitative explanation is given for the grain size dependence of apparent activation volume measurements. The explanation involves the theoretical relation of these measurements to single-crystal measurements.

Commercial purity (99.8%) magnesium single crystals were subjected to plane strain compression (PSC) along the c-axis at 200 and 370 degrees C and a constant strain rate of 10(-3) s(-1). Extension was confined to the < 1 1 (2) over bar 0 > direction and the specimens were strained up to a logarithmic true strain of -1. The initial rapid increase in flow stress was followed by significant work softening at different stresses and comparable strains of about -0.05 related to macroscopic twinning events. The microstructure of the specimen after PSC at 200 degrees C was characterized by a high density of {1 0 (1) over bar 1} and {1 0 (1) over bar 3} compression twins, some of which were recrystallized. After PSC at 370 degrees C, completely recrystallized twin bands were the major feature of the observed microstructure. All new grains in these bands retained the same c-axis orientation of their compression twin hosts. The basal plane in these grains was randomly rotated around the c-axis, forming a fiber texture component. The obtained results are discussed with respect to the mechanism of recrystallization, the specific character of the boundaries between new grains and the initial matrix, and the importance of the dynamically recrystallized bands for strain accommodation in these deformed magnesium single crystals. In this paper, a comparative study of thin films of Er2O3 and Gd2O3 grown on n-type Si(100) by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) under the identical conditions has been presented. beta-Diketonate complex of rate earth metals was used as precursor. Description on the evolution of the morphology, structure, optical, and electrical characteristics of films with respect to growth parameters and post-deposition annealing process has been presented. As-gown Gd2O3 films grow with <111> texture, whereas the texture of Er2O3 films strongly depends on the growth temperature (either <100> or <111>). Compositional analysis reveals that the Gd2O3 films grown at or above 500degreesC are carbon free whereas Er2O3 films at upto 525degreesC show the presence of heteroatoms and Er2O3 films grown above 525degreesC are carbon five. The effective dielectric constant is in the range of 7-24, while the fixed charge density is in the range - 10(11) to 10(10) CM-2 as extracted from the C-V characteristics. DC I-V study was carried out to examine the leakage behaviour of films. It reveals that the as-grown Gd2O3 film was very leakey in nature. Annealing of the films in oxidizing ambient for a period of 20 min results in a drastic improvement in the leakage behaviour. The presence of heteroatoms (such as carbon) and their effect on the properties of films are discussed.

This paper is concerned with the optimal flow control of an ATM switching element in a broadband-integrated services digital network. We model the switching element as a stochastic fluid flow system with a finite buffer, a constant output rate server, and a Gaussian process to characterize the input, which is a heterogeneous set of traffic sources. The fluid level should be maintained between two levels namely b1 and b2 with b1

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) electronically wired by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and in-situ transformed graphitic carbon for lithium-ion batteries are discussed here. Presence of MWCNTs up to a maximum of 0.5% in porous LiFePO4 (abbreviated as LFP-CNT) resulted in remarkable reversible cyclability and rate capability compared to LFP coated with highly disordered carbon (abbreviated as LFP-C). In the current range (30-1500) mAg(-1), specific capacity of LFP-CNT (approximate to 150-50 mAhg(-1)) is observed to be always higher compared to LFP-C (approximate to 120-0 mAhg(-1)). At higher currents of 250-1500 mAg(-1) LFP-C performed poorly compared to LFP-CNT. LFP-C showed considerable decay in capacity with increase in cycle number at intermediate high currents (approximate to 250 mAg(-1)) whereas at very high currents (approximate to 750 mAg(-1)) it is nearly zero. The LFP-CNT showed no such detrimental behavior in battery performance. The exemplary performance of the LFP-CNT is attributed to combination of both enhanced LFP structural stability, as revealed by Raman spectra and formation of an efficient percolative network of carbon nanotubes which during the course of galvanostatic cycling gets gradually transformed to graphitic carbon. The throughput-optimal discrete-rate adaptation policy, when nodes are subject to constraints on the average power and bit error rate, is governed by a power control parameter, for which a closed-form characterization has remained an open problem. The parameter is essential in determining the rate adaptation thresholds and the transmit rate and power at any time, and ensuring adherence to the power constraint. We derive novel insightful bounds and approximations that characterize the power control parameter and the throughput in closed-form. The results are comprehensive as they apply to the general class of Nakagami-m (m >= 1) fading channels, which includes Rayleigh fading, uncoded and coded modulation, and single and multi-node systems with selection. The results are appealing as they are provably tight in the asymptotic large average power regime, and are designed and verified to be accurate even for smaller average powers.

The composites consisting of amorphous matrix reinforced with crystalline dendrites offer extraordinary combinations of strength, stiffness, and toughness and can be processed in bulk. Hence, they have been receiving intense research interest, with a primary focus to study their mechanical properties. In this paper, the temperature and strain rate effects on the uniaxial compression response of a tailored bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite has been investigated. Experimental results show that at temperatures ranging between ambient to 500 K and at all strain rates; the onset of plastic deformation in the composite is controlled by that in the dendrites. As the temperature is increased to the glass transition temperature of the matrix and beyond, flow in the amorphous matrix occurs readily and hence it dictates the composite's response. The role of the constituent phases in controlling the deformation mechanism of the composite has been verified by assessing the strain rate sensitivity and the activation volume for deformation. The composite is rate sensitive at room temperature with values of strain rate sensitivity and activation volume being similar to that of the dendrites. At test temperatures near to the glass transition temperature, the composite however becomes rate-insensitive corresponding to that of the matrix phase. At low strain rates, serrated flow akin to that of dynamic strain ageing in crystalline alloys was observed and the serration magnitude decreases with increasing temperature. Initiation of the shear bands at the dendrite/matrix interface and propagation of them through the matrix ligaments until their arrest at another interface is the responsible mechanism for this. The maximal rate of a nonsquare complex orthogonal design for transmit antennas is 1/2 + 1/n if is even and 1/2 + 1/n+1 if is odd and the codes have been constructed for all by Liang (2003) and Lu et al. (2005) to achieve this rate. A lower bound on the decoding delay of maximal-rate complex orthogonal designs has been obtained by Adams et al. (2007) and it is observed that Liang's construction achieves the bound on delay for equal to 1 and 3 modulo 4 while Lu et al.'s construction achieves the bound for n = 0, 1, 3 mod 4. For n = 2 mod 4, Adams et al. (2010) have shown that the minimal decoding delay is twice the lower bound, in which case, both Liang's and Lu et al.'s construction achieve the minimum decoding delay. For large value of, it is observed that the rate is close to half and the decoding delay is very large. A class of rate-1/2 codes with low decoding delay for all has been constructed by Tarokh et al. (1999). In this paper, another class of rate-1/2 codes is constructed for all in which case the decoding delay is half the decoding delay of the rate-1/2 codes given by Tarokh et al. This is achieved by giving first a general construction of square real orthogonal designs which includes as special cases the well-known constructions of Adams, Lax, and Phillips and the construction of Geramita and Pullman, and then making use of it to obtain the desired rate-1/2 codes. For the case of nine transmit antennas, the proposed rate-1/2 code is shown to be of minimal delay. The proposed construction results in designs with zero entries which may have high peak-to-average power ratio and it is shown that by appropriate postmultiplication, a design with no zero entry can be obtained with no change in the code parameters.
