A new method for multivariable control was proposed in McFarlane and Glover (1988 CDC). This method involved shaping the open-loop singular values with pre and/or post compensators and then designing a controller to robustly stabilize a normalized coprime factorization of this weighted plant. The method has many attractive features including guaranteed loop shape and robust stability and performance. This talk will outline the rationale of this method and illustrate its use on a number of applications.

This talk describes a new version of the Multivariable Frequency Domain Toolbox for Matlab. The intellectual issue which arises here is whether there is a role for Matlab-4 GUI facilities in a Toolbox which provides relatively low-level functionality, with a correspondingly random pattern of user interaction. My belief is that there is a role, but it is very restricted: in effect only for providing convenient 'viewing' facilities for low-level objects (which are multivariable frequency responses in the case of the MFD Toolbox). There is a more obvious role for a GUI with higher-level functions, such as frequency domain identification or parametric controller optimisation.

Micro-electro-mechanical systems, MEMS, is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary technology within the general field of Micro-Systems Technology which deals with the design and manufacture of miniaturised machines with major dimensions at the scale of tens, to perhaps hundreds, of microns. Because they depend on the cube of a representative dimension, component masses and inertias rapidly become small as size decreases whereas surface and tribological effects, which often depend on area, become increasingly important. Although MEMS components and their areas of contact are small, tribological conditions, measured by contact pressures or acceptable wear rates, are demanding and technical and commercial success will require careful measurement and precise control of surface topography and properties. Fabrication of small numbers of MEMS devices designed to test potential material combinations can be prohibitively expensive and thus there is a need for small scale test facilities which mimic the contact conditions within a micro-machine without themselves requiring processing within a full semiconductor foundry. The talk will illustrate some initial experimental results from a small-scale experimental device which meets these requirements, examining in particular the performance of Diamond-Like-Carbon coatings on a silicon substrate. Detailed investigations are undertaken, for the first time, of the transmission performance of recently proposed novel Adaptively Modulated Optical OFDM (AMOOFDM) modems using Subcarrier Modulation (AMOOFDM-SCM) in single-channel, SMF-based IMDD links without optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. The cross-talk effect induced by beatings among subcarriers of various types is a crucial factor limiting the maximum achievable AMOOFDM-SCM performance. By applying single sideband modulation and/or spectral gapping to AMOOFDM-SCM, three AMOOFDM-SCM designs of varying complexity are proposed, which achieve >60Gb/s signal transmission over 20 km, 40 km and 60 km. Such performances are >1.5 times higher than those supported by conventional AMOOFDM modems.

Are there any benefits in allowing orders and products to be able to manage their own progress through a supply chain? The notion of associating (and even embedding) information management and reasoning capabilities with a physical product has been discussed for over ten years now. This talk will review the notions of product intelligence and examine the rationales for these models and the practicality of their implementation. Both theoretical and practical issues associated with product intelligence will be examined referencing a number of trial deployments in manufacturing, logistics and aerospace equipment servicing. © 2012 IFAC.

GaAs and InP based nanowires were grown epitaxially on GaAs or InP (111)B substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using Au nanoparticles as catalyst. In this talk, I will give an overview of nanowire research activities in our group. Especially, the effects of growth parameters for GaAs and InP nanowires on the crystal quality have been studied in detail. We demonstrated the ability to obtain defect-free GaAs nanowires and control the crystal structure of InP nanowires, ie, WZ or ZB, by choosing a combination of growth parameters, such as temperature, V/III ratio and nanowire diameter. © 2009 IEEE.

The drive for low emission combustion systems encourages applications using premixed flames. Yet in many applications, considerations of flame stability or mixing times lead to systems with neither premixed nor diffusion flames, which are often called technically premixed or stratified flames. In this talk we discuss the current state of understanding of the effect of mixing and extent of stratification on the structure, microstructure and dynamics of selected turbulent stratified flames. Over the past few years, a significant database of scalar and velocity data has been built to analyze the effects of unmixedness on local and global flame structure. Microscale studies of the flame structures show in detail how the effect of local stratification affects (or not!) the flame structure, flame surface density and scalar dissipation rates, and production of selected species. The experiments place exacting demands on current spectroscopic diagnostics, and reveal the progress and limits to our understanding of turbulent flames in general. The dynamics of stratified flames with respect to instabilities is also shown to be very rich, as the particular shape of the flames and the stabilization points are is significantly affected by the fuel distribution, modifying the rate and location of heat release, and thus the coupling with the surrounding acoustics and determining the onset of self-excitations.
