As duas formigas que mais comumente se associam com a mirmecofita de sub-bosque Maieta guianensis (Melastomataceac) respondem de maneiras diferentes a simulac (o) over tilde es experimentais de herbivoria. Enquanto Pheidole minutula & induzida tanto por danos fisicos e extratos de tecido foliar, Crematogaster laevis 6 induzida apenas pelos danos fisicos. Sugerimos que tal variac (a) over tildeo interespecifica em respostas induzidas e comum e pode influenciar a qualidade das defesas contra herbivoros que as formigas oferecem as plantas que elas ocupam.

Massive seed predation of Pseudobombax grandiflorum (Bombacaceae) by parakeets Brotogeris versicolurus (Psittacidae) in a forest fragment in brazil

Here we report massive seed predation of Pseudobombax grandiflorum (Bombacaceae) by Botogeris versicolurus (Psittacidae) in a forest fragment in Brazil. The intensity of seed predation was very high when compared to other studies in continuous forest, perhaps resulting from a scarcity of resources in such areas. This scarcity may limit the range of parrot's diet to a few plant species. It suggests that studies of Psittacidae seed predation may be important for conservation of some plants in fragments.

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray crystallographic analysis of the heterodimeric crotoxin complex and the isolated subunits crotapotin and phospholipase A(2)

Crotoxin, a potent neurotoxin from the venom of the South American rattlesnake Crotalus durissus terrificus, exists as a heterodimer formed between a phospholipase A(2) and a catalytically inactive acidic phospholipase A(2) analogue (crotapotin). Large single crystals of the crotoxin complex and of the isolated subunits have been obtained. The crotoxin complex crystal belongs to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2, with unit-cell parameters a = 38.2, b = 68.7, c = 84.2 angstrom, and diffracted to 1.75 angstrom resolution. The crystal of the phospholipase A(2) domain belongs to the hexagonal space group P6(1)22 (or its enantiomorph P6(5)22), with unit-cell parameters a = b = 38.7, c = 286.7 angstrom, and diffracted to 2.6 angstrom resolution. The crotapotin crystal diffracted to 2.3 angstrom resolution; however, the highly diffuse diffraction pattern did not permit unambiguous assignment of the unit-cell parameters.

Flavonols from Pterogyne nitens and their evaluation as myeloperoxidase inhibitors

A myeloperoxidase inhibitory kaempferol derivative, namely pterogynoside (1), was isolated from fruits of Pterogyne nitens, along with six known flavonols, kaempferol, afzelin, kaempferitrin, quercetin, isoquercetrin and rutin. The structures of all compounds were elucidated primarily from 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses, as well as by high resolution mass spectrometry. All flavonols were screened to identify secondary metabolites as potential myeloperoxidase (MPO) inhibitors, and at concentrations of 0.50-50 nM, quercetin (5), isoquercitrin (6) and rutin (7) exhibited strong inhibitory effects with IC(50) values of 1.22 +/- 0.01, 3.75 +/- 0.02 and 3.60 +/- 0.02, respectively. The MPO activity detected for the new derivative 1 was markedly decreased (IC(50) 10.3 +/- 0.03) when compared with known flavonols 5-7, and interestingly increased when tested against ABTS scavenging activity. Purification, partial characterization and preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis of a mannose-specific lectin from Cymbosema roseum seeds

A lectin from Cymbosema roseum seeds (CRL) was purified, characterized and crystallized. The best crystals grew in a month and were obtained by the vapour-diffusion method using a precipitant solution consisting of 0.1 M Tris-HCl pH 7.8, 8% (w/v) PEG 3350 and 0.2 M proline at a constant temperature of 293 K. A data set was collected to 1.77 angstrom resolution at a synchrotron-radiation source. CRL crystals are orthorhombic, belonging to space group P2(1)2(1)2(1). Crystallographic refinement and full amino-acid sequence determination are in progress.
