The drainage under gravity of a vertical foam film formed on a wire frame has been investigated. Dual-wavelength optical interferometry was used so that unambiguous fringe order assignments could be made, enabling absolute film thicknesses to be calculated with confidence. Films were stabilized by nonionic polypropylene glycol surfactant. Halfmicrometer silica particles with varying degrees of hydrophobicity were added to the film-forming liquid to investigate their effect on film drainage rate and stability. Hydrophilic particles had little or no effect, while hydrophobic particles slowed the drainage of the film and caused a minor increase in film lifetime, from ∼10 to ∼30 s. In both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic cases the films ruptured when they reached a thickness of ∼2 particle diameters. Particles of intermediate hydrophobicity had the most significant effect, increasing film lifetime by an order of magnitude over that for hydrophilic particles. The intermediate particles allowed films to thin down to a thickness less than the particle diameter, indicating that particles bridge across the entire film. This did not occur with more hydrophobic particles even though they were embedded in each of the two film surfaces. These results correlate well with previous literature on particle-laden foams. The film thickness and drainage measurements allow drainage mechanisms for the different particles to be identified, thus providing a mechanistic explanation for the observation by several previous authors that foams formed in the presence of particles, for example during mineral processing, have the greatest stability when the particles are of intermediate hydrophobicity.

Diel vertical migration (DVM) by zooplankton is a universal feature in all the World's oceans, as well as being common in freshwater environments. The normal pattern involves movement from shallow depths at night to greater depths during the day. For many herbivorous and omnivorous mesozooplankton that feed predominantly near the surface on phytoplankton and microzooplankton, minimising the risk of predation from fish seems to be the ultimate factor behind DVM. These migrants appear to use deep water as a dark daytime refuge where their probability of being detected and eaten is lower than if they remained near the surface. Associated with these vertical movements of mesozooplankton, predators at higher trophic levels, including invertebrates, fish, marine mammals, birds and reptiles, may modify their behaviour to optimise the exploitation of their vertically migrating prey. Recent advances in biotelemetry promise to allow the interaction between migrating zooplankton and diving air-breathing vertebrates to be explored in far more detail than hitherto.

The diel vertical migration (DVM) of the copepod Metridia pacifica was examined in Dabob Bay (47°45.05′N, 122°49.71′W), a fjord in Washington state. Although the population showed deep daytime residence (75-175 m), a proportion of the population was found in the surface waters at night. For individuals that migrated to the surface, the mean size of the oil sac was much smaller than those that remained at depth (mean lengths of oil sac 0.25 mm for individuals collected between 0 and 25 m at night, compared with 0.43 mm for individuals from between 125 and 175 m). Similarly, the C : N ratio was lower for animals collected from near the surface, indicative of their lower lipid reserves. These results suggest that individual variability in DVM was influenced by body condition, with those animals with larger lipid stores not needing to risk coming to the surface to feed at night.

Samples historically collected and analysed by the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey were used to examine long-term (1958 to 1994) patterns in the normal diel vertical migration (NDVM) behaviour of 7 copepod taxa in the North Sea: Calanus finmarchicus C5-C6; Calanus spp. C1-C4; Centropages typicus; Centropages hamatus; Temora longicornis; Acartia clausii and Para-Pseudocalanus (this last group included all Paracalanus and Pseudocalanus species). The ratio of night:day abundance near the surface was used as a measure of the extent of NDVM. For all 7 taxa, the extent of NDVM between 1958 and 1994 co-varied with the abundance of herring Clupea harengus in the North Sea. Fisheries data show that during this period the herring stock was a good indicator of the overall abundance of planktivorous fish in the North Sea. These results suggest that changes in the abundance of planktivorous fish in the North Sea over recent decades have resulted in modifications in the NDVM behaviour of many zooplankton taxa.

Plankton samples collected and analyzed by the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey were used to examine the length of time spent near the surface in the North Atlantic and the North Sea by three closely related groups of zooplankton (copepodite stages 1-4 Metridia spp., copepodite stages 5-6 Metridia lucens, and copepodite stages 5-6 Metridia longa). For all three groups, the mean daily length of time spent near the surface in each month of the year covaried seasonally with day length. In addition, the amount of time spent near the surface varied significantly between the three groups, being longest for the copepods of smallest body size (C 1-C4 Metridia spp.) and shortest for the copepods of largest body size (C5-C6 M. longa). These results support the suggestion that diel vertical migration serves to reduce the risk of mortality from visually orienting predators

Samples historically collected and analysed by the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas were used to examine temporal patterns in the near-surface abundance of copepodite stages V and VI Calanus hyperboreus (n = a total of 32836 samples; mean latitude of samples = 54* N, SD = 6.7*). The occurrence of CV and VI C. hyperboreus was largely restricted to samples collected in April, May and June. During this period there was a diel cycle in near-surface abundance which was consistent with a normal pattern of diel vertical migration. For example, CV-VI C. hyperboreus were 1.9 times more abundant at night than during the day, a difference which was highly significant (t-test, t5072 = 3.9, p < 0.001). The ratio of night:day abundance was similar in CV-VI C. finmarchicus (night:day abundance = 1.4), but markedly higher in CV-VI Metridia lucens (night:day abundance = 12.3) and CV-VI M. longa (night:day abundance = 15.0).

The archived data set collected over a 45-yr period (1948-1992) by Continuous Plankton Recorders (CPRs) towed in near-surface waters was used to investigate the diel vertical migration of the copepod Metridia lucens in the northeast Atlantic (47-63?N and 10-30?W). Although the CPR sampling intensity was uniform during the day and the night, M. lucens was caught predominantly in samples collected at night, consistent with a normal diel vertical migration pattern involving movement from greater depth during the day to shallower depths at night. The length of time spent near the surface varied seasonally and was closely correlated (r2 = 0.80) with seasonal change in length of night. The residual variation in length of time spent at the surface was nonrandom, with more time being spent at the surface in spring before the onset of the spring bloom, and less time being spent at the surface in autumn, than that predicted from the length of night at these periods. The timing of this enhanced near-surface occupation in spring varied with latitude, occurring a mean of 3.4 d later per degree of latitude.

Samples collected by continuous plankton recorders (CPRs) between 1948 and 1992 were used to describe the diel vertical migration (DVM) behavior of 41 copepod taxa in the northeast Atlantic between 45 and 55?N and 11 and 31?W. A total of 13,622 samples, each representing - 18.5 km (10 nm) of tow, were analyzed. Since CPRs are towed in near-surface waters, taxa that exhibit DVM occur predominantly in samples taken at night. Larger taxa showed significantly stronger DVM, with body size explaining 47% of the intertaxa variation in DVM. For small taxa (< 1 mm wide) the residual variation in DVM was correlated with carotenoid pigment levels but not with body morphology, with more heavily pigmented taxa exhibiting DVM. For larger taxa (> 1 mm wide) the residual variation in DVM was correlated with body morphology but not with carotenoid pigment levels, with more elongate copepods not exhibiting DVM.

We used a geolocation method based on tidal amplitude and water depth to assess the horizontal movements of 14 cod Gadus morhua equipped with time-depth recorders (TDR) in the North Sea and English Channel. Tracks ranged from 40 to 468 d and showed horizontal movements of up to 455 km and periods of continuous localised residence of up to 360 d. Cod spent time both in midwater (43% of total time) and near the seabed (57% of total time). A variety of common vertical movement patterns were seen within periods of both residence and directed horizontal movement. Hence particular patterns of vertical movement could not unequivocally define periods of migration or localised residence. After long horizontal movements, cod tended to adopt resident behaviour for several months and then return to broadly the same location where they were tagged, indicating a geospatial instinct. The results suggest that residence and homing behaviour are important features of Atlantic cod behaviour.

Various air-breathing marine vertebrates such as seals, turtles and seabirds show distinct patterns of diving behaviour. For fish, the distinction between different vertical behaviours is often less clear-cut, as there are no surface intervals to differentiate between dives. Using data from acoustic tags (n = 23) and archival depth recorders attached to cod Gadus morhua (n = 92) in the southern North Sea, we developed a quantitative method of classifying vertical movements in order to facilitate an objective comparison of the behaviour of different individuals. This method expands the utilisation of data from data storage tags, with the potential for a better understanding of fish behaviour and enhanced individual based behaviour for improved ecosystem modelling. We found that cod were closely associated with the seabed for 90% of the time, although they showed distinct seasonal and spatial patterns in behaviour. For example, cod tagged in the southern North Sea exhibited high rates of vertical movement in spring and autumn that were probably associated with migration, while the vertical movements of resident cod in other areas were much less extensive and were probably related to foraging or spawning behaviours. The full reasons underlying spatial and temporal behavioural plasticity by cod in the North Sea warrant further investigation.
