This file accompanies “NAmer2014SnowBC_Dohertyetal_v1.xlsx”, which contains data on black carbon (BC) and other light-absorbing particles in snow in Utah and Idaho, for samples collected January-March 2014 in Jan/Feb 2013 and 2014 in Utah. Data are available as an Excel file with headers, or as a comma-separated data file, with no headers. There is one entry per layer of snow sampled. All entries (other than column titles in the .xlsx) are numeric. Detailed information on our measurements can be found in a series of publications, as given below.  Description of the instrument and method used to make the measurements: Grenfell, T. C., S. J. Doherty, A. D. Clarke, and S. G. Warren, Spectrophotometric determination of absorptive impurities in snow, Appl. Opt., 50(14), pp.2037-2048, 2011.  Summary and discussion of dataset “NAmer2014SnowBC_Dohertyetal.xlsx”, including maps of sample locations: Doherty, S. J., D. A. Hegg, P. K. Quinn, J. E. Johnson, J. P. Schwarz, C. Dang and S. G. Warren, Causes of variability in light absorption by particles in snow at sites in Idaho and Utah, J. Geophys. Res. Atmos., 121, doi:10.1002/2015JD024375, 2016. Note that the measurement and analysis techniques used to produce these data were also used in a broad Arctic survey (2006-2010) of BC and other light-absorbing particles snow, as reported here: Doherty, S. J., S. G. Warren, T. C. Grenfell, A. D. Clarke, and R. E. Brandt: Light-absorbing impurities in Arctic snow, Atmos. Chem. Phys., 10, 11647-11680, doi:10.5194/acp-10-11647-2010, 2010. http://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/10/11647/2010/acp-10-11647-2010.html

One of the most important determinants of dermatological and systemic penetration after topical application is the delivery or flux of solutes into or through the skin. The maximum dose of solute able to be delivered over a given period of time and area of application is defined by its maximum flux (J(max), mol per cm(2) per h) from a given vehicle. In this work, J(max) values from aqueous solution across human skin were acquired or estimated from experimental data and correlated with solute physicochemical properties. Whereas epidermal permeability coefficients (k(p)) are optimally correlated to solute octanol-water partition coefficient (K-ow) and molecular weight (MW) was found to be the dominant determinant of J(max) for this literature data set: log J(max)=-3.90-0.0190MW (n=87, r(2)=0.847, p

The development of solutions that prevent dehydration or promote adequate re-hydration play a vital role in preventing fatigue during exercise, however, the methods commonly used to assess the hydration ability of such solutions are invasive and often assess the components of absorption separately. This paper describes using a non-invasive deuterium tracer technique that assesses gastric emptying and intestinal absorption simultaneously to evaluate the uptake of water during rest and exercise. The kinetics of absorption are further examined by mathematical modelling of the data generated. For the rest group, 0.05 g/kg of body weight of deuterium, contained in gelatine capsules, was ingested with ordinary tap water and saliva samples were collected every 5 min for one hour while the subject remained seated. The deuterium was administered as above for the exercise group but sample collection was during one hour of exercise on a treadmill at 55% of the subject's maximum heart rate. The enrichment data for each subject were mathematically modelled and the parameters obtained were compared across groups using an independent samples t-test. Compared with the rest condition, the exercise group showed delayed absorption of water as indicated by significant differences for the modelling parameters t(2), t(1/2), maximum absorption rate and solution absorption amount at t(1). Labelling with a deuterium tracer is a good measure of the relative rate ingested fluids are absorbed by the body. Mathematical modelling of the data generates rates of maximum absorption and allows calculation of the percentage of the solution that is absorbed at any given time during the testing period. Skin penetration of the tetrapeptide Ac-Ala-Ala-Pro-Val-NH2 was assessed. This peptide sequence fits the P-P-1 subsites of elastase and inhibits human neutrophil elastase competitively. Consequently this peptide may be therapeutically useful in a variety of inflammatory disorders, including psoriasis. in which elevated levels of human neutrophil elastase have been reported. Peptide penetration was assessed across whole human skin, whole skin with the stratum corneum removed by tape stripping and epidermis, which had been removed from the dermis by heat separation. The influence of 75% aqueous ethanol as a potential penetration enhancer of the tetrapeptide across epidermis was also assessed. The tetrapeptide did not penetrate whole human skin or epidermis, even under the influence of 75% aqueous ethanol. However, when the stratum corneum was removed tetrapeptide flux of 73.39 mug cm(-2) h(-1) was achieved. The study demonstrates that the stratum corneum is the main barrier to tetrapeptide skin penetration and must be overcome if therapeutically relevant amounts of tetrapeptide are to be delivered to the skin.

A comparison has been made between the spectroscopic properties of the laser dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) in mesostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) and in ethanol. Steady-state excitation and emission techniques have been used to probe the dye-matrix interactions. We show that the TiO2-nanocomposite studied is a good host for R6G, as it allows high dye concentrations, while keeping dye molecules isolated, and preventing aggregation. Our findings have important implications in the context of solid state dye-lasers and microphotonic device applications. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The development of near-resonant holographic interferometry techniques for use on flows seeded with atomic species is described. A theoretical model for the refractivity that is due to the seed species is outlined, and an approximation to this model is also described that is shown to be valid for practical regimes of interest and allows the number density of the species to be determined without knowledge of line-broadening effects. The details of quantitative number density experiments performed on an air-acetylene flame are given, and a comparison with an alternative absorption-based experiment is made.
