Crystallographic and magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds (PrxSm1-x) Mn2Si2 (x = 0 similar to 0.80) have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, XPS and magnetic measurements. All the compounds crystallize in ThCr2Si2-type structure. Substitution of Pr for Sm leads to the increase of the lattice constants and the transition from antiferromagnetism (AFM) to ferromagnetism (FM). The valence-fluctuation in the compounds was observed and the relation between the change of electron binding energy and magnetic properties was also discussed preliminarily.

The second-order nonlinear optical tensor coefficients of both KTiOPO4 (KTP) and KTiOAsO4 (KTA) are calculated from the chemical bond viewpoint. All constituent chemical bonds of both crystals are considered, and contributions of each type of bond to the total linearity and nonlinearity are determined. Calculated results agree satisfactorily with experimental data in both signs and numerical values. The calculation shows that though TiO6 groups and P(1)O-4 or As(1)O-4 groups have relatively larger linear contributions, they can only produce an advantageous environment for KOx (x = 8, 9) groups and P(2)O-4 or As(2)O-4 groups in nonlinear optical contributions. The origin of nonlinearity of KTP family crystals comes from the KOx (x = 8, 9) and P(2)O-4 groups in their crystal structures. Furthermore, the difference in optical nonlinearities of KTP type crystals is analyzed, based on the detailed calculation of nonlinearities of both KTP and KTA. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

In this paper, a series of Sr1-xLaxNiAl11O19 catalysts were synthesized and their chemical and physical properties were investigated by XRD, UV-DRS, H-2-O-2 titration, TPR and Py-IR techniques. The experimental results show that the Sr1-xLaxNiAl11O19 catalysts have a magnetoplumbite structure and Ni ion is shared between tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel blocks, and the amount of nickel ions in the tetrahedral environment increases with the increase of x value in Sr1-xLaxNiAl11O19. The TPR study revealed that the reducibility of the series of the catalysts depends strongly on the substitution value x, that is, a low temperature peak appears for samples without substitution, in case of samples with x = 1 high temperature peak appears, and for samples with 0substitution of Sr2+ by La3+ shows no significant effect on the catalytic activity for reforming reaction due to the similar dispersion of Ni particle. Whereas, the substitution has a great effect on the acidity of catalyst, the number of acidic sites and amount of the carbon deposition on the catalyst surface. So it is evident that carbon deposition in carbon dioxide reforming of methane can be suppressed by decreasing the acidity of the complex oxides catalysts.

Some novel macrocyclic (arylene ether sulfone) containing cardo groups and (arylene ether ketone sulfone) oligomers have been synthesized in high yields by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 4,4'-difluorophenylsulfone with bisphenols in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate under a pseudo-high-dilution condition. Detailed structural characterization of these oligomers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (f.a.b.-m.s.), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (n.m.r.) and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis confirms their cyclic nature, and the composition of the oligomeric mixtures is provided by g.p.c. analysis. Ring polymerization of cyclic oligomers 3a to a high molecular weight polymer with M-w of 59.1 k was achieved by heating at 290 degrees C for 40 min in the presence of a nucleophilic initiator. The valences of Cu in Y1-xGaxBa2Cu3O6+y have been investigated by using complex chemical bond theory The results for the valences of Cu(1) and Cu(2) in the calculation suggest that the holes introduced by calcium substitution only reside in CuO2 planes, and there is a competition mechanism for the hole density in CuO2 planes between Ca doping and oxygen depletion. These conclusions are satisfactorily in agreement with experiments.

The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s with liquid crystallinity were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone with 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by DSC, PLM and WAXD, The copolymers containing 70% biphenol formed nematic phase while the copolymer containing 50% biphenol exhibited smectic texture, The banded textures were formed after shearing the sample in the nematic liquid crystalline state. The identification of the structures in each mesogenic phase has been carried out by combining WAXD with PLM and DSC.

A new monomer, sodium 5,5'-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1), was synthesized by sulfonation of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with fuming sulfuric acid. Poly(ether ether ketone)s containing sodium sulfonate groups were synthesized directly via aromatic nucleophilic substitution from the sodium sulfonate-functionalized monomer 1 and Bisphenol A (3) in the presence of potassium carbonate in dimethyl sulfoxide. The polycondensation proceeds without any side reactions. The differential scanning calorimetry measurement indicated that the polymers are amorphous and the glass transition temperatures increase with the content of sodium sulfonate groups in the polymer chain. The degree of substitution with sodium sulfonate groups has strong influence on their thermal stability and solubility.

The valences of Cu and bond covalencies in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6+y, have been investigated using complex chemical bond theory, This theory is the generalization of Phillips, Van Vechten, Levine, and Tanaka's scheme. The results indicate that the valences of Cu(1) and Cu(2) in our calculation agree well with those obtained by the bond valence sum method. The valences of Cu(1) and Cu(2) in our calculation also suggest that the holes introduced by Ca substitution only reside in CuO2 planes and there is a competing mechanism for the hole density in CuO2 planes between,Ca doping and oxygen depletion. These conclusions are in satisfactory agreement with experiments. The calculated ordering of covalencies is Cu(1)-O(4)>Cu(1)-O(1)>Cu(2)-O(2,3)>Cu(2)-O(1)>Ca-O>Y-O similar to Ba-O, regardless of the Ca doping level and oxygen content. [S0163-1829(98)03325-6].
