Four novel screw-like Ru(II) complexes, tris(5-lauramide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate, tris(5-myristamide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate, tris(5-palmitamide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate and tris (5-stearamide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate have been efficiently synthesized. They are confirmed by the techniques of IR, H-1 NMR, H-1-H-1 COSY and ES-MS. Also, their electrochemistry, fluorescence and electrochemiluminescence are reported.

A novel graft-like copolymer of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) with polybutadiene (PB) was synthesized by polymerization of styrene in a toluene solution of PB using the cyclopentadiene titanium trichloride (CpTiCl3)/methylaluminoxane (MAO) catalytic system. The effect of PB on the crystallization behavior of the copolymer was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Hydrogenation of the sPS/PB copolymer with p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazide afforded a PE-like copolymer.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTLcs) CoMAlCO3, where M stands for Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, or Fe, were synthesized by coprecipitation. After calcination at 450 degrees C, they became mixed oxides with spinel-like structure. The mixed oxides were characterized by XRD, BET, chemical analysis and the adsorption of NO. The catalytic decomposition of NO and its reduction by CO were studied over these mixed oxides. The study showed that the catalytic activity for removal of NO, was very high. The reaction mechanism is proposed and the effects of d-electrons of the transition metals on catalytic activity are elucidated.

Sandwich-like heteropoly molybdochromophosphates of supermolecular compound [NH3(CH2)(6)NH3](2)H-3{Cr[Mo6O15(HPO4)(H2PO4)(3)](2)}. 4H(2)O has been hydrothermally synthesized and the single crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystal data are has follows: triclinic, space group P (1) over bar a=12.156(2), b=12.809(3), c=13.530(3) Angstrom, alpha=102.46(3)degrees, beta=93.67(3)degrees, gamma=93.46(3)degrees, V=2046.9(7) Angstrom(3), Z=1, M-r=2768.69, D-c=2.246 g/cm(-3), F(000)=1337, mu=2.162 mm(-1). The structure has been refined to R=0.0666 and wR=0.1745 by full-matrix least-squares method. The title compound is composed of 1, 6-diaminohexane, water molecules, and {Cr[Mo6O15(HPO4)(H2PO4)(3)](2)}(7-) anion which consists of six oxygen atoms from two [Mo6P4] units with a sandwich-like transition metal atom Cr located at the center of symmetry.

A new butterfly-like cluster [WOS3Cu2(PPh3)(2)(Py)(2)] was obtained by reacting [WOS3Cu2(PPb3)(3)] with pyridine. The crystal structure of the cluster has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The compound shows an unusual folded structure, in which two 4-coordinate Cu atoms are bound to the WOS3 moiety via two S-S edges.

Four novel polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of two new double betaine derivatives have been synthesized and structurally determined. In [{La-2(L-1)(2)(H2O)(9)}(n)]Cl-6n. 2nH(2)O (1) and [{Tb(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. nH(2)O (2) (L-1 =4,4'-trimethylenedipyridinio-N,N'-diacetate), the lanthanide(III) ions form a two-dimensional layer in which each pair of lanthanide(III) ions is bridged by two syn-anti mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups. Adjacent layers are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions, to form a three-dimensional network. Isomorphous [{Ln(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. 5nH(2)O (Ln=La, 3; Ln=Tb, 4; L-2=1,3 bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) each contain a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel-like dimeric unit in which each pair of adjacent metal atoms is bridged by four syn-syn mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups that are oriented nearly perpendicular to each other about the metal-metal axis. Neighboring dimeric subunits are bridged by a pair of flexible LL ligands into a polymeric chain. Adjacent chains are inter-linked by hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions into a three-dimensional network. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel europium(III) coordination polymer with a new double betaine derivative, {[Eu(L')(NO3)(H2O)(3)](NO3)(2). 3.5H(2)O}(n) (L-1 = 1,3-bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) has been synthesized and its structure determined. Its luminescence properties have also been studied. The title metal carboxylate coordination polymer contains centrosymmetric dimeric units in which each pair of metal ions is linked by a pair of syn-anti carboxylato-O,O' groups, and each pair of such dimeric units is bridged by the backbones of L-1 ligands to form infinite double chains in the b direction. These metal carboxylate chains are further cross-linked by hydrogen bonds among both coordinated and discrete nitrate anions, aqua ligands and lattice water molecules to form a three-dimensional network. Luminescent data show that the L-1 ligand is a good energy donor and the complex has a relatively long luminescent lifetime.

The reaction of [Cp*IrCl2](2) with dilithium 1,2-orthocarborane-1,2-diselenolate 3 leads to the green 16-electron diselenolene complex [Cp*Ir{Se2C2(B10H10)}] (4) which takes up two-electron ligands such as trimethylphosphane to give the 18-electron diselenolate derivative [Cp*Ir(PMe3)-{Se2C2(B10H10)}] (5). The molecular structures of 4 and 5 were determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The Se-77-nuclear shielding in 4 is lower by almost 500 ppm relative to that in 5.

The complex, K2.5Na2NH4[Mo2O2S2(cit)(2)]. 5H(2)O (1), was obtained by crystallization from a solution of (NH4)(2)MoS4, potassium citrate (K(3)cit) and hydroxyl sodium in methanol and water under an atmosphere of pure nitrogen at ambient temperature. The crystals are triclinic, space group , a = 7.376 (3)Angstrom, b = 14.620 (2) Angstrom, c = 14.661 (1) Angstrom, alpha = 71.10 (1)degrees, beta = 81.77 (1)degrees, gamma = 78.27(2)degrees, R = 0.0584 for 2545 observed (I > 2 sigma (I)) reflections. Single crystal structure analysis reveals that citrate ligand coordinated to molybdenum atom through two carboxylato oxygens and one deprotonated hydroxyl oxygen together with two bridging sulfur atoms and a terminal oxygen atom completes distorted coordination octahedron around each molybdenum atom. Principal dimensions are: Mo = O-t, 1.707 Angstrom (av); Mo-S-b, 2.341 Angstrom (av); Mo-O-(hydroxyl), 2.021 Angstrom (av); Mo-O(alpha-carboxyl), 2.1290 Angstrom (av) and Mo-O(beta-carboxyl), 2.268(av) Angstrom. IR spectrum is in agreement with the structure.

By using the dielectric description theory of ionicity of solids, chemical bond properties of rare earth ions with various ligands are studied. Calculated results show that chemical bond properties of the same rare earth ion and the same ligand in different crystals depend on the crystal structures. In a series of compounds, chemical bond properties of crystals containing different rare earth ions are similar. The magnitude of covalency of chemical bonds of trivalent rare earth ions and various ligands has an order like F

A comb-like polymer host(CBPE) as polymer electrolyte was synthesized by reacting poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer(EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The synthetic process was followed by IR and the amorphous product characterized by IR and elemental analysis. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log sigma vs. 1/(T - T-0) may exhibit dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T-0. The comb-like polymer is a white rubbery solid which dissolves in acetone. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Reaction of YbCl3 with 3 equimolar CpNa (Cp = cyclopentadienide) in THF, followed by treatment with trans-(+/-)-N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine led to the isolation of first mono(cyclopentadienyl) lanthanide Schiff base complex, [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)](2) (mu-THF)(THF) (1). The molecular structure of 1 shows that it is a dimer in which the two [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)] units connecting via a bridging THF oxygen and two bridging oxygen atoms from Schiff base ligands. Hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTLcs): CoMAlCO3-HTLcs (M=Cu2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Fe3+), were synthesized by coprecipitation and characterized with XRD and IR. The catalysis of these HTLcs and their calcined products were studied in the p-cresol oxidation, and the effects of the temperature of HTLcs calcination, the ratio of Co/Cu, different promoters, reaction temperatures and reaction times on reaction activities were investigated. It has been found that calcined HTLcs have higher activity than uncalcined samples and mechanical mixed oxides in this reaction. The best yield was obtained from the CoCuAlCO3-HTLc (Co/Cu/Al=3:1:1) calcined at 450 degrees C. A tentative reaction mechanism was also proposed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTLcs): (CuMAlCO3)-Al-II-HTLcs, where M-II=Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Fe2+, were synthesized by coprecipitation and characterized with XRD and IR. The catalysis of these HTLcs was studied in the phenol hydroxylation by H2O2 in liquid phase; then the effects of the ratio of Cu/Al, reaction temperature, solvent and pH of medium were investigated. It has been found that the uncalcined HTLcs have higher activities than those of calcined samples in this reaction. The catalyst CuAlCO3-HTLcs having Cu/Al=3 efficiently oxidized phenol and gave high yields of the corresponding diphenols in appropriate reaction conditions.
