The Fonualei Spreading Center affords an excellent opportunity to evaluate geochemical changes with increasing depth to the slab in the Lau back-arc basin. We present H2O and CO2 concentrations and Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf and U-Th-Ra isotope data for selected glasses as well as new Hf isotope data from boninites and seamounts to the north of the Tonga arc. The Pb and Hf isotope data are used to show that mantle flow is oriented to the southwest and that the tear in the northern end of the slab may not extend east as far as the boninite locality. Along the Fonualei Spreading Center, key geochemical parameters change smoothly with increasing distance from the arc front and increasing slab surface temperatures. The latter may range from 720 to 866 degrees C, based on decreasing H2O/Ce ratios. Consistent with experimental data, the geochemical trends are interpreted to reflect changes in the amount and composition of wet pelite melts or super-critical fluids and aqueous fluids derived from the slab. With one exception, all of the lavas preserve both U-238 excesses and Ra-226 excesses. We suggest that lavas from the Fonualei Spreading Center and Valu Fa Ridge are dominated by fluid-fluxed melting whereas those from the East and Central Lau Spreading Centers, where slab surface temperatures exceed similar to 850-900 degrees C, are largely derived through decompression. A similar observation is found for the Manus and East Scotia back-arc basins and may reflect the expiry of a key phase such as lawsonite in the subducted basaltic crust.

A field and market basket study (similar to 1300 samples) of locally grown fruits and vegetables from historically mined regions of southwest (SW) England (Cornwall and Devon), and as reference, a market basket study of similarly locally grown produce from the northeast (NE) of Scotland (Aberdeenshire) was conducted to determine the concentration of total and inorganic arsenic present in produce from these two geogenically different areas of the U.K. On average 98.5% of the total arsenic found was present in the inorganic form. For both the market basket and the field survey, the highest total arsenic was present in open leaf structure produce (i.e., kale, chard, lettuce, greens, and spinach) being most likely to soil/dust contamination of the open leaf structure. The concentration of total arsenic in potatoes, swedes, and carrots was lower in peeled produce compared to unpeeled produce. For baked potatoes, the concentration of total arsenic in the skin was higher compared to the total arsenic concentration of the potato flesh, this difference in localization being confirmed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS). For all above ground produce (e.g., apples), peeling did not have a significant effect on the concentration of total arsenic present.

Tin, as a constituent of bronze, was central to the technological development of early societies, but cassiterite (SnO2) deposits were scarce and located distantly from the centres of Mediterranean civilizations. As Britain had the largest workable ore deposits in the ancient Western world, this has led to much historical speculation and myth regarding the long-distance trading of tin from the Bronze Age onwards. Here we establish the first detailed chronology for tin, along with lead and copper deposition, into undisturbed ombrotrophic (rain-fed) peat bogs located at Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor in the centre of the British tin ore fields. Sustained elevated tin deposition is demonstrated clearly, with peaks occurring at 100-400 and 700-1000 calendar years AD - contemporaneous with the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods respectively. While pre-Roman Iron Age tin exploitation undoubtedly took place, it was on a scale that did not result in convincingly enhanced deposition of the metal. The deposition of lead in the peat record provides evidence of a pre-Roman metal-based economy in southwest Britain. Emerging in the 4th century BC, this was centred on copper and lead ore processing that expanded exponentially and then collapsed upon Roman colonization during the 1st century AD. Background:
Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer in women and has poor
long-term survival, in part, due to chemoresistance. Tumour hypoxia is associated with
chemoresistance in ovarian cancer. However, relatively little is known about the genes
activated in ovarian cancer which cause chemoresistance due to hypoxia. This study
aimed to firstly identify genes whose expression is associated with hypoxia-induced
chemoresistance, and secondly select hypoxia-associated biomarkers and evaluate their
expression in ovarian tumours.
Design:
Cisplatin-sensitive (A2780) and cisplatin-resistant (A2780cis) ovarian cancer
cell lines were exposed to combinations of hypoxia and/or cisplatin as part of a matrix
designed to reflect clinically relevant scenarios. RNA was extracted and interrogated
on Affymetrix Human Gene arrays. Differential gene expression was analysed for cells
exposed to hypoxia and/or treated with cisplatin. Potential markers of chemoresistance
were selected for evaluation in a cohort of ovarian tumour samples by R
T-PCR.
Results:
A wide range of genes associated with chemoresistance were differentially
expressed in cells exposed to hypoxia and/or cisplatin. Selected genes [ANGPTL4,
HER3 and HIF-1
α
] were chosen for further validation in a cohort of ovarian tumour
samples. High expression of ANGPTL4 trended towards reduced progression-free and
overall survival. High expression of HER3 trended to increased progression-free but
reduced overall survival, while high expression of HIF-1
α
trended towards reduced
progression-free and increased overall survival.
Conclusions:
In conclusion, this study has further characterized the relationship between
hypoxia and chemoresistance in an ovarian cancer model. We have also identified many
potential biomarkers of hypoxia and platinum resistance and provided initial validation
of a subset of these markers in ovarian cancer tissues.

Vector space models (VSMs) represent word meanings as points in a high dimensional space. VSMs are typically created using a large text corpora, and so represent word semantics as observed in text. We present a new algorithm (JNNSE) that can incorporate a measure of semantics not previously used to create VSMs: brain activation data recorded while people read words. The resulting model takes advantage of the complementary strengths and weaknesses of corpus and brain activation data to give a more complete representation of semantics. Evaluations show that the model 1) matches a behavioral measure of semantics more closely, 2) can be used to predict corpus data for unseen words and 3) has predictive power that generalizes across brain imaging technologies and across subjects. We believe that the model is thus a more faithful representation of mental vocabularies.

The work of the Proyecto Arqueológico Chihuahua (PAC) has played an integral role in defining the origins and characteristics of the Chihuahua culture area, also known as the Casas Grandes Regional System. PAC has developed a critical suite of radiocarbon dates for the southern zone, undertaken the first substantial investigations of the Viejo period (ca. A.D. 800textendash1200 or 1250) since the early 1960s, and added to knowledge of the southern Medio period (ca. A.D. 1250textendash1450). The project has also elucidated the chronology, settlement patterns, subsistence strategies, and technology for both periods. Results of our research indicate continuity between the Viejo period, characterized by small pithouse settlements, and the pueblo focused Medio period in the southern zone, with some poorly understood external influences from both western Mesoamerica to the south and the American Southwest to the north shaping events within the area.

A total of 107 putative ericoid mycorrhizal endophytes were isolated from hair roots of Calluna vulgaris from two abandoned arsenic/copper mine sites and a natural heathland site in southwest England. The endophytes were initially grouped as 14 RFLP types, based on the results of ITS-RFLP analysis using the restriction endonucleases Hinf I, Rsa I and Hae III. ITS sequences were obtained for representative isolates from each RFLP type and compared phylogenetically with sequences for known ericoid mycorrhizal endophytes and selected ascomycetes. The majority of endophyte isolates (62-92%) from each site were identified as Hymenoscyphus ericae, but a number of other less common mycorrhizal RFLP types were also identified, all of which appear to have strong affinities with the order Leotiales. None of the less common RFLP types was isolated from C. vulgaris at more than one field site. Neighbour-joining analysis indicated similarities between the endophytes from C. vulgaris and mycorrhizal endophytes isolated from other Ericaceae and Epacridaceae hosts in North America and Australia.

The Axe Valley has long been known for its Palaeolithic finds, particularly from the site at Broom. While research has continued at Broom, other sites have also been investigated in the valley as part of the English Heritage-managed and ALSFfunded project ?Palaeolithic Rivers of South West Britain? (PRoSWeB). This project was completed in March 2007. Since then, research focussing on the Quaternary geology and Palaeolithic archaeology of the southwest region has been continued at selected locations by Prof. Tony Brown (University of Southampton), Dr Laura Basell (University of Oxford) and Dr Phil Toms (University of Gloucestershire), with assistance from Dr Ramues Gallois and Dr Richard Scrivener (formerly British Geological Survey).

Introduction: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly mostly due to the development of neovascular AMD (nAMD) or geographic atrophy (GA). Intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents are an effective therapeutic option for nAMD. Following anti-VEGF treatments, increased atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and choriocapillaries that resembles GA has been reported. We sought to evaluate the underlying genetic influences that may contribute to this process. Methods: We selected 68 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from genes previously identified as susceptibility factors in AMD, along with 43 SNPs from genes encoding the VEGF protein and its cognate receptors as this pathway is targeted by treatment. We enrolled 467 consecutive patients (Feb 2009 to October 2011) with nAMD who received anti-VEGF therapy. The acutely presenting eye was designated as the study eye and retinal tomograms graded for macular atrophy at study exit. Statistical analysis was performed using PLINK to identify SNPs with a P value < 0.01. Logistic regression models with macular atrophy as dependent variable were fitted with age, gender, smoking status, common genetic risk factors and the identified SNPs as explanatory variables. Results: Grading for macular atrophy was available in 304 study eyes and 70% (214) were classified as showing macular atrophy. In the unadjusted analysis we observed significant associations between macular atrophy and two independent SNPs in the APCS gene: rs6695377: odds ratio (OR) = 1.98; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.23, 3.19; P = 0.004; rs1446965: OR = 2.49, CI: 1.29, 4.82; P = 0.006 and these associations remained significant after adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: VEGF is a mitogen and growth factor for choroidal blood vessels and the RPE and its inhibition could lead to atrophy of these key tissues. Anti-VEGF treatment can interfere with ocular vascular maintenance and may be associated with RPE and choroidal atrophy. As such, these medications, which block the effects of VEGF, may influence the development of GA. The top associated SNPs are found in the APCS gene, a highly conserved glycoprotein that encodes Serum amyloid P (SAP) which opsonizes apoptotic cells. SAP can bind to and activate complement components via binding to C1q, a mechanism by which SAP may remove cellular debris, affecting regulation of the three complement pathways.

Discussion forums have evolved into a dependablesource of knowledge to solvecommon problems. However, only a minorityof the posts in discussion forumsare solution posts. Identifying solutionposts from discussion forums, hence, is animportant research problem. In this paper,we present a technique for unsupervisedsolution post identification leveraginga so far unexplored textual feature, thatof lexical correlations between problemsand solutions. We use translation modelsand language models to exploit lexicalcorrelations and solution post characterrespectively. Our technique is designedto not rely much on structural featuressuch as post metadata since suchfeatures are often not uniformly availableacross forums. Our clustering-based iterativesolution identification approach basedon the EM-formulation performs favorablyin an empirical evaluation, beatingthe only unsupervised solution identificationtechnique from literature by a verylarge margin. We also show that our unsupervisedtechnique is competitive againstmethods that require supervision, outperformingone such technique comfortably.

The UK’s transportation network is supported by critical geotechnical assets (cuttings/embankments/dams) that require sustainable, cost-effective management, while maintaining an appropriate service level to meet social, economic, and environmental needs. Recent effects of extreme weather on these geotechnical assets have highlighted their vulnerability to climate variations. We have assessed the potential of surface wave data to portray the climate-related variations in mechanical properties of a clay-filled railway embankment. Seismic data were acquired bimonthly from July 2013 to November 2014 along the crest of a heritage railway embankment in southwest England. For each acquisition, the collected data were first processed to obtain a set of Rayleigh-wave dispersion and attenuation curves, referenced to the same spatial locations. These data were then analyzed to identify a coherent trend in their spatial and temporal variability. The relevance of the observed temporal variations was also verified with respect to the experimental data uncertainties. Finally, the surface wave dispersion data sets were inverted to reconstruct a time-lapse model of S-wave velocity for the embankment structure, using a least-squares laterally constrained inversion scheme. A key point of the inversion process was constituted by the estimation of a suitable initial model and the selection of adequate levels of spatial regularization. The initial model and the strength of spatial smoothing were then kept constant throughout the processing of all available data sets to ensure homogeneity of the procedure and comparability among the obtained VS sections. A continuous and coherent temporal pattern of surface wave data, and consequently of the reconstructed VS models, was identified. This pattern is related to the seasonal distribution of precipitation and soil water content measured on site.
