The distribution of calcareous nannofossils is documented for the middle Eocene through lowermost Miocene cores from Ocean Drilling Program Holes 699A and 703A in the subantarctic South Atlantic. The detailed nannofossil biostratigraphies established, in combination with published magnetostratigraphic data, have provided a fairly detailed age model for each hole. This study suggests that the middle Eocene through lowermost Miocene section from Hole 699A is virtually complete. A major hiatus has been identified in Hole 703A in the earliest Oligocene, coincident with n abrupt cooling in the Southern Ocean. Comparison of the nannofossil datum ages calibrated with magnetostratigraphy in the two holes with those from mid and southern high latitudes demonstrates synchroneity or diachroneity for the following nannofossil datums: (1) The last occurrence (LO) of Reticulofenestra bisecta is a consistent and reliable biostratigraphic marker for the Oligocene/Miocene boundary from mid- to high latitudes but not in extreme high latitudes; (2) similarly, the LO of Chiasmolithus altus has a consistent age of about 26.8 Ma in the Southern Ocean except in the extreme high latitudes where the datum appears to be substantially younger; (3) the LO of Reticulofenestra umbilica is about 32.9 Ma in the Southern Ocean; (4) the LO of Isthmolithus recurvus is reliable and consistent from mid through high latitudes and correlates with the lower part of Subchron C12R (~34.4 Ma); (5) the LO of Reticulofenestra oamaruensis has a consistent age of 36.0 Ma at all four Southern Ocean sites that have yielded a lower Oligocene magnetostratigraphy; (6) the first occurrence (FO) of R. oamaruensis is at 38.4 Ma in the Southern Ocean; and (7) the FO of I. recurvus shows some age variations from mid to high latitudes and the age range is 38.5-39.0 Ma at the five Southern Ocean sites.

Well-preserved diatoms are present in high sedimentation rate Pleistocene cores retrieved on Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Legs 151, 152, 162 and IMAGES cruises of R/V Marion Dufresne from the North Atlantic. Investigation of the stratigraphic occurrence of diatom species shows that the youngest diatom event observed in the area is the last occurrence (LO) of Proboscia curvirostris (Jousé) Jordan and Priddle. P. curvirostris is a robust species that can easily be identified in the sediments, and therefore can be a practical biostratigraphic tool. We have mapped its areal distribution, and found that it stretches from 40°N to 80°N in the North Atlantic. Further, we have correlated the LO P. curvirostris to the oxygen isotope records of six cores to refine the age of this biostratigraphic event. The extinction of P. curvirostris is latitudinally diachronous through Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 9 to 8 within the North Atlantic. This is closely related to the paleoceanography of the area. P. curvirostris first disappeared within interglacial MIS 9 (324 ka) from the northern areas that are most sensitive to climatic forcing, like the East Greenland current and the sea-ice margin. It survived in mid-North Atlantic until the conditions of the MIS 8 (glaciation) became too severe (260 ka). In the North Pacific at ODP Site 883 the LO P. curvirostris falls within MIS 8. The observed overlap in age between the North Atlantic and the North Pacific strongly suggests that the extinction of P. curvirostris is synchronous between these oceans.

We demonstrate size fluctuations of the calcareous nannofossil genus Reticulofenestra in Upper Pliocene sediments from the North Atlantic Ocean and clarify a characteristic evolutionary trend of this genus. Four bioevents, which are based on abrupt decreases in maximum size and on changes of morphologic features of Reticulofenestra specimens, are detected in the sediments. They are the disappearance of R. minutula var. A, the termination of Acme Zone II of R. minutula var. C, the disappearance of R. minutula var. B, and the termination of Acme Zone I of R. minutula var. C, in ascending order. These are nearly synchronous and traceable events.

This paper reports results of geological studies carried out during two marine expeditions of R/VAkademik M.A. Lavrent'ev (Cruises 37 and 41) in 2005 and 2006 at the underwater Vityaz Ridge. Dredging has yielded various rocks from the basement and sedimentary cover of the ridge within three polygons. On the basis of radioisotope age determinations, petrochemical, and paleontological data all the rocks have been subdivided into the following complexes: volcanic rock of Paleocene, Eocene, Late Oligocene, Middle Miocene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene; volcanogenic-sedimentary rocks of Late Cretaceous - Early Paleocene, Paleogene (undifferentiated), Oligocene - Early Miocene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene. Determinations of age and chemical composition of the rocks have enabled to specify formation conditions of the complexes and to trace geological evolution of the Vityaz Ridge. Presence of young Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanites allows to conclude about the modern tectono-magmatic activity of the central part of the Pacific slope of the Kuril Islands.

Results of a lithological study of bottom sediments in the Syrian region of the Mediterranean Sea during Cruise 27 of R/V Vityaz (1993) are reported. Suspended sediment discharge of the Nile River are of the greatest importance for terrigenous sedimentation in the SE part of the Mediterranean Sea, especially in deep-sea areas. Suspended load entering from the Syrian catchment area plays an important role in formation of recent shelf and slope deposits. Supply of aerosols from Syrian and Arabian deserts was distinguished by the patchiness of surface distribution of quartz. During Late Quaternary accumulation of terrigenous material supplied from both the Syrian and the Nile drainage areas was irregular. Sedimentation was remarkably enhanced during sapropel formation 7000-9000 years BP.

New geological and geophysical data on the Amirante Arc, which locates to the south of the Seychelles Islands, are presented. These data were obtained by Pacific Oceanological Institute during the 33-rd cruise of R/V Professor Bogorov in 1990. The Amirante Arc represents a seamount chain, which has submeridional strike and total length about 400 km. To the west of the Amirante Arc there are a deep sea trench and a back-arc basin, i.e. this area is characterized by structural elements associated with the subduction zone of Western Pacific type. According to our data the Amirante Arc is composed by tholeiites of ocean plateau type. This facts are evidences that the Amirante Arc differs from typical Pacific island arcs. This gives an opportunity to distinguish a special type of oceanic structures, i.e. non-volcanic (amagmatic) ridges. The Amirante Ridge has been probably formed as a result of oceanic crust heaping due to horizontal displacements of its blocks in the process of spreding ridge formation in the Indian Ocean during Cretaceous-Paleogene.

The extant nannofossil biostratigraphic and biochronologic framework for the early-middle Pleistocene time interval has been tested through the micropaleontological analysis of globally distributed high-quality low- to mid-latitude deep-sea successions. The quantitative temporal distribution patterns of relative abundances of selected taxa were reconstructed in critical intervals, and the following biohorizons were defined: first occurrence of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa spp. (bmG); last occurrence of Calcidiscus macintyrei (tCm); first occurrence of large Gephyrocapsa spp. (blG); last occurrence of large Gephyrocapsa spp. (tlG); first occurrence of Reticulofenestra asanoi (bRa); re-entrance of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa spp. (reemG) and last occurrence of Reticulofenestra asanoi (tRa). The detailed patterns of abundance change at these biohorizons were used to generate a detailed biostratigraphy, and the biostratigraphic data were transformed into a precise biochronology by means of correlation to isotope stratigraphies and astronomical timescales. The degree of isochrony or diachrony of the biohorizons was evaluated. Biohorizons tlG and tRa are isochronous occurring close to marine isotope stages (MIS)55 and MIS 22, respectively, and bmG and blG are slightly diachronous on the order of 30-40 kyr, whereas biohorizons tCm, reemG and bRa are confirmed as diachronous on the order of 100, 80 and 60 kyr, respectively. Some of the events are clearly controlled by environmental conditions, e.g. the last occurrence of R. asanoi, related to significant environmental changes associated with the first large-amplitude glaciation of the late Quaternary, MIS 22.

The book presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies, carried out in the Cape Verde fault zone in the 3-rd cruise of R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov (1986). Detailed characterization of bottom relief, thickness and structure of the sedimentary cover, magnetic field, crust structure, lithology and stratigraphy of sediments, petrography and geochemistry of magmatic rocks. Conclusions about tectonic layering of the crust and upper mantle in the fault zone, and about a concurrent structural section of large mantle inhomogeneities have been done. The book is the first monographic description of a major fault structure of the ocean floor.

Procedures for radiocarbon dating of ocean sediments on board the ship using the benzene variant of the method are described. The main features of the benzene synthesis scheme, together with its differences from the method usually used onshore laboratories, are discussed briefly. Parameters of radiometric installation, in which activity of synthesized benzenes is determined are cited. The method was used successfully during Cruise 14 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev (45 datings) and Cruise 24 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov (81 datings).

Mineralogy and geochemistry of sulfide-bearing rocks and ores discovered within the Menez Gwen Hydrothermal Field are studied. Samples were taken during Cruise 49 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh of the p.p. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. Mineral composition of rocks and ores were studied by traditional methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (CAMSCAN), and microprobe analysis (EPMA SX-50). Contents of trace elements were determined by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Zn-Cu ore comprises zonal sulfide chimney intergrowths. Numerous Se-rich copper ore fragments occur in volcanomictic layered gritstones and/or barite slabs. Mineral composition, zonality and association of trace elements in ore are typical of black smokers formed at the basalt base near the Azores Triple Junction in the MAR. Obtained results make it possible to reconstruct formation history of the Menez Gwen Hydrothermal Field into the high-temperature (Cu-Se association in ore clasts), medium-temperature (Zn-Cu-As association in ore), and recent (Ba-SiO2 association) stages.

Sedimentary particle fluxes in the Kara Sea and in the Ob and Yenisey estuaries were first estimated and particulate matter composition was studied in September 1993 during Cruise 49 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev. Twenty three bottom stations with sediment traps were deployed, and samples were collected from 13 stations. Particle fluxes ranged from 9.0 to 62.6 mg/m**2/day to the north of the Ob and Yenisey estuaries and were 18.7 to 62.0 mg/m**2/day in the southwestern part of the Kara Sea. Fluxes were up to 1321 mg/m**2/day in the Ob estuary and up to 22156 mg/m**2/day in the Yenisey estuary. Organic matter fluxes were estimated as 0.71-3.29, 4.28-9.04, 26.7, and 368 mg/m**2/day, respectively. Particulate matter is largely represented by pellets of planktic Crustacea and by "sea snow" flakes mainly composed of diatoms. Rapidly settling particles are extensively inhabited by bacterial flora.
