In this study, several new cutting edges for removal of ice from the roadway were tested in a series of closed road tests. These new cutting edges consisted of a variety of serrated shapes. The study also included measurement of ice scraping forces by in-service trucks. These trucks were instrumented in a similar manner as the truck used in the closed-road tests. Results from the closed-road and in-service tests were analyzed by two parameters. The first parameter is the scraping effectiveness, which is defined as the average horizontal force experienced by a cutting edge. The amount of ice scraped from the roadway is directly proportional to the magnitude of the scraping effectiveness. Thus an increase in scraping effectiveness indicates an increase in the amount of ice being scraped from the roadway. The second parameter is force angle, which is defined as tan to the -1 power [vertical force/horizontal force]. A combination of a minimal force angle and a maximized scraping effectiveness represents a case in which the maximal amount of ice is being removed from the pavement without an exceptionally large vertical force. Results indicate that each cutting edge produced a maximal scraping effectiveness with a testing configuration of a 15 deg blade angle and a 23,000 lb. download force. Results also indicate that each cutting edge produced a minimal force angle with a testing configuration of a 15 deg blade angle and a 10,000 lb. download force. Results from the in-service trucks produced similar data and also similar trends within the data when compared to the results of the closed-road tests. This result is most important, as it suggests that the closed-road tests do provide an accurate measure of ice scraping forces for a given blade and configuration of that blade. Thus if the closed-road tests indicate that certain blades perform well, there is now excellent reason to conduct full scale tests of such blades.

Highway Research Project HR-392 was undertaken to evaluate cold in-place asphalt recycled (CIR) projects in the State of Iowa. The research involved assessment of performance levels, investigation of factors that most influence pavement performance and economy, and development of guidelines for CIR project selection. The performance was evaluated in two ways: Pavement Condition Indices (PCI, U.S. Corps of Engineers) were calculated and overall ratings were given on ride and appearance. A regression analysis was extrapolated to predict the future service life of CIR roads. The results were that CIR roads within the State of Iowa, with less than 2000 annual average daily traffic (AADT), have an average predicted service life of fifteen to twenty-six years. Subgrade stability problems can prevent a CIR project from being successfully constructed. A series of Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests were conducted on a CIR project that experienced varying levels of subgrade failure during construction. Based on this case study, and supporting data, it was determined that the DCP test can be used to evaluate subgrades that have insufficient stability for recycling. Overall, CIR roads in Iowa are performing well. It appears that the development of transverse cracking has been retarded and little rutting has occurred. Contracting agencies must pay special attention to the subgrade conditions during project selection. Because of its performance, CIR is a recommended method to be considered for rehabilitating aged low volume (<2000 AADT) asphalt concrete roads in Iowa.

We have tested 21 independent CTL clones for recognition of a single peptide derived from the Plasmodium berghei circumsporozoite protein in the context of 13 mutants of the murine MHC class I molecule H-2Kd. In this series of Kd mutants, amino acid residues located on the upper surface of the alpha-helices were individually substituted by alanine. Remarkably, most clones displayed individual recognition patterns on the Kd mutants. We had previously found that this series of CTL clones was likewise highly diverse in terms of both TCR primary structure and peptide fine specificity. Our data thus reinforce the concept that multiple T cell epitopes are available on the surface of a single peptide-MHC class I complex for recognition by specific TCR.

In the first part of the study, nine estimators of the first-order autoregressive parameter are reviewed and a new estimator is proposed. The relationships and discrepancies between the estimators are discussed in order to achieve a clear differentiation. In the second part of the study, the precision in the estimation of autocorrelation is studied. The performance of the ten lag-one autocorrelation estimators is compared in terms of Mean Square Error (combining bias and variance) using data series generated by Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that there is not a single optimal estimator for all conditions, suggesting that the estimator ought to be chosen according to sample size and to the information available of the possible direction of the serial dependence. Additionally, the probability of labelling an actually existing autocorrelation as statistically significant is explored using Monte Carlo sampling. The power estimates obtained are quite similar among the tests associated with the different estimators. These estimates evidence the small probability of detecting autocorrelation in series with less than 20 measurement times.

The current study proposes a new procedure for separately estimating slope change and level change between two adjacent phases in single-case designs. The procedure eliminates baseline trend from the whole data series prior to assessing treatment effectiveness. The steps necessary to obtain the estimates are presented in detail, explained, and illustrated. A simulation study is carried out to explore the bias and precision of the estimators and compare them to an analytical procedure matching the data simulation model. The experimental conditions include two data generation models, several degrees of serial dependence, trend, level and/or slope change. The results suggest that the level and slope change estimates provided by the procedure are unbiased for all levels of serial dependence tested and trend is effectively controlled for. The efficiency of the slope change estimator is acceptable, whereas the variance of the level change estimator may be problematic for highly negatively autocorrelated data series.

The use of lightweight aggregates in prestressed concrete is becoming more of a reality as our design criteria become more demanding. Bridge girders of greater lengths have been restricted from travel on many of our highways because the weight of the combined girders and transporting vehicle is excessive making hauls of any distance prohibitive. This, along with new safety recommendations, prompted the State of Iowa to investigate the use of lightweight aggregate bridge girders. A series of three projects was started to investigate the possibility of using lightweight aggregate in prestressed concrete. The object of this project is to study the effect which lightweight aggregate concrete has on the camber of bridge girders when used in a field situation.

Investigation of the clay minerals in a gumbotil associated with the Mahaska soil series in Keokuk County, Iowa, indicates that the principal clay mineral is a dioctahedral calcium montmorillonite. Other clay minerals present in this gumbotil are kaolinite and mica, although they are in much smaller percentages. The investigation also pointed out difficulties involved in analyzing this type of soil by standard X-ray procedures and the complications introduced in the analysis of soil samples with high iron content utilizing standard accepted diffraction techniques.

The load ratings for these Standard bridges were calculated in compliance with the 1978 AASHTO Manual for Maintenance Inspection of Bridges, using the appropriate allowable stresses for the materials specified by the Standard plans. Distribution of loads is in compliance with the Manual unless otherwise noted. Except for truss spans, all bridges with roadway widths of 18 ft. or less were rated for one lane of traffic. All 18 ft. roadway truss bridges were rated for both one and two lanes of traffic. All bridges with roadway widths exceeding 18 ft. were rated for two lanes of traffic. If the posting rating for two lane bridges was less than legal, then the bridges were rated for traffic restricted to one lane, or to one lane centered in the roadway, as noted on the summary sheet. The ratings are applicable to bridges built in accordance with the standard plans and which exhibit no significant deterioration or damage to the structural members, and which have no added wearing surface material in excess of that noted on the summary sheets and used in the calculations. The inventory and operating ratings were based upon the standard AASHTO HS20-44 loading. The legal load ratings were based upon the three typical Iowa legal vehicles shown on page 5. The legal load ratings were based upon the maximum allowable Operating Rating stresses specified in the Manual. Refer to notations on the summary sheets for additional qualifications on the load ratings for specific standard bridge series. Load ratings for standard bridges with wood floors must be based upon existing conditions of attachment of the wood flooring to the top flanges of longitudinal steel stringers. The ratings must be reevaluated if the existing lateral support conditions are not in accordance with conditions used for the rating and noted on the summary sheets. Details of most of the standard bridges are included in the three books of "Iowa State Highway Commission, Bridge Standards," issued in June, 1972. Copies of plans for those standard bridges that were rated, and that are not included in the original books of standard plans, are being furnished under separate cover with these rating summaries.
