In arriving at the ideal filter transfer function for an active noise control system in a duct, the effect of the auxiliary sources (generally loudspeakers) on the waves generated by the primary source has invariably been neglected in the existing literature, implying a rigid wall or infinite impedance. The present paper presents a fairly general analysis of a linear one-dimensional noise control system by means of block diagrams and transfer functions. It takes into account the passive as well as active role of a terminal primary source, wall-mounted auxiliary source, open duct radiation impedance, and the effects of mean flow and damping. It is proved that the pressure generated by a source against a load impedance can be looked upon as a sum of two pressure waves, one generated by the source against an anechoic termination and the other by reflecting the rearward wave (incident on the source) off the passive source impedance. Application of this concept is illustrated for both the types of sources. A concise closed-form expression for the ideal filter transfer function is thus derived and discussed. Finally, the dynamics of an adaptive noise control system is discussed briefly, relating its standing-wave variables and transfer functions with those of the progressive-wave model presented here.

The analysis of propagation of a normal shock wave in CO2‐N2‐He or H2 or H2O system seeded with solid particles is presented. The variation of translational and vibrational temperatures of gas phase and the particle temperatures in the relaxation zone behind the shock front are given in graphical form. These results show that the peak value of population inversion and the width of the inversion zone are highest for He catalyst and lowest for H2O catalyst.
A Novel VSI- and CSI-Fed Active-Reactive Induction Motor Drive with Sinusoidal Voltages and Currents
Resumo:
Till date load-commutated inverter (LCI)-fed synchronous motor drive configuration is popular in high power applications (>10 MW). The leading power factor operation of synchronous motor by excitation control offers this simple and rugged drive structure. On the contrary, LCI-fed induction motor drive is absent as it always draws lagging power factor current. Therefore, complicated commutation circuit is required to switch off thyristors for a current source inverter (CSI)-driven induction motor. It poses the major hindrance to scale up the power rating of CSI-fed induction motor drive. Anew power topology for LCI-fed induction motor drive for medium-voltage drive application is proposed. A new induction machine (active-reactive induction machine) with two sets of three-phase winding is introduced as a drive motor. The proposed power configuration ensures sinusoidal voltage and current at the motor terminals. The total drive power is shared among a thyristor-based LCI, an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based two-level voltage source inverter (VSI), and a three-level VSI. The benefits of SCRs and IGBTs are explored in the proposed drive. Experimental results from a prototype drive verify the basic concepts of the drive.

This paper advocates the use of active current and potential transducers for proper utilisation of fast protective relays. The active current transducer faithfully transforms the primary current containing a slowly decaying d.c. component, thereby providing a good transient response. The active potential transducer helps in fast extinction of ferroresonance oscillations. Results oflaboratory investigations are also presented.

A new structured discretization of 2D space, named X-discretization, is proposed to solve bivariate population balance equations using the framework of minimal internal consistency of discretization of Chakraborty and Kumar [2007, A new framework for solution of multidimensional population balance equations. Chem. Eng. Sci. 62, 4112-4125] for breakup and aggregation of particles. The 2D space of particle constituents (internal attributes) is discretized into bins by using arbitrarily spaced constant composition radial lines and constant mass lines of slope -1. The quadrilaterals are triangulated by using straight lines pointing towards the mean composition line. The monotonicity of the new discretization makes is quite easy to implement, like a rectangular grid but with significantly reduced numerical dispersion. We use the new discretization of space to automate the expansion and contraction of the computational domain for the aggregation process, corresponding to the formation of larger particles and the disappearance of smaller particles by adding and removing the constant mass lines at the boundaries. The results show that the predictions of particle size distribution on fixed X-grid are in better agreement with the analytical solution than those obtained with the earlier techniques. The simulations carried out with expansion and/or contraction of the computational domain as population evolves show that the proposed strategy of evolving the computational domain with the aggregation process brings down the computational effort quite substantially; larger the extent of evolution, greater is the reduction in computational effort. A finite element method for solving multidimensional population balance systems is proposed where the balance of fluid velocity, temperature and solute partial density is considered as a two-dimensional system and the balance of particle size distribution as a three-dimensional one. The method is based on a dimensional splitting into physical space and internal property variables. In addition, the operator splitting allows to decouple the equations for temperature, solute partial density and particle size distribution. Further, a nodal point based parallel finite element algorithm for multi-dimensional population balance systems is presented. The method is applied to study a crystallization process assuming, for simplicity, a size independent growth rate and neglecting agglomeration and breakage of particles. Simulations for different wall temperatures are performed to show the effect of cooling on the crystal growth. Although the method is described in detail only for the case of d=2 space and s=1 internal property variables it has the potential to be extendable to d+s variables, d=2, 3 and s >= 1. Third World hinterlands provide most of the settings in which the quality of human life has improved the least over the decade since Our Common Future was published. This low quality of life promotes a desire for large number of offspring, fuelling population growth and an exodus to the urban centres of the Third World, Enhancing the quality of life of these people in ways compatible with the health of their environments is therefore the most significant of the challenges from the perspective of sustainable development. Human quality of life may be viewed in terms of access to goods, services and a satisfying social role. The ongoing processes of globalization are enhancing flows of goods worldwide, but these hardly reach the poor of Third World countrysides. But processes of globalization have also vastly improved everybody's access to Information, and there are excellent opportunities of putting this to good use to enhance the quality of life of the people of Third World countrysides through better access to education and health. More importantly, better access to information could promote a more satisfying social role through strengthening grass-roots involvement in development planning and management of natural resources. I illustrate these possibilities with the help of a series of concrete experiences form the south Indian state of Kerala. Such an effort does not call for large-scare material inputs, rather it calls for a culture of inform-and-share in place place of the prevalent culture of control-and-command. It calls for openness and transparency in transactions involving government agencies, NGOs, and national and transnational business enterprises. It calls for acceptance of accountability by such agencies.
