We consider two different kinds of fluctuations in an ion trap potential: external fluctuating electrical fields, which cause statistical movement (wobbling) of the ion relative to the center of the trap, and fluctuations of the spring constant, which an due to fluctuations of the ac component of the potential applied in the Paul trap for ions. We write down master equations for both cases and, averaging out the noise, obtain expressions for the heating of the ion. We compare our results to previous results for far-off resonance optical traps and heating in ion traps. The effect of fluctuating external electrical fields for a quantum gate operation (controlled-NOT) is determined and the fidelity for that operation derived. [S1050-2947(99)06005-9].

The bis(mu-hydroxo) complex [Cu-2(Me-2[9]aneN(2)S)(2)(OH)(2)](PF6)(2) (Me-2[9]aneN(2)S = N,N'-dimethyl-1-thia-4,7-diazacyclononane) results after reaction of [Cu(Me-2[9]aneN(2)S)(MeCN)] (PF6) with dioxygen at -78 degrees C in acetonitrile. The complex has been characterized by X-ray crystallography: orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a 18.710(3), b 16.758(2), c 9.593(2) Angstrom, and Z = 4. The structure refined to a final R value of 0.051. The complex contains two copper(II) ions bridged by two hydroxo groups with Cu ... Cu 2.866(1) Angstrom. The solid-state magnetic susceptibility study reveals ferromagnetic coupling, the fitting parameters being J = +46+/-5 cm(-1), g = 2.01+/-0.01 and theta = -0.58+/-0.03 K. The frozen-solution e.p.r. spectrum in dimethyl sulfoxide is characteristic of a monomeric copper(II) ion (g(parallel to) 2.300, g(perpendicular to) 2.063; A(parallel to) 156.2 x 10(-4) cm(-1), A(perpendicular to) 9.0 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) with an N2O2 donor set. Thioether coordination to the copper(II) in solution is supported by the presence of an intense absorption assigned to a sigma(S)-->Cu-II LMCT transition at c. 34000 cm(-1). The single-crystal spectrum of [Cu-2(Me-2[9]aneN(2)S)(2)(OH)(2)] (PF6)(2) (273 K) reveals d-->d transitions at 14500 and 18300 cm(-1) and a weak pi(S)-->Cu-II charge-transfer band at approximately 25000 cm(-1).

The 12-membered macrocyclic ligand 1-thia-4,7, 10-triazacyclododecane ([12]aneN(3)S) has been synthesised, although upon crystallization from acetonitrile a product in which carbon dioxide had added to one secondary amine in the macrocyclic ring (H[12]aneN(3)SCO(2). H2O) was isolated and subsequently characterised by X-ray crystallography. The protonation constants for [12]aneN(3)S and stability constants with Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) have been determined either potentiometrically or spectrophotometrically in aqueous solution, and compared with those measured or reported for the ligands 1-oxa-4,7,10-triazacyclododecane ([12]aneN(3)O) and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane ([12]aneN(4)). The magnitudes of the stability constants are consistent with trends observed previously for macrocyclic ligands as secondary amine donors are replaced with oxygen and thioether donors although the stability constant for the [Hg([12]aneN(4))](2+) complex has been estimated from an NMR experiment to be at least three orders of magnitude larger than reported previously. Zinc(II), mercury(II), lead(II), copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes of [12]aneN(3)S have been isolated and characterised by X-ray crystallography. In the case of copper(II), two complexes [Cu([12]aneN(3)S)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) and [Cu-2([12]aneN(3)S)(2)(OH)(2)](ClO4)(2) were isolated, depending on the conditions employed. Molecular mechanics calculations have been employed to investigate the relative metal ion size preferences of the [3333], asym-[2424] and sym-[2424] conformation isomers. The calculations predict that the asym-[2424] conformer is most stable for M-N bond lengths in the range 2.00-2.25 Angstrom whilst for the larger metal ions the [3333] conformer is dominant. The disorder seen in the structure of the [Zn([12]aneN(3)S)(NO3)](+) complex is also explained by the calculations. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a novel method of performing quantum logic gates in trapped ion quantum computers which does not require the ions to be cooled down to the ground state of their vibrational modes, thereby avoiding one of the principal experimental difficulties encountered in realizing this technology. Our scheme employs adiabatic passages and a phase shift conditional on the phonon number state.

Direct oxidation of sulfite to sulfate occurs in various photo- and chemotrophic sulfur oxidizing microorganisms as the final step in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds and is catalyzed by sulfite:cytochrome c oxidoreductase (EC 1.8.2.1), Here we show that the enzyme from Thiobacillus novellus is a periplasmically located alpha beta heterodimer, consisting of a 40.6-kDa subunit containing a molybdenum cofactor and an 8.8-kDa monoheme cytochrome c(552) smbunit (midpoint redox potential, Em(8.0) = +280 mV), The organic component of the molybdenum cofactor was identified as molybdopterin contained in a 1:1 ratio to the Mo content of the enzyme. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed the presence of a sulfite-inducible Mo(V) signal characteristic of sulfite:acceptor oxidoreductases. However, pH-dependent changes in the electron paramagnetic resonance signal were not detected. Kinetic studies showed that the enzyme exhibits a ping-pong mechanism involving two reactive sites. K-m values for sulfite and cytochrome c(550) were determined to be 27 and 4 mu M, respectively; the enzyme was found to be reversibly inhibited by sulfate and various buffer ions. The sorAB genes, which encode the enzyme, appear to form an operon, which is preceded by a putative extracytoplasmic function-type promoter and contains a hairpin loop termination structure downstream of sorB. While SorA exhibits significant similarities to known sequences of eukaryotic and bacterial sulfite:acceptor oxidoreductases, SorB does not appear to be closely related to any known c-type cytochromes.

The potentially sexidentate polyamine macrocycle 15-methyl-1,4,7,10,13-pentaazacyclohexadecan-15-amine (1) was prepared via a copper(II)-templated route from 3,6,9-triazaundecan-1,ll-diamine, formaldehyde and nitroethane which first formed the copper(II) complex of the macrocycle 15-methyl-15-nitro-1,4,7,10,13-pentaazacyclohexadecane (2), reduced subsequently with zinc and aqueous acid to yield 1. The hexaamine 1, with five secondary amine groups in the macrocyclic ring and one pendant primary amine group, forms inert sexidentate octahedral complexes with cobalt(III), chromium(III) and iron(III). An X-ray structure of [Co(1)](ClO4)(3) defines the distorted octahedron of the complex cation and shows it is a symmetrical isomer with all nitrogens bound and the central aza group trans to the pendant primary amine group. The [M(1)](3+) ions are all stable indefinitely in aqueous solution and exhibit spectra consistent with MN6 d(3) (Cr), low-spin d(5) (Fe) and low-spin d(6) (Co) electronic ground states. For each complex, a reversible M(III/II) redox couple is observed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The tetraalcohol 2,3,5,6-endo,endo,endo,endo-tetrakis(hydroxymethyl]bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (tetol, 1) has been prepared and crystallises readily as the lithium(I) complex [Li(1)(2)]Cl, forming an oligomeric multi-chain structure in which pairs of alcohols from two crystallographically independent tetol molecules bind lithium ions tetrahedrally. However, formation of monomeric structures in solution is inferred from electrospray mass spectroscopy, which has also shown evidence of exchange of lithium ion in the complexed species by added alkaline earth ions. The substituted cysteine accessibility method was used to probe the surface exposure of a pore-lining threonine residue (T6') common to both the glycine receptor (GlyR) and gamma-aminobutyric acid, type A receptor (GABAAR) chloride channels. This residue lies close to the channel activation gate, the ionic selectivity filter, and the main pore blocker binding site. Despite their high amino acid sequence homologies and common role in conducting chloride ions, recent studies have suggested that the GlyRs and GABA(A)Rs have divergent open state pore structures at the 6' position. When both the human alpha1(T6'C) homomeric GlyR and the rat alpha1(T6'C)beta1(T6'C) heteromeric GABA(A)R were expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 cells, their 6' residue surface accessibilities differed significantly in the closed state. However, when a soluble cysteine-modifying compound was applied in the presence of saturating agonist concentrations, both receptors were locked into the open state. This action was not induced by oxidizing agents in either receptor. These results provide evidence for a conserved pore opening mechanism in anion-selective members of the ligand-gated ion channel family. The results also indicate that the GABA(A)R pore structure at the 6' level may vary between different expression systems.

An extracellular glucoamylase produced by Paecilomyces variotii was purified using DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography and Sephadex G-100 gel filtration. The purified protein migrated as a single band in 7% PAGE and 8% SDS-PAGE. The estimated molecular mass was 86.5 kDa (SDS-PAGE). Optima of temperature and pH were 55 degrees C and 5.0, respectively. In the absence of substrate the purified glucoamylase was stable for 1 h at 50 and 55 degrees C, with a t(50) of 45 min at 60 degrees C. The substrate contributed to protect the enzyme against thermal denaturation. The enzyme was mainly activated by manganese metal ions. The glucoamylase produced by P. variotii preferentially hydrolyzed amylopectin, glycogen and starch, and to a lesser extent malto-oligossacarides and amylose. Sucrose, p-nitrophenyl alpha-D-maltoside, methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside, pullulan, alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin, and trehalose were not hydrolyzed. After 24 h, the products of starch hydrolysis, analyzed by thin layer chromatography, showed only glucose. The circular dichroism spectrum showed a protein rich in alpha-helix. The sequence of amino acids of the purified enzyme VVTDSFR appears similar to glucoamylases purified from Talaromyces emersonii and with the precursor of the glucoamylase from Aspergillus oryzae. These results suggested the character of the enzyme studied as a glucoamylase (1,4-alpha-D-glucan glucohydrolase).

This work reports on the synthesis and characterization of a new complex of Eu(3+) with the 3-hydroxypicolinamide ligand (Hhpa). Here we present an approach for obtaining bis[2-carbamoyl(kappa O)pyridin-3-olato(kappa O`)] lanthanide complexes, which were characterized through elemental analysis, thermal analysis, infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopies (emission, excitation, luminescence lifetimes, quantum efficiencies, Judd-Ofelt parameters and quantum yields). Although hpa can act as a bidentate ligand in different conformations, the results attest for the occurrence of a unique coordination site of low symmetry for the Eu(3+) ions, in which two anionic hpa ligands coordinate the cations through an O/O chelating system. The phosphorescence of the synthesized gadolinium complex provides the energy of the triplet state, which is determined to be at 20,830 cm(-1) over the ground state. This makes the Hhpa ligand very adequate for sensitizing the Eu(3+) luminescence, which leads to a very efficient antenna effect and opens a wide range of applications for the complex in light emitting organic-inorganic devices.

This paper has investigated the electrochemical oxidation of glyphosate herbicide (GH) on RuO(2) and IrO(2) dimensionally stable anode (DSA (R)) electrodes. Electrolysis was achieved under galvanostatic control as a function of pH, GH concentration, supporting electrolyte, and current density. The influence of the oxide composition on GH degradation seems to be significant in the absence of chloride; Ti/Ir(0.30)Sn(0.70)O(2) is the best electrode material to oxidize GH. GH oxidation is favored at low pH values. The use of chloride medium increases the oxidizing power and the influence of the oxide composition is meaningless. At 30 mA cm(-2) and 4 h of electrolysis, complete GH removal from the electrolyzed solution has been obtained. In chloride medium, application of 50 mA cm(-2) leads to virtually total mineralization ( release of phosphate ions = 91%) for all the evaluated oxide materials. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Radical anions are present in several chemical processes, and understanding the reactivity of these species may be described by their thermodynamic properties. Over the last years, the formation of radical ions in the gas phase has been an important issue concerning electrospray ionization mass spectrometry studies. In this work, we report on the generation of radical anions of quinonoid compounds (Q) by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The balance between radical anion formation and the deprotonated molecule is also analyzed by influence of the experimental parameters (gas-phase acidity, electron affinity, and reduction potential) and solvent system employed. The gas-phase parameters for formation of radical species and deprotonated species were achieved on the basis of computational thermochemistry. The solution effects on the formation of radical anion (Q(center dot-)) and dianion (Q(2-)) were evaluated on the basis of cyclic voltammetry analysis and the reduction potentials compared with calculated electron affinities. The occurrence of unexpected ions [Q + 15](-) was described as being a reaction between the solvent system and the radical anion, Q(center dot-).The gas-phase chemistry of the electrosprayed radical anions was obtained by collisional-induced dissociation and compared to the relative energy calculations. These results are important for understanding the formation and reactivity of radical anions and to establish their correlation with the reducing properties by electrospray ionization analyses.

The novel asymmetric metallo-organic triads cis- and trans-[B(4-py)BPFPH(2){Ru(3)O(Ac)(6)(py)(2)}(Ru(bpy)(2)Cl}](PF(6))(2) (5a,b) for which cis- and trans-B(4-py)BPFPH(2)=5,10-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-15,20-bis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin and 5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-10,20-bis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, respectively; Ac = acetate; py = pyridine and bpy = 2,2`-bipyridine, as well as their corresponding monosubstituted dyads cis- and trans-[B(4-py)BPFPH(2){Ru(3)O(Ac)(6)(py)(2)}]PF(6) (4a,b) have been structurally characterized via electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS). The ESI-MS of dyads 4a,b display two characteristic Ru-multicomponent clusters of isotopologue ions corresponding to singly charged ions 4a,b(+) of m/z 1629 and doubly charged ions [4a,b+H](2+) of m/z 815 and the triads 5a,b are detected by ESI-MS as the intact doubly charged cluster of isotopologue ions of m/z 1039 [5a,b](2+). The ESI-MS/MS of 4a,b(+), [4a,b+H](2+) and [5a,b](2+) reveal characteristic dissociation pathways, which confirm the structural assignments providing additional information on the intrinsic binding strengths of the gaseous ions. Although the gas-phase behavior of each pair of isomers was rather similar, the less symmetric dyads 4a,b are distinguished via the (1)H NMR spectral profile of the pyrrolic signals. Exploratory photophysical assays have shown that both modifying motifs alter the porphyrinic core emission profile, opening the possibility to use these asymmetric systems as photophysical devices. Phosphoniobate glasses with composition (mol%) (100-x) NaPO(3)-xNb(2)O(5) ( x varying from 11 to 33) were prepared and characterized by means of thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman scattering and (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance. The addition of Nb(2)O(5) to the polyphosphate base glass leads to depolymerization of the metaphosphate structure. Different colors were observed and assigned as indicating the presence of Nb(4+) ions, as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The color was observed to depend on the glass composition and melting temperature as well. Er(3+) containing samples were also prepared. Strong emission in the 1550 nm region was observed. The Er(3+4)I(15/2) emission quantum efficiency was observed to be 90% and the quenching concentration was observed to be 1.1 mol%( 1.45 x 10(20) ions cm(-3)). Planar waveguides were prepared by Na(+)-K(+)-Ag(+) ion exchange with Er(3+) containing samples. Optical parameters of the waveguides were measured at 632.8, 543.5 and 1550 nm by the prism coupling technique as a function of the ion exchange time and Ag(+) concentration. The optimized planar waveguides show a diffusion depth of 5.9 mu m and one propagating mode at 1550 nm.
