Following the method of Ioffe and Smilga, the propagation of the baryon current in an external constant axial-vector field is considered. The close similarity of the operator-product expansion with and without an external field is shown to arise from the chiral invariance of gauge interactions in perturbation theory. Several sum rules corresponding to various invariants both for the nucleon and the hyperons are derived. The analysis of the sum rules is carried out by two independent methods, one called the ratio method and the other called the continuum method, paying special attention to the nondiagonal transitions induced by the external field between the ground state and excited states. Up to operators of dimension six, two new external-field-induced vacuum expectation values enter the calculations. Previous work determining these expectation values from PCAC (partial conservation of axial-vector current) are utilized. Our determination from the sum rules of the nucleon axial-vector renormalization constant GA, as well as the Cabibbo coupling constants in the SU3-symmetric limit (ms=0), is in reasonable accord with the experimental values. Uncertainties in the analysis are pointed out. The case of broken flavor SU3 symmetry is also considered. While in the ratio method, the results are stable for variation of the fiducial interval of the Borel mass parameter over which the left-hand side and the right-hand side of the sum rules are matched, in the continuum method the results are less stable. Another set of sum rules determines the value of the linear combination 7F-5D to be ≊0, or D/(F+D)≊(7/12). .AE

Based on XPS and UVPS studies, it is shown that oxygen is preferentially adsorbed molecularly in the singlet state on Cu and Ag surfaces containing presorbed chlorine. Adsorption of chlorine on Cu and Ag surfaces containing presorbed atomic oxygen causes a disappearance of the oxygen. Extended Hückel calculations predict the observed behaviour.

The detailed electronic structure of the n-v addition compound H2O·BF3 has been investigated for the first time by a combined use of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) augmented by MO calculations. The calculated molecular orbital energies of H2O·BF3 agree well with the UPS results and have been used to assign the electronic transitions obtained from EELS and to construct an orbital correlation diagram. Earlier, we showed that, for the D form (n = 8 and h = 3.03 A, where n is number of nucleotide units per turn and h is height per nucleotide unit) of poly[d(A-T)], both right- and left-handed double helical models are stereochemically satisfactory and give good agreement with the observed fiber diffraction data. It was also noted that the conformations of the right- and left-handed D-DNA models are very similar to those of the right- and left-handed B-DNA models. This observation was consistent with the D leads to B transition in the solid phase. As a continuation of our earlier studies, we have carried out similar experiments with poly[d(I-C)]. We could obtain a crystalline D-form pattern (n = 8, h = 3.13 A) of the fiber at 75% relative humidity (r.h.); the hydrated (r.h. approximately equal to 95%) form of the same fiber gave the classical B-form pattern (n = 10, h = 3.40 A). In the present report, we show that both right- and left-handed double-helical models are consistent with the fiber diffraction data of poly[d(I-C)] in the D-form. Theoretical energy calculations also suggest that the right- and left-handed B- and D-DNA models are almost equally stable. Hence, we conclude that the right- and left-handed double-helical models of poly[d(I-C)] in a given form (B or D) are equally likely and that the fiber diffraction data do not permit discrimination.

The conformational analysis of the synthetic peptide Boc-Cys-Pro-Val-Cys-NHMe has been carried out, as a model for small disulfide loops, in biologically active polypeptides. 'H NMR studies (270 MHz) establish that the Val(3) and Cys(4) NH groups are solvent shielded, while 13C studies establish an all-trans peptide backbone. Circular dichroism and Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for a right-handed twist of the disulfide bond. Analysis of the vicinal (JaB)c oupling constants for the two Cys residues establishes that XI - *60° for Cys(4), while some flexibility is suggested at Cys( 1). Conformational energy calculations, imposing intramolecular hydrogen bonding constraints, favor a P-turn (type I) structure with Pro(2)-Va1(3) as the corner residues. Theoretical and spectroscopic results are consistent with the presence of a transannular 4 - 1 hydrogen bond between Cys( 1) CO and Cys(4) NH groups, with the Val NH being sterically shielded from the solvent environment.

We have carried out an analysis of crystal structure data on prolyl and hydroxyprolyl moieties in small molecules. The flexibility of the pyrrolidine ring due to the pyramidal character of nitrogen has been defined in terms of two projection angles δ1 and δ2. The distribution of these parameters in the crystal structures is found to be consistent with results of the energy calculations carried out on prolyl moieties in our laboratory.

Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we determine and analyze the Born effective charges Z(*) that describe the coupling between electric field and atomic displacements for ferromagnetic double-perovskite compound, La2NiMnO6. We find that th Born effective charge matrix of Ni in La2NiMnO6, has an anomalously large antisymmetric component, whose magnitude reduces substantially upon change in the magnetic ordering between Ni and Mn, showing it to be a magnetism-dependent electrostructural coupling. We use a local picture of the electronic structure obtained with Wannier functions, along with its band-by-band decomposition to determine its electronic origin.

The Watson-Crick type of base pairing is considered to be mandatory for the formation of duplex DNA. However, conformational calculations carried out in our laboratory, have shown that some combinations of backbone torsion angles and sugar pucker lead to duplexes with Hoogsteen type of base pairing also. Here we present the results of energy calculations performed on A-T containing doublet sequences in the D-form with both Hoogsteen and Watson-Crick type of base pairing and the 3 viable models for the A-T containing polynucleotide duplex poly[d(A-T)].

Consumer risk assessment is a crucial step in the regulatory approval of pesticide use on food crops. Recently, an additional hurdle has been added to the formal consumer risk assessment process with the introduction of short-term intake or exposure assessment and a comparable short-term toxicity reference, the acute reference dose. Exposure to residues during one meal or over one day is important for short-term or acute intake. Exposure in the short term can be substantially higher than average because the consumption of a food on a single occasion can be very large compared with typical long-term or mean consumption and the food may have a much larger residue than average. Furthermore, the residue level in a single unit of a fruit or vegetable may be higher by a factor (defined as the variability factor, which we have shown to be typically ×3 for the 97.5th percentile unit) than the average residue in the lot. Available marketplace data and supervised residue trial data are examined in an investigation of the variability of residues in units of fruit and vegetables. A method is described for estimating the 97.5th percentile value from sets of unit residue data. Variability appears to be generally independent of the pesticide, the crop, crop unit size and the residue level. The deposition of pesticide on the individual unit during application is probably the most significant factor. The diets used in the calculations ideally come from individual and household surveys with enough consumers of each specific food to determine large portion sizes. The diets should distinguish the different forms of a food consumed, eg canned, frozen or fresh, because the residue levels associated with the different forms may be quite different. Dietary intakes may be calculated by a deterministic method or a probabilistic method. In the deterministic method the intake is estimated with the assumptions of large portion consumption of a ‘high residue’ food (high residue in the sense that the pesticide was used at the highest recommended label rate, the crop was harvested at the smallest interval after treatment and the residue in the edible portion was the highest found in any of the supervised trials in line with these use conditions). The deterministic calculation also includes a variability factor for those foods consumed as units (eg apples, carrots) to allow for the elevated residue in some single units which may not be seen in composited samples. In the probabilistic method the distribution of dietary consumption and the distribution of possible residues are combined in repeated probabilistic calculations to yield a distribution of possible residue intakes. Additional information such as percentage commodity treated and combination of residues from multiple commodities may be incorporated into probabilistic calculations. The IUPAC Advisory Committee on Crop Protection Chemistry has made 11 recommendations relating to acute dietary exposure.

Based on a simple picture of speckle phenomena in optical interferometry it is shown that the recent signal-to-noise ratio estimate for the so called bispectrum, due to Wirnitzer (1985), does not possess the right limit when photon statistics is unimportant. In this wave-limit, which is true for bright sources, his calculations over-estimate the signal-to-noise ratio for the bispectrum by a factor of the order of the square root of the number of speckles.

1. The electric field strength between coplanar electrodes is calculated employing "conformal transformations." The electron multiplication factor is then computed in the nonuniform field region. These calculations have been made for different gap lengths, voltages, and also for different gases and gas pressures. The configuration results in a curved discharge path. It is found that the electron multiplication is maximum along a particular flux line and the prebreakdown discharge is expected to follow this flux line. Experimental tubes incorporating several coplanar gaps have been fabricated. Breakdown voltages have been measured for various discharge gaps and also for various gases such as xenon, helium, neon, argon, and neon-argon mixture (99.5:0.5) at different filling pressures. The variation of breakdown voltage with pressure and gap length is discussed. The observed discharge paths are curved and this is in agreement with theoretical results. A few experimental single-digit coplanar gas-discharge displays (CGDD's) with digit height of 5 cm have been fabricated and dependence of their characteristics on various parameters, including spacing between top glass plate and bottom substrate, have been studied.

Final R = 5.8% for 614 significant reflections. The molecule, which does not possess a centre of symmetry, occupies a crystallographic centre of symmetry because of the statistical enantiomeric and rotational disorder. Latticeenergy calculations, based on van der Waals attractive and repulsive potentials, clearly show minima at the observed disordered positions.

The Ph.D. thesis discusses the monetary development in Roman Syria and Judaea in the Late Republican and the Early Imperial Period, from a numismatic, archaeological and historical point of view. In effect, the work focuses on the 1st century B.C. to the 1st century A.D., that is, the assumed time of introduction of Roman denarii to the region. The work benefits from the silver coin hoards of Khirbet Qumran recently published by the author. Though discovered as early as 1955 at Qumran, where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls had been found prior to that in 1947, most hoards remained unpublished until 2007. A second important source utilized is the so-called Tax Law from Palmyra in Syria. Its significance lies in the fact that Palmyra used to be one of the most important cities on the Silk Road, along which luxury goods were transported into the Roman Empire and Rome itself. During the research conducted, studies of the provincial coinage of Judaea (A.D. 6-66) shed new light on the authority of the Roman governors in economic and monetary matters in eastern Mediterranean regions. Furthermore, a new suggestion as to the length of the mandate period of Pontius Pilate is made. The extent of Emperor Augustus monetary reforms as well as the military history of Judaea are discussed in the light of new analytical studies, which show that the production of Roman base metal coins appears to have been a highly controlled process, contrary to popular opinion. Statistical calculations related to the coin alloy revealed striking similarities with Roman and other local metalwork found in Israel; a fact previously unknown. Results indicate that both Roman and local metalwork consisted of outstandingly systematized practises and may have exploited the same metal sources. Several boson subsystems may be involved in electrosorption phenomena. To accommodate this possibility, the one-boson formalism described in Parts I–III is extended to this case. The hierarchy in the superoperator scheme, the evaluation of operator averages for closure and several special cases are indicated. As an illustration, some calculations are presented to indicate the trends of many-body corrections in chemisorption.

The scanning thermogram of a block sample of a double-base propellant shows a shoulder around 200°C which is not observed in a powder sample of the sample propellant. The heat of decomposition was also found to be different In the two cases. Product analysis and activation energy calculations show that nitroglycerine un dergoes decomposition in the block sample, whereas it vaporizes in the powder sample.
