S'ha estudiat l'estructura i dinàmica del sistema bentònic de llacunes costaneres de la maresma dels aiguamolls de l'Empordà (NE de la península Ibèrica) i els factors que les determinen. Amb aquesta finalitat es van prendre mostres d'organismes del bentos (mensualment), nutrients i pigments de l'aigua (setmanalment) i el sediment (mensualment), així com paràmetres físics de l'aigua (setmanalment), durant dos cicles d'inundació (1997-1998 i 1998-1999). En aquesta maresma els factors determinants per als organismes bentònics i el contingut en nutrients del sediment són principalment físics: el grau de permanència de l'aigua, el confinament i la granulometria. De manera que els factors tròfics tenen menys pes que els físics tal com es posa de manifest amb les associacions de nematodes. El règim hídric de les llacunes integra des del grau de permanència de l'aigua fins a la salinitat i el confinament, per la qual cosa a partir de la caracterització dels diferents tipus de règim hídric es poden discriminar les tres tipologies d'ambients amb comunitats bentòniques diferenciades en l'estructura, la composició i la dinàmica temporal. Així, les tres comunitats diferenciades són: (1) la d'aigües permanents caracteritzada per una riquesa i diversitat elevades i constants en el temps, i per un nombre més elevat de tàxons sense adaptacions per passar situacions adverses; (2) la d'aigües semipermanents i temporànies d'inundació pulsativa, caracteritzada per una menor riquesa i diversitat, i per la dominància d'organismes amb estructures de resistència per passar la fase seca i aguantar condicions desfavorables, i (3) la d'aigües temporànies d'inundació continuada, caracteritzada per una major variabilitat de la riquesa i diversitat al llarg del cicle i per una singularitat taxonòmica més elevada, ja que s'observen cladòcers i una major representació taxonòmica dels insectes. Durant la realització d'aquest estudi els dos cicles d'inundació van suposar entrades d'aigua en el sistema diferents, per això es va diferenciar un cicle humit (1997-1998) i un de sec (1998-1999). En relació amb la major importància de les entrades d'aigua en el sistema, es va observar un contingut en nutrients de l'aigua significativament superior durant el cicle humit. Pel que fa al sediment, la seva major inèrcia explicaria la manca de diferències significatives en el contingut en nutrients del sediment del cicle humit i del sec. Ara bé, sí que s'observa diferència en la composició d'organismes. Així, la variabilitat interanual en l'estructura de la comunitat bentònica de la maresma es pot atribuir a una situació d'estrès provocada pel cicle sec. Aquesta situació va comportar un augment de la diversitat per disminució de la dominància a totes les llacunes estudiades, determinada, en gran manera, per la disminució de l'abundància original de poblacions dominants i característiques d'ambients permanents, Corophium orientale, o temporànies, Gammarus aequicauda. No existeix un patró estacional en les comunitats estudiades, sinó que els principals canvis en el plàncton i el bentos són deguts a pertorbacions hídriques. Aquestes pertorbacions provoquen que s'estableixi una situació en què dominen uns tàxons característics en el plàncton (Synchaeta i Eutintinnus) i, en canvi, que en el bentos es perdi l'estructura pròpia de les comunitats característiques dels diferents ambients (comunitats dominades per Corophium orinetale en aigües permanents i per Chironomus salinarius en temporànies). La severitat és diferent en funció del grau de permanència de l'aigua, i és més alta en ambients permanents i més baixa en els temporanis. La major severitat en ambients permanents ve determinada per la menor adaptació del bentos d'aigües permanents a les fluctuacions ambientals i a l'efecte de la predació sobre el plàncton. A més, tant en el bentos com en el plàncton es donen fenòmens d'histèresi, segons els quals l'efecte de la pertorbació no solament depèn de la causa pertorbadora sinó també de l'estat en què es troba la comunitat en el moment de la pertorbació.

Pollution by toxic compounds is one of the most relevant environmental damages to ecosystems produced by human activity and, therefore, it must be considered in environmental protection and restoration of contaminated sites. According to this purposes, the main goal of this doctoral thesis has been to analyse the impact of several chlorophenols and heavy metals on the microbial communities of two typical Mediterranean soils. The ecological risk concentrations of each pollutant, which have been determined according to respirometric activity and changes in the microbial community composition, and the factors that influence on their effective toxic concentrations (bioavailable pollutants) have been analysed in order to predict their potential impact on different soil ecosystems and provide scientific data for the regulation of the soil protection policies. Moreover, resistant microorganisms with pollutant removal capacities have been isolated from artificially contaminated soil microcosms and tested in axenic cultures, to infer their potential usefulness for bioremediation.

We have examined the contributions sucrose and sawdust make to the net immobilization of inorganic soil N and assimilation of both C and N into microbial biomass when they are used as part of a restoration plan to promote the establishment of indigenous vegetation on abandoned agricultural fields on the Central Hungarian Plain. Both amendments led to net N immobilization. Sucrose addition also led to mobilization of N from the soil organic N pool and its immobilization into microbial biomass, whereas sawdust addition apparently immobilized soil N into a non-biomass compartment or a biomass component that was not detected by the conventional biomass N assay (CHCl3 fumigation and extraction). This suggests that the N was either cycled through the biomass, but not immobilized within it, or that it was immobilized in a protected biomass fraction different to the fraction into which N was immobilized in response to sucrose addition.

When considering contaminated site ecology and ecological risk assessment a key question is whether organisms that appear unaffected by accumulation of contaminants are tolerant or resistant to those contaminants. A population of Dendrodrilus rubidus Savigny earthworms from the Coniston Copper Mines, an area of former Cu mining, exhibit increased tolerance and accumulation of Cu relative to a nearby non-Cu exposed population. Distribution of total Cu between different body parts (posterior, anterior, body wall) of the two populations was determined after a 14 day exposure to 250 mg Cu kg(-1) in Cu-amended soil. Cu concentrations were greater in Coniston earthworms but relative proportions of Cu in different body parts were the same between populations. Cu speciation was determined using extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Cu was coordinated to 0 atoms in the exposure soil but to S atoms in the earthworms. There was no difference in this speciation between the different earthworm populations. In another experiment earthworms were exposed to a range of Cu concentrations (200-700 mg Cu kg(-1)). Subcellular partitioning of accumulated Cu was determined. Coniston earthworms accumulated more Cu but relative proportions of Cu in the different fractions (cytosol > granular > tissue fragments, cell membranes, and intact cells) were the same between populations. Results suggest that Coniston D. rubidus are able to survive in the Cu-rich Coniston Copper Mines soil through enlargement of the same Cu storage reservoirs that exist in a nearby non-Cu exposed population.

An X-ray micro-tomography system has been designed that is dedicated to the low-dose imaging of radiation sensitive living organisms and has been used to image the early development of the first few days of plant development immediately after germination. The system is based on third-generation X-ray micro-tomography system and consists of an X-ray tube, two-dimensional X-ray detector and a mechanical sample manipulation stage. The X-ray source is a 50 kVp X-ray tube with a silver target with a filter to centre the X-ray spectrum on 22 keV.A 100 mm diameter X-ray image intensifier (XRII) is used to collect the two-dimensional projection images. The rotation tomography table incorporates a linear translation mechanism to eliminate ring artefact that is commonly associated with third-generation tomography systems' Developing maize seeds (Triticum aestivum) have been imaged using the system with a cubic voxel linear dimension of 100 mum, over a diameter of 25 mm and the root lengths and volumes measured. The X-ray dose to the plants was also assessed and found to have no effect on the plant root development. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chemical pollution of the environment has become a major source of concern. In particular, many studies have investigated the impact of pollution on biota in the environment. Studies on metalliferous contaminated mine spoil wastes have shown that some soil organisms have the capability to become resistant to metal/metalloid toxicity. Earthworms are known to inhabit arsenic-rich metalliferous soils and, due to their intimate contact with the soil, in both the solid and aqueous phases, are likely to accumulate contaminants present in mine spoil. Earthworms that inhabit metalliferous contaminated soils must have developed mechanisms of resistance to the toxins found in these soils. The mechanisms of resistance are not fully understood; they may involve physiological adaptation (acclimation) or be genetic. This review discusses the relationships between earthworms and arsenic-rich mine spoil wastes, looking critically at resistance and possible mechanisms of resistance, in relation to soil edaphic factors and possible trophic transfer routes. Many ecosystem services are delivered by organisms that depend on habitats that are segregated spatially or temporally from the location where services are provided. Management of mobile organisms contributing to ecosystem services requires consideration not only of the local scale where services are delivered, but also the distribution of resources at the landscape scale, and the foraging ranges and dispersal movements of the mobile agents. We develop a conceptual model for exploring how one such mobile-agent-based ecosystem service (MABES), pollination, is affected by land-use change, and then generalize the model to other MABES. The model includes interactions and feedbacks among policies affecting land use, market forces and the biology of the organisms involved. Animal-mediated pollination contributes to the production of goods of value to humans such as crops; it also bolsters reproduction of wild plants on which other services or service-providing organisms depend. About one-third of crop production depends on animal pollinators, while 60-90% of plant species require an animal pollinator. The sensitivity of mobile organisms to ecological factors that operate across spatial scales makes the services provided by a given community of mobile agents highly contextual. Services vary, depending on the spatial and temporal distribution of resources surrounding the site, and on biotic interactions occurring locally, such as competition among pollinators for resources, and among plants for pollinators. The value of the resulting goods or services may feed back via market-based forces to influence land-use policies, which in turn influence land management practices that alter local habitat conditions and landscape structure. Developing conceptual models for MABES aids in identifying knowledge gaps, determining research priorities, and targeting interventions that can be applied in an adaptive management context.

In a field experiment the effects of Sumicidin (super) 5EC (fenitrothion), Metasystox EC25 (oxydemeton-methyl) and Tamaron SL600 (methamidophos), applied at different dosages, were evaluated against peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and its parasitoid Aphidius matricariae Haliday on Cardinal and Desiree (respectively partially resistant and susceptible potato cultivars to M. persicae). Sumicidin (super) 5EC was found about 30% more effective in reducing aphid populations than the other insecticides tested. The highest doses of each insecticide caused maximum aphid mortality; in general aphid mortality appeared dose dependent. Almost all the higher and lower doses of the tested insecticides were about 19% more effective on Cardinal than on Desiree. The most significant result was the synergistic interaction at the lower doses with plant resistance, so that the same level of control was recorded with second highest dose on Cardinal as with the highest dose on Desiree. Also the same control level was achieved at the lowest dosage rate on Cardinal compared with the next higher dose on the Desiree. Sumicidin (super) 5EC was found least toxic to the parasitoid, A. matricariae in terms of percent parasitism, emergence of parasitoids and number of mature eggs in the emerging female parasitoids; increase of about 22, 67 and 47% respectively were found in parasitoid performance with Tamaron SL600 which was found comparatively highly toxic. The highest doses of all insecticides were found clearly toxic to the parasitoid. In general, effects on the parasitoid were dose dependent. Maximum yield was obtained from the second highest dose of Sumicidin (super) 5EC.
