Diabetes in pregnancy: are we providing the best care?

This third and final report of the CEMACH national diabetes programme comes at an important time in the national drive to improve services for women with diabetes in pregnancy. The National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetes requires the NHS to develop, implement and monitor policies that seek to empower and support women with diabetes to optimise the outcomes of their pregnancy. The CEMACH report shows that, whilst progress has been made in improving services for women with diabetes and their babies, there is much still to be done to meet the standards recommended by the NSF. Too many women continue to be poorly prepared for pregnancy in the critical areas of glycaemic control and folic acid supplementation. The report underlines the need for an increased focus on diabetes preconception care services and the development of strategies to educate women with diabetes of childbearing age. The growing proportion of women with type 2 diabetes during pregnancy, many of whom are from minority ethnic groups, presents an additional challenge for health services in developing responsive and accessible services.This CEMACH report has identifi ed several areas of good clinical practice during pregnancy in women with pre-existing diabetes. However, there continue to be areas where there is room for improvement, including antenatal fetal surveillance, glycaemic control during labour and delivery and postnatal diabetes care. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is currently in the fi nal stages of development of its new guideline for the management of diabetes in pregnancy. This guideline, when taken together with the CEMACH report, will provide local health services with an unprecedented wealth of material on which to base their development of improved services for women with diabetes in pregnancy.��

Cope with Confidence - survey of heart failure patient experience

The aim of this survey is to find out how to increase the confidence of people living with heart failure so they have a better quality of life, and can work in partnership with health care professionals and support services in managing their condition. Your result shows a large abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) that may need surgery

This leaflet is given to all men who have attended screening through the Northern Ireland Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme and been diagnosed with a large AAA.The leaflet provides: background information on the AAA screening programme; details on what a large AAA is; information on the process of referral to a team of vascular specialists;details on the operation to treat a large AAA;important information on the symptoms of a ruptured AAA;lifestyle advice that may help those men diagnosed with an AAA. Men who have been diagnosed with a large AAA will be invited to meet a team of vascular specialists for further assessment within two or three weeks of their scan. Following additional medical tests, the patient may be offered surgery to treat the large AAA. Those men assessed as unsuitable for an operation will continue to be monitored within the vascular service.

Northern Ireland regional breastfeeding peer support training

This resource�has been produced for breastfeeding coordinators and breastfeeding peer support trainers who provide training for peer support volunteers. �� The resource has been distributed by PHA directly to those involved in breastfeeding peer support programmes in Northern Ireland. Speech, language and communication therapy action plan

This is the first update newsletter of the Speech, language and communication therapy action plan. The action plan was developed by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) with the aim that all children and young people at risk of or presenting with speech, language or communication needs will be able to benefit from timely support and integrated services that best meet their requirements.The Public Health Agency (PHA), in partnership with the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB), has been tasked with implementing the action plan.The update includes news on the publication of the Healthy child, health future framework and highlights other points of progress so far, including the development of the Family Support NI website. There is also an invite for parents to join a focus group to influence and assist with the implementation of the action plan.�

NI Registry of Self-harm Annual Report 2012/13

The purpose of the registry is to improve understanding about self-harm and related behaviours in Northern Ireland. The information gathered will be used to monitor trends and patterns over time and, perhaps most importantly, will help shape the development of services and support to meet need. The information will also help provide trusts and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety with a more accurate understanding of the impact of self-harm on Emergency Departments.

ASIST training helping to tackle suicide

Work to help communities prevent suicide has taken a further step forward with over 50 ASIST Trainers from across Northern Ireland completing the new ASIST 11 upgrader trainer course.The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) enables people in a position of trust to recognise risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide.The Public Health Agency (PHA) funded the upgrading training as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting quality training for a range of individuals, communities and organisations.Madeline Heaney, the PHA's strategic lead for Suicide Prevention, explained: "This programme enables people who have been trained to become more willing, ready and able to help those at risk of suicide, which can be vital in a crisis situation.�"We want to empower people who are in position of responsibility and care to know what to do if they find themselves in a situation where someone is at risk of taking their own lives."�ASIST has been delivered in Northern Ireland since 2003 and the course is designed for all caregivers or any person in a position of trust, making it useful for a range of people. The training is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, teachers, counsellors, youth workers, police and prison staff, school support staff, clergy, community volunteers and the general public.This most recent training, which ASIST Trainers must complete, builds on previous editions and offers advances that help meet current challenges and provides new opportunities in helping to reduce suicides within communities.The intensive Trainer Upgrade was held in Derry/ Londonderry.More information on looking after your mental health and the support which is available across Northern Ireland can be found at www.mindingyourhead.info��You can also talk to your GP for advice.If you or someone you know is in distress or despair, call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000. Construcció i explotació d'un magatzem de dades per a l'anàlisi estadístic dels resultats del Campionat de Fórmula 1

En els darrers anys les organitzacions han anat agafant consciència de la importància de la gestió de la seva informació. D'aquesta necessitat d'organitzar les pròpies dades d'una forma coherent i eficient per al seu anàlisi sorgeixen els magatzems de dades. El projecte "Construcció i explotació d'un magatzem de dades per a l'anàlisi estadístic dels resultats del Campionat de Fórmula 1" s'emmarca dins aquest context i te com a objectiu el disseny d'un magatzem de dades per a cobrir les necessitats del Institut Català d'Esports de Motor (ICEM) en la gestió de les seves dades referents a la Fórmula 1. En aquest projecte s'han executat les diferents fases necessàries per a la creació d'un nou magatzem. En primer lloc s'ha fet l'anàlisi de requeriments i de les dades disponibles. A continuació s'ha fet el disseny i la implementació física del magatzem de dades. Seguidament s'ha procedit amb l'extracció, transformació i càrrega de dades originals (ETL) i per finalitzar s'han creat els informes. Com a resultat s'han obtingut una sèrie d'informes per a ser consumits de manera immediata pels usuaris del ICEM. Aquests informes han de permetre l'anàlisi de les dades d'una forma senzilla i àgil. A més s'ha implementat un sistema d'actualització automàtic de les dades que per al manteniment de la informació del magatzem.La implementació del magatzem de dades s'ha fet sobre una base de dades Oracle 10g Express Edition i els informes s'ha dissenyat amb l'eina Oracle Discoverer. Per a l'automatització de les dades s'ha fet servir a més visual basic script i l'eina de càrrega SQL*Loader.

Gestió i creació d'una plataforma d'avaluació de coneixements

Treball de Final de Carrera que consisteix en el desenvolupament d'una aplicació amb arquitectura J2EE. Els bastiments escollits són JSF 2.0, Spring 3 i Hibernate 3. Aquests tres bastiments cobreixen les necessitats de desenvolupament d'una aplicació web. L'objecte del TFC ha estat el desenvolupament d'una aplicació per poder executar tests i així poder avaluar els coneixements dels alumnes.

Myelin gene expression during demyelination and remyelination in aggregating brain cell cultures.

Remyelination can be studied in aggregating rat brain cell cultures after limited demyelination. Demyelination was induced using a monoclonal antibody against myelin/oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG mAb), in the presence of complement. De- and remyelination were assessed by measuring myelin basic protein (MBP). Two days after removing the MOG mAb, MBP levels reached 50% of controls and after 7 days 93%. During this period, cell proliferation determined by [14C]thymidine incorporation was similar in remyelinating and control cultures. Hormones and growth factors were tested for possible stimulatory effect on remyelinating cultures. Bovine growth hormone (bGH), triiodothyronine (T3), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) did not improve remyelination. Only epidermal growth factor (EGF) increased the level of remyelination. PDGF increased the rate of cell proliferation in both control and remyelinating cultures. A significant proportion of oligodendrocytes entered the cell division cycle and were not available for remyelination. The results obtained with PDGF and FGF (inhibition) support the idea that a pool of progenitor cells was still present and able to proliferate and differentiate into myelinating oligodendrocytes. The levels of myelin protein mRNAs were investigated during de- and remyelination. During demyelination, myelin protein mRNA levels decreased to approximately 50% of control cultures and returned to normal during remyelination. These preliminary results indicate that normal levels of gene transcription are sufficient to meet the increased need for newly synthesized myelin proteins during remyelination.

A partir de l'anàlisi organitzativa de l'empresa King-eclient i la detecció de mancances relatives a la gestió de la informació i del coneixement, aquest treball vol dissenyar un sistema de gestió dels recursos d'informació per tal de gestionar i distribuir els recursos d'informació més representatius i operatius disponibles a Internet que cobreixin les necessitats d'informació a King-eclient i que puguin convertir-se en coneixement organitzatiu.

Transnational study of roles/functions and associated ICT competencies for Higher Education teachers

Aquest estudi forma part del projecte eLene-TLC1 Virtual Campus (2007-2008) recolzat pel programa eLearning de la Comissió Europea. L'objectiu d'aquest projecte és que els professors i els estudiants facin el millor ús possible de les TIC en l'educació superior, preparant als professors per als estudiants de la generació xarxa, permetent als estudiants a la transferència de coneixements i pràctiques de la vida quotidiana per al seu aprenentatge i estimular tant la integració plena de pràctiques innovadores d'ensenyament i d'aprenentatge possibilitades per un entorn tecnològic en constant evolució. Per tal de cobrir part d'aquest objectiu general, es va concebre un estudi per examinar les competències en TIC professors d'Educació Superior en entorns d'aprenentatge en línia.
