War related news includes: Page 103 - Weekly Retrospect: Troop movements of Captain Morgan and a company of light dragoons from Niagara to Greenbush; report on the Battle of Queenston Heights including a casualty listing and a mention of the death of Major General Isaac Brock and Colonel McDonald and the American's respect for Brock; British attach of Fort Erie and the Village of Black Rock; the privateer Globe under Captain Murphy returning to Baltimore after capturing a British letter of marque; First Nation / Indian attacks near St. Louis; movements of General W. Harrison and army from Fort Defiance to the rapids of Miama (Miami). The rest of the newspaper contains literary works (poems and translations), essays (including on celibacy), marriages, deaths and other anecdotes. The motto on the front page states: "Visiting Every Flower with Labour Meet, and Gathering all its Treasures, Sweet by Sweet."

Les fonctions de la dialectique chez Aristote selon Topiques I,2

Le but de ce mémoire est d’expliciter en détail et de voir la portée d'un passage bien précis du traité des Topiques, ouvrage où Aristote tente d'élaborer une méthode qui permettra de raisonner de manière dialectique. Dans le deuxième chapitre du premier livre (I, 2), il énonce de manière succincte trois utilités que le traité en question peut procurer à celui qui possède et maîtrise adéquatement cette méthode. En premier lieu, la dialectique servirait de gymnastique intellectuelle pour former l'esprit et lui donner plus de souplesse dans ses raisonnements. Dans un second temps, elle serait utile dans les rencontres de tous les jours avec autrui parce qu’elle permettrait de discuter et d'argumenter sur un sujet donné avec le premier venu. Enfin, il semble également que la dialectique soit utile pour les «connaissances de caractère philosophique», en ce sens qu'elle permettrait de développer les apories et ultimement, d'établir les principes ou les notions premières de chaque science. Dans ce travail, je me propose donc d’examiner chacune de ces prétendues utilités afin de voir comment, et dans quelle mesure, nous pouvons réellement affirmer que la dialectique s’avère profitable pour chacun des services énumérés en Topiques I, 2.

Problemas y consecuencias del resurgir del pragmatismo norteamericano: 1952-1976

Revisión crítica de la ‘versión heredada’ sobre el resurgir del pragmatismo norteamericano. Aquí sostengo que ésta es una narrativa sobre la historia de la filosofía que puede ser usada para “reivindicar” la continuidad o para “añorar” la pérdida de esa tradición. Presento tres argumentos a favor de mi tesis sobre la versión heredada: i) es insuficiente para explicar el surgimiento del pragmatismo; ii) es un tipo de narrativa que hace plausible una imagen de la filosofía; iii) impide apreciar que la formación del canon obedece a los propósitos de los seguidores del movimiento.

Prematuration of bovine oocytes with butyrolactone I reversibly arrests meiosis without increasing meiotic abnormalities after in vitro maturation

Objectives: Asynchrony between nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation, and possibly damage to the oocyte meiotic spindle, limits the application of in vitro maturation (IVM) in assisted reproduction. Several studies have suggested that Prematuration with meiosis blockers may improve oocyte quality after IVM, favoring early embryogenesis. Thus, we investigated the effect of Prematuration with the nuclear maturation inhibitor butyrolactone I (BLI) on the meiotic spindle and chromosomal configuration of bovine oocytes. Study design: Immature oocytes obtained from cows slaughtered in a slaughterhouse (n = 840) were divided into the following groups: (1) control (n = 325), submitted only to IVM in TCM199 for 24 h; (2) BLI 18 h (n = 208) submitted to meiotic blockage with 100 mu M BLI for 24 h (Prematuration) and then induction of IVM in TCM199 for 18 h; and (3) BLI 24 h (n = 307), pre-matured with 100 mu m BLI for 24 h followed by 24 h of IVM in TCM199. The oocytes were then fixed, stained by immunofluorescence for morphological visualization of both microtubules and chromatin, and evaluated. Results: Meiotic arrest occurred in 90.2% of the oocytes cultured with BLI. Maturation rates were similar for all groups (80.3%, 73.6% and 82.7% for the control, BLI 18 h and BLI 24 h groups, respectively). We observed 81.3% normal oocytes in metaphase II in the control group, and 80.0% and 81.2% in the BLI 18 h and BLI 24 h groups, respectively. The incidence of meiotic anomalies did not differ between groups (18.7%, 20.0% and 18.8% for the control, BLI 18 h and BLI 24 h, respectively). Conclusion: Prematuration with butyrolactone I reversibly arrests meiosis without damaging the meiotic spindle or the chromosome distribution of bovine oocytes after in vitro maturation. Karaktäristika för kvinnor i Norden som väljer en planerad hemförlossning : En jämförelse mellan Sverige och Norden

Bakgrund: Endast ett fåtal kvinnor i Norden väljer en planerad hemförlossning. I Sverige har en studie gjorts för att undersöka vilka karaktärsdrag som går att urskilja hos dessa kvinnor men liknande studier saknas för Norden. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva vad som är karaktäristika för kvinnor i Norden som väljer en planerad hemförlossning samt jämföra karaktäristika hos kvinnor i Sverige med kvinnor från tre andra nordiska länder. Metod: Studien är en retrospektiv tvärsnittsstudie med kvantitativ ansats. Materialet är insamlat mellan 2009-2011 inom ramen för forskningsnätverket ”Nordic Homebirth” via enkätformulär på internetsidan www.nordichomebirth.com. Icke-parametriska analyser genomfördes med hjälp av Chitvå-test. Resultat: Totalt svarade 778 kvinnor på enkäten. Kvinnorna i Sverige var i genomsnitt två år äldre och i högre grad omföderskor och sammanboende/gifta. Fler kvinnor i Norden var ensamstående/ej sammanboende jämfört med de svenska kvinnorna. Ingen skillnad i utbildningsnivå fanns mellan kvinnorna i Sverige och Norden. Slutsats: Skillnader i karaktäristika för kvinnor som väljer en planerad hemförlossning i Norden finns avseende ålder, paritet, civilstånd och ursprungsland. Bättre registrering av planerade hemförlossningar behövs för att kunna göra säkrare undersökningar av denna grupp. Nyckelord: planerad hemförlossning, karaktäristika, kvinnor, Sverige, Norden

Ce texte analyse le cérémonial royal de la monarchie constitutionnelle brésilienne: le sacre et le couronnement de l'Empereur D. Pedro I. Notre examen de ce cérémonial a comme point de départ son caractère liturgique, pour comprendre pourquoi cet aspect a été considéré essentiel alors pour affirmer l'autonomie du nouveau royaume et, en même temps, a contribué pour définir le pouvoir politique de l'Empire du Brésil.

Politics, press and military participation in the abdication of d. Pedro I

This work seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the Abdication, analyzing how and why sections of the army joined the liberal groups against the emperor, focusing on the period that immediately preceded this event. The argument is that the alliance between sections of the army and the liberal groups in 1831 was possible because the expansion of the "public space" in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a process in which newspapers such as "O Republico" played a key role as they became a privileged locus for political disputes. The article shows that that newspaper helped to build a political identity based on the defense of Brazilian interests against Portuguese despotism, giving momentum to internal conflicts around this subject that were already taking place among sections of the army and hence triggering the process that would lead to the Abdication.

Gonadal Maturation in the Cobia Rachycentron canadum from the Northcentral Gulf of Mexico

Gonadal maturation of cobia, Rachycentron canadum, was evaluated by examining 508 specimens from its recreational fishery. Specimens were collected off southeast Louisiana to northwest Florida by hook-and-line during February through October 1987-1991. Fork lengths (FL) of these fish ranged from 580-1,530 mm, with corresponding weights of 2.0-43.5 kg. The female:male ratio was 1:0.37. Using a combination of oocyte size frequency and histological assessment of many of the fish, we determined that females were ripe from May through September, with atretic oocytes occurring in some fish from July through October. Degenerating hydrated oocytes in July and October and the presence of resting ovaries in July suggest two major spawning periods; however, monthly gonosomatic indices peaking in May, followed by a steady decline, do not support that finding. Ovaries were placed into undeveloped, early developing, mid-developing, or late developing categories based upon oocyte size-frequency distributions. Developing ovaries had two or three modes of oocytes larger than 30 μm. Batch fecundity was estimated to be 2.6×106 - 1.91×108 oocytes, depending on the size of fish/ovaries. The smallest female with oocytes exhibiting vitellogenesis was 834 mm FL. This fish was 2 years old based its otolith evaluation. The smallest male with an abundance of spermatozoa in its testes was 640 mm FL and 1 year old based on otolith evaluation; smaller males were not examined. Females larger than 840 mm FL had vitellogenic oocytes in March and April. A few fish still had vitellogenic oocytes in early October, but none did by late October. When Gilson’s fluid was used to assess ovarian tissue, the fresh weight of the tissue was reduced by 20% after being stored for 3 months. The diameter of oocytes shrunk about 25% in Gilson’s fluid which was 11% less than those fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned. Tissue sections from specific individuals, each demonstrating a variety of different developmental stages, were similar regardless of whether they were obtained from the anterior, middle, or posterior portion of either ovary.
