Assessment of Dowel Bar Research, August 2002

This report presents the latest technological gaps in dowel bar research based upon completed and ongoing dowel bar research from across the nation. In order to obtain this collection of information about dowel bars, a search was conducted on a nationwide level. The technological gaps and duplications of the research were then determined. In addition, this report also provides a brief annotated bibliography of all sources used to determine the gaps in technology and knowledge for dowel bar and alternative dowel bar topics as applied to highway pavements.

Use of mobile devices to answer online surveys: implications for research.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing use of mobile devices to access the Internet. We examined whether participants who used a mobile device to access a brief online survey were quicker to respond to the survey but also, less likely to complete it than participants using a traditional web browser. FINDINGS: Using data from a recently completed online intervention trial, we found that participants using mobile devices were quicker to access the survey but less likely to complete it compared to participants using a traditional web browser. More concerning, mobile device users were also less likely to respond to a request to complete a six week follow-up survey compared to those using traditional web browsers. CONCLUSIONS: With roughly a third of participants using mobile devices to answer an online survey in this study, the impact of mobile device usage on survey completion rates is a concern. Parallel Research, Multiple Intellectual Property Right Protection Instruments, and the Correlation among R&D Projects, September 2005

The choice of a research path in attacking scientific and technological problems is a significant component of firms’ R&D strategy. One of the findings of the patent races literature is that, in a competitive market setting, firms’ noncooperative choices of research projects display an excessive degree of correlation, as compared to the socially optimal level. The paper revisits this question in a context in which firms have access to trade secrets, in addition to patents, to assert intellectual property rights (IPR) over their discoveries. We find that the availability of multiple IPR protection instruments can move the paths chosen by firms engaged in an R&D race toward the social optimum.

Moblie Concrete Research Lab, 2004

A new, state-of-the-art mobile lab has recently been launched from the PCC Center at Iowa State University to bring high-tech concrete materials and concrete pavement testing capabilities to the field. The Mobile Concrete Research Lab has been custom built and fully outfitted with equipment capable of performing a comprehensive suite of tests.

Introducing diversity in public organisations : diminishing theoretical ambiguity and controversy by empirical research

Many theoretical dissertations have an unclear definition of diversity and when interpreting strategies of organizational diversity policies, theories often contradict each other. It is argued that this ambiguity and controversy can be diminished by basing theory on diversity and diversity policy more on qualitative structured descriptive empirical comparisons.This argument is elaborated in two steps. First, diversity is shown to be a social construction: dynamic and plural in nature, dependent on the social-historical context. Second, the common theoretical dichotomy between diversity policy as equal opportunities or as diversity management in shown to be possibly misleading; empirical studies indicate more practical differentiation in types of diversity policy, manifested in public and private organizations. As qualitative comparisons are rare, especially in the European context and especially among public organizations, this article calls for more contributions of this kind and provides an analytical framework to assist scholars in the field of diversity studies.

El Corpus de l'IULA: etiquetaris

El projecte central que es duu a terme a l'Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada (IULA) de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra és el corpus de Llenguatges especialitzats. En el marc d'aquest projecte —que implica cinc dominis d'especialitat (dret, economia, informàtica, medi ambient i medicina) i cinc llengües (català, castellà, francès, anglès i alemany)— s'han desenvolupat dos etiquetaris per a la llengua catalana i castellana. Amb el desenvolupament d'aquests etiquetaris es pretén facilitar l'etapa del processament lingüístic del corpus. En aquest paper es discuteixen, d'una banda, alguns aspectes teòrics relatius a la construcció d'etiquetaris i, de l'altra, es presenten els dos etiquetaris que s'han elaborat a l'IULA.

10 anys del Corpus de l'IULA

En aquest paper, es presenten els criteris de treball que s'han seguit durant els 10 anys en què s'ha anat constituint el corpus de l'IULA. S'exposa l'estat de les dades del corpus, els recursos lèxics utilitzats per al tractament de les dades (diccionaris i etiquetaris) i les eines constituïdes o adaptades. Es dedica especial atenció a la documentació de la cadena de treball de processament del corpus, des de l'adquisició dels textos en format electrònic fins a la seva incorporació definitiva al corpus.

El Corpus de l'IULA: descripció

El principal projecte de recerca desenvolupat a l'Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada (IULA) de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra és el projecte de Llenguatges especialitzats, sota el qual s'aglutina la totalitat dels investigadors pertanyents a aquest centre. És en aquest marc de recerca on es duu a terme la constitució d'un corpus plurilingüe (català, castellà, francès, anglès i alemany), especialitzat en les àrees del dret, l'economia, la informàtica, el medi ambient i la medicina. En aquest article es descriuen els criteris que s'han tingut en compte per al disseny d'aquest recurs lingüístic i cada una de les fases de desenvolupament que s'han seguit. El resultat de diferents estadis en el procés d'elaboració del corpus es mostra en un conjunt d'annexos al final de l'article, on s'incorpora, a més, una síntesi de l'estat actual del projecte, periòdicament actualitzada.

Marcatge estructural i morfosintàctic del Corpus Tècnic amb l'estàndard SGML

L'edició de textos fent ús de mitjans informàtics ha comportat avantatges i inconvenients. Mentre que ha fet molt accessible l'edició acurada de textos també ha provocat tot un seguit de problemes, un del quals és la dificultat de compartir recursos.Per altra banda, la lingüística necessita emprar corpus voluminosos per conèixer amb més precisió i fonament el comportament real del llenguatge. És evident que l'obtenció i consegüent preparació d'un corpus per a la seva explotació esdevé un procés costós en temps i recursos, motiu pel qual és força atractiu i gairebé necessari compartir aquest material de recerca amb altres organitzacions. En aquest treball s'examinen les diferents propostes d'aplicació de l'estàndard SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) en la constitució de corpus textuals per a la recerca lingüística, amb èmfasi especial en les solucions proposades a l'Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
