Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is transversal to a broad and heterogeneous set of human beings, and assumed as a serious diagnosis and risk stratification problem. Although one may be faced with or had at his disposition different tools as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of ACS, they have to be previously evaluated and validated in different scenarios and patient cohorts. Besides ensuring that a diagnosis is correct, attention should also be directed to ensure that therapies are either correctly or safely applied. Indeed, this work will focus on the development of a diagnosis decision support system in terms of its knowledge representation and reasoning mechanisms, given here in terms of a formal framework based on Logic Programming, complemented with a problem solving methodology to computing anchored on Artificial Neural Networks. On the one hand it caters for the evaluation of ACS predisposing risk and the respective Degree-of-Confidence that one has on such a happening. On the other hand it may be seen as a major development on the Multi-Value Logics to understand things and ones behavior. Undeniably, the proposed model allows for an improvement of the diagnosis process, classifying properly the patients that presented the pathology (sensitivity ranging from 89.7% to 90.9%) as well as classifying the absence of ACS (specificity ranging from 88.4% to 90.2%).

In this article I develop an analysis in the context of the global society, a context split into its practical subsystems, due to the prevailing logic of confrontation and violence. Some of its expressions are studied, in the fields of international law and geopolitical relations between given societies. Also discussed are analyses of the relations between religions and cultural systems, from the perspective of mutual destruction logistics. In a context of violent interactions through diverse levels of social reality, I claim for a different strategy to guide social practices, from the recognition of universal human rights for concrete human beings, understanding that such recognition implies reducing the historical production of deaths, and the magnification of human life and of the conditions for its reproduction.

This article summarizes the main findings of a research on literacy made with immigrant Nicaraguan men and women workers residing in Costa Rica, specifically with parents from students at the Gonzalo Monge School in Pital, San Carlos. In this investigation, the more relevant motives for these Nicaraguan immigrants to come to Costa Rica are established. In addition, some of their needs living in this country are stipulated as well as the role of informal education in their lives. It is clearly important to design a literacy proposal on informal education that allows immigrant Nicaraguan men and women workers to prepare and educate for life and work. According to the Project for Latin America and the Caribbean, Education for Everyone program, education is understood as one basic need of the person: every person –child, young or adult- must have the basic opportunity of taking advantage of education. These needs include not only essential tools for learning (such as reading, writing, learning problems…), but also basic learning contents required for human beings to: survive, develop their capacities, live and work with dignity, fully participate on development, improve the quality of their lives, take their fundamental decisions and continue learning.

The objective of this paper on peace education is to generate a reflection, through the metaphor of the butterfly effect, on the importance of educating for peace during the change process of human beings and society. It proposes education for peace as a human right, an experience and learning process that is put into practice by human beings. It aims at changing attitudes and actions to create harmonious relationships based on the respect and recognition of human rights, and the freedom and dignity of every person.

The holistic paradigm has transformed modern society to develop a culture of gender in order to promote a quest and redefinition of the feminine and masculine not exclusive traits, but as equilibrium in the opportunities and equity. This is a new culture where everyone is seen as holistic human beings. The new paradigm promotes critical pedagogy to rescue harmony, acceptance and social freedom in order to recover gender equity. Society needs a change of paradigm for masculine and feminine relationships, with a new consciousness developed by learning experiences that dignify men and women and with a deep spiritual feeling of life; so both of them can live freely.

Prokaryotic organisms are one of the most successful forms of life, they are present in all known ecosystems. The deluge diversity of bacteria reflects their ability to colonise every environment. Also, human beings host trillions of microorganisms in their body districts, including skin, mucosae, and gut. This symbiosis is active for all other terrestrial and marine animals, as well as plants. With the term holobiont we refer, with a single word, to the systems including both the host and its symbiotic microbial species. The coevolution of bacteria within their ecological niches reflects the adaptation of both host and guest species, and it is shaped by complex interactions that are pivotal for determining the host state. Nowadays, thanks to the current sequencing technologies, Next Generation Sequencing, we have unprecedented tools for investigating the bacterial life by studying the prokaryotic genome sequences. NGS revolution has been sustained by the advancements in computational performance, in terms of speed, storage capacity, algorithm development and hardware costs decreasing following the Moore’s Law. Bioinformaticians and computational biologists design and implement ad hoc tools able to analyse high-throughput data and extract valuable biological information. Metagenomics requires the integration of life and computational sciences and it is uncovering the deluge diversity of the bacterial world. The present thesis work focuses mainly on the analysis of prokaryotic genomes under different aspects. Being supervised by two groups at the University of Bologna, the Biocomputing group and the group of Microbial Ecology of Health, I investigated three different topics: i) antimicrobial resistance, particularly with respect to missense point mutations involved in the resistant phenotype, ii) bacterial mechanisms involved in xenobiotic degradation via the computational analysis of metagenomic samples, and iii) the variation of the human gut microbiota through ageing, in elderly and longevous individuals.
