One of the most serious impediments to the continued successful use of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements is rutting. The Iowa Department of Transportation has required 85% crushed particles and 75 blow Marshall mix design in an effort to prevent rutting on interstate roadways. The objective of this research and report is to develop relation~hips between the percent of crushed particles and resistance to rutting in pavement through the use of various laboratory test procedures. HMA mixtures were made with 0, 30, 60, 85 and 100% crushed gravel, crushed limestone and crushed quartzite combined with uncrushed sand and gravel. These aggregate combinations were used with 4, 5 and 6% asphalt cement (ac). Laboratory testing included Marshall stability, resilient modulus, indirect tensile and creep. A creep resistance factor (CRF) was developed to provide a single numeric value for creep test results. The CRF values relate well to the amount of crushed particles and the perceived resistance to rutting. The indirect tensile test is highly dependent on the ac with a small effect from the percent of crushed particles. The Marshall stability from 75 blow compaction relates well to the percent of crushed particles. The resilient modulus in some cases is highly affected by grade of ac.

The Iowa Department of Transportation began creep and resilient modulus testing of asphalt concrete mixtures in 1989. Part 1 of this research reported in January 1990 was a laboratory study of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures made with O, 30, 60, 85 and 100% crushed gravel, crushed limestone and crushed quartzite combined with uncrushed sand and gravel. Creep test results from Marshall specimens related well to the percent of crushed particles and the perceived resistance to rutting. The objective of this research, part 2, was to determine if there was a meaningful correlation between pavement rut depth and the resilient modulus or the creep resistance factor. Four and six inch diameter cores were drilled from rutted primary and interstate pavements and interstate pavements with design changes intended to resist rutting. The top 2 1/2 inches of each core, most of which was surface course, was used for creep and resilient modulus testing. There is a good correlation between the resilient modulus of four and six inch diameter cores. Creep resistance factors of four and six inch diameter cores also correlated well. There is a poor correlation between resilient modulus and the creep resistance factor. The rut depth per million 18,000 pound equivalent single axle loadings (ESAL) for these pavements did not correlate well with either the resilient modulus or the creep resistance factor.

Plasma catecholamines provide a reliable biomarker of sympathetic activity. The low circulating concentrations of catecholamines and analytical interferences require tedious sample preparation and long chromatographic runs to ensure their accurate quantification by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Published or commercially available methods relying on solid phase extraction technology lack sensitivity or require derivatization of catecholamine by hazardous reagents prior to tandem mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Here, we manufactured a novel 96-well microplate device specifically designed to extract plasma catecholamines prior to their quantification by a new and highly sensitive ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method. Processing time, which included sample purification on activated aluminum oxide and elution, is less than 1 h per 96-well microplate. The UPLC-MS/MS analysis run time is 2.0 min per sample. This UPLC-MS/MS method does not require a derivatization step, reduces the turnaround time by 10-fold compared to conventional methods used for routine application, and allows catecholamine quantification in reduced plasma sample volumes (50-250 μL, e.g., from children and mice).

New plate-tectonic reconstructions of the Gondwana margin suggest that the location of Gondwana-derived terranes should not only be guided by the models, but should also consider the possible detrital input from some Asian blocks (Hunia), supposed to have been located along the Cambrian Gondwana margin, and accreted in the Silurian to the North-Chinese block. Consequently, the Gondwana margin has to be subdivided into a more western domain, where the future Avalonian blocks will be separated from Gondwana by the opening Rheic Ocean, whereas in its eastern continuation, hosting the future basement areas of Central Europe, different periods of crustal extension should be distinguished. Instead of applying a rather cylindrical model, it is supposed that crustal extension follows a much more complex pattern, where local back-arcs or intra-continental rifts are involved. Guided by the age data of magmatic rocks and the pattern of subsidence curves, the following extensional events can be distinguished: During the early to middle Cambrian, a back-arc setting guided the evolution at the Gondwana margin. Contemporaneous intra-continental rift basins developed at other places related to a general post-PanAfrican extensional phase affecting Africa Upper Cambrian formation of oceanic crust is manifested in the Chamrousse area, and may have lateral cryptic relics preserved in other places. This is regarded as the oceanisation of some marginal basins in a context of back-arc rifting. These basins were closed in a mid-Ordovician tectonic phase, related to the subduction of buoyant material (mid-ocean ridge?) Since the Early Ordovician, a new phase of extension is observed, accompanied by a large-scale volcanic activity, erosion of the rift shoulders generated detritus (Armorican Quartzite) and the rift basins collected detrital zircons from a wide hinterland. This phase heralded the opening of Palaeotethys, but it failed due to the Silurian collision (Eo-Variscan phase) of an intra-oceanic arc with the Gondwana margin. During this time period, at the eastern wing of the Gondwana margin begins the drift of the future Hunia microcontinents, through the opening of an eastern prolongation of the already existing Rheic Ocean. The passive margin of the remaining Gondwana was composed of the Galatian superterranes, constituents of the future Variscan basement areas. Remaining under the influence of crustal extension, they will start their drift to Laurussia since the earliest Devonian during the opening of the Palaeotethys Ocean. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. OBJECTIVES: Reactivation of latent tuberculosis (TB) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients treated with antitumor necrosis factor-alpha medication is a serious problem. Currently, TB screening includes chest x-rays and a tuberculin skin test (TST). The interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-G-IT) shows better specificity for diagnosing TB than the skin test. This study evaluates the two test methods among IBD patients. METHODS: Both TST and IGRA were performed on 212 subjects (114 Crohn's disease, 44 ulcerative colitis, 10 indeterminate colitis, 44 controls). RESULTS: Eighty-one percent of IBD patients were under immunosuppressive therapy; 71% of all subjects were vaccinated with Bacille Calmette Guérin; 18% of IBD patients and 43% of controls tested positive with the skin test (P < 0.0001). Vaccinated controls tested positive more often with the skin test (52%) than did vaccinated IBD patients (23%) (P = 0.011). Significantly fewer immunosuppressed patients tested positive with the skin test than did patients not receiving therapy (P = 0.007); 8% of patients tested positive with the QFT-G-IT test (14/168) compared to 9% (4/44) of controls. Test agreement was significantly higher in the controls (P = 0.044) compared to the IBD group. CONCLUSIONS: Agreement between the two test methods is poor in IBD patients. In contrast to the QFT-G-IT test, the TST is negatively influenced by immunosuppressive medication and vaccination status, and should thus be replaced by the IGRA for TB screening in immunosuppressed patients having IBD.

Samples of both recycled and nonrecycled asphaltic concrete were extracted in increments by the Abson Recovery Method and the penetration of the asphalt from each increment determined. The recycled projects were plantsite operations containing various amounts of virgin gravel. Cored samples were taken from the pavements on Kossuth County roads that were constructed as recycled projects in 1975, 1976, and 1977. Cored samples were also taken from a Kossuth County paving project done in 1975, that was not recycled. Comparison mix samples from 1978 construction projects in Marshall and Woodbury Counties of non - recycled projects are included. The test data from the penetrations of the recovered asphalt indicates that mixing of the old and new asphalt occurs very extensively in the hot recycling process. In laboratory controlled conditions it is difficult to coat aggregates with different penetration asphalts and prevent them from mixing.

The Iowa D.O.T. specifications do not require 100 percent of 50 blow Marshall density (generally 94%) for field compaction. However, stabilities are determined in the Laboratory on specimens compacted to 100 percent of Marshall density. The purpose of this study is to determine the stabilities of specimens compacted to various densities which are below 100 percent of the 50 blow Marshall density.

This past winter the sieve analysis of combined aggregate was investigated. This study was given No. 26 by the Central Laboratory. The purpose of this work was to try and develop a sieve analysis procedure for combined aggregate which is less time consuming and has the same accuracy as the method described in I.M. 304. In an attempt to use a variety of aggregates for this investigation, a request was made to each District Materials Office to obtain at least 3 different combined aggregate samples in their respective districts. At the same time it was also requested that the field technician test these samples, prior to submitting them to the Central Laboratory. The field technician was instructed to test each sample as described in method I.M. 304 and also by a modified AASHTO T27 method which will be identified in the report as Method A. The modified AASHTO Method A was identical to T27 with the exception that a smaller sample is used for testing. The field technicians submitted the samples, test results and also comments regarding the modified AASHTO procedure. The general comments of the modified AASHTO procedure were: The method was much simpler to follow; however, it took about the same amount of time so there was no real advantage. After reviewing AASHTO T27, T164, I.M. 304 and Report No. FHWA-RD-77-53 another test method was purposed. Report No. FHWA-RD-77-53 is a report prepared by FHWA from data they gathered concerning control practices and shortcut or alternative test methods for aggregate gradation. A second test method was developed which also was very similar to AASHTO T27, The test procedure for this method is attached and is identified as Method B. The following is a summary of test results submitted by the Field Technicians and obtained by the aggregate section of the Central Laboratory.

All noncomplying penetration and absolute viscosity results must be verified before being reported. This verification of test results is done by reheating and retesting the identical sample that is suspect. The District Laboratories are required to submit penetration and absolute viscosity correlation samples to the Central Laboratory. These samples are the identical ones tested by the District Laboratories. When the Central laboratory tests these correlation samples they are also considered to be reheated and retested. Reheating a sample will harden the asphalt to some degree and possibly cause a change in the test results. This investigation was conducted to determine how much change in penetration and absolute viscosity could be expected by reheating and retesting asphalt samples.

Early stiffening of cement has been noted as contributing to workability problems with concrete placed in the field. Early stiffening, normally attributed to cements whose gypsum is reduced to hemi⋅hydrate or anhydrate because of high finish mill temperatures, is referred to as false setting. Stiffening attributed to uncontrolled reaction of C3A is referred to as flash set. False setting may be overcame by extended mix period, while flash setting is usually more serious and workability is usually diminished with extended mixing. ASTM C 359 has been used to detect early stiffening with mixed results. The mini slump cone test was developed by Construction Technology Laboratories (CTL), Inc., as an alternative method of determining early stiffening. This research examined the mini slump cone test procedure to determine the repeatability of the results obtained from two different testing procedures, effect of w/c ratio, lifting rate of the cone, and accuracy of the test using a standard sample.

As streets age, officials must deal with rehabilitating and reconstructing these pavements to maintain a safe and comfortable ride. In light of nationwide budget shortfalls, cost-effective methods of extending pavement service life must be developed or the overall condition of street systems will continue to fall. Thin maintenance surfaces (TMSs) are a set of cost-effective preventive maintenance surfacing techniques that can be used to extend the life of bituminous pavement—pavement built with hot mix asphalt, hot mix asphalt overlays of portland cement concrete pavements, built-up seal coat (chip seal), stabilized materials, or a combination of these. While previous phases of TMS research have provided information about the uses of thin maintenance surfaces in rural settings, urban areas have different road maintenance challenges that should be considered separately. This research provides city street officials with suggestions for TMS techniques that street departments can easily test and include into their current programs. This research project facilitated the construction of TMS test sections in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, and West Des Moines (all urban settings in Iowa). Test section sites and surfaces were selected to suit the needs of municipalities and were applied to roads with an array of various distresses and maintenance needs. Condition surveys of each test section were performed before construction, after construction, and after the first winter to record the amount and severity of existing distress and calculate the pavement condition index. Because conditions of the test sections varied greatly, determining which surface was most successful by comparing case studies was not feasible. However, some general conclusions can be made from this research. TMSs are suitable preventive maintenance techniques for a municipal street department’s program for preserving existing pavements. Careful attention should be paid to proper planning, quality control during construction, aggregate and binder selection, and aggregate embedment in order to support successful TMS application.

Currently, no standard mix design procedure is available for CIR-emulsion in Iowa. The CIR-foam mix design process developed during the previous phase is applied for CIR-emulsion mixtures with varying emulsified asphalt contents. Dynamic modulus test, dynamic creep test, static creep test and raveling test were conducted to evaluate the short- and long-term performance of CIR-emulsion mixtures at various testing temperatures and loading conditions. A potential benefit of this research is a better understanding of CIR-emulsion material properties in comparison with those of CIR-foam material that would allow for the selection of the most appropriate CIR technology and the type and amount of the optimum stabilization material. Dynamic modulus, flow number and flow time of CIR-emulsion mixtures using CSS- 1h were generally higher than those of HFMS-2p. Flow number and flow time of CIR-emulsion using RAP materials from Story County was higher than those from Clayton County. Flow number and flow time of CIR-emulsion with 0.5% emulsified asphalt was higher than CIR-emulsion with 1.0% or 1.5%. Raveling loss of CIR-emulsion with 1.5% emulsified was significantly less than those with 0.5% and 1.0%. Test results in terms of dynamic modulus, flow number, flow time and raveling loss of CIR-foam mixtures are generally better than those of CIR-emulsion mixtures. Given the limited RAP sources used for this study, it is recommended that the CIR-emulsion mix design procedure should be validated against several RAP sources and emulsion types.

Cold In-Place Recycling (CIR) has been used widely in rehabilitating the rural highways because it improves a long-term pavement performance. A CIR layer is normally covered by a hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay in order to protect it from water ingress and traffic abrasion and obtain the required pavement structure and texture. Curing is the term currently used for the period of time that a CIR layer should remain exposed to drying conditions before an HMA overlay is placed. The industry standard for curing time is 10 days to 14 days or a maximum moisture content of 1.5 percent, which appear to be very conservative. When the exposed CIR layer is required to carry traffic for many weeks before the wearing surface is placed, it increases the risk of a premature failure in both CIR layer and overlay. This study was performed to explore technically sound ways to identify minimum in-place CIR properties necessary to permit placement of the HMA overlay. To represent the curing process of CIR pavement in the field construction, three different laboratory curing procedures were examined: 1) uncovered, 2) semi-covered and 3) covered specimens. The indirect tensile strength of specimens in all three curing conditions did not increase during an early stage of curing but increased during a later stage of curing usually when the moisture content falls below 1.5%. Dynamic modulus and flow number increased as curing time increased and moisture contents decreased. For the same curing time, CIR-foam specimens exhibited the higher tensile strength and less moisture content than CIR-emulsion. The laboratory test results concluded that the method of curing temperature and length of the curing period significantly affect the properties of the CIR mixtures. The moisture loss index was developed to predict the moisture condition in the field and, in the future, this index be calibrated with the measurements of temperature and moisture of a CIR layer in the field.
