En los últimos años del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XEK la vigencia del pensamiento éclairé fomenta un clima favorable a la supresión del Santo Oficio; la censura del Santo Tribunal es el eje central de Cornelia Bororquia o la vÃctima de la Inquisición (1801), novela del ex-trinitario Luis Gutiérrez que narra la indefensión de una muchacha en las cárceles de la Inquisición. La novela argumenta en favor de la tolerancia religiosa y en la lÃnea de un cristianismo ilustrado, pero no alcanza el tono radical de otros españoles expatriados. Mientras que el exilio de José Marchena radicaliza su discurso polÃtico y su sueño de una sociedad sin clases, la vÃa de Luis Gutiérrez es más reformadora y posibilista, pues confÃa en que los vástagos de la nobleza más culta y enciclopédica sean una pieza clave en la modernización del pensamiento en España.

La carrera de Décimo Magno Ausonio constituye uno de los ejemplos paradigmáticos de una excepcional movilidad ascendente en el Bajo Imperio Romano, por lo que ha recibido considerable atención. El objetivo del presente trabajo es ofrecer una reevaluación de la evidencia y de las principales interpretaciones ofrecidas en la historiografÃa, centrando la atención en el papel de la cultura literaria en el éxito de Ausonio. Este análisis revela que la educación puede servir como un factor clave en el ascenso social, pero sólo si otros factores intervienen, especialmente el establecimiento de conexiones familiares con miembros de la elite

Filón de AlejandrÃa (30?a. C.-50? d. C.) es una figura clave para conocer la profunda relación entre JudaÃsmo y Helenismo en el siglo I d. C. JudÃo practicante, su profundo dominio de la lengua, la literatura y, de modo especial, la retórica griegas lo convierten en una personalidad extraordinaria de su tiempo, tanto por su exégesis de la Torá (o Pentateuco) como por sus escritos apologéticos, históricos y filosóficos. Su testimonio es de gran valor para todo estudioso de la Antigüedad clásica por los muchos datos que aporta acerca de la filosofÃa, el pensamiento, la educación y la tradición clásica en el momento histórico que le tocó vivir, precisamente en un centro cultural de excepcional importancia dentro del Imperio romano

The hydraulic effect of asymmetric compound bedforms on tidal currents was assessed from field measurements of flow velocity in the Knudedyb tidal inlet, Denmark. Large asymmetric bedforms with smaller superimposed ones are a common feature of sandy shallow water environments and are known to act as hydraulic roughness elements in dependence with flow direction. The presence of a flow separation zone on the bedform lee was estimated through analysis of the measured velocity directions and the calculation of the flow separation line. The Law of the Wall was used to calculate roughness lengths and shear velocities from log-linear segments sought on transect-averaged and single-location velocity profiles. During the ebb tide a permanent flow separation zone was established over the steep (10-20°) lee sides of the ebb-oriented primary bedforms, which generated a consequent drag on the flow. During the flood, no flow separation was induced by the gentle (2°) lee side of the primary bedforms except over the steepest (10°) part of the lee side where a small separation zone was sometimes observed. As a result, hydraulic roughness was only due to the superimposed bedforms. The parameterized flow separation line was found to underestimate the length of the flow separation zone of the primary bedforms. A better estimation of the presence and shape of the flow separation zone over complex bedforms in a tidal environment still needs to be determined; in particular the relationship between flow separation zone and bedform geometry (asymmetry, relative height or slope of the lee side) is unclear. This would improve the prediction of complex bedform roughness in tidal flows.

A finite element model was used to simulate timberbeams with defects and predict their maximum load in bending. Taking into account the elastoplastic constitutive law of timber, the prediction of fracture load gives information about the mechanisms of timber failure, particularly with regard to the influence of knots, and their local graindeviation, on the fracture. A finite element model was constructed using the ANSYS element Plane42 in a plane stress 2D-analysis, which equates thickness to the width of the section to create a mesh which is as uniform as possible. Three sub-models reproduced the bending test according to UNE EN 408: i) timber with holes caused by knots; ii) timber with adherent knots which have structural continuity with the rest of the beam material; iii) timber with knots but with only partial contact between knot and beam which was artificially simulated by means of contact springs between the two materials. The model was validated using ten 45 × 145 × 3000 mm beams of Pinus sylvestris L. which presented knots and graindeviation. The fracture stress data obtained was compared with the results of numerical simulations, resulting in an adjustment error less of than 9.7%

In order to establish an active internal know-how -reserve~ in an information processing and engineering services . company, a training architecture tailored to the company as an whole must be defined. When a company' s earnings come from . advisory services dynamically structured i.n the form of projects, as is the case at hand, difficulties arise that must be taken into account in the architectural design. The first difficulties are of a psychological nature and the design method proposed here begjns wi th the definition of the highest training metasystem, which is aimed at making adjustments for the variety of perceptions of the company's human components, before the architecture can be designed. This approach may be considered as an application of the cybernetic Law of Requisita Variety (Ashby) and of the Principle of Conceptual Integrity (Brooks) . Also included is a description of sorne of the results of the first steps of metasystems at the level of company organization.

The outstanding problem for useful applications of electrodynamic tethers is obtaining sufficient electron current from the ionospheric plasma. Bare tether collectors, in which the conducting tether itself, left uninsulated over kilometers of its length, acts as the collecting anode, promise to attain currents of 10 A or more from reasonably sized systems. Current collection by a bare tether is also relatively insensitive to drops in electron density, which are regularly encountered on each revolution of an orbit. This makes nighttime operation feasible. We show how the bare tether's high efficiency of current collection and ability to adjust to density variations follow from the orbital motion limited collection law of thin cylinders. We consider both upwardly deployed (power generation mode) and downwardly deployed (reboost mode) tethers, and present results that indicate how bare tether systems would perform as their magnetic and plasma environment varies in low earth orbit.

Electrodynamic tethered systems, in which an exposed portion of the conducting tether itself collects electrons from the ionosphere, promise to attain currents of 10 A or more in low Earth orbit. For the first time, another desirable feature of such bare-tether systems is reported and analyzed in detail: Collection by a bare tether is relatively insensitive to variations in electron density that are regularly encountered on each revolution of an orbit. This self-adjusting property of bare-tether systems occurs because the electron-collecting area on the tether is not fixed, but extends along its positively biased portion, and because the current varies as collecting length to a power greater than unity. How this adjustment to density variations follows from the basic collection law of thin cylinders is shown. The effect of variations in the motionally induced tether voltage is also analyzed. Both power and thruster modes are considered. The performance of bare-tether systems to tethered systems is compared using passive spherical collectors of fixed area, taking into consideration recent experimental results. Calculations taking into account motional voltage and plasma density around a realistic orbit for bare-tether systems suitable for space station applications are also presented.
