In this paper, we present a new course entitled “Biomimicry: from life to nanotechnological innovations” at the Mines Nancy Engineering School, Nancy, France, and explain how we developed a specific curriculum covering biomimicry. We discuss strategies that can be followed by teachers to explain selected contents in the multi-disciplinary field of biomimicry and/or bioinspiration to undergraduate students and how practical classroom activities can be conducted as individual or team work. We hope that sharing our experience will help teachers and senior researchers disseminate useful concepts and real examples of biomimetic principles and tools for the development of new materials, new/improved design and fabrication strategies, and innovation methodologies.

This chapter presents a general view of multibody system concept and definition by describing the main features associated with spatial systems. The mechanical components, which can be modeled as rigid or flexible, are constrained by kinematic pair of different types. Additionally, the bodies can be actuated upon by force elements and external forces due to interaction with environment. This chapter also presents some examples of application of multibody systems that can include automotive vehicles, mechanisms, robots and biomechanical systems.

In this chapter, the fundamental ingredients related to formulation of the equations of motion for multibody systems are described. In particular, aspects such as degrees of freedom, types of coordinates, basic kinematics joints and types of analysis in multibody systems are briefly characterized. Illustrative examples of application are also presented to better clarify the fundamental issues for spatial rigid multibody systems, which are of crucial importance in the formulation development of mathematical models of mechanical systems, as well as its computational implementation.

[Excerpt] Anaerobic microbial diversity encloses a very high potential that can be used for biotechnological applications. This potential is still largely unexplored, since the majority of the microorganisms in Nature are unknown or poorly characterized. This work is focused on the study of novel anaerobic microorganisms that participate in the metabolism of lipids, long chain fatty acids (LCFA) and glycerol, with the main goal of producing valuable energy-rich organic compounds. For that, conventional anaerobic culturing procedures were combined with continuous bioreactors operation and allied to microbial ecology approaches. Two main examples of the work performed will be presented. (...)

The development of products from marine bioresources is gaining importance in the biotechnology sector. The global market for Marine Biotechnology products and processes was, in 2010, estimated at 2.8 billion with a cumulative annual growth rate of 510% (Børresen et al., Marine biotechnology: a new vision and strategy for Europe. Marine Board Position Paper 15. Beernem: Marine Board-ESF, 2010). Marine Biotechnology has the potential to make significant contributions towards the sustainable supply of food and energy, the solution of climate change and environmental degradation issues, and the human health. Besides the creation of jobs and wealth, it will contribute to the development of a greener economy. Thus, huge expectations anticipate the global development of marine biotechnology. The marine environment represents more than 70% of the Earths surface and includes the largest ranges of temperature, light and pressure encountered by life. These diverse marine environments still remain largely unexplored, in comparison with terrestrial habitats. Notwithstanding, efforts are being done by the scientific community to widespread the knowledge on oceans microbial life. For example, the J. Craig Venter Institute, in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Scripps Institution of Oceanography have built a state-of-the-art computational resource along with software tools to catalogue and interpret microbial life in the worlds oceans. The potential application of the marine biotechnology in the bioenergy sector is wide and, certainly, will evolve far beyond the current interest in marine algae. This chapter revises the current knowledge on marine anaerobic bacteria and archaea with a role in bio-hydrogen production, syngas fermentation and bio-electrochemical processes, three examples of bioenergy production routes.

The safety coordination during the design phase still remains a challenge at several levels, especially when dealing with refurbishment projects. Either by lack of knowledge of the existing construction (for intervention), and its surroundings, or by the protection of the cultural and historical patrimonial values, or even, by the well known difficulty that the safety coordinator has, in his intervention in any project. The incorporation of the general principles of prevention, the difficulty of the coordinator to be heard by all the actors, to anticipate all risks associated in the construction and the prevision of the respective preventive measures, those are some examples of the obstacles that the design safety coordinator will face. This article intends to give some good practices of safety coordination acts, list all that it encompasses, and emphasizing its importance.
