The organic matter contents of sediments and rocks sampled during DSDP Leg 93 have been characterized by CHN and Rock-Eval analyses. Most samples from Sites 604 and 605 on the New Jersey continental slope and from Site 603 on the Hatteras outer continental rise contained less than 0.5% organic carbon. Some Neogene samples from the slope contained 1 to 2% organic carbon, and Cretaceous samples from the outer rise were as rich as 13.6% organic carbon by weight. Thin layers of black claystones of Santonian, Cenomanian, and Albian age were found interbedded in organiccarbon- lean, bioturbated, turbiditic claystones. Similar layers of turbiditic black marlstones were interspersed among Neocomian limestones and sandstones. Although the organic matter in many of the samples appeared to be detrital continental material, according to Rock-Eval and C/N values, Cenomanian black shales, in particular, contained substantial proportions of marine-derived organic matter.

Laboratory measurements of the acoustic and physical properties of deep-sea sediments and rocks are important for the interpretation of seismic reflection and refraction data and estimation of in situ physical property values. Furthermore, the results of such measurements can be used to design geoacoustic models of the upper oceanic crust that can relate the physical properties of deep-sea sediments to lithology, depth of burial, and diagenetic effects (Hamilton, 1980; Milholland et al., 1980). The purpose of this paper is to report the results of laboratory measurements of wet-bulk density, compressionalwave velocity, and velocity anisotropy on sediments cored during DSDP Leg 79. The sample suite consists of 11 calcareous claystones and clay-rich chalks recovered between 370 to 720 m sub-bottom at Holes 545 and 547A.

On Vermilion Sea Expedition two research vessels among which the R/V Spencer F. Baird conducted a geological and geophysical exploration of the Gulf of California from February to May, 1959. Support was obtained from the Office of Naval Research and the Bureau of Ships of the U. S. Navy and from a grant of the American Petroleum Institute. Study of the canyons was one feature of the first part of the expedition. Submarine canyon studies were directed by Francis P. Shepard, Professor of Submarine Geology, aboard the research vessel Spencer F. Baird. The expedition found that the narrow channel between Angel de la Guarda Island, toward the head of the Gulf, and the peninsula is scoured almost free of sediments by strong currents. On the other side of Angel de la Guarda Island, between it and the mainland, one of the dredge hauls brought up a manganese nodule. It came from a depth of approximately 1500 feet. This is the shallowest water in which the nodules have been found. Studies have been under way some time on the feasibility of mining such nodules from the sea floor. They contain cobalt, nickel, copper and other valuable metals. Leg 90 recovered approximately 3705 m of core at eight sites lying at middle bathyal depths (1000-2200 m) (Sites 587 to 594) in a traverse from subtropical to subantarctic latitudes in the southwest Pacific region, chiefly on Lord Howe Rise in the Tasman Sea. This chapter summarizes some preliminary lithostratigraphic results of the leg and includes data from Site 586, drilled during DSDP Leg 89 on the Ontong-Java Plateau that forms the northern equatorial point of the latitudinal traverse. The lithofacies consist almost exclusively of continuous sections of very pure (>95% CaCO3) pelagic calcareous sediment, typically foraminifer-bearing nannofossil ooze (or chalk) and nannofossil ooze (or chalk), which is mainly of Neogene age but extends back into the Eocene at Sites 588, 592, and 593. Only at Site 594 off southeastern New Zealand is there local development of hemipelagic sediments and several late Neogene unconformities. Increased contents of foraminifers in Leg 90 sediments, notably in the Quaternary interval, correspond to periods of enhanced winnowing by bottom currents. Significant changes in the rates of sediment accumulation and in the character and intensity of sediment bioturbation within and between sites probably reflect changes in calcareous biogenic productivity as a result of fundamental paleoceanographic events in the region during the Neogene. Burial lithification is expressed by a decrease in sediment porosity from about 70 to 45% with depth. Concomitantly, microfossil preservation slowly deteriorates as a result of selective dissolution or recrystallization of some skeletons and the progressive appearance of secondary calcite overgrowths, first about discoasters and sphenoliths, and ultimately on portions of coccoliths. The ooze/chalk transition occurs at about 270 m sub-bottom depth at each of the northern sites (Sites 586 to 592) but is delayed until about twice this depth at the two southern sites (Sites 593 and 594). A possible explanation for this difference between geographic areas is the paucity of discoasters and sphenoliths at the southern sites; these nannofossil elements provide ideal nucleation sites for calcite overgrowths. Toward the bottom of some holes, dissolution seams and flasers appear in recrystallized chalks. The very minor terrigenous fraction of the sediment consists of silt- through clay-sized quartz, feldspar, mica, and clay minerals (smectite, illite, kaolinite, and chlorite), supplied as eolian dust from the Australian continent and by wind and ocean currents from erosion on South Island, New Zealand. Changes in the mass accumulation rates of terrigenous sediment and in clay mineral assemblages through time are related to various external controls, such as the continued northward drift of the Indo-Australian Plate, the development of Antarctic ice sheets, the increased desertification of the Australian continent after 14 m.y. ago, and the progressive increase in tectonic relief of New Zealand through the late Cenozoic. Disseminated glass shards and (altered) tephra layers occur in Leg 90 cores. They were derived from major silicic eruptions in North Island, New Zealand, and from basic to intermediate explosive volcanism along the Melanesian island chains. The tephrostratigraphic record suggests episodes of increased volcanicity in the southwest Pacific centered near 17, 13, 10, 5 and 1 m.y. ago, especially in the middle and early late Miocene. In addition, submarine basaltic volcanism was widespread in the southeast Tasman Sea around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, possibly related to the propagation of the Southeast Indian Ridge through western New Zealand as a continental rift system.

Concentrations of organic and inorganic nitrogen have been measured on Leg 80 sediments. The inorganic nitrogen content is relatively constant, 0.02-0.03 wt.%. Because most of the inorganic nitrogen occurs as NH3 or (NH4)+ fixed on clays, clay-poor sediments have lower inorganic nitrogen contents. Organic nitrogen content depends upon both the type and the quantity of organic matter present. In Leg 80 sediments, woody kerogens contain much less organic nitrogen than do kerogens of algal origin. Furthermore, pelagic samples of low organic carbon content have less organic nitrogen than predicted, because of loss during diagenesis. DSDP shipboard analytical procedures do not distinguish between organic and inorganic nitrogen. Great caution must therefore be exercised in interpreting C/N ratios.

Conventional K-Ar ages have been determined and inert-gas abundances have been measured on representative samples of altered rocks from Deep Sea Drilling Project Holes 501, 504B, and 505B in an attempt to correlate their degree of alteration with inert-gas and K-Ar data. Samples taken from the first 60 meters below the sediment/basalt interface give significantly higher ages than would be expected from the magnetic stratigraphy, though at greater depths the calculated ages are in broad agreement with the expected age. The inert gas ratios 20Ne/36Ar, 36Ar/84Kr, and 84Kr/130Xe also show a marked discontinuity at the 60-meter depth, and all these effects are interpreted as being a consequence of low-temperature alteration produced by burial metamorphism and by interaction with sea water (halmyrolysis).

Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM) was measured for regularly spaced samples from the 620-m-thick, lower middle Eocene to upper Maestrichtian section of DSDP Site 605. The total NRM of the Eocene chalks was too low (5-50 µA/m) to establish a reliable magnetic polarity stratigraphy. However, the results from the somewhat more clayrich Paleocene-upper Maestrichtian section are useful. A fourfold quality classification of the results of progressive demagnetization studies aided in determining the polarity of the original remanence. Two types (1 and 2a) showed a Characteristic Remanent Magnetization (ChRM) direction with reversed and normal polarity, respectively; the third type (2b) can be interpreted as having a reversed ChRM, which could not be cleaned, whereas the fourth type (3) is considered to be unreliable. The Site 605 magnetic polarity stratigraphy compares well with published sections, adding important detail to the correlation with planktonic microfossil zones and, hence, to the resolution of this portion of the time scale (C24-C32 on the Berggren et al., 1985, scale). The Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary occurs in a reversed polarity zone that has been correlated with Subchron C29r. We suspect the presence of an unconformity at the boundary between lithostratigraphic Units Va and IV a location which is also the level of Reflection Horizon A*.

We have measured the 3He/4He and 20Ne/4He ratios of gases dissolved in the pore water in sediments at two sites in the Nankai Trough (Site 583) and the Japan Trench (Site 584). The 3He/4He and 20Ne/4He ratios vary from 0.215 * 10**-6 to 1.23 * 10**-6 and from 50 * 10**-3 to 2700 * 10**-3, respectively. These values can be explained by mixing two components, one from the atmosphere and one with a 3He/4He ratio of (0.2 to 0.3) * 10**-6. The latter component may be derived from the ocean crust near the subduction zone.

Size analyses were performed on pelagic sediments from Core 599-3, which exhibited paleontologic and lithologic evidence of reworking. The results show that darker, transported layers above sharp contacts are 0.33 phi coarser than the underlying lighter, in situ layers. The reworking is of unknown origin, but it coincides with periods of enhanced bottom currents and heightened tectonic activity during the latest Miocene.
