Variations of acoustic properties within the sediment column may significantly affect the propagation of acoustic energy in the upper portion of the oceanic crust. Moreover, the acoustic properties of sediments reflect their mineral compositions, fabrics, and degrees of compaction and cementation. Hence, the physical properties of indurated deep-sea sediments are of considerable geophysical and geological interest. Chalks and limestones are particularly important because substantial accumulations of biogenic carbonates are generally present at the base of the deep-sea sediment column, and high-standing features such as Hess Rise are capped by calcareous deposits. This paper constitutes a preliminary report of the compressional-wave velocities and densities of 31 indurated calcareous sediment samples recovered at DSDP Sites 463 and 465, in the Mid-Pacific Mountains and on Hess Rise, respectively. The sample set includes nine pairs of samples in which velocities were measured parallel and perpendicular to bedding to determine the velocity anisotropy of the sediment. This research is part of an ongoing study of the seismic properties of indurated deep-sea carbonates.

Visual kerogen and total organic carbon determinations indicate that there are two periods of organic enrichment events in the Mesozoic sediments of the South Atlantic. The first period, from the Late Jurassic through the late Aptian, is recorded in sediments from the Falkland Plateau, the Cape Basin, and the Angola Basin. Apparently, salinity stratification in the restricted basin, coupled with rising sea level, led to bottom water anoxia and organic enrichment. The second event, from the late Albian to the Santonian period, is recorded in sediments from the Angola Basin and the Sao Paulo Plateau. It appears to have been caused by development of an anoxic oxygen minimum zone at midwater depths. Organic matter sedimentation in the Mesozoic South Atlantic is controlled by geologic, climatic, eustatic, and Oceanographic factors.

Organic geochemical and organic petrographic methods were used to study three Lower to middle Cretaceous sediment samples from Hole 535 in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico for organic matter contents and origin and level of maturation. All three samples contain mixed kerogen Type II/III organic matter with a maturity corresponding to about 0.4% vitrinite reflectance. The marine component increases with stratigraphic age, and microbial reworking of the organic matter is significant in each age. The lower two samples of Hauterivian to Valanginian age appear to be impregnated (or contaminated) with soluble polar organic compounds, but there is only a weak indication for the presence of more mature, nonindigenous hydrocarbons.

A preliminary palynological survey of 118 samples from the Mississippi Fan (Sites 615, 616, and 620) and from 2 intraslope basins (Sites 619 and 618) shows pollen in all samples. Reworked pollen is generally abundant, forming over 50% of the sum of pollen and reworked pollen. Concentration of nonreworked pollen is usually low (on the order of tens to hundreds of pollen grains per cubic centimeter wet sediment). Conifers, primarily Pinus, Picea, and Tsuga, dominate Pleistocene marine pollen spectra; significant percentages of Quercus are present in Holocene sediments and in sediments deposited during oxygen-isotope Stage 5.

Sediment samples taken at close intervals across four major unconformities (middle Miocene/upper Miocene, lower Oligocene/upper Oligocene, lower Eocene/upper Eocene, lower Paleocene/upper Paleocene) at DSDP-IPOD Site 548, Goban Spur, reveal that coeval biostratigraphic gaps, sediment discontinuities, and seismic unconformities coincide with postulated low stands of sea level. Foraminiferal, lithic, and isotopic analyses demonstrate that environments began to shift prior to periods of marine erosion, and that sedimentation resumed in the form of turbidites derived from nearby upper-slope sources. The unconformities appear to have developed where a water-mass boundary intersected the continental slope, rhythmically crossing the drill site in concert with sea-level rise and fall.

This study investigates abundance variations in Noelaerhabdaceae assemblages during the late Oligocene-early Miocene at three subtropical sites in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans (DSDP Sites 516, 608 and 588). At these three sites, nannofossil assemblages were characterized by the successive high proportion of Cyclicargolithus, Dictyococcites and Reticulofenestra. Local paleoceanographic changes, such as the input of nutrient-poor water masses, might explain shifts in ecological prominence within the Noelaerhabdaceae at DSDP Site 516 (South Atlantic). But the similar timing of a decline in Cyclicargolithus at the three studied sites more likely corresponds to a global process. Here, we explore possible causes for this long-term taxonomic turnover. A global change in climate, associated with early Miocene glaciations, could have triggered a decline in fitness of the taxon Cyclicargolithus. The ecological niche made vacant because of the decrease in Cyclicargolithus could then have been exploited by Dictyococcites and Reticulofenestra that became prominent in the assemblages after 20.5 Ma. Alternatively, this global turnover might reflect a gradual evolutionary succession and be the result of other selection pressures, such as increased competition between Cyclicargolithus and Dictyococcites/Reticulofenestra. A diversification within Dictyococcites/Reticulofenestra, indicated by an expansion in the size variation within this group since ~ 20.5 Ma, may have contributed to the decreased fitness of Cyclicargolithus.

Six deep sea cores from the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) were analyzed for planktonic foraminifera and stable isotopes in order to reconstruct sea surface temperatures (SST) for the last 40 ka. South of the Equatorial Front the abundance of Globorotalia inflata increased, and SST decreased by >5°C (core ODP846B), creating a stronger SST meridional gradient and advection of the Peru Current than present for the ~16-35 ka interval. A sharper SST meridional gradient forced stronger Choco jet events and a moisture increase in western Colombia, which supplied, through the San Juan River and the south-flowing equatorial and the Peru-Chile countercurrents, abundant hemipelagic quartz over the northern Peru basin (core TR163-31B). The Choco jet, and its associated mesoscale convective cells, provoked an increase in snow precipitation over the Central Cordillera of Colombia and the advance of the Murillo glacier. In synchrony with the intensified Choco jet events, the "dry island" effect over the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia intensified, and the level of Fuquene Lake dropped.

The taxonomy and stratigraphy of pelagic Paleocene diatoms from ODP Sites 698, 700, and 702 and DSDP Site 524 in the South Atlantic and DSDP Site 214 in the Indian Ocean are presented, as well as paleogeographic and paleoecologic implications. Eleven new species and one new variety are described and one new combination is proposed: Coscinodiscus cruxii sp. nov. Grunowiella palaeocaenica var. alternans var. nov. Hemiaulusl beatus sp. nov. Hemiaulusl ciesielskii sp. nov. Hemiaulusl conicus sp. nov. Hemiaulus kristoffersenii sp. nov. Hemiaulus nocchiae sp. nov. Hemiaulusl oonkii sp. nov. Hemiaulusl velatus sp. nov. Triceratium gombosii sp. nov. Trochosira gracillima comb. nov. Trochosira marginata sp. nov. Trochosira radiata sp. nov. Hole 700B provides one of the most continuous diatomaceous Paleocene profiles known. Stratigraphic ranges of diatom species from this and other Southern Hemisphere sites are calibrated against calcareous microfossil zones. The first-appearance datums of Triceratium gombosii, Hemiaulus incurvus, and Triceratium mirabile in Paleocene deep-sea sediments are useful for regional stratigraphic correlations. Quantitative analysis of the biosiliceous microfossil groups (diatoms, silicoflagellates, radiolarians, and archaeomonadaceae) shows that preservation of diatoms is confined primarily to the upper Paleocene (planktonic foraminifer Zones P3 and P4 and calcareous nannofossil Zones upper NP5 to lower NP9). In the lower Paleocene only short intervals in Hole 700B are diatomaceous. A correlation between the degree of silica diagenesis and the calcium carbonate content of the sediment is not obvious. Diatom species analysis reflects changes in the paleoenvironment between island-related upwelling conditions with highly diverse and well-preserved diatom assemblages and less productive periods resulting in less wellpreserved diatom assemblages with a higher content of robust neritic diatoms.
