Biosolids were used to remove zinc, manganese and cyanide from mining wastewaters. The effect of aqueous parameters and reaction variables on contaminant biosorption was quantified. The mechanism of removal was adsorption onto amine and carboxyl functional groups. Immobilisation was investigated to overcome problems of swelling and disintegration of the biosolids.

We report that ammonium oleate surfactants can help the dispersion of multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in water to form a BNNT solution stable for several months, which was due to the non-covalent functionalization of nanotube surfaces. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Photoluminescence (PL) analysis with synchrotron radiation source revealed that this BNNT aqueous solution preserves the intrinsic optical properties of BNNTs. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Chemical reactions between certain bis-cyclometalated iridium complexes, cerium(IV) and organic reducing agents in aqueous solution produce an emission of light which in some cases is more intense than that from analogous reactions with conventional ruthenium-based reagents, thus providing a new avenue for chemically-initiated luminescence detection.

Polyaniline (PANI) nanofibres are synthesized by interfacial polymerization and their electrochemical performance is evaluated in an aqueous redox supercapacitor constituted as a two-electrode cell. The initial specific capacitance of the cell is 554 F g−1 at a constant current of 1.0 A g−1, but this value rapidly decreases on continuous cycling. In order to improve the cycleability of the supercapacitor, a composite of polyaniline with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is synthesized by in situ chemical polymerization. Its capacitive behaviour is evaluated in a similar cell configuration. A high initial specific capacitance of 606 F g−1 is obtained with good retention on cycling. In both supercapacitors, the effect of charging potential on cycling performances is investigated.

A stable magnesium battery has been developed based on a magnesium anode, a poly(dioxyethane thiophene) (PEDOT) cathode and a near-saturated aqueous solution of LiCl, MgCl2, or mixture of these salts at pH of 11. This combination leads to a low water activity in the electrolyte, which thus suppresses the hydrogen evolution reaction on Mg, as well as producing a stable oxy-hydroxide film which protects the metal surface from freely corroding. The conducting polymer cathode is reduced somewhat during the discharge process, however, appears to be readily re-oxidised (as determined from the resistance) by the oxygen present in the cell. The cell is therefore primarily a Mg/O2 battery, however, the PEDOT appears to enhance the performance, in particular the discharge voltage.

This study provided initial evidence that extract derived from the cartilage of two commercially available Australian shark species, may potentially, be effective in the inhibition of tumour growth, whilst also showing that the species and maturity level, but not the gender of the shark, influenced the amount of extract obtained.

The Co2+ sorption of two wool powders was investigated using its radioisotope 57Co (T1/2=271.8 days and γ=122.1 and 136.5 keV) as a tracer. The effects of the type of buffer, the pH value, the contact time and the initial concentration of Co2+ on the sorption behaviour of wool powders were studied. The Co2+ releasing ability of wool powders and the re-use of wool powders to sorb Co2+ were also examined. The optimum sorption of Co2+ by the powders occurred at pH 8 in phosphate buffer and pH 10 in ammonium sulphate buffer. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to study the changes in chemical structure of the wool after exposure to both buffer solutions. Compared to the untreated wool fibre, the fine wool powders showed rapid sorption rates and high sorption capacities for Co2+. Co2+ ions were recovered after exposing the Co2+ loaded wool to HCl (0.1 M) and buffer at pH 3 (glycine/sodium chloride). After releasing Co2+ ions from wool powders, the efficiency of wool powders re-used to sorb Co2+ was 80% of that of the fresh wool powders. It is concluded from this study that wool powder can be used as an efficient sorbent to remove and release Co2+ from solution.

In this paper, a new technique has been developed to enable fibre diameters to be measured in an aqueous environment using the OFDA 2000 instrument. The existing OFDA instrument has only been used to measure diameters of animal fibres under dry conditions. This new technique was utilised to assess the effects of pH and temperature on the diameters of merino wool fibres in aqueous environments. Significant changes in fibre diameter under aqueous conditions were found as a function of pH and temperature. Wool fibre diameters were at a minimum close to the wool isoelectric point (pH 4.8) and increased at both lower and higher pHs. Swelling of merino wool fibres was observed to increase linearly by around 15% as the temperature rose from ambient to 70°C.

Silk fibroin films are promising materials for a range of biomedical applications. To understand the effects of casting solvents on film properties, we used water (W), formic acid (FA), and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as solvents. We characterized molecular weight, secondary structure, mechanical properties, and degradation behavior of cast films. Significant degradation of fibroin was observed for TFA-based film compared to W and TA-based films when analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Fibroin degradation resulted in a significant reduction in tensile strength and modulus of TFA-based films. Compared to water, TFA-based films demonstrated lower water solubility (19.6% vs. 62.5% in 12 h) despite having only a marginal increase in their ß-sheet content (26.9% vs. 23.7%). On the other hand, FA-based films with 34.3% ß-sheet were virtually water insoluble. Following solubility treatment, ß-sheet content in FA-based films increased to 50.9%. On exposure to protease XIV, water-annealed FA-based films lost 74% mass in 22 days compared to only 30% mass loss by ethanol annealed FA films. This study demonstrated that a small variation in the ß-sheet percentage and random coil conformations resulted in a significant change in the rates of enzymatic degradation without alteration to their tensile properties. The film surface roughness changed with the extent of enzymatic hydrolysis.
