Aggregate masonry buildings have been generated over the years, allowing the interaction of different aggregated structural units under seismic action. The first part of this work is focused on the seismic vulnerability and fragility assessment of clay brick masonry buildings, sited in Bologna (Italy), with reference, at first, to single isolated structural units, by means of the Response Surface statistical method, taking into account some variabilities and uncertainties involved in the problem. The seismic action was defined by means of a group of selected registered accelerograms, in order to analyse the effect of the variability of the earthquakes. Identical and different structural units chosen by the Response Surface generated simulations are then aggregated in row, in order to compare the collapse PGA referred to the isolated structural unit and the one referred to the aggregate structure. The second part is focused on the seismic vulnerability and fragility assessment of stone masonry structures, sited in Seixal (Portugal), applying a methodology similar to that used for the buildings sited in Bologna. Since the availability of several information, the analyses involved the assessment of the most prevalent structural typologies in the area, considering the variability of a set of structural and geometrical parameters. The results highlighted the importance of the statistic procedures as method able to consider the variabilities and the uncertainties involved in the problem of the fragility of unreinforced masonry structures, in absence of accurate investigations on the structural typologies, as in the Seixal case study. Furthermore, it was showed that the structural units along the unreinforced clay brick or stone masonry aggregates cannot be analysed as isolated, as they are affected by the effect of the aggregation with adjacent structural units, according to the different directions of the seismic action considered and to their different position along the row aggregate.

Since last century, the rising interest of value-added and advanced functional materials has spurred a ceaseless development in terms of industrial processes and applications. Among the emerging technologies, thanks to their unique features and versatility in terms of supported processes, non-equilibrium plasma discharges appear as a key solvent-free, high-throughput and cost-efficient technique. Nevertheless, applied research studies are needed with the aim of addressing plasma potentialities optimizing devices and processes for future industrial applications. In this framework, the aim of this dissertation is to report on the activities carried out and the results achieved concerning the development and optimization of plasma techniques for nanomaterial synthesis and processing to be applied in the biomedical field. In the first section, the design and investigation of a plasma assisted process for the production of silver (Ag) nanostructured multilayer coatings exhibiting anti-biofilm and anti-clot properties is described. With the aim on enabling in-situ and on-demand deposition of Ag nanoparticles (NPs), the optimization of a continuous in-flight aerosol process for particle synthesis is reported. The stability and promising biological performances of deposited coatings spurred further investigation through in-vitro and in-vivo tests which results are reported and discussed. With the aim of addressing the unanswered questions and tuning NPs functionalities, the second section concerns the study of silver containing droplet conversion in a flow-through plasma reactor. The presented results, obtained combining different analysis techniques, support a formation mechanism based on droplet to particle conversion driven by plasma induced precursor reduction. Finally, the third section deals with the development of a simulative and experimental approach used to investigate the in-situ droplet evaporation inside the plasma discharge addressing the main contributions to liquid evaporation in the perspective of process industrial scale up.

The present manuscript focuses on out of equilibrium physics in two dimensional models. It has the purpose of presenting some results obtained as part of out of equilibrium dynamics in its non perturbative aspects. This can be understood in two different ways: the former is related to integrability, which is non perturbative by nature; the latter is related to emergence of phenomena in the out of equilibirum dynamics of non integrable models that are not accessible by standard perturbative techniques. In the study of out of equilibirum dynamics, two different protocols are used througout this work: the bipartitioning protocol, within the Generalised Hydrodynamics (GHD) framework, and the quantum quench protocol. With GHD machinery we study the Staircase Model, highlighting how the hydrodynamic picture sheds new light into the physics of Integrable Quantum Field Theories; with quench protocols we analyse different setups where a non-perturbative description is needed and various dynamical phenomena emerge, such as the manifistation of a dynamical Gibbs effect, confinement and the emergence of Bloch oscillations preventing thermalisation.

The first chapter provides evidence that aggregate Research and Development (R&D) investment drives a persistent component in productivity growth and that this embodies a risk priced in financial markets. In a semi-endogenous growth model, this component is identified by the R&D in excess of equilibrium levels and can be approximated by the Error Correction Term in the cointegration between R&D and Total Factor Productivity. Empirically, the component results being well defined and it satisfies all key theoretical predictions: it exhibits appropriate persistency, it forecasts productivity growth, and it is associated with a cross-sectional risk premium. CAPM is the most foundational model in financial economics, but is known to empirically underestimate expected returns of low-risk assets and overestimate those with high risk. The second chapter studies how risks omission and funding tightness jointly contribute to explaining this anomaly, with the former affecting the definition of assets’ riskiness and the latter affecting how risk is remunerated. Theoretically, the two effects are shown to counteract each other. Empirically, the spread related to binding leverage constraints is found to be significant at 2% yearly. Nonetheless, average returns of portfolios that exploit this anomaly are found to mostly reflect omitted risks, in contrast to their employment in previous literature. The third chapter studies how ‘sustainability’ of assets affect discount rates, which is intrinsically mediated by the risk profile of the assets themselves. This has implications for the assessment of the sustainability-related spread and for hedging changes in the sustainability concern. This mechanism is tested on the ESG-score dimension for US data, with inconclusive evidence regarding the existence of an ESG-related premium in the first place. Also, the risk profile of the long-short ESG portfolio is not likely to impact the sign of its average returns with respect to the sustainability-spread, for the time being.

The waterproofing of hydraulic structure is done traiditionally like laying road on dam surface but with specific modified binders. An italian firm recently patented a new method that is re-adaptation of typical surface treatment of roads. The purpose of this study is to find out best aggregate-bitumen mixture that can perform well under service conditions of a large hydraulic structure such as dams. So, 4 different hard modified bitumen were tested with 2 aggregate types i.e. limestone and basalt. The experimental program contained the testing of bitumen aggregate adhesion, using the rolling bottle test and rheology of hard modified binders using multiple stress creep and recovery test and dynamic viscosity test. The results and discussion are presented in detail in this work.

Prosopis rubriflora and Prosopis ruscifolia are important species in the Chaquenian regions of Brazil. Because of the restriction and frequency of their physiognomy, they are excellent models for conservation genetics studies. The use of microsatellite markers (Simple Sequence Repeats, SSRs) has become increasingly important in recent years and has proven to be a powerful tool for both ecological and molecular studies. In this study, we present the development and characterization of 10 new markers for P. rubriflora and 13 new markers for P. ruscifolia. The genotyping was performed using 40 P. rubriflora samples and 48 P. ruscifolia samples from the Chaquenian remnants in Brazil. The polymorphism information content (PIC) of the P. rubriflora markers ranged from 0.073 to 0.791, and no null alleles or deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HW) were detected. The PIC values for the P. ruscifolia markers ranged from 0.289 to 0.883, but a departure from HW and null alleles were detected for certain loci; however, this departure may have resulted from anthropic activities, such as the presence of livestock, which is very common in the remnant areas. In this study, we describe novel SSR polymorphic markers that may be helpful in future genetic studies of P. rubriflora and P. ruscifolia.

Lipidic mixtures present a particular phase change profile highly affected by their unique crystalline structure. However, classical solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) thermodynamic modeling approaches, which assume the solid phase to be a pure component, sometimes fail in the correct description of the phase behavior. In addition, their inability increases with the complexity of the system. To overcome some of these problems, this study describes a new procedure to depict the SLE of fatty binary mixtures presenting solid solutions, namely the Crystal-T algorithm. Considering the non-ideality of both liquid and solid phases, this algorithm is aimed at the determination of the temperature in which the first and last crystal of the mixture melts. The evaluation is focused on experimental data measured and reported in this work for systems composed of triacylglycerols and fatty alcohols. The liquidus and solidus lines of the SLE phase diagrams were described by using excess Gibbs energy based equations, and the group contribution UNIFAC model for the calculation of the activity coefficients of both liquid and solid phases. Very low deviations of theoretical and experimental data evidenced the strength of the algorithm, contributing to the enlargement of the scope of the SLE modeling.

The present paper describes the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer - poly(methacrylic acid)/silica and reports its performance feasibility with desired adsorption capacity and selectivity for cholesterol extraction. Two imprinted hybrid materials were synthesized at different methacrylic acid (MAA)/tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) molar ratios (6:1 and 1:5) and characterized by FT-IR, TGA, SEM and textural data. Cholesterol adsorption on hybrid materials took place preferably in apolar solvent medium, especially in chloroform. From the kinetic data, the equilibrium time was reached quickly, being 12 and 20 min for the polymers synthesized at MAA/TEOS molar ratio of 6:1 and 1:5, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model provided the best fit for cholesterol adsorption on polymers, confirming the chemical nature of the adsorption process, while the dual-site Langmuir-Freundlich equation presented the best fit to the experimental data, suggesting the existence of two kinds of adsorption sites on both polymers. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained for the polymers synthesized at MAA/TEOS molar ratios of 6:1 and 1:5 were found to be 214.8 and 166.4 mg g(-1), respectively. The results from isotherm data also indicated higher adsorption capacity for both imprinted polymers regarding to corresponding non-imprinted polymers. Nevertheless, taking into account the retention parameters and selectivity of cholesterol in the presence of structurally analogue compounds (5-α-cholestane and 7-dehydrocholesterol), it was observed that the polymer synthesized at the MAA/TEOS molar ratio of 6:1 was much more selective for cholesterol than the one prepared at the ratio of 1:5, thus suggesting that selective binding sites ascribed to the carboxyl group from MAA play a central role in the imprinting effect created on MIP.
