Within the complex of deep, hypersaline anoxic lakes (DHALs) of the Mediterranean Ridge, we identified a new, unexplored DHAL and named it ‘Lake Kryos’ after a nearby depression. This lake is filled with magnesium chloride (MgCl2)-rich, athalassohaline brine (salinity > 470 practical salinity units), presumably formed by the dissolution of Messinian bischofite. Compared with the DHAL Discovery, it contains elevated concentrations of kosmotropic sodium and sulfate ions, which are capable of reducing the net chaotropicily of MgCl2-rich solutions. The brine of Lake Kryos may therefore be biologically permissive at MgCl2 concentrations previously considered incompatible with life. We characterized the microbiology of the seawater–Kryos brine interface and managed to recover mRNA from the 2.27–3.03 MMgCl2 layer (equivalent to 0.747–0.631 water activity), thereby expanding the established chaotropicity window-for-life. The primary bacterial taxa present there were Kebrit Deep Bacteria 1 candidate division and DHAL-specific group of organisms, distantly related toDesulfohalobium. Two euryarchaeal candidate divisions, Mediterranean Sea Brine Lakes group 1 and halophilic cluster 1, accounted for > 85% of the rRNA-containing archaeal clones derived from the 2.27–3.03 M MgCl2 layer, but were minority community-members in the overlying interface-layers. These findings shed light on the plausibility of life in highly chaotropic environments, geochemical windows for microbial extremophiles, and have implications for habitability elsewhere in the Solar System.

Context. Bright points (BPs) are small-scale, magnetic features ubiquitous across the solar surface. Previously, we have observed and noted their properties for quiet Sun regions. Here, we determine the dynamic properties of BPs using simultaneous quiet Sun and active region data.
Aims. The aim of this paper is to compare the properties of BPs in both active and quiet Sun regions and to determine any difference in the dynamics and general properties of BPs as a result of the varying magnetic activity within these two regions.
Methods. High spatial and temporal resolution G-band observations of active region AR11372 were obtained with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere instrument at the Dunn Solar Telescope. Three subfields of varying polarity and magnetic flux density were selected with the aid of magnetograms obtained from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Bright points within these subfields were subsequently tracked and analysed.
Results. It is found that BPs within active regions display attenuated velocity distributions with an average horizontal velocity of ~0.6 km s-1, compared to the quiet region which had an average velocity of 0.9 km s-1. Active region BPs are also ~21% larger than quiet region BPs and have longer average lifetimes (~132 s) than their quiet region counterparts (88 s). No preferential flow directions are observed within the active region subfields. The diffusion index (γ) is estimated at ~1.2 for the three regions.
Conclusions. We confirm that the dynamic properties of BPs arise predominately from convective motions. The presence of stronger field strengths within active regions is the likely reason behind the varying properties observed. We believe that larger amounts of magnetic flux will attenuate BP velocities by a combination of restricting motion within the intergranular lanes and by increasing the number of stagnation points produced by inhibited convection. Larger BPs are found in regions of higher magnetic flux density and we believe that lifetimes increase in active regions as the magnetic flux stabilises the BPs.

The combinatorial frequency generation by the periodic stacks of magnetically biased semiconductor layers has been modelled in a self-consistent problem formulation, taking into account the nonlinear dynamics of carriers. It is shown that magnetic bias not only renders nonreciprocity of the three-wave mixing process but also significantly enhances the nonlinear interactions in the stacks, especially at the frequencies close to the intrinsic magneto-plasma resonances of the constituent layers. The main mechanisms and properties of the combinatorial frequency generation and emission from the stacks are illustrated by the simulation results, and the effects of the individual layer parameters and the structure arrangement on the stack nonlinear and nonreciprocal response are discussed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The effects of high-pressure processing (HPP) in conjunction with an essential oil-based active packaging on the surface of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken breast were investigated as post-processing listericidal treatment. Three different treatments were used, and all samples were vacuum packed: (i) HPP at 500. MPa for 1. min (control), (ii) active packaging based on coriander essential oil, and (iii) active packaging and HPP. When applied individually, active packaging and pressurisation delayed the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The combination of HPP and active packaging resulted in a synergistic effect reducing the counts of the pathogen below the detection limit throughout 60. days storage at 4. °C. However, when these samples were stored at 8. °C, growth did occur, but again a delay in growth was observed. The effects on colour and lipid oxidation were also studied during storage and were not significantly affected by the treatments. Active packaging followed by in-package pressure treatment could be a useful approach to reduce the risk of L. monocytogenes in cooked chicken without impairing its quality. Industrial relevance: Ready-to-eat products are of great economic importance to the industry. However, they have been implicated in several outbreaks of listeriosis. Therefore, effective ways to reduce the risk from this pathogenic microorganism can be very attractive for manufacturers. This study showed that the use of active packaging followed by HPP can enhance the listericidal efficiency of the treatment while using lower pressure levels, and thus having limited effects on colour and lipid oxidation of RTE chicken breast.

Reconfigurable bi-state interwoven spiral FSSs are explored in this work. Their switching capability is realized by pin diodes that enable the change of the electromagnetic response between transparent and reflecting modes at the specified frequencies in both singly and dual polarised unit cell configurations. The proposed topologies are single layer FSS with their elements acting also as dc current carrying conductors supplying the bias signal for switching pin diodes between the on and off states, thus avoiding the need of external bias lines that can cause parasitic resonances and affect the response at oblique incidence. The presented simulation results show that such active FSSs have potentially good isolation between the transmission and reflection states, while retaining the substantially subwavelength response of the unit cell with large fractional bandwidths (FBWs) inherent to the original passive FSSs.

This article addresses the issue of whether large shareholders in Victorian public companies were active in the control of companies or were simply wealthy rentiers. Using ownership records for 890 firm-years, we examine the control rights, socio-occupational background, and wealth of large shareholders. We find that many large shareholders had limited voting rights and neither they nor family members were directors. This implies that the majority of public companies in the second half of the nineteenth century cannot be characterized as family companies and that large shareholders are better viewed as wealthy gentlemen capitalists rather than entrepreneurs.

This essay investigates the changing dynamics of interaction and paradigm of communication in the design studio. It analyses the process of practical implementation of interactive tools in architectural education which placed the
diversity of students’ cultural experiences, contextual awareness and individual interests as crucial resource for design innovation and inquiry. Building on Brian Lawson’s thesis on creativity in design thinking, this research project undertook
comprehensive investigation of students’ satisfaction of their roles in the studio and the room for liberal thought they are given to elaborate on genuine approach to architectural matters. The cyclical development of interactive learning strategy is explored through two different settings: first, it analyses architectural students’ position as passive/active in the studio, considering their relationships with tutors’ ideals; second, it reports on empirical strategy of students-led workshops at British schools of architecture, during which students have taken the lead of their creative design agenda. The practical implementation of interactive learning tools proved influential in helping students to personalize their design direction and to build a sense of confidence and independence.
