Vegetarianism in Seventh-day Adventist home economics classes : an exploration of the issue

The practice of excluding meat from Adventist schools is at odds with the practice of many Adventists, and the Church which, while recommending vegetarianism, does not require it. The study investigates vegetarianism and explores the origin and aims of home economics, education and Seventh-day Adventism. These components were considered according to the three cognitive interests of the philosopher Jurgen Habermas.

Health beliefs and behaviours of home economics teachers in Victoria

Data from questionnaires mailed to post-primary home economics teachers suggests that they possess untapped knowledge and expertise that could be used in intersectoral approaches to health promotion outside classroom teaching.

Developing mathematical understanding

The notion of scaffolding is used to introduce research on differentiated learning trajectories that make use of activities termed 'prompts'. The prompts are used to enable children to develop the necessary mathematical understanding and skills to keep up with the rest of the class.  They focus on aspects of teaching that teachers identified as important aspects of classroom interactivity that contribute to the understanding: the use of physical representation of concepts: actions aimed at building conceptual links; and the use of language based activity.

Formalizing the concept of entrepreneurial capacity

This study develops a definition of the concept of entrepreneurial capacity and formalizes it in two models explaining how value is created in the innovation process. The formalization integrates the influential opportunity-based definition of entrepreneurship research offered by Shane and Venkataraman (2000) with the consensus prevailing in the management, strategy, economics and entrepreneurship literatures that innovation is a process for transforming the inherent economic value of new knowledge into realized economic value for identified stakeholders. The linear flow and mathematical models presented in the study possess the clarity and richness required of a theoretical framework for generating and testing insightful hypotheses. This study, regarding Penrose (1959) more as theorist of entrepreneurship than of resources, deepens scepticism about the relevance to entrepreneurship of the literatures on the resource-based view of the firm (RBV) and dynamic capabilities (DC). Finally, the arguments and perspectives of the study imply several pedagogic possibilities and challenges for entrepreneurship educators.

Developing mathematical concepts in Australian pre-school settings : the background

The SIMERR project Mathematical Thinking of Pre-school Children in Rural and Regional Australia: Research and Practice included a review of relevant research literature with the aim of making this accessible to researchers as well as early childhood teachers and educators. This paper introduces the methods used in the project and provides a brief summary of the literature pertaining to the development of mathematical concepts.

Assessment of mathematical development in early childhood : some views of preschool practitioners in regional and rural Australia

As part of the project Mathematical Thinking of Preschool Children in Rural and Regional Australia: Research and Practice directors, teachers, and assistants in prior-to-school settings from regional and rural eastern Australia were interviewed to ascertain their beliefs and practices concerning early childhood mathematics. This paper reports the responses to  uestions about their assessment of children’s mathematical activity and development. The practitioners provided examples of both incidental and planned assessment activities, the different forms these took, methods of recording, and how the results were used.
