In this paper, short term hydroelectric scheduling is formulated as a network flow optimization model and solved by interior point methods. The primal-dual and predictor-corrector versions of such interior point methods are developed and the resulting matrix structure is explored. This structure leads to very fast iterations since it avoids computation and factorization of impedance matrices. For each time interval, the linear algebra reduces to the solution of two linear systems, either to the number of buses or to the number of independent loops. Either matrix is invariant and can be factored off-line. As a consequence of such matrix manipulations, a linear system which changes at each iteration has to be solved, although its size is reduced to the number of generating units and is not a function of time intervals. These methods were applied to IEEE and Brazilian power systems, and numerical results were obtained using a MATLAB implementation. Both interior point methods proved to be robust and achieved fast convergence for all instances tested. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We examined the relationship between fungal refuse production and vegetation input in a laboratory colony of the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex coronatus. We found only a strong 6-day time-delay in the production of refuse with variation in substrate intake.

The purpose of this work was to assess the effects of soil preparation methods (with or without subsoiling) on physical properties of a cerrado soil cropped to corn during the, 1986/87 season, in the Selviria county (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil). Also, the objective of this was to check the changes in the soil (dark red latosol-Acrustox) caused by the preparation after nine years of cultivation in comparison with natural state. The experiment consisted of six soil preparation systems: conventional, superpreparation, reversed, revolving hoe, reduced and no-tillage. Along with these systems subsoiling was also tested. The reversed system showed the best com grain yield. Subsoiling only presented positive results in productivity with the no-tillage system. All the preparation system tested degraded the physical properties in comparison with the natural soil.

Selective chemical sympathectomy of the internal sex organs of prepubertal to mature male Wistar rats was performed by chronic treatment with low doses of guanethidine. Plasma testosterone and luteinizing hormone and the intratesticular level of testosterone were determined. The weight and fructose content of seminal vesicle and ventral prostate were also investigated. The results showed that sympathetic innervation is related to the control of the hypophyseal-testicular axis as well as to the growth and potential secretory activity of the male sex accessory glands.

Glucocorticoid hormones modulate the actions of peptide growth factors and constitute important therapeutic tools as anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agents. The C6 rat glioma cell line responds to glucocorticoids with changes in morphology and growth block. The hyper-responsive ST1 cell variant displays a dramatic phenotypic reversion under the influence of these hormones. Thus, the transformed and tumorigenic cells reversibly change to a normal and non-tumorigenic phenotype. In addition, the cells also produce a C-type retrovirus. We used poly A(+) mRNA from ST1 cells that had been treated with hydrocortisone to generate a cDNA library that was then screened, by differential hybridization,for glucocorticoid-responsive cellular sequences. The retroviral genomic RNA was used to generate a viral-specific probe. Cross hybridization led to the isolation of at least 4 cDNA clones of which 3 are cellular sequences and one corresponds to a retroviral gene. These clones were characterized by DNA sequencing and Northern blot hybridization analysis.

Two experiments were carried out in pots with a Dusky Latossol showing a 15% base saturation. In the first experiment dolomitic limestone was applied to reach 45, 60, 75 and 90% of base saturation. In the second, MnSO4 was applied in rates of 30, 60, 90 and 120 ppm,and base saturation was raised to 70%.Soybean plants cv. IAC-9 were grown up to R6, when dry matter production and manganese accumulation were evaluated. Soybean responded to liming up to 60% base saturation, as Mn availability and evantualy Mn absorption were decreased to non-toxic levels. Mn applied to a reclamed soil up to 120 ppm was not enough to cause toxicity to soybean cv IAC-9. All of the chemical extractors (Ammonium Acetate, DTA, Mehlich and H2SO4) showed modification in Mn availabity in soil but were not definitely related to Mn absorption and dry matter production.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate methods for predicting availability of Zn in soils. Surface soil samples representing Podzolized soils from Lins and Marilia var. Marilia and var. Lins, medium texture Dark-Red Latosol, Dusky-Red Latosol and Terra Roxa Estruturada, were gathered from fields in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. Com was used as indicator plant in a greenhouse experiment. Availability of Zn was determined with: 0.5 M CaCl2, 2.0 N MgCl2, N CH3COONH4 (pH 6.0 and 4.8), 0.05 and 0.1 N HCl, 0.05 N H2SO4, 0.005 M DTPA (pH 7.3 and 6.0), 1.0% Na2-EDTA, 0.01 M EDTA + 1.0 M (NH4)2CO3 (pH 8.6) and 0.02 M EDTA + 0.5 M CH3COOH + 0.5 M CH3COONH4. By using the simple correlation coefficients (Zn extracted from soils x absorbed by plants it can be concluded that the complexant agents and acid solutions showed to be efficient. The salt solutions showed low extraction capacity, low correlation coefficients and less accuracy. By considering aspects as accuracy and easy management DTPA pH 7,3 and Na2-EDTA can be indicated as the most apropriates (r values, respectively, 0.873** and 0.868** and V.C. 7.52% and 7.98%).

Aspergillus niger was inoculated into flasks containing mixed of different origins and fluorapatite as a source of phosphorus, or alternatively rock phosphates of different compositions. There was no difference in fungal growth or fluorapatite solubilization when sterilized or unsterilized vinasse was used. Total and soluble solid content was at least two times higher in 65/35 vinasse than in 10/1 vinasse. The higher total sugar content causing higher titratable acidity levels, or the lower fungal growth, may possibly have favored the greater accumulation of soluble phosphate in 10/1 than in 65/10 vinasse. No appreciable differences in residual soluble phosphate levels were detected with increasing fluorapatite concentrations. Rock phosphates of different origins and with different phosphorus concentrations affected the solubilizing ability of the fungus. Whereas crude concentrated apatite phosphorus favored the greatest accumulation of soluble phosphate in the culture medium (1.08 mg/ml), the highest solubilization (72% total phosphate) was achieved with Patos de Minas material obtained from the first crushing.

Alkaline phosphatase activity was released up to 100% from the membrane by using 0.1 U of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C from B. thuringiensis. The Mr of solubilized enzyme was 145,000 by Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration and 66,000 by SDS-PAGE, suggesting a dimeric structure. Solubilization of the membrane-bound enzyme with phospholipase C did not destroy its ability to hydrolyze p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) (264.3 mu mol min(-1) mg(-1)), ATP (42.0 mu mol min(-1) mg(-1)) and pyrophosphate (28.4 mu mol min(-1) mg(-1)). The hydrolysis of ATP and PNPP by solubilized enzyme exhibited ''Michaelian'' kinetics with K-0.5 = 70 and 979 mu M, respectively. For pyrophosphate, K-0.5 was 128 mu M and site-site interactions were observed (n = 1.4). Magnesium ions were stimulatory (K-d = 1.5 mM) but zinc ions were powerful non-competitive inhibitors (K-d = 6.2 mu M) of solubilized enzyme. Treatment of solubilized alkaline phosphatase with Chellex 100 reduced the original PNPPase activity to 5%. Cobalt (K-0.5 = 10.1 mu M), magnesium (K-0.5 = 29.5 mu M) and manganese ions (K-0.5 = 5 mu M) restored the activity of the apoenzyme with positive cooperativity, suggesting that phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C-solubilized alkaline phosphatase is a metalloenzyme. The stimulation of the apoenzyme by calcium ions (K-0.5 = 653 mu M) was lower than that observed for the other ions (26%) and exhibited site-site interactions (n = 0.7). Zinc ions had no effect on the apoenzyme of the solubilized enzyme.

Recently, mechanochemical synthesis was widely used in preparation of perovskite type of materials, such as BaTiO3, PbTiO3, PZT, etc. In this work, the possibility of mechanochemical synthesis of CaTiO3 from different precursors, such as CaCO3 or CaO and TiO2 was investigated. Intensive milling of mixture of CaO and TiO2, under optimal milling conditions, resulted in synthesis of single phase CaTiO3. It was also found that intensive milling of powder mixture containing CaCO3 and TiO2 only activate the powders for the sintering process; hence the CaTiO3 could be obtained at lower temperatures of sintering. To complete reaction of CaTiO3 formation during milling it is necessary to reduce CO2 partial pressure, i.e. it is necessary to change the atmosphere inside the vials during milling. The refractive index and the temperature coefficient of the optical path length change of tellurite (80TeO(2):20Li(2)O) and chalcogenide glasses (72.5Ga(2)S(3):27.5La(2)O(3)) were determined as a function of temperature (up to 150 degrees C) and wavelength (in the range between 454 and 632.8 nm). The tellurite glass exhibits the usual refractive index dispersion in the wavelength range analyzed, while anomalous refractive index dispersion was observed for the chalcogenide glass between 454 and 530 nm. The dispersion parameters were determined by means of the single-effective oscillator model. In addition, a strong dependence of the temperature coefficient of the optical path length on the photon energy and temperature was found for the chalcogenide glass. The latter was correlated to the shift of the optical band gap (or electronic edge) with temperature, which was interpreted by the electron-phonon interaction model. To evaluate the nutritional value of palm kernel meal on the performance Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), five isonitrogenous (30% crude protein), isoenergetic (2800 kcal/kg of digestible energy), and isofibrous (10% crude fiber) diets, with increasing levels of palm kernel meal (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35%). were ad libitum fed to fingerlings with initial body weight of 1.52g +/- 0.04, housed per 120 days in 35 aquarium of 60 liters with fingerlings each. The environmental culture condition were monitored during all experimental period. Statistical analyses of recorded data were performed through polynomial regression models. To determine the apparent digestibility, macroscopic analysis of viscera and microscopic analysis of intestine epithelium were performed. The obtained results indicated that the inclusion of palm kernel meal up to 35% Nile tilapia diets did not affects the apparent digestibility and did not induce any pathological effects on viscera and intestinal epithelium.
