Well preserved middle Miocene to Recent radiolarians were recovered from several sites in the Weddell Sea by ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) Leg 113. Low rates of sedimentation, hiatuses, and poor core recovery in some sites are offset by the nearly complete recovery of a late middle Miocene to late Pliocene section at Site 689 on the Maud Rise. Although a hiatus within the latest Miocene exists, this site still provides an excellent reference section for Antarctic biostratigraphy. A detailed radiolarian stratigraphy for the middle Miocene to late Pliocene of Site 689 is given, together with supplemental stratigraphic data from ODP Leg 113 Sites 690, 693, 695, 696, and 697. A refined Antarctic zonation for the middle Miocene to Recent is presented, based on the previous zonations of Hays (1965), Chen (1975), Weaver (1976b), and Keany (1979). The late Miocene radiolarian Acrosphaera australis n. sp. is described and used to define the A. australis zone, ranging from the first appearance of the nominate species to the last appearance of Cycladophora spongothorax (Chen) Lombari and Lazarus 1988. The species Botryopera deflandrei Petrushevskaya 1975 is transferred to Antarctissa deflandrei (Petrushevskaya) n. comb.

The book presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies, carried out in the Cape Verde fault zone in the 3-rd cruise of R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov (1986). Detailed characterization of bottom relief, thickness and structure of the sedimentary cover, magnetic field, crust structure, lithology and stratigraphy of sediments, petrography and geochemistry of magmatic rocks. Conclusions about tectonic layering of the crust and upper mantle in the fault zone, and about a concurrent structural section of large mantle inhomogeneities have been done. The book is the first monographic description of a major fault structure of the ocean floor.

The stratigraphy and pollen analysis of the deposits show that this is a lake basin which during the Late-glacial period was partially filled by lake clays and muds. One of the main interests of the pollen diagrams lies in the division of zone i into three suh-zones showing a minor climatic oscillation which seems to be comparable with the Boiling oscillation of northern Europe. During Post-glacial time the greater part of the deposits has been muds but on one side a fen developed which in early zone VI was sufficiently dry to support birch and pine wood. Later in zone VI the water table must have risen slightly because the fen peats were gradually covered by a rather oxidized mud suggesting that the fen became replaced by a shallow swamp with a widely fluctuating water table. In the Atlantic period the basin was reflooded and the more central deposits were covered by a layer of mud. Later in the central region, swamp and eventually Sphagnum bog communities developed. The whole area is now covered by a sihy soil and forms a flat meadowland.

The precision of late Paleocene to middle Eocene nannofossil datums is investigated by means of quantitative methods and correlated to the magnetic polarity stratigraphy, using sequences from the Northwest Pacific, Southeast Atlantic and Italy. It is the rule rather than the exception to find tails of very reduced abundances prior to, or after, a range of consistent and higher abundances. The absolutely first or final occurrence of a species, therefore, seldom provides a synchronous datum when material from different geographic areas are compared. On the other band, synchroneity is often confirmed when the initial sharp rise or the final sharp decline in abundance is used as datum level. The use of datums not employed in the two principal existing nannofossil zonal schemes can substantially improve the biostratigraphic resolution. Two established zonal markers show abundance patterns making them unsuitable as datums: the first occurrences of Ellipsolithus macellus (base NP4, diachronous) and Tribrachiatus nunnii (base NP10 and Paleocene/Eocene boundary, too rare and too short range in open ocean sections). The first occurrence of either Fasciculithus spp. or Sphenolithus spp. is a better marker near the base of NP4. The first occurrence of Discoaster diastypus at 56.6 Ma represents a suitable replacement for recognition of the Paleocene/Eocene boundary.

Oxygen and carbon isotope ratios were measured in benthic foraminifers from the entire Pliocene and latest Miocene sections of Site 846, a 180-m section, at a sampling interval of 10 cm. This provides a temporal resolution of about 2500 yr. The documented continuity of the record is excellent. Using the time scale that was developed on the basis of orbital tuning of GRAPE density records, we observed a fairly constant phase relationship between delta18O and variations in the obliquity of Earth's rotational axis. A new numbering scheme for Pliocene isotope stages is proposed. This high-resolution delta18O record clarifies several interesting aspects of late Neogene climatic evolution, including a "glacial" event that may have caused the final Messinian desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea; one or more "interglacial" events that might have caused refilling of the Mediterranean; a well-resolved couplet of glacial events at about the age of the Sidujfall Subchron; interglacial extremes in the early part of the Gauss that could have resulted from either significant deglaciation on Antarctica or from warming of deep water; and a gradual ramp of increasingly extreme "glacial" events, starting at about the Kaena Subchron and culminating with delta18O stage 100 in the earliest Matuyama.

The pattern of ichthyolith distribution established in sequences with stratigraphies based on calcareous or siliceous microfossils is used to provide age correlations for three deep-sea pelagic clay intervals that lack the better known microfossils. At Site 637, approximately 25 m of brown clay in Cores 103-637A-21R through 103-637A-23R underlies upper Miocene sediments and is of Paleocene to early Eocene age. At Site 639, 1.7 m of brown clay in Core 103-639C-2R is Eocene to Oligocene. At Site 640, 3.5 m of clay in Cores 103-640A-1R and 103-640A-2R contains a Cretaceous to Paleocene sequence, with the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary between 84 and 103 cm in Section 103-640A-2R-1.
