Determination of direction of littoral transport along the north shore of Santa Rosa Island, Florida

The purpose of this study was to determine the actual direction of littoral transport along the north shore of Santa Rosa Island in the vicinity of Pensacola Beach, Florida. To accomplish this objective the sand tracer method was used for the study. Visual observations and instrument recordings of the environment factors were also made during the tracing operations. The investigation covered a time span from September 14, 1976 to March 12, 1977. (PDF contains 68 pages.)

[ES] En los últimos tiempos existe un énfasis creciente en la comercialización de la investigación universitaria a través de la creación de empresas (spin-offs). Ahora bien, los fenómenos que el concepto de spin-off universitaria trata de abarcar no son homogéneos. Por esta razón, parece conveniente dilucidar las múltiples realidades que abarca organizándolas mediante tipologías.

[ES] En las últimas décadas el número de spin-offs universitarias creadas en el Sistema Universitario Español ha aumentado considerablemente; sin embargo, estas empresas tienen que hacer frente a problemas como la falta de financiación o de capacidades empresariales por parte de los fundadores. A partir de los datos extraídos de una encuesta a 72 spin-offs creadas en España, tratamos de detectar y analizar cuáles son los problemas más habituales con los que se encuentran estas empresas, y proponemos posibles vías de solución.

Vertical transport and exchange of materials in the upper waters of the oceans (VERTEX): introduction to the program, hydrographic conditions and major component fluxes during VERTEX I

This paper introduces VERTEX, a multi-disciplinary research program dealing with various aspects of particle transport in the upper, high-energy layers (0-2000 m) of the ocean. Background information is presented on hydrography, biological composition of trapped particulates, and major component fluxes observed on a cruise off central California (VERTEX I). Organic C fluxes measured with two trap systems are compared with several other estimates taken from the literature. The intent of this overview paper is to provide a common setting in an economical manner, and avoid undue repetition of background and ancillary information in subsequent publications. A New Model for Sediment Transport

The problem of predicting sediment transportation by water waves is treated analytically with the rate of wave energy dissipation or wave damping. With resorting to the theory of shallow water waves and the basis of Yamamoto’s Coulomb-damped poroelastic model, the Boussinesq-type equation has been derived over a variation depth bed. For convenience Cnoidal wave is just discussed, The Cnoidal wave with complex wave length and wave velocity, which are as a function of wave frequency, water depth, permeability, Poisson’s ratio and complex elastic moduli of bed soil, is applied to analyse the rate of sediment transportation. Considering the sediment transportation depended on the shear stress near-bed or the horizontal velocity, the conclusion of Yamamoto’s experiment in clay bed has been extended to general situation. It could be figured out that the model should provide a method to avoid the undistinguishable factors during sediment transport processes and relate mass transport with the sediment peculiarities.
