Even though the canonical Jesus' infancy stories have always provoked great interest in popular culture and in the arts, they have been neglected in research during the last decades due to the relatively late date of their redaction. Since the monograph by Raymond Brown, The Birth of the Messiah , the researchers working on this topic have not attempted to consider its historical impact. In this volume, an international team of scholars proposes firstly a reconsideration of the historical background of these stories in terms of early Jewish and Christian identity quests. Secondly, they deal with early Christian questions on Jesus' infancy and childhood through canonical and apocryphal Gospels including information from Patristic and documentary literature. On the theological level, this volume illustrates the impact that these apocryphal texts, recognized as "useful for the soul" (a phrase coined by François Bovon), have had on the Christian faith.

Biological monitoring of occupational exposure is characterized by important variability, due both to variability in the environment and to biological differences between workers. A quantitative description and understanding of this variability is important for a dependable application of biological monitoring. This work describes this variability, using a toxicokinetic model, for a large range of chemicals for which reference biological reference values exist. A toxicokinetic compartmental model describing both the parent compound and its metabolites was used. For each chemical, compartments were given physiological meaning. Models were elaborated based on physiological, physicochemical, and biochemical data when available, and on half-lives and central compartment concentrations when not available. Fourteen chemicals were studied (arsenic, cadmium, carbon monoxide, chromium, cobalt, ethylbenzene, ethyleneglycol monomethylether, fluorides, lead, mercury, methyl isobutyl ketone, penthachlorophenol, phenol, and toluene), representing 20 biological indicators. Occupational exposures were simulated using Monte Carlo techniques with realistic distributions of both individual physiological parameters and exposure conditions. Resulting biological indicator levels were then analyzed to identify the contribution of environmental and biological variability to total variability. Comparison of predicted biological indicator levels with biological exposure limits showed a high correlation with the model for 19 out of 20 indicators. Variability associated with changes in exposure levels (GSD of 1.5 and 2.0) is shown to be mainly influenced by the kinetics of the biological indicator. Thus, with regard to variability, we can conclude that, for the 14 chemicals modeled, biological monitoring would be preferable to air monitoring. For short half-lives (less than 7 hr), this is very similar to the environmental variability. However, for longer half-lives, estimated variability decreased. Popularizing science without the support of scholars. Jean Lanteires and the Journal de Lausanne (1786-1792). - Founded in 1786 by Jean Lanteires, the Journal de Lausanne is a widespread, weekly journal with the express aim of disseminating scientific knowledge among the lower and middle classes. Its articles are easily comprehensible and cover a wide range of topics from literature to agriculture, from natural sciences to charity. Considerable space is given to reader's questions and comments. The journal can be situated somewhere between an almanac and a scientific journal. Lanteires' attempt to solicit contributions from scholars of medicine and natural sciences received a dismissive response. Of the few articles written by specialists, the majority deal with agriculture and charity. Lanteires' difficult relationship with the scholarly community is reflected in the journal's content. This makes the Journal de Lausanne a privileged observatory for studying the social context of the vulgarization process in late-eighteenth-century Switzerland and Europe.

This issue opens the fourth volume of the Intangible Capital journal, which makes its way towards the fifth year of publication. As usually, we start this volume by evaluating the previous one and tracing new directions. Among the main contributions during the year 2007, we consider important to highlight the following aspects: the renewal of the scientific indexation agreements, the platform change to OJS, the appointment of a new editor, new members included in the editorial board, the board of reviewers, the change towards a bilingual model, the new financing obtained and, the last but not the least, the work undertaken together with many scientific editors of open access Spanish journals for obtaining the positive evaluation of the CNEAI (National Commission for the Evaluation of the Research Activity) and thus, being a proof of scientific excellence

The Ombudsman helps citizens understand and maneuver through the often complicated depths and layers of government. In many cases, assistants facilitate citizen dialogue with an agency, explain the reasons for laws or policies, recommend revisions to unfair policies or unreasonable decisions, and resolve disputes informally. In some cases, the Ombudsman will pursue more formal investigations, take sworn testimony, and issue public reports. Here, in this periodic newsletter, you’ll find a small sampling of the ombudsman’s work over the previous two months. If you need help resolving a problem with state or local government, please see our contact information at the bottom of the page.
