The description of the monolayer formed at Au(1 1 1) by 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) under potential control has been based on electrochemical data (charge measurements) and spectroscopic information from the subtractively normalized interfacial Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy method (SNIFTIRS). From the quantitative analysis of the SNIFTIR spectra, a surface coverage Γ/Γmax was extracted for each sample potential. The evolution of the coverage with potential was in full agreement with the charge density curve. The shift of the pzc in the presence of MBI indicates that the adsorbed molecules have a nonzero component of the permanent dipole moment in the direction perpendicular to the electrode surface. Thanks to the high quality of the spectra, it was possible to determine the orientation of MBI molecules at the surface in the monolayer and submonolayer range. The angle between the C2-axis of the molecule and the direction normal to the surface is close to 64 ± 4° and its small change (<15°) with potential indicates that the orientation of the molecules is chiefly controlled by the chemical interaction between the sulphur atom and the gold surface. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. While cochlear implants (CIs) usually provide high levels of speech recognition in quiet, speech recognition in noise remains challenging. To overcome these difficulties, it is important to understand how implanted listeners separate a target signal from interferers. Stream segregation has been studied extensively in both normal and electric hearing, as a function of place of stimulation. However, the effects of pulse rate, independent of place, on the perceptual grouping of sequential sounds in electric hearing have not yet been investigated. A rhythm detection task was used to measure stream segregation. The results of this study suggest that while CI listeners can segregate streams based on differences in pulse rate alone, the amount of stream segregation observed decreases as the base pulse rate increases. Further investigation of the perceptual dimensions encoded by the pulse rate and the effect of sequential presentation of different stimulation rates on perception could be beneficial for the future development of speech processing strategies for CIs.

We present a model as well as experimental results for a surface electrode radiofrequency Paul trap that has a circular electrode geometry well suited for trapping single ions and two-dimensional planar ion crystals. The trap design is compatible with microfabrication and offers a simple method by which the height of the trapped ions above the surface may be changed in situ. We demonstrate trapping of single Sr88+ ions over an ion height range of 200-1000 μm for several hours under Doppler laser cooling and use these to characterize the trap, finding good agreement with our model. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

The rotating-frame nuclear magnetic relaxation rate of spins diffusing on a disordered lattice has been calculated by Monte Carlo methods. The disorder includes not only variation in the distances between neighbouring spin sites but also variation in the hopping rate associated with each site. The presence of the disorder, particularly the hopping rate disorder, causes changes in the time-dependent spin correlation functions which translate into asymmetry in the characteristic peak in the temperature dependence of the dipolar relaxation rate. The results may be used to deduce the average hopping rate from the relaxation but the effect is not sufficiently marked to enable the distribution of the hopping rates to be evaluated. The distribution, which is a measure of the degree of disorder, is the more interesting feature and it has been possible to show from the calculation that measurements of the relaxation rate as a function of the strength of the radiofrequency spin-locking magnetic field can lead to an evaluation of its width. Some experimental data on an amorphous metal - hydrogen alloy are reported which demonstrate the feasibility of this novel approach to rotating-frame relaxation in disordered materials.

To evaluate the effect of mass transfer limitations in the three-phase oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol carried out in toluene and an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide), studies have been performed in a rotating disc reactor and compared with those carried out in a stirred tank reactor where mass transfer effects are considered negligible. High catalyst efficiencies are found in the stirred tank reactor with the use of both ionic liquid and toluene, although there is a decrease in rate for the ionic liquid reactions. In contrast, internal pore diffusion limits the reaction in both solvents in the rotating disc reactor. This mass transfer resistance reduces the problem of overoxidation of the metal surface when the reaction is carried out in toluene, leading to significantly higher rates of reaction than expected, although at the cost of decreased selectivity.

High- resolution UVES/ VLT spectra of B 12, an extreme pole- on Be star in the SMC cluster NGC 330, have been analysed using non-LTE model atmospheres to obtain its chemical composition relative to the SMC standard star AV304. We find a general underabundance of metals which can be understood in terms of an extra contribution to the stellar continuum due to emission from a disk which we estimate to be at the similar to 25% level. When this is corrected for, the nitrogen abundance for B12 shows no evidence of enhancement by rotational mixing as has been found in other non-Be B-type stars in NGC 330, and is inconsistent with evolutionary models which include the effects of rotational mixing. A second Be star, NGC330-B 17, is also shown to have no detectable nitrogen lines. Possible explanations for the lack of rotational mixing in these rapidly rotating stars are discussed, one promising solution being the possibility that magnetic fields might inhibit rotational mixing.
