This paper addresses the theoretical aspects of passive intermodulation (PIM) generation in printed transmission lines. In order to elucidate the mechanisms of PIM generation, a new model of the transmission line length with distributed nonlinearity is proposed. The developed model has been validated by the near-field measurements of PIM product distributions along the microstrip lines. The contributions of nonlinear mixing, power dissipation, and load matching to PIM products have been analyzed in detail. The obtained results reveal the fundamental properties of PIM generation in finite lengths of printed lines with distributed non-linearity and identify possible means for PIM mitigation. It was shown for the first time that the reverse PIM products in a matched transmission line with distributed nonlinearity are generated due to nonlinear scattering. © 2008 IEEE.

Electromagnetic radiation originating with localized surface plasmons in the metal-tip/metal-sample nanocavity of a scanning tunneling microscope is demonstrated to extend to a wavelength lambda of at least 1.7 mu m. Progressive spectral extension beyond lambda similar to 1.0 mu m occurs for increasing tip radius above similar to 15 nm, reaching lambda similar to 1.7 mu m for tip radius similar to 100 nm; these observations are corroborated by use of a simple physical model that relates the discrete plasmon mode frequencies to the tip radius. This spectral extension opens up a new regime for scanning tunneling microscope-based optical spectroscopy.

The mid-infrared optical response of c-axis thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta has been studied using Otto-configuration attenuated total reflectance. The measured reflectance-angle characteristics are dominated by a strong absorption feature due to the excitation of surface plasmons, and can be modeled to determine the a-b plane dielectric function. The results show that while epsilon(i,) and therefore sigma(r), are temperature independent, \epsilon(r)\ exhibits a moderate decrease with generalized Drude analysis shows that the plasma frequency is independent of temperature, but decreases with decreasing doping. The scattering rate increases with temperature, and also increases with decreasing doping, consistent with stronger coupling in the underdoped regime. The mass-enhancement is small but increases to 30-40% at delta = 0.6. Difficulties in reconciling the results with some current theories of high-T-c materials are discussed. Finally, the surface plasmon propagation lengths and penetration depths are shown to vary systematically with doping. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Results are reported on the a-b plane dielectric function (epsilon) of thin-film c-axis NdBa2Cu3O7-delta with close to optimal oxygen doping (T-c similar to 90 K) in the mid-infrared (wavelength 3.392 mum) over the temperature range 85 K to 300 K. An attenuated total reflectance technique based on the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons is used. The results show that \epsilon (r)\ decreases quasi-linearly with increasing temperature, while Ei is invariant with temperature to within experimental uncertainties. Representative values are epsilon = [epsilon (r) + i epsilon (i)] = (-12.9 +/- 0.6) + i(23.0 +/- 1.5) at T similar to 295 K and epsilon = (-15.7 +/- 0.7) + i(23.5 +/- 1.1) at T similar to 90 K. The raw data an interpreted in terms of the generalized Drude model which gives effective scattering rates (1/tau*) that increase with temperature from about 3800 cm(-1) at 90 K to about 4300 cm(-1) at 295 K. There are indications of a superlinear T-dependence in the scattering, 1/tau*: a fit to a function of the form 1/tau* = A + BTalpha gives alpha = 2.8 +/- 0.7. The effective plasma frequency, omega (p)*, with an average value of approximately 21 000 cm(-1) was independent of temperature.

The a-b plane dielectric function (epsilon) of c-axis YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films with T-c > 85 K was measured at lambda = 3.392 mum in the temperature range 85-300 It, using an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) technique based on the excitation of surface plasmons, The results show that \epsilon (r)\ decreases quasi-linearly with increasing temperature, while Ei is invariant to temperature within experimental uncertainties. Typical values are epsilon (ab) = -23 + 16.5i at similar to 295 R and epsilon (ab) = -27 + 15.5i at similar to 90 K. A generalised Drude analysis yields effective scattering rates (1/tau*) that increase with temperature from similar to 1500 to similar to 1900 cm(-1). The temperature dependent rates best fit an equation of the form 1/tau* = a + bT(alpha) with alpha = 1.46 +/- 0.40. The effective plasma frequencies of w(p)* similar to 18,500 cm(-1) are almost independent of temperature. The uniquely detailed temperature dependence of the results confirm and consolidate data obtained by other groups using normal reflectance methods, but contradict our previously published ATR measurements. An experimental investigation of the effect of conductor-to-substrate interface on distributed passive intermodulation (PIM) generation in printed microstrip lines has been undertaken using the custom-designed microwave laminates with removed surface bonding layers and with the commercial adhesion promotion applied to the conductor underside. The study of long-term stability of PIM performance of the printed circuits is reported for the first time. The comprehensive measurement results, observations of the selfimprovement of the PIM performance and the effect of panel bending on PIM generation in printed boards with different finishing are presented. A consistent physical interpretation of the observed phenomena is proposed. The results of this study provide new important considerations for the design and characterisation of low-PIM printed circuits.

A detailed investigation on planar two dimensional metallodielectric dipole arrays with enhanced near-fields for sensing applications was carried out. Two approaches for enhancing the near-fields and increasing the quality factor were studied. The reactive power stored in the vicinity of the array at resonance increases rapidly with increasing periodicity. Higher quality factors are produced as a result. The excitation of the odd mode in the presence of a perturbation gives rise to a sharp resonance with near-field enhanced by at least an order of magnitude compared to unperturbed arrays. The trade-off between near-field enhancement and thermal losses was also studied, and the effect of supporting dielectric layers on thermal losses and quality factors were examined. Secondary transmissions due to the dielectric alone were found to enhance and reduce cyclically the quality factor as a function of the thickness of the dielectric material. The performance of a perturbed frequency selective surface in sensing nearby materials was investigated. Finally, unperturbed and perturbed arrays working at infrared frequencies were demonstrated experimentally. (C) 2011 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Nebular spectra of supernovae (SNe) offer an unimpeded view of the inner region of the ejecta, where most nucleosynthesis takes place. Optical spectra cover most, but not all, of the emitting elements and therefore offer only a partial view of the products of the explosion. Simultaneous optical-infrared spectra, on the other hand, contain emission lines of all important elements, from C and O through to the intermediate mass elements (IME) Mg, Si, S, Ca and to Fe and Ni. In particular, Si and S are best seen in the IR. The availability of IR data makes it possible to explore in greater detail the results of the explosion. SN 2007gr is the first Type Ic SN for which such data are available. Modelling the spectra with a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) code reveals that the inner ejecta contain similar to 1M(circle dot) of material within a velocity of approximate to 4500 km s(-1). The same mass of Ni-56 derived from the light-curve peak (0.076M(circle dot)) was used to power the spectrum, yielding consistent results. We present near- (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) photometric data of the Type Ibn supernova (SN) 2006jc obtained with the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT), the Gemini North Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope between days 86 and 493 post-explosion. We find that the IR behaviour of SN 2006jc can be explained as a combination of IR echoes from two manifestations of circumstellar material. The bulk of the NIR emission arises from an IR echo from newly condensed dust in a cool dense shell (CDs) produced by the interaction of the ejecta Outward shock with a dense shell of circumstellar material ejected by the progenitor in a luminous blue variable (LBV)-like outburst about two years prior to the SN explosion. The CDs dust mass reaches a modest 3.0 x 10(-4) M-circle dot by day 230. While dust condensation within a CDs formed behind the ejecta inward shock has been proposed before for one event (SN 1998S), SN 2006jc is the first one showing evidence for dust condensation in a CDs formed behind the ejecta outward shock in the circumstellar material. At later epochs, a substantial and growing contribution to the IR fluxes arises from an IR echo from pre-existing dust in the progenitor wind. The mass of the pre-existing circumstellar medium (CSM) dust is at least similar to 8 x 10(-3) M-circle dot. This paper therefore adds to the evidence that mass-loss from the progenitors of core-collapse SNe could be a major source of dust in the Universe. However, yet again, we see no direct evidence that the explosion of an SN produces anything other than a very modest amount of dust.
