IPH response to Department for Social Development: introduction of powers to prohibit or restrict irresponsible alcohol promotions

Alcohol–related harm is an increasing public health concern and contributor to health inequalities on this island. IPH considered this consultation on powers to restrict alcohol promotions as a significant development towards harmonised all island regulations to tackle excessive alcohol consumption.

Proposed Sugar Sweetened Drinks Tax: Health Impact Assessment

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) was requested by the Department of Health (RoI) to undertake a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of a proposed tax on sugar sweetened drinks (SSDs) in 2012. The public health priority for this proposal was to consider the potential of such a tax to address the problem of overweight and obesity in Ireland. The HIA was overseen by the Special Action Group on Obesity (SAGO) and guided by a steering group. The HIA process involved a population profile, a stakeholder consultation event and a literature review. This information, paralleled by a modelling exercise undertaken by Dr. Mike Rayner and his team in the University of Oxford was presented to the steering group to inform their conclusions.

Fred Paccaud, professeur d'épidémiologie et de santé publique (Lausanne), réagit à la campagne de dénigrement menée en avril 2008 contre le directeur de l'Office fédéral de la santé publique et les campagnes de prévention. Selon lui, "le vrai enjeu de cette campagne est de contrecarrer la mise sur pied d'une loi fédérale sur la prévention, qui devrait être mise en consultation en juin 2008".

Reconnaître le tempérament d'un enfant est pourtant une étape souvent utile à la construction d'une alliance thérapeutique avec la famille. Le modèle en neuf traits de Thomas et Chess et l'épigenèse probabiliste de Gottlieb nous semblent offrir des repères utiles au clinicien. Il est alors possible, dans un second temps, d'aborder les problématiques personnelles des parents qui desservent leur ajustement aux besoins spécifiques de l'enfant.

A Strategy for Maternity Care in Northern Ireland 2012-2012 (PDF 634KB)

DHSSPS has carried out a review of policy on maternity service provision in Northern Ireland. The review focused on the best available evidence for the care and treatment of mothers-to-be; quality, safety and service sustainability; wider workforce issues; and professional roles and responsibilities. As a result, a draft strategy was developed, which was the subject of a public consultation from 28 September 2011 to 23 January 2012. Following an analysis of the responses to the consultation, the final strategy, A Strategy for Maternity Care in Northern Ireland 2012-2018, was published on 2 July 2012.
