The parameters of the length-weight relationship of the form W = aLb are presented for 51 species of commercially important marine fishes and shellfishes caught along the southern coast of Karnataka, India. Samples from commercial (trawl, purse seines, gill nets) and artisanal gears were taken during August 1999 to May 2001. The ‘b’ value ranged between 1.942 and 3.616 with a mean of 2.80, standard deviation of 0.32, and mode of 3.

Rearing of anemonefishes is now relatively routine compared to the culture of cardinalfishes (Apogonidae) or angelfishes (Pomacanthidae). However, it is still a labor intensive, time intensive and expensive procedure. To reduce time and cost of rearing anemonefishes, experiments were undertaken to improve the methods for rearing Amphiprion melanopus. These experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the length of photoperiod on larval duration, growth to metamorphosis and early juvenile phase. Growth of larvae was significantly faster and the duration of the larval phase was significantly shorter, under a photoperiod of 16 hours light/8 hours dark, compared to the photoperiods of 12 hours light/12 hours dark and 24 hours light/0 hours dark.

Monthly length-frequency data of spiny lobster Panulirus homarus collected from the south coast of Sri Lanka during 1988-1990 were analyzed to estimate von Bertallanfy growth parameters. The asymptotic lengths estimated using Wetherall plots were 322 mm and 315 mm total length for the males and females, respectively. Using o' values of 3.53 for males and 3.61 for females, the growth constant (K) was estimated as 0.21 year super(1) and 0.27 year super(1) for the males and females, respectively. The estimates of natural and total mortality (M and Z) are 0.98 year super(1), 1.96 year super(1) for males and 0.92 year super(1), 1.54 year super(1) for females respectively. Recruitment appears to occur in two pulses per year.

Fishing was America's first industry, and turtling played an important role in the nation's developing fisheries. However, before the European settlers arrived in the New World, Native Americans had already developed spiritual and gastronomic relationships with sea turtles. There are indications that ancient Florida tribes had eaten sea turtles and then placed the skulls in burial mounds (Johnson, 1952).
