We investigate the dynamics of a sinusoidally driven ferromagnetic martensitic ribbon by adopting a recently introduced model that involves strain and magnetization as order parameters. Retaining only the dominant mode of excitation we reduce the coupled set of partial differential equations for strain and magnetization to a set of coupled ordinary nonlinear equations for the strain and magnetization amplitudes. The equation for the strain amplitude takes the form of parametrically driven oscillator. Finite strain amplitude can only be induced beyond a critical value of the strength of the magnetic field. Chaotic response is seen for a range of values of all the physically interesting parameters. The nature of the bifurcations depends on the choice of temperature relative to the ordering of the Curie and the martensite transformation temperatures. We have studied the nature of response as a function of the strength and frequency of the magnetic field, and magneto-elastic coupling. In general, the bifurcation diagrams with respect to these parameters do not follow any standard route. The rich dynamics exhibited by the model is further illustrated by the presence of mixed mode oscillations seen for low frequencies. The geometric structure of the mixed mode oscillations in the phase space has an unusual deep crater structure with an outer and inner cone on which the orbits circulate. We suggest that these features should be seen in experiments on driven magneto-martensitic ribbons. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

This work explores the preparation of nanocrystalline Cr3+ (1-5 mol%) doped CaSiO3 phosphors by solution combustion process and study of its photoluminescence (PL) behavior. The nanopowders are well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. PXRD results confirm monoclinic phase upon calcination at 950 degrees C for 3 h. SEM micrographs indicates that the powder is highly porous and agglomerated. The TEM images show the powder to consist of spherical shaped particles of size similar to 30-60 nm. Upon 323 nm excitation, the emission profile of CaSiO3:Cr3+ exhibits a narrow red emission peak at 641 nm due to E-2 -> (4)A(2) transition and broad band at 722 nm due to T-4(2g) -> (4)A(2g). It is observed that PL intensity increases with increase in Cr3+ concentration and highest PL intensity is observed for 3 mol% doped sample. The PL intensity decreases with further increase in Cr3+ doping. This decrease in PL intensity beyond 3 mol% is ascribed to concentration quenching. Racah parameters are calculated to describe the effects of electron-electron repulsion within the crystal lattice. The parameters show 21% reduction in the Racah parameter of free ion and the complex, indicating the moderate nephelauxetic effect in the lattice. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Gd1.96-xYxEu0.04O3 (x = 0.0, 0.49, 0.98, 1.47, 1.96 mol%) nanophosphors were synthesized by propellant combustion method at low temperature (400 degrees C). The powder X-ray diffraction patterns of as formed Gd1.96Eu0.04O3 showed monoclinic phase, however with the addition of yttria it transforms from monoclinic to pure cubic phase. The porous nature increases with increase of yttria content. The particle size was estimated from Scherrer's and W-H plots which was found to be in the range 30-40 nm. These results were in well agreement with transmission electron microscopy studies. The optical band gap energies estimated were found to be in the range 5.32-5.49 eV. PL emission was recorded under 305 nm excitation show an intense emission peak at 611 nm along with other emission peaks at 582, 641 nm. These emission peaks were attributed to the transition of D-5(0) —> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) of Eu3+ ions. It was observed that PL intensity increases with increase of Y content up to x = 0.98 and thereafter intensity decreases. CIE color co-ordinates indicates that at x = 1.47 an intense red bright color can be achieved, which could find a promising application in flat panel displays. The cubic and monoclinic phases show different thermoluminescence glow peak values measured under identical conditions. The response of the cubic phase to the applied dose showed good linearity, negligible fading, and simple glow curve structure than monoclinic phase indicating that suitability of this phosphor in dosimetric applications. Dy-doped GdOOH microspherical structures were prepared in minutes without using any structure-directing agents, through the microwave irradiation route. The as-prepared product consists of nearly monodisperse sphere-like entities with each one representing a three-level hierarchy in its formation. Dy:GdOOH powder samples show a bright blue-green luminescence under UV excitation, making these structures potentially important in the field of optical and luminescent devices. Finally, thermal conversion to the corresponding oxide structures occurs at modest temperatures, spherical morphology intact and with enhanced luminescence behaviour. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Giant grained (42 mu m) translucent Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 ceramic was fabricated by conventional sintering technique using the powders obtained via solid state reaction route. These samples were confirmed to possess tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (P4bm) at room temperature. The scanning electron microscopy established the average grain size to be close to 20 mu m. The photoluminescence studies carried out on these ceramics indicated sharp emission bands around 433 and 578 nm at an excitation wavelength of 350 nm which were attributed to band-edge emission as the band gap was 2.76 eV determined by Kubelka-Munk function. The dielectric properties of these ceramics were studied over wide frequency range (100-1 MHz) at room temperature. The decrease in dielectric constant with frequency could be explained on the basis of Koops theory. The dielectric constant and the loss were found to decrease with increasing frequency. The Curie temperature was confirmed to be similar to 370 A degrees C based on the dielectric anomaly observed when these measurements were carried out over a temperature range of 30-500 A degrees C. This shows a deviation from Curie-Weiss behaviour and hence an indicator of the occurrence of disordering in the system, the gamma = 1.23 which confirms the diffuse ferroelectric transition. These ceramics at room temperature exhibited P-E hysteresis loops, though not well saturated akin to that of their single crystalline counterparts. These are the suitable properties for ferroelectric random access memory applications.

We developed a multiple light-sheet microscopy (MLSM) system capable of 3D fluorescence imaging. Employing spatial filter in the excitation arm of a SPIM system, we successfully generated multiple light-sheets. This improves upon the existing SPIM system and is capable of 3D volume imaging by simultaneously illuminating multiple planes in the sample. Theta detection geometry is employed for data acquisition from multiple specimen layers. This detection scheme inherits many advantages including, background reduction, cross-talk free fluorescence detection and high-resolution at long working distance. Using this technique, we generated 5 equi-intense light-sheets of thickness approximately 7: 5 mm with an inter-sheet separation of 15 mm. Moreover, the light-sheets generated by MLSM is found to be 2 times thinner than the state-of-art SPIM system. Imaging of fluorescently coated yeast cells of size 4 +/- 1 mm (encaged in Agarose gel-matrix) is achieved. Proposed imaging technique may accelerate the field of fluorescence microscopy, cell biology and biophotonics.

Tetracene is an important conjugated molecule for device applications. We have used the diagrammatic valence bond method to obtain the desired states, in a Hilbert space of about 450 million singlets and 902 million triplets. We have also studied the donor/acceptor (D/A)-substituted tetracenes with D and A groups placed symmetrically about the long axis of the molecule. In these cases, by exploiting a new symmetry, which is a combination of C-2 symmetry and electron-hole symmetry, we are able to obtain their low-lying states. In the case of substituted tetracene, we find that optically allowed one-photon excitation gaps reduce with increasing D/A strength, while the lowest singlet triplet gap is only wealdy affected. In all the systems we have studied, the excited singlet state, S-i, is at more than twice the energy of the lowest triplet state and the second triplet is very close to the S-1 state. Thus, donor-acceptor-substituted tetracene could be a good candidate in photovoltaic device application as it satisfies energy criteria for singlet fission. We have also obtained the model exact second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients using the correction vector method, and we find that the SHG responses increase with the increase in D/A strength.

This article describes the determination of the internal structure of heterogeneous nanoparticle systems including inverted core-shell (CdS core and CdSe shell) and alloyed (CdSeS) quantum dots using depth-resolved, variable-energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A unique feature of this work is the combination of photoelectron spectroscopy performed at lower X-ray energies (400-700 eV), to achieve surface sensitivity, with bulk sensitive measurements at high photon energies (>2000 eV), thereby providing detailed information about the whole nanoparticle structure with a great accuracy. The use of high photon energies furthermore allows us to investigate nanoparticles much larger than those studied thus far. This capability is a consequence of the much-increased mean free path of the photoelectron achieved at high excitation energies. Our results show that the actual structures of the synthesized nanoparticles are considerably different from the nominal, targeted structures, which can be post facto rationalized in terms of the reactivity of different constituents.

This report addresses the assessment of variation in elastic property of soft biological tissues non-invasively using laser speckle contrast measurement. The experimental as well as the numerical (Monte-Carlo simulation) studies are carried out. In this an intense acoustic burst of ultrasound (an acoustic pulse with high power within standard safety limits), instead of continuous wave, is employed to induce large modulation of the tissue materials in the ultrasound insonified region of interest (ROI) and it results to enhance the strength of the ultrasound modulated optical signal in ultrasound modulated optical tomography (UMOT) system. The intensity fluctuation of speckle patterns formed by interference of light scattered (while traversing through tissue medium) is characterized by the motion of scattering sites. The displacement of scattering particles is inversely related to the elastic property of the tissue. We study the feasibility of laser speckle contrast analysis (LSCA) technique to reconstruct a map of the elastic property of a soft tissue-mimicking phantom. We employ source synchronized parallel speckle detection scheme to (experimentally) measure the speckle contrast from the light traversing through ultrasound (US) insonified tissue-mimicking phantom. The measured relative image contrast (the ratio of the difference of the maximum and the minimum values to the maximum value) for intense acoustic burst is 86.44 % in comparison to 67.28 % for continuous wave excitation of ultrasound. We also present 1-D and 2-D image of speckle contrast which is the representative of elastic property distribution.

The investigation involves preparation and photoluminescence properties of CeO2:Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) nano phosphors by eco-friendly green combustion route using Euphorbia tirucalli plant latex as fuel. The final product was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Scanning electron microcopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PXRD and SEM results reveals cubic fluorite phase with flaky structure. The crystallite size obtained from TEM was found to be similar to 20-25 nm, which was comparable to W-H plots and Scherrer's method. Photoluminescence (PL) emission of all the Eu3+ doped samples shows characteristic bands arising from the transitions of D-5(0) -> F-5(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) manifolds under excitation at 373 and 467 nm excitation. The D-5(0) -> F-7(2) (613 nm) transition often dominate the emission spectra, indicating that the Eu3+ cations occupy a site without inversion center. The highest PL intensity was recorded for 9 mol% Eu3+ ions with 5 ml latex. PL quenching was observed upon further increase in Eu3+ concentration. The international commission on illumination (CIE) chromaticity co-ordinates were calculated from emission spectra, the values (x, y) were very close to national television system committee (NTSC) standard values of pure red emission. The results demonstrate that the synthesized phosphor material could be very useful for display applications. Further, the phosphor material prepared by this method was found to be non toxic, environmental friendly and could be a potential alternative to economical routes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. ZnO:Eu (0.1 mol%) nanopowders have been synthesized by auto ignition based low temperature solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns confirm the nanosized particles which exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's formula was found to be in the range 35-39 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies reveal particles are agglomerated with quasi-hexagonal morphology. A blue shift of absorption edge with increase in band gap is observed for Eu doped ZnO samples. Upon 254 nm excitation, ZnO:Eu nanopowders show peaks in regions blue (420-484 nm), green (528 nm) and red (600 nm) which corresponds to both Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g= 4.195 which is attributed to Eu2+ ions. Further, EPR and thermo-luminescence (TL) studies reveal presence of native defects in this phosphor. Using TL glow peaks the trap parameters have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. We report inelastic light scattering studies on Ca(Fe0.97Co0.03)(2)As-2 in a wide spectral range of 120-5200 cm(-1) from 5 to 300 K, covering the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition as well as magnetic transition at T-sm similar to 160 K. The mode frequencies of two first-order Raman modes B-1g and E-g, both involving the displacement of Fe atoms, show a sharp increase below T-sm. Concomitantly, the linewidths of all the first-order Raman modes show anomalous broadening below T-sm, attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling. The high frequency modes observed between 400 and 1200 cm(-1) are attributed to electronic Raman scattering involving the crystal field levels of d-orbitals of Fe2+. The splitting between xz and yz d-orbital levels is shown to be similar to 25 meV, which increases as temperature decreases below T-sm. A broad Raman band observed at similar to 3200 cm(-1) is assigned to two-magnon excitation of the itinerant Fe 3d antiferromagnet.

Sessile droplets on a vibrating substrate are investigated focusing on axisymmetric oscillations with pinned contact line. Proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to identify the different modes of droplet shape oscillation and quantitatively assess the droplet oscillation and spectral response. We offer the first experimental evidence for the analogy of an oscillating sessile droplet with a non-linear spring mass damper system. The qualitative and quantitative agreement of amplitude response and phase response curves and limit cycles of the model dynamical system with that observed experimentally suggest that the bulk oscillations in the fundamental mode of a sessile droplet can be very well modeled by a Duffing oscillator with a hard spring, especially near the resonance. The red shift of the resonance peak with an increase in the glycerol concentration is clearly evidenced by both the experimental and predicted amplitude response curves. The influence of various operational parameters such as excitation frequency and amplitude and fluid properties on the droplet oscillation characteristics is adequately captured by the model. This paper proposes a novel experimental test procedure to estimate the reliability of structural dynamical systems under excitations specified via random process models. The samples of random excitations to be used in the test are modified by the addition of an artificial control force. An unbiased estimator for the reliability is derived based on measured ensemble of responses under these modified inputs based on the tenets of Girsanov transformation. The control force is selected so as to reduce the sampling variance of the estimator. The study observes that an acceptable choice for the control force can be made solely based on experimental techniques and the estimator for the reliability can be deduced without taking recourse to mathematical model for the structure under study. This permits the proposed procedure to be applied in the experimental study of time-variant reliability of complex structural systems that are difficult to model mathematically. Illustrative example consists of a multi-axes shake table study on bending-torsion coupled, geometrically non-linear, five-storey frame under uni/bi-axial, non-stationary, random base excitation. It is well known that graphene, by virtue of its pi-cloud delocalization, has a continuum of electronic energy states and thus behaves nearly like a metal. Instances involving quenching of electronic energy excitation in fluorophores placed in the proximity of graphene sheets are well documented. In this paper, we perform theoretical investigations on the broadening of vibrational and electronic transitions in the vicinity of graphene. We find that for CO vibrations in the vicinity of undoped graphene, the broadening at a distance of 5 angstrom is similar to 0.008 cm(-1)((kappa) over tilde = 2, (kappa) over tilde being the effective dielectric constant). In comparison, for electronic transitions, the linewidth is much larger, being of the order of several cm(-1). Also, if the transition dipole were parallel to the graphene sheet, the linewidth would be reduced to half the value for the case where it is perpendicular, an observation which should be easy to check experimentally for electronic transitions. This should be observable for the f - f transitions (which are rather narrow) of Lanthanide complexes placed within a distance of a few nanometers from a graphene sheet. Further the linewidth would have a (distance)(-4) dependence as one varies the distance from graphene. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
