Experimental results of the temperature dependence of the nonlinear optical response of methyl red doped polymethylmethacrylate films in the range 20°C to 170°C are reported. It is found that the intensity of the phase conjugate signal resulting from degenerate four-wave mixing using pump and probe beams with parallel polarisation states increases dramatically on heating by a factor of ∼ 10, reaching a maximum at ∼ 100°C. The intensity of the phase conjugate signal for the case with crossed polarisation states of the pump and probe beams drops monotonically with increasing temperature. For both configurations the response time shortens with increasing temperature. The particular role of the polymer matrix in this temperature variation of the nonlinear optical response is discussed.

Near-perfect vector phase conjugation was achieved at 488 nm in a methyl red dye impregnated polymethylmethacrylate film by employing a temperature tuning technique. Using a degenerate four-wave mixing geometry with vertically polarized counterpropagating pump beams, intensity and polarization gratings were written in the dye/polymer system using a vertically or horizontally polarized weak probe beam. Over a limited temperature range, as the sample was heated, the probe reflectivity from the polarization grating dropped but the reflectivity from the intensity grating rose sharply. At a sample temperature of approximately 50°C, the reflectivities of the gratings were measured to be equal and we confirmed that, at this temperature, the measured vector phase conjugate fidelity was very close to unity. We discuss a possible explanation of this effect.

The authors have studied the adsorption of CuII(hfac)2 on the surface of a model oxide system, TiO2(110), and probed the molecular stability with respect to thermal cycling, using atomic scale imaging by scanning tunneling microscopy supported by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. They find that at 473 K, the adsorbed metal-organic molecules begin to dissociate and release Cu atoms which aggregate and form Cu nanoparticles. These Cu nanoparticles ripen over time and the size (height) distribution develops into a bimodal distribution. Unlike other organometallic systems, which show a bimodal distribution due to enhanced nucleation or growth at surface step edges, the nanoparticles do not preferentially form at steps. The reduced mobility of the Cu islands may be related to the co-adsorbed ligands that remain in very small clusters on the surface.

The development of novel molecules for the creation of nanometer structures with specific properties has been the current interest of this research. We have developed a set of molecules from hydrophobic omega- and alpha-amino acids by protecting the -NH(2) with Boc (t-butyloxycarbonyl) group and -CO(2)H with para-nitroanilide such as BocHN-Xx-CONH-(p-NO(2))center dot C(6)H(4), where Xx is gamma-aminobutyric acid (gamma-Abu), (L)-isoleucine, alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, proline, etc. These molecules generate various nanometer structures, such as nanofibrils, nanotubes and nanovesicles, in methanol/water through the self-assembly of bilayers in which the nitro benzene moieties are stacked in the middle and the Boc-protected amino acids parts are packed in the outer surface. The bilayers can be further stacked one over the other through hydrophobic interactions to form multilayer structure, which helps to generate different kinds of nanoscopic structures. The formation of the nanostructures has been facilitated through the participation of various noncovalent interactions, such as hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding and aromatic p-stacking interactions. Fluorescence microscopy and UV studies reveal that the nanovesicles generated from pro-based molecule can encapsulate dye molecules which can be released by addition of acid (at pH 2). These single amino acid based molecules are both easy to synthesize and cost-effective and therefore offer novel scaffolds for the future design of nanoscale structures.

Understanding the interaction of organic molecules with TiO2 surfaces is important for a wide range of technological applications. While density functional theory (DFT) calculations can provide valuable insight about these interactions, traditional DFT approaches with local exchange-correlation functionals suffer from a poor description of non-bonding van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We examine here the contribution of vdW forces to the interaction of small organic molecules (methane, methanol, formic acid and glycine) with the TiO2 (110) surface, based on DFT calculations with the optB88-vdW functional. The adsorption geometries and energies at different configurations were also obtained in the standard generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) for comparison. We find that the optB88-vdW consistently gives shorter surface adsorbate-to-surface distances and slightly stronger interactions than PBE for the weak (physisorbed) modes of adsorption. In the case of strongly adsorbed (chemisorbed) molecules both functionals give similar results for the adsorption geometries, and also similar values of the relative energies between different chemisorption modes for each molecule. In particular both functionals predict that dissociative adsorption is more favourable than molecular adsorption for methanol, formic acid and glycine, in general agreement with experiment. The dissociation energies obtained from both functionals are also very similar, indicating that vdW interactions do not affect the thermodynamics of surface deprotonation. However, the optB88-vdW always predicts stronger adsorption than PBE. The comparison of the methanol adsorption energies with values obtained from a Redhead analysis of temperature programmed desorption data suggests that optB88-vdW significantly overestimates the adsorption strength, although we warn about the uncertainties involved in such comparisons.

Photosensitized oxidation of guanine is an important route to DNA damage. Ruthenium polypyridyls are very useful photosensitizers as their reactivity and DNA-binding properties are readily tunable. Here we show a strong difference in the reactivity of the two enantiomers of [Ru(TAP)2(dppz)]2+, by using time-resolved visible and IR spectroscopy. This reveals that the photosensitized one-electron oxidation of guanine in three oligonucleotide sequences proceeds with similar rates and yields for bound delta-[Ru(TAP)2(dppz)]2+, whereas those for the lambda enantiomer are very sensitive to base sequence. It is proposed that these differences are due to preferences of each enantiomer for different binding sites in the duplex.

To investigate the allergic reaction in neonatal streptozotocin (nSTZ)-induced diabetes mellitus. Male newborn Wistar rats were made diabetic by the injection of streptozotocin (160 mg/kg, i. p.) and used 8 weeks thereafter. Animals were sensitized against ovalbumin (OA, 50 mu g and Al(OH)3, 5 mg, s. c.) and challenged 14 or 21 days thereafter. OA-induced airway inflammation and OA-induced pleurisy models were used to investigate leukocyte migration (total and differential leukocyte counts) and lung vascular permeability (Evans blue dye extravasation). nSTZ-diabetic rats presented glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. Relative to controls, nSTZ rats exhibited a 30% to 50% reduction in lung vascular permeability. Leukocyte infiltration in both models of allergen-induced inflammation, and number of pleural mast cells did not differ between groups. Data suggest that the reduction of allergic inflammatory reactions in nSTZ rats is restricted to microvascular dysfunctions and associated, probably, with insulin resistance in lung microvascular endothelium.

The aim of this paper is to report the sensitization of the TL peak appearing at 270 degrees C in the glow curve of natural quartz by using the combined effect of heat-treatments and irradiation with high gamma doses. For this, thirty discs with 6 x 1 mm(2) were prepared from plates parallell to a rhombolledral crystal face. The specimens were separated into four lots according to its TL read out between 160 and 320 degrees C. One lot was submitted to gamma doses of Co-60 radiation starting at 2 kGy and going up until a cumulative dose of 25 kGy. The other three lots were initially heal-treated at 500, 800 and 1000 degrees C and then irradiated with a single dose of 25kGy. The TL response of each lot was determined as a function of test-doses ranging from 0.1 to 30 mGy. As a result, it was observed that heat-treatments themselves did not produce the strong peak at 270 degrees C that was observed after the administration of high gamma doses. This peak is associated with the optical absorption band appearing at 470 rim which is due to the formation of [AlO4]degrees acting as electron-hole recombination centers. The formation of the 270 degrees C peak was preliminary analyzed in relation to aluminum- and oxygen-vacancy-related centers found in crystalline quartz. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A reliable and fast sensor for in vitro evaluation of solar protection factors (SPFs) of cosmetic products, based on the photobleaching kinetics of a nanocrystalline TiO(2)/dye UV-dosimeter, has been devised. The accuracy, robustness and suitability of the new device was demonstrated by the excellent matching of the predicted and the in vivo results up to SPF 70, for four standard samples analyzed in blind. These results strongly suggest that our device can be useful for routine SPF evaluation in laboratories devoted to the development or production of cosmetic formulations, since the conventional in vitro methods tend to exhibit unacceptably high errors above SPF similar to 30 and the conventional in vivo methods tend to be expensive and exceedingly time consuming. Carra sawdust pretrated with formaldehyde was used to adsorb RR239 (reactive azo dye) at varying pH and zerovalent iron (ZVI) dosage. Modeling of kinetic results shows that sorption process is best described by the pseudo-second-order model. Batch experiments suggest that the decolorization efficiency was strongly enhanced with the presence of ZVI and low solution pH. The kinetics of dye sorption by mixed sorbent (5 g of sawdust and 180 mg of ZVI) at pH 2.0 was rapid, reaching more than 90% of the total discoloration in three minutes.

Benzene adsorbed on highly acidic sulfated TiO2 (S-TiO2) shows an intriguing resonance Raman (RR) effect, with excitation in the blue-violet region. There are very interesting spectral features: the preferential enhancement of the e(2g) mode (1595 cm(-1)) in relation to the a(1g) mode (ring-breathing mode at 995 cm(-1)) and the appearance of bands at 1565 and 1514 cm(-1). The band at 1565 cm(-1) is probably one of the components of the e(2g) split band, originally a doubly degenerate mode (8a, 8b) in neat benzene, and the band at 1514 cm(-1) is assigned to the 19a mode, an inactive mode in neat benzene. These facts indicate a lowering of symmetry in adsorbed benzene, which may be caused by a strong interaction between S-TiO2 and the benzene molecule with formation of a benzene to Ti (IV) charge transfer (CT) complex or by the formation of a benzene radical cation species. However, the RR spectra of the adsorbed benzene cannot be assigned to the benzene radical cation because the observed wavenumber of the ring-breathing mode does not have the value expected for this species. Moreover, it was found by ESR measurements that the amount of radicals was very low, and so it was concluded that a CT complex is the species that originates the RR spectra. The most favorable intensification of the band at 1595 cm(-1) in the RR spectra of benzene/S-TiO2 at higher excitation energy corroborates this hypothesis, as an absorption band in this energy range, assigned to a CT transition, is observed. Two techniques, namely UV-vis- and FTIR spectroscopy, have been employed in order to calculate the degree of substitution (DS) of cellulose carboxylic esters, including acetates, CAs, butyrates, CBs, and hexanoates, CHs. Regarding UV-vis spectroscopy, we have employed a novel approach, based on measuring the dependence of lambda(max) of the intra-molecular charge-transfer bands of polarity probes adsorbed on DS of the ester films (solvatochromism). Additionally, we have revisited the use of FTIR for DS determination. Several methods have been used in order to plot Beer`s law graph, namely: Absorption of KBr pellets, pre-coated with CA: reflectance (DRIFTS) of CAs-KBr solid-solid mixtures with, or without the use of 1.4-dicyanobenzene as an internal reference; reflectance of KBr powder pre-coated with CA. The methods indicated are simple, fast, and accurate, requiring much less ester than the titration method. The probe method is independent of the experimental variables examined. The adsorption of the diazo dye Direct Red 23 onto a zinc oxide surface at 30 degrees C in the dark was investigated. The color reduction was monitored by spectrophotometry at 503 run. The FTIR and Raman spectra of the Direct Red 23 adsorption as a function of ZnO concentration were registered. From the PM3 semi-empirical calculations of the atomic charge density and dipole moment of the Direct Red 23 molecule, it was demonstrated that the azo, dye molecule may be adsorbed onto the ZnO Surface through molecule geometry modifications, enhancing the interfacial area causing a variation in the bonding frequencies. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) films grown on the titanium substrate were used to study the electrochemical degradation of Reactive Orange (RO) 16 Dye. The films were produced by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique using two different boron concentrations. The growth parameters were controlled to obtain heavily doped diamond films. They were named as E1 and E2 electrodes, with acceptor concentrations of 4.0 and 8.0 x 10(21) atoms cm(-3), respectively. The boron levels were evaluated from Mott-Schottky plots also corroborated by Raman`s spectra, which characterized the film quality as well as its physical property. Scanning Electron Microscopy showed well-defined microcrystalline grain morphologies with crystal orientation mixtures of (1 1 1) and (1 00). The electrode efficiencies were studied from the advanced oxidation process (AOP) to degrade electrochemically the Reactive Orange 16 azo-dye (RO16). The results were analyzed by UV/VIS spectroscopy, total organic carbon (TOC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques. From UV/VIS spectra the highest doped electrode (E2) showed the best efficiency for both, the aromaticity reduction and the azo group fracture. These tendencies were confirmed by the TOC and chromatographic measurements. Besides, the results showed a direct relationship among the BDD morphology, physical property, and its performance during the degradation process. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Triplet-excited riboflavin ((3)RF*) was found by laser flash photolysis to be quenched by polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters in tert-butanol/water (7:3, v/v) in a second-order reaction with k similar to 3.0 x 10(5) L mol(-1) s(-1) at 25 degrees C for methyl linoleate and 3.1 x 10(6) L mol(-1) s(-1), with Delta H double dagger = 22.6 kJ mol(-1) and Delta S double dagger = -62.3 J K(-1) mol(-1), for methyl linolenate in acetonitrile/water (8:2, v/v). For methyl oleate, k was <10(4) L mol(-1) s(-1). For comparison, beta-casein was found to have a rate constant k similar to 4.9 x 10(8) L mol(-1) s(-1). Singlet-excited flavin was not quenched by the esters as evidenced by insensitivity of steady-state fluorescence to their presence. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that electron transfer from unsaturated fatty acid esters to triplet-excited flavins is endergonic, while a formal hydrogen atom transfer is exergonic (Delta G(HAT)degrees = -114.3, -151.2, and -151.2 kJ mol(-1) for oleate, linoleate, and linolenate, respectively, in acetonitrile). The reaction is driven by acidity of the lipid cation radical for which a pK(a) similar to -0.12 was estimated by DFT calculations. Absence of electrochemical activity in acetonitrile during cyclic voltammetry up to 2.0 V versus NHE confirmed that Delta G(ET)degrees > 0 for electron transfer. Interaction of methyl esters with (3)RF* is considered as initiation of the radical chain, which is subsequently propagated by combination reactions with residual oxygen. In this respect, carbon-centered and alkoxyl radicals were detected using the spin trapping technique in combination with electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Moreover, quenching of 3RF* yields, directly or indirectly, radical species which are capable of initiating oxidation in unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters. Still, deactivation of triplet-excited flavins by lipid derivatives was slower than by proteins (factor up to 10(4)), which react preferentially by electron transfer. Depending on the reaction environment in biological systems (including food), protein radicals are expected to interfere in the mechanism of light-induced lipid oxidation.
