The aim of this contribution is to explore how the recent internationalization and the increasing importance of 'cosmopolitan capital' has impacted on the structure and character of the field of the Swiss business elite. For this purpose we will develop the notion of cosmopolitan capital and comparatively investigate the field of the Swiss business elite in 1980, 2000 and 2010 with multiple correspondence analysis. We can show that in this period international managers with transnational careers and networks not only grow in number, but come to conquer the apex of the biggest and highest capitalized Swiss firms. At the same time, national forms of capital decline in importance and Swiss managers themselves are differentiated increasingly into national and international fractions.

- Despite the fact that several studies have highlighted associations between psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), few have used adequate somatic, biological and psychiatric measures. To determine potential mechanisms implicated in these associations, several studies have assessed the relationship between psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs), such as overweight, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, physical inactivity and smoking. Moreover, biomarkers such as metabolic regulators, hepatic and inflammatory markers, which could be associated with both psychiatric disorders and CVRFs, have been studied yielding contradictory results. Based on a population-based sample from the city of Lausanne and using adequate somatic and psychiatric investigations, this dissertation encompasses two articles: the first studies the associations between major psychiatric disorders established for lifetime and CVRFs; the second studies the associations between certain biomarkers and the development of type 2 diabetes. Using standardized contemporary methodology in a sample composed of 3716 individuals aged from 35 to 66 years, the first article revealed associations between 1) the atypical depression subtype and an increased risk of several CVRFs (overweight, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome) in contrast to other depression subtypes; 2) alcohol disorders and an increased risk of diabetes and dyslipidemia; 3) almost all psychiatric disorders and a lifetime history of regular cigarette smoking. The second article showed, among the various biomarkers tested, that only lower levels of adiponectin (a hormone produced by adiposity which affects sensitivity to insulin) were associated with an increased risk of subsequent type 2 diabetes. Our results highlight the need for specialists to subtype depression when studying the cardiovascular risk and to pay particular attention to the atypical subtype. A comorbid alcohol misuse may further increase the cardiovascular risk. Moreover, efforts to diminish smoking in subjects suffering from psychiatric disorders could be an important tool for preventing subsequent CVD. The role of adiponectin in the association between psychiatric disorders and CVRFs should still be elucidated, and future analyses should focus in particular on the relationship between this biomarker and atypical depression.

Communities of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were surveyed in different South Australian ecosystems. The soil was wet-sieved for spore extraction, followed by the determination of presence and abundance of AMF species as well as the percentage of root colonization. Mycorrhizal associations were common and there was substantial fungal diversity in different ecosystems. Spores were most abundant in the permanent pasture system and less abundant under continuous wheat. The incidence of mycorrhizal associations in different plant species and the occurrence of Arum and Paris type colonization generally conformed with previous information. Spores of seventeen AMF were verified throughout seasonal changes in 1996 and 1997 in the permanent pasture and on four host species (Lolium perenne, Plantago lanceolata, Sorghum sp. and Trifolium subterraneum) , set up with the same soils under greenhouse conditions. Glomus mosseae was the dominant spore type at all sampling times and in all trap cultures. Mycorrhizal diversity was significantly affected by different sampling times in trap cultures but not in field-collected soil. P. lanceolata, Sorghum sp. and T. subterraneum as hosts for trap cultures showed no differences in richness and diversity of AMF spores that developed in association with their roots. Abundance and diversity were lowest, however, in association with L. perenne , particularly in December 1996. Results show that the combination of spore identification from field-collected soil and trap cultures is essential to study population and diversity of AMF. The study provides baseline data for ongoing monitoring of mycorrhizal populations using conventional methods and material for the determination of the symbiotic effectiveness of AMF key members.
