An 18 million year record of the Ca isotopic composition (d44/42Ca) of planktonic foraminiferans from ODP site 925, in the Atlantic, on the Ceara Rise, provides the opportunity for critical analysis of Ca isotope-based reconstructions of the Ca cycle. ?44/42Ca in this record averages +0.37+/-0.05 (1 sigma SD) and ranges from +0.21? to +0.52?. The record is a good match to previously published Neogene Ca isotope records based on foraminiferans, but is not similar to the record based on bulk carbonates, which has values that are as much as 0.25? lower. Bulk carbonate and planktonic foraminiferans from core tops differ slightly in their d44/42Ca (i.e., by 0.06+/-0.06? (n = 5)), while the difference between bulk carbonate and foraminiferan values further back in time is markedly larger, leaving open the question of the cause of the difference. Modeling the global Ca cycle from downcore variations in d44/42Ca by assuming fixed values for the isotopic composition of weathering inputs (d44/42Ca_w) and for isotope fractionation associated with the production of carbonate sediments (D_sed) results in unrealistically large variations in the total mass of Ca2+ in the oceans over the Neogene. Alternatively, variations of +/-0.05? in the Ca isotope composition of weathering inputs or in the extent of fractionation of Ca isotopes during calcareous sediment formation could entirely account for variations in the Ca isotopic composition of marine carbonates. Ca isotope fractionation during continental weathering, such as has been recently observed, could easily result in variations in d44/42Ca_w of a few tenths of permil. Likewise a difference in the fractionation factors associated with aragonite versus calcite formation could drive shifts in D_sed of tenths of permil with shifts in the relative output of calcite and aragonite from the ocean. Until better constraints on variations in d44/42Ca_w and D_sed have been established, modeling the Ca2+ content of seawater from Ca isotope curves should be approached cautiously.

From July 4 to 18,1995 surface chlorophyll a concentrations (C_cs) and integral primary production (C_ps) were studied in the northeastern part of the Norwegian Sea (73°42'N; 13°16'E), over a test area where an accident of the nuclear submarine Komsomolets had taken place. It was found that during this interval C_cs decreased by factor of about 3.3 (from 0.78 to 0.24 mg/m**3); average chlorophyll concentration within the photo-synthetic layer (C_cl) decreased by factor of about 3.5 (from 0.97 to 0.28 mg/m**3). The value of C_ps in the water column varied slightly (from 445 to 539 mg C/m**2 per day), since decrease in C_cl was compensated both by 1.5-fold growth of the photosynthetic layer thickness (from 40 to 60 m) and by 2.1-fold increase in its average assimilation number (from 0.58 to 1.20 mg C/mg chl a per hour). Monthly averages of C_ps were obtained from published data on seasonal C_cs changes and on the level of incident solar irradiation. They were found to be less than 100 mg C/m**2 per day in March and October and 100-500 mg C/m**2 per day in April-June. Annual primary production calculated from above values was equal to 105 g C/m**2.

We present Pleistocene oxygen and carbon isotope records from two planktonic foraminifer species (Globigerinoides sacculifer and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei) from Ocean Drilling Program Site 847 (0°16'N, 95°19'W; 3334 m water depth). An average sample resolution of 4500 yr was obtained by sampling at an interval of 15 cm through a continuous 35-m section from 0 to 1.15 Ma. Our d18O-based chronology is similar to that derived independently by astronomically tuning the gamma-ray attenuation porosity evaluator (GRAPE) record (Shackleton et al., 1995), though offsets as large as ± 30 k.y. occur on occasion. The surface waters at eastern equatorial Pacific Site 847, 380 km west of the Galapagos, are characterized by strong and constant upwelling, elevated nutrient concentrations, and high productivity. The isotopic composition of G. sacculifer (300-355 µm) reflects conditions in the thin-surface mixed layer, and the composition of N. dutertrei (355-425 µm) monitors the subsurface waters of the permanent shallow (10-40 m) thermocline. The Pleistocene d18O difference (N. dutertrei minus G. sacculifer, Dd18Od-s) averages 0.9 per mil and ranges from 0 per mil to 1.7 per mil. Neglecting species effects and shell size, the average Pleistocene d13C difference (G. sacculifer minus N. dutertrei, Dd13Cs-d) is 0.0 per mil and ranges from -0.5 per mil to 0.5 per mil. The Dd18Od-s and Dd13Cs-d records are used to infer vertical contrasts in upper ocean water temperature and nutrient concentration, though d13C may also be influenced by other factors, such as CO2 gas exchange. Variations in the isotopic differences are often synchronous with glacial/interglacial climate change. Glacial periods are characterized by smaller vertical contrasts in both temperature and nutrient concentration, and by notably greater accumulation rates of N. dutertrei and CaCO3. We attribute these responses to greater upwelling at the equatorial divergence. Superimposed on the glacial/interglacial Dd18Od-s pattern is a long-term trend possibly associated with the advection of Peru Current waters. The temporal fluctuations in the isotopic contrasts are strikingly similar to those observed at Site 851 (Ravelo and Shackleton, this volume), suggesting that the inferred changes in thermal and chemical profiles occurred over a broad region in the equatorial Pacific.

This database (Leemans & Cramer 1991) contains monthly averages of mean temperature, temperature range, precipitation, rain days and sunshine hours for the terrestrial surface of the globe, gridded at 0.5 degree longitude/latitude resolution. All grd-files contain the same 62483 pixels in the same order, with 30' latitude and longitude resolution. The coordinates are in degree-decimals and indicate the SW corner of each pixel. Topography is from ETOPO5 and indicates modal elevation. Data were generated from a large data base, using the partial thin-plate splining algorithm (Hutchinson & Bischof 1983). This version is widely used around the globe, notably by all groups participating in the IGBP NPP model intercomparison.

We report mineral chemistry, whole-rock major element compositions, and trace element analyses on Hole 735B samples drilled and selected during Leg 176. We discuss these data, together with Leg 176 shipboard data and Leg 118 sample data from the literature, in terms of primary igneous petrogenesis. Despite mineral compositional variation in a given sample, major constituent minerals in Hole 735B gabbroic rocks display good chemical equilibrium as shown by significant correlations among Mg# (= Mg/[Mg + Fe2+]) of olivine, clinopyroxene, and orthopyroxene and An (=Ca/[Ca + Na]) of plagioclase. This indicates that the mineral assemblages olivine + plagioclase in troctolite, plagioclase + clinopyroxene in gabbro, plagioclases + clinopyroxene + olivine in olivine gabbro, and plagioclase + clinopyroxene + olivine + orthopyroxene in gabbronorite, and so on, have all coprecipitated from their respective parental melts. Fe-Ti oxides (ilmenite and titanomagnetite), which are ubiquitous in most of these rocks, are not in chemical equilibrium with olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase, but precipitated later at lower temperatures. Disseminated oxides in some samples may have precipitated from trapped Fe-Ti-rich melts. Oxides that concentrate along shear bands/zones may mark zones of melt coalescence/transport expelled from the cumulate sequence as a result of compaction or filter pressing. Bulk Hole 735B is of cumulate composition. The most primitive olivine, with Fo = 0.842, in Hole 735B suggests that the most primitive melt parental to Hole 735B lithologies must have Mg# 0.637, which is significantly less than Mg# = 0.714 of bulk Hole 735B. This suggests that a significant mass fraction of more evolved products is needed to balance the high Mg# of the bulk hole. Calculations show that 25%-45% of average Eastern Atlantis II Fracture Zone basalt is needed to combine with 55%-75% of bulk Hole 735B rocks to give a melt of Mg# 0.637, parental to the most primitive Hole 735B cumulate. On the other hand, the parental melt with Mg# 0.637 is far too evolved to be in equilibrium with residual mantle olivine of Fo > 0.89. Therefore, a significant mass fraction of more primitive cumulate (e.g., high Mg# dunite and troctolite) is yet to be sampled. This hidden cumulate could well be deep in the lower crust or simply in the mantle section. We favor the latter because of the thickened cold thermal boundary layer atop the mantle beneath slow-spreading ridges, where cooling and crystallization of ascending mantle melts is inevitable. These observations and data interpretation require reconsideration of the popular concept of primary mantle melts and relationships among the extent of mantle melting, melt production, and the composition and thickness of igneous crust.

On a cruise from the eastern into western Mediterranean Sea in November/December 1978 a total of 126 samples were collected from 8 vertical profiles and 7 coastal stations for trace metal analysis. The sampling, processing and analysis was performed under strict "clean room" conditions. The concentration of the open-sea samples are close to oceanic results gathered under similar conditions. The grand averages from all profiles (± st. dev. of the individual samples) of 0.40 ± 0.16 µg/l Zn, 17.4 ± 7.4 ng/l Cd, 0.21 ± 0.07 µg/l Cu, 0.21 ± 0.13 µg/l Mn and 0.25 ± 0.09 µg/l Fe indicate that a "metal problem" does not exist in the open Mediterranean. A biologically mediated deplition in surface waters or correlation with nutrients have not been observed under the conditions established on this cruise. This is probably due top low primary production and seasonal advection processes prevailing in this sea. The data for manganese show generally higher values in the surface layer (0-75 m) than in deep waters. This could evidently proved in the nearshore profile indicating a terrigenous source for manganese.

The nearly continuous recovery of 0.5 km of generally fresh, layer 3 gabbroic rocks at Hole 735B, especially near the bottom of the section, presents scientists an unusual opportunity to study the detailed elastic properties of the lower oceanic crust. Extending compressional-wave and density shipboard measurements at room pressure, Vp and Vs were measured at pressures from 20 to 200 MPa using the pulse transmission method. All of the rocks exhibit significant increases in velocity with increasing pressure up to about 150 MPa, a feature attributed to the closing of microcrack porosity. Measured velocities reflect the mineralogical makeup and microstructures acquired during the tectonic history of Hole 735B. Most of the undeformed and unaltered gabbros are approximately 65:35 plagioclase/clinopyroxene rocks plus olivine or oxide minerals, and the observed densities and velocities are fully consistent with the Voigt-Reuss-Hill (VRH) averages of the component minerals and their proportions. Depending on their olivine content, the predominant olivine gabbros at 200 MPa have average Vp = 7.1 ± 0.2 km/s, Vs = 3.9 ± 0.1 km/s, and grain densities of 2.95 ± 0.5 g/cm3. The less abundant iron-titanium (Fe-Ti) oxide gabbros average Vp = 6.75 ± 0.15 km/s, Vs = 3.70 ± 0.1 km/s, and grain densities of 3.22 ± 0.05 g/cm3, reflecting the higher densities and lower velocities of oxide minerals compared to olivine. About 30% of the core is plastically deformed, and the densities and directionally averaged velocities of these shear-zone tectonites are generally consistent with those of the gabbros, their protoliths. Three sets of observations indicate that the shear-zone metagabbros are elastically anisotropic: (1) directional variations in Vp, both vertical and horizontal and with respect to foliation and lineation; (2) discrepancies among Vp values for the horizontal cores and the VRH averages of the component minerals and their mineral proportions, suggesting preferred crystallographic orientations of anisotropic minerals; and (3) variations of Vs of up to 7%, with polarization directions parallel and perpendicular to foliation. Optical inspection of thin sections of the same samples indicates that plagioclase feldspar, clinopyroxene, and amphibole typically display crystallographic-preferred orientations, and this, plus the elastic anisotropy of these minerals, suggests that preferred orientations are responsible for much of the observed anisotropy, particularly at high pressure. Alteration tends to be localized to brittle faults and brecciated zones, and typical alteration minerals are amphibole and secondary plagioclase, which do not significantly change the velocity-density relationships.

A high-resolution pollen record (sampling interval averages 820 years) has been obtained from ODP Site 1144 (water depth 2037 m), northern South China Sea. The 504-m sequence (in composition length) covers the last 1.03 million years according to micropaleontological and isotopic stratigraphy. The pollen assemblages are characterized by high proportions of Pinus and herb pollen, and by their frequent alternations. Based on these alternations, 29 pollen zones have been recognized that are closely correlated to the Marine Oxygen Isotope Stages (MIS) 1-29. Pinus- dominant pollen zones correspond to interglacial periods with lighter delta18O values, while herb-marked ones relate to the heavier delta18O stages assigned to glacials. Judging from the pollen data, the exposed northern continental shelf of the South China Sea during the glacials was covered by grassland, and the extensive northern shelf has formed only since MIS 6 (ca. 150 ka), probably as a result of tectonic subsidence. Tree pollen influx values are indicative of winter monsoon which began to intensify 600 ka ago. The summer monsoon variations can be approximated by the fern percentage within the total pollen and spore abundance, and the result shows high values in general occurring at interglacials, with the maxima at MIS 15, 5e and 1. The relatively high fern percentage with smaller amplitude in variations before 600 ka might suggest more stable humid conditions before the intensification of winter monsoon.

The Sonne transit cruise SO226-3 DipFIP took place from March 4th (Wellington, New Zealand) to March 28th (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) in 2013. CTD data for 16 stations along the cruise track were recorded using the onboard a SEABIRD SBE 9 plus CTD down to depth of 800m. Obtained hydrographic data were binned to 1 m intervals with the available SBE software. Obvious outliers in the readings of the oxygen sensor close to the sea surface have been manually removed. Fluorospectrometer (bbe Moldaenke) pigment data measured for 24 depth intervals are available for 10 stations. Measurements were conducted in the shipboard laboratory on water samples from the CTD rosette. Data are averages of a least 30 readings per sample.

Sediments at the bottom of Lake Baikal are mostly oxidized at their surface, and the oxidized sedimentary deposits are enriched in Fe and Mn hydroxides. The thickness of the oxidized zone of the pelagic sediments averages at 5 cm and locally reaches 10-15, occasionally exceeding 20 cm. Both the thickness of the oxidized layer and the degree of its enrichment in iron and manganese hydroxides are controlled by the depth to which oxygen can penetrate into the sedimentary deposits, which is, in turn, closely related to the sedimentation conditions in the lake (which broadly vary). The sedimentation rate far off the shores of Lake Baikal ranges from <0.02 mm/year to 1.5 mm/year, and the content of organic matter buried in the sediments varies from 0.1 to >4%. The variability of the sedimentation process makes Lake Baikal very convenient to study its diagenetic processes related to redox reactions in sediments, first of all, processes responsible for the redistribution of Fe and Mn compounds. Although the diagenetic enrichment of Fe and Ni in bottom sediments is known to be of biogenic character, very scarce information is available so far on the microorganisms involved in the redistribution of these elements in sediments in Lake Baikal, which lately led us to explore this issue in detail. Our research was centered on the role played by the microbial community in the diagenetic transformations of Fe and Mn with reference to sedimentation conditions in Lake Baikal.

In pursuance of previous studies water samples were taken in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during the 12th, 14th and 15th cruises of RV Mikhail Lomonosov in 1962-1964 to determine total and particulate organic carbon and permanganate oxidizability. Preliminary processing of the water samples was carried out in the normal manner in the on-board laboratory immediately after they had been taken: destruction of bicarbonates and carbonates by precise addition of acid (by alkalinity) and evaporation to dryness at 50-60°C. It is quite probable that the corresponding volatile fraction of organic matter is lost under these conditions. In discussion it was demonstrated that it may now be assumed that the carbon of the volatile fraction averages approximately 15% of total carbon, i.e., 15% of the sum of organic carbon of the volatile and nonvolatile fractions. Oxidizability was determined in all samples in the on-board laboratory.

Hudson Strait (HS) Heinrich Events, ice-rafting events in the North Atlantic originating from the Laurentide ice sheet (LIS), are among the most dramatic examples of millennial-scale climate variability and have a large influence on global climate. However, it is debated as to whether the occurrence of HS Heinrich Events in the (eastern) North Atlantic in the geological record depends on greater ice discharge, or simply from the longer survival of icebergs in cold waters. Using sediments from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1313 in the North Atlantic spanning the period between 960 and 320 ka, we show that sea surface temperatures (SSTs) did not control the first occurrence of HS Heinrich(-like) Events in the sedimentary record. Using mineralogy and organic geochemistry to determine the characteristics of ice-rafting debris (IRD), we detect the first HS Heinrich(-like) Event in our record around 643 ka (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 16), which is similar as previously reported for Site U1308. However, the accompanying high-resolution alkenone-based SST record demonstrates that the first HS Heinrich(-like) Event did not coincide with low SSTs. Thus, the HS Heinrich(-like) Events do indicate enhanced ice discharge from the LIS at the end of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, not simply the survivability of icebergs due to cold conditions in the North Atlantic.

Values of physical properties measured in the upper sections of sediment cores recovered at Sites 504 and 505 exhibit a remarkable similarity. Below a depth of 145 m Site 504 sediments appear to have undergone changes which are reflected in physical property values. This alteration may have been due to high temperatures in the sediment. In most of Site 505, and in Site 504 above 145 m, seismic velocity averages 1.51 km/s, wet bulk density 1.32 g/cm**3, porosity 80%, and thermal conductivity 0.80% W/m °K. Below 145 m at Site 504 and 210 m at Site 505, mean density increases to 1.40 g/cm**3, porosity decreases to 67%, seismic velocity increases to 1.53 km/s, and thermal conductivity increases to values in excess of 1.0 W/m °K. A good correlation between independent measurements of water content and thermal resistivity supports the existence of small but regular variation in the measured parameters on the scale of 10 m and less.
