The Iowa Communications Network (ICN) is the country’s premier distance learning and state government Network, committed to providing Iowans with convenient, equal access to education, government and healthcare. The Network makes it possible for Iowans, physically separated by location, to interact in an efficient, creative, and cost-effective manner. ICN provides high-speed Internet, data, video conferencing, and voice (phone) services to authorized users, under Code of Iowa, which includes: K-12 schools, higher education, hospitals, state and federal government, National Guard armories, and libraries.

This is a summary of some of the activities the Board was involved with in 2011. More information about the Board’s work is available in the agendas, minutes, reports and press releases on the website, www.medicalboard.iowa.gov, and the Board’s page on Facebook. Much has been accomplished in the past year, but much more remains to be done. The Board looks forward to the many challenges that lie ahead and will continue to strengthen and enhance services to the public and licensees. I am very proud of the staff and Board members and their commitment to excellent service to the citizens of Iowa.

Iowa College Student Aid Commission Annual Report FY 2011

Iowa College Aid connects students and families to the essential resources and services needed to go to college. Staff is available every step of the way to help students plan, prepare, and pay for college. On behalf of the State of Iowa and the General Assembly, Iowa College Aid supports students and families with scholarships, grants, loan forgiveness, informational resources and a range of services that help Iowans prepare for college, as well as assist student loan borrowers through the repayment process.

Iowa College Student Aid Commission Annual Report FY 2010

Fiscal Year 2010 proved to be a year of many challenges. While the nation and the state dealt with an unprecedented economic downturn, a growing number of Iowa families sought assistance to pay higher education costs. The year saw Iowa’s unemployment rate soar to a 23-year high, contributing to a 22 percent increase in enrollment at Iowa’s colleges and universities. An increasing number of Iowans applied for financial aid to pay for college as evidenced by a 47 percent increase in the number of Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completed over the past 5 years. The economic downturn also forced the State to make a 10 percent reduction in all general fund appropriations which reduced the total amount of state-funded financial aid available to assist families.

Iowa Highway Research Board FY 2012 Annual Report

This report, entitled ―Iowa Highway Research Board Research and Development Activities FY2012‖ is submitted in compliance with Sections 310.36 and 312.3A, Code of Iowa, which direct the submission of a report of the Secondary Road Research Fund and the Street Research Fund, respectively. It is a report of the status of research and development projects in progress on June 30, 2012. It is also a report on projects completed during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2011 and ending June 30, 2012. Detailed information on each of the research and development projects mentioned in this report is available from the Office of Research and Analytics, Performance and Technology Division, Iowa Department of Transportation. Iowa Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Annual Report 2012

This year was one of transition for the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman. In December 2011, Deanna Clingan-Fischer, JD, was appointed as the new State Long-Term Care Ombudsman assuming the role from Jeanne Yordi. This report timeframe covers portions of the tenure of each State Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Through the transition, the Office continued to be an effective advocate and resource for persons residing in long-term care facilities, assisted living programs and elder group homes.

This section contains information on population, economic, and social data, providing a comparison between Iowa, other states, and the Nation. Geographic Information System (GIS) maps are presented to allow the reader to easily compare between two or more geographies. In some instances, trends are also reported. Information displayed in this section was obtained from a variety of sources and is noted on each table or figure. In all areas, the most recent data available were used.
