Fueled by their high third-order nonlinearity and nonlinear saturable absorption, carbon nanotubes (CNT) are expected to become an integral part of next-generation photonic devices such as all-optical switches and passive mode-locked lasers. However, in order to fulfill this expectation it is necessary to identify a suitable platform that allows the efficient use of the optical properties of CNT. In this paper, we propose and implement a novel device consisting of an optofluidic device filled with a dispersion of CNT. By fabricating a microchannel through the core of a conventional fiber and filling it with a homogeneous solution of CNTs on Dimethylformamide (DMF), a compact, all-fiber saturable absorber is realized. The fabrication of the micro-fluidic channel is a two-step process that involves femtosecond laser micro-fabrication and chemical etching of the laser-modified regions. All-fiber high-energy, passive mode-locked lasing is demonstrated with an output power of 13.5 dBm. The key characteristics of the device are compactness and robustness against optical, mechanical and thermal damage.

We demonstrate that the use of in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) in dispersion-managed (DM) transmission systems dominated by amplitude noise can achieve passive 2R regeneration of a 40 and 80 Gbit/s RZ data stream. This is an indication that the use of this approach could obviate the need for full-regeneration in high data rate, strong DM systems, when intra-channel four-wave mixing poses serious problems.

In this letter, we numerically demonstrate that the use of inline nonlinear optical loop mirrors in strongly dispersion-managed transmission systems dominated by pulse distortion and amplitude noise can achieve all-optical passive 2R regeneration of a 40-Gb/s return-to-zero data stream. We define the tolerance limits of this result to the parameters of the input pulses.

We propose an all-optical passive 2R regeneration method for WDM (N×40 Gbit/s) dispersion-managed RZ transmission based on specially designed WDM guiding filters and in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors. By system optimisation, the feasibility of 150 GHz-spaced × l6 channel transmission over 25,000 km of standard fibre is numerically demonstrated.

A method of all-optical passive quasi-regeneration in transoceanic 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero transmission systems with strong dispersion management was described. The use of in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLM) by the method was demonstrated. The quasi-regeneration of signals performed by NOLMs was found to improve the systems's performance.

It is numerically demonstrated, for the first time, that dispersion management and in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors can achieve all-optical passive regeneration and distance-unlimited transmission of a soliton data stream at 40 Gbit/s over standard fibre.

All-optical passive regeneration in 40 Gbit/s-based wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) dispersion-managed return-to-zero (RZ) transmission system was discussed. In-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLM) were used. A feasibility of 300 GHz-spaced two channel unlimited transmission and 150 GHz-spaced two channel 25000 km transmission over the standard fiber were found.

Plasmid DNA pRc/CMV HBS encoding the S (small) region of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was incorporated by the dehydration-rehydration method into Lipodine™ liposomes composed of 16 μmoles phosphatidylcholine (PC) or distearoyl phosphatidylcholine (DSPC), 8 μmoles of (dioleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) or cholesterol and 4 μmoles of the cationic lipid 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium propane (DOTAP) (molar ratios 1:0.5:0.25). Incorporation efficiency was high (89-93% of the amount of DNA used) in all four formulations tested and incorporated DNA was shown to be resistant to displacement in the presence of the competing anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate molecules. This is consistent with the notion that most of the DNA is incorporated within the multilamellar vesicles structure rather than being vesicle surface-complexed. Stability studies performed in simulated intestinal media also demonstrated that dehydration-rehydration vesicles (DRV) incorporating DNA (DRV(DNA)) were able to retain significantly more of their DNA content compared to DNA complexed with preformed small unilamellar vesicles (SUV-DNA) of the same composition. Moreover, after 4h incubation in the media, DNA loss for DSPC DRV(DNA) was only minimal, suggesting this to be the most stable formulation. Oral (intragastric) liposome-mediated DNA immunisation studies employing a variety of DRV(DNA) formulations as well as naked DNA revealed that secreted IgA responses against the encoded HBsAg were (as early as three weeks after the first dose) substantially higher after dosing with 100 μg liposome-entrapped DNA compared to naked DNA. Throughout the fourteen week investigation, IgA responses in mice were consistently higher with the DSPC DRV(DNA) liposomes compared to naked DNA and correlated well with their improved DNA retention when exposed to model intestinal fluids. To investigate gene expression after oral (intragastric) administration, mice were given 100 μg of naked or DSPC DRV liposome-entrapped plasmid DNA expressing the enhanced green fluorescent protein (pCMV.EGFP). Expression of the gene, in terms of fluorescence intensity in the draining mesenteric lymph nodes, was much greater in mice dosed with liposomal DNA than in animals dosed with the naked DNA. These results suggest that DSPC DRV liposomes containing DNA (Lipodine™) may be a useful system for the oral delivery of DNA vaccines.

We have proposed and demonstrated a nonlinear polarization-rotation-based fiber laser with two different operation states: passive mode-locking and multiwavelength emission. The intensity-dependent transmission or loss induced by nonlinear polarization rotation accounts for the distinct operation regimes. Our experiment results indicate that both passively mode-locked pulses and continuous-wave multiwavelength can be generated from the same fiber laser just through adjusting polarizations. Another characteristic of the current multiwavelength laser is that the used periodic filter is a birefringence fiber filter, which facilitates all-fiber integration of the fiber laser, so it is a potential multifunction laser source with all-fiber configuration and convenient manipulation. © 2008 IEEE.

The feasibility of stable soliton transmission system was demonstrated using a practical dispersion map in conjunction with in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs). The system's performance was examined at 40 Gbit/s data rate in terms of maximum propagation distance corresponding to a bit error rate of more than 10-9. The bit error rate was estimated by means of the standard Q-factor.
