The first definitive high-resolution single-crystal X-ray structure for the coordination of the 1-methylimidazole (Meimid) ligand to UO2(Ac)2 (Ac = CH3CO2) is reported. The crystal structure evidence is confirmed by IR, Raman, and UV-vis spectroscopic data. Direct participation of the nitrogen atom of the Meimid ligand in binding to the uranium center is confirmed. Structural analysis at the DFT (B3LYP) level of theory showed a conformational difference of the Meimid ligand in the free gas-phase complex versus the solid state due to small energetic differences and crystal packing effects. Energetic analysis at the MP2 level in the gas phase supported stronger Meimid binding over H2O binding to both UO2(Ac)2 and UO2(NO3)2. In addition, self-consistent reaction field COSMO calculations were used to assess the aqueous phase energetics of combination and displacement reactions involving H2O and Meimid ligands to UO2R2 (R = Ac, NO3). For both UO2(NO3)2 and UO2(Ac)2, the displacement of H2O by Meimid was predicted to be energetically favorable, consistent with experimental results that suggest Meimid may bind uranyl at physiological pH. Also, log(Knitrate/KAc) calculations supported experimental evidence that the binding stoichiometry of the Meimid ligand is dependent upon the nature of the reactant uranyl complex. These results clearly demonstrate that imidazole binds to uranyl and suggest that binding of histidine residues to uranyl could occur under normal biological conditions.

Two series of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes [Ru(bipy)2(phpytr)]+ and [Ru(bipy)2(phpztr)]+ (where Hphpytr = 2-(5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine and Hphpztr = 2-(5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyrazine) are examined by electrochemistry, UV/Vis, emission, resonance Raman, transient resonance Raman and transient absorption spectroscopy, in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of their excited state electronic properties. The interpretation of the results obtained is facilitated by the availability of several isotopologues of each of the complexes examined. For the pyridine-1,2,4-triazolato based complex the lowest emissive excited state is exclusively bipy based, however, for the pyrazine based complexes excited state localisation on particular ligands shows considerable solvent and pH dependency.

Research is progressing fast in the field of the hydrogen assisted hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) over Ag-based catalysts: this paper is a review of the work to date in this area. The addition of hydrogen to the HC-SCR reaction feed over Ag/Al2O3 results in a remarkable improvement in NO (x) conversion using a variety of different hydrocarbon feeds. There is some debate concerning the role that hydrogen has to play in the reaction mechanism and its effect on the form of Ag present during the reaction. Many of the studies use in situ UV-Vis spectroscopy to monitor the form of Ag in the catalyst and appear to indicate that the addition of hydrogen promotes the formation of small Ag clusters which are highly reactive for NO (x) conversion. However, some authors have expressed concern about the use of this technique for these materials and further work is required to address these issues before this technique can be used to give an accurate assessment of the state of Ag during the SCR reaction. A study using in situ EXAFS to probe the H-2 assisted octane-SCR reaction has shown that small Ag particles (containing on average 3 silver atoms) are formed during the SCR reaction but that the addition of H-2 to the feed does not result in any further change in the Ag particle size. This points to the direct involvement of H-2 in the reaction mechanism. Clearly the addition of hydrogen results in a large increase in the number and variety of adsorbed species on the surface of the catalyst during the reaction. Some authors have suggested that conversion of cyanide to isocyanate is the rate-determining step and that hydrogen promotes this conversion. Others have suggested that hydrogen reduces nitrates to more reactive nitrite species which can then activate the hydrocarbon; activation of the hydrocarbon to form acetates has been proposed as the key step. It is probable that all these promotional effects can take place and that it very much depends on the reaction temperature and feed conditions as to which one is most important.

Heterogeneous immobilized ionic liquid catalysts were prepared via grafting of 1,3-dimethyl-3-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate or bist{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide ([NTf2](-)) on silica supports with different surfaces and pore size. In addition to the adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen at -196C, the catalysts were characterized by TG-DTA, XPS, DRIFTS, DR-UV-vis, NMR, and XRD techniques. The catalytic behavior was checked in the acylation of three different sulfonamines: benzenesulfonamine, p-nitrobenzene-sulfonamine, and p-methoxybenzene-sulfonamine with acetic acid, acetic anhydride and maleic anhydride. These tests confirmed the acid Lewis properties of these catalysts. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The nature of the silver phases of Ag/Al2O3 catalysts (prepared by silver nitrate impregnation followed by calcination) was investigated by X-ray diffractograms (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-VIS analyses and related to the activity of the corresponding materials for the oxidation of NO to NO2. The UV-VIS spectrum of the 1.2 wt.% Ag/Al2O3 exhibited essentially one band associated with Ag+ species and the NO2 yields measured over this material were negligible. A 10 wt.% Ag/Al2O3 material showed the presence of oxidic species of silver (as isolated Ag+ cations and silver aluminate), but the UV-VIS data also revealed the presence of some metallic silver. The activity for the NO oxidation to NO2 of this sample was moderate. The same 10% sample either reduced in H-2 or used for the C3H6-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO showed a significantly larger proportion of silver metallic phases and these samples displayed a high activity for the formation of NO2. These data show that the structure and nature of the silver phases of Ag/Al2O3 catalysts can markedly change under reaction feed containing only a fraction of reducing agent (i.e. 500 ppm of propene) in net oxidizing conditions (2.5% O-2). The low activity for N-2 formation during the C3H6-SCR of NO (reported in an earlier study) over the high loading sample can. therefore, he related to the presence of metallic silver. which is yet a good catalyst for NO oxidation to NO2. The reverse observations apply for the oxide species observed over the low loading sample, which is a good SCR catalyst but do not oxidize NO to NO2. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The substituted tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes {[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+) and [Ru(bpy)(2)(5,5'-bbob)](2+) [where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and bbob = bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine] have been prepared and compared to the previously studied complex [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbtb)](2+) [where bbtb = bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine]. From the UV/VIS titration studies, Delta-[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'bbob)](2+) displays a stronger association than the Lambda-isomer with calf-thymus DNA (ct-DNA). For [Ru(bpy)(2)(5,5'-bbob)](2+), there appears to be minimal interaction with ct-DNA. The results of fluorescence titration studies suggest that [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+) gives an increase in emission intensity with increasing ct-DNA concentrations, with an enantiopreference for the A isomer, confirmed by membrane dialysis studies. The fluorescent intercalation displacement studies revealed that [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+) and [Ru.(bpy)(2)(5,5'bbob)](2+) display a preference for more open DNA structures such as bulge and hairpin sequences. While Delta-[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbtb)](2+) has shown the most significant affinity for all the oligonucleotides sequences screened in previous studies, it is the A isomer of the comparable benzoxazole ruthenium(II) complex (Delta-[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+)) that preferentially binds to DNA.

KF, LiF and CsF/A(2)O(3) catalysts with different loadings from 1 to 20 wt% were prepared using aqueous solutions of the alkaline fluoride compounds by wet impregnation of basic mesoporous MSU-type alumina. The catalysts were activated under At at 400 degrees C for 2 h and monitored by in situ XRD measurements. The catalysts were also characterized using several techniques: N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at -196 degrees C, FTIR, DR-UV-vis, CO2-TPD, XRD, Al-27 CP/MAS NMR. These characterizations led to the conclusion that the deposition of alkaline fluorides on the alumina surface generates fluoroaluminates and aluminate species. The process is definitivated at 400 degrees C. The fluorine in these structures is less basic than in the parent fluorides, but the oxygen becomes more basic. The catalysts were tested for the transesterification of fatty esters under different experimental conditions using conventional heating, microwave and Ultrasound irradiation. Recycling experiments showed that these catalysts are stable for a limited number of cycles. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The complex formed by the reaction of the uranyl ion, UO22+, with bromide ions in the ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Bmiml[Tf2N]) and methyl-tributylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([MeBu3N][Tf2N]) has been investigated by UV-Vis and U L-III-edge EXAFS spectroscopy and compared to the crystal structure of [Bmim](2)[UO2Br4]. The solid state reveals a classical tetragonal bipyramid geometry for [UO2Br4](2-) with hydrogen bonds between the Bmim(+) and the coordinated bromides. The UV-Vis spectroscopy reveals the quantitative formation of [UO2Br4](2-) when a stoichiometric amount of bromide ions is added to UO2(CF3SO3)(2) in both Tf2N-based ionic liquids. The absorption spectrum also suggests a D-4h symmetry for [UO2Br4](2-) in ionic liquids, as previously observed for the [UO2Cl4](2-) congener. EXAFS analysis supports this conclusion and demonstrates that the [UO2Br4](2-) coordination polyhedron is maintained in the ionic liquids without any coordinating solvent or water molecules. The mean U-O and U-Br distances in the solutions, determined by EXAFS, are, respectively, 1.766(2) and 2.821(2)angstrom in [Bmim][Tf2N], and, respectively, 1.768(2) and 2.827(2) angstrom, in [MeBu3N][Tf2N]. Similar results are obtained in both ionic liquids indicating no significant influence of the ionic liquid cation either on the complexation reaction or on the structure of the uranyl species. Ionic liquids are often contaminated by colored impurities. These impurities can be problematic for spectroscopic studies or for monitoring organic reactions by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The effect of different purification methods on the optical quality of colored ionic liquids was studied and compared. Yellowish ionic liquids can partially be decolorized by treatment with active charcoal or by recrystallization. Our experiments show column liquid chromatography is not always a good technique to prepare spectrograde imidazolium halide ionic liquids. Colorless and UV-transparent ionic liquids were synthesized by a method that can exclude the need for further purification steps. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ceria (CeO2) is a technologically important rare earth material because of its unique properties and various engineering and biological applications. A facile and rapid method has been developed to prepare ceria nanoparticles using microwave with the average size 7 nm in the presence of a set of ionic liquids based on the bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion and different cations of 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium. The structural features and optical properties of the nanoparticles were determined in depth with X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, N-2 adsorption-desorption technique, dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The energy band gap measurements of nanoparticles of ceria have been carried out by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The surface charge properties of colloidal ceria dispersions in ethylene glycol have been also studied. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on using this type of ionic liquids in ceria nanoparticle synthesis. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A convenient microwave method in preparation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) using an ionic liquid, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide, [P-66614][NTf2], as a green solvent is described in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report for synthesizing any nanoparticle using this ionic liquid. Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide has low interface tension and thus it can enhance the nucleation rate, which is favorable to the formation of smaller ZnONPs. The fabricated ZnONPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The XRD pattern reveals that the ZnONPs have hexagonal wurtzite structure. The strong intensity and narrow width of ZnO diffraction peaks indicate that the resulting nanoparticles are of high crystallinity. The synthesized ZnONPs show direct band gap of 3.43 eV. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of ZnONPs dispersed in ethylene glycol at room temperature revealed a blue-shifted onset of absorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The oxidation of six charged iron(III) tetraarylporphyrins with chemical oxidants has been investigated. In aqueous solution each can be converted by tert-butyl hydroperoxide or monopersulphate into its corresponding oxoiron(IV) porphyrin, whereas in methanol only the iron(III) tetra(N-methylpyridyl)porphyrins form detectable ferryl porphyrins at ambient temperatures. On standing, the iron species revert to the parent porphyrin with a small loss due to non-reversible oxidative destruction. That the oxidised porphyrin intermediates are oxoiron(IV) species has been determined using UV-VIS, resonance Raman, H1 NMR and EPR spectroscopy.

The electrochemistry of HgCl(2) and [Hg(NTf(2))(2)] ([NTf(2)](-) = bis-{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide) has been studied in room temperature ionic liquids. It has been found that the cyclic voltammetry of Hg(II) is strongly dependent on a number of factors (e.g., concentration, anions present in the mixture, and nature of the working electrode) and differs from that found in other media. Depending on conditions, the cyclic voltammetry of Hg(II) can give rise to one, two, or four reduction peaks, whereas the reverse oxidative scans show two to four peaks. Diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction have been used to aid the assignment of the voltammetric waves.

Two stable nanofluids comprising of mixed valent copper(I,II) oxide clusters (<1 nm) suspended in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, [C(4)mim][OAc], and copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (<50 nm) suspended in trioctyl(dodecyl) phosphonium acetate, [P-88812][OAc], were synthesised in a facile one-pot reaction from solutions of copper(II) acetate hydrate in the corresponding ionic liquids. Formation of the nanostructures was studied using 13C NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From a solution of Cu(OAc)2 in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, [C2mim][OAc], crystals were obtained that revealed the structure of [C2mim][Cu3(OAc)5(OH)2(H2O)]center dot H2O, indicating the formation of copper hydroxo-clusters in the course of the reaction. Synthesised nanostructures were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Physical properties of the prepared IL-nanofluids were examined using IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and densitometry.

The electrochemistry of elemental sulfur (S-8) and the polysulfides Na2S4 and Na2S6 has been studied for the first time in nonchloroaluminate ionic liquids. The cyclic voltammetry of S-8 in the ionic liquids is different to the behavior reported in some organic solvents, with two reductions and one oxidation peak observed. Supported by in situ UV-vis spectro-electrochemical experiments, the main reduction products of S-8 in [C(4)mim][DCA] ([C(4)mim] = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium; DCA = dicyanamide) have been identified as s(6)(2-) and S-4(2-), and plausible pathways for the formation of these species are proposed. Dissociation and/or disproportionation of the polyanions S-6(2-) and S-4(2-) appears to be slow in the ionic liquid, with only small amounts of the blue radical species S3(center dot-) formed in the solutions at r.t., in contrast with that observed in most molecular solvents.
