Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the comorbidities related to obesity. Liver biopsy has been used as the "gold standard" for the diagnosis, grading, and prognosis of obese patients. The objective of the present study was to evaluate clinical predictors of more advanced stages of NAFLD. In this retrospective study we assessed several physical and laboratorial factors, including some cytokines, in morbidly obese patients submitted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass that could be related to the diagnosis and staging of NAFLD. Fragments of the livers were obtained from wedge biopsies during operation. The medical records of 259 patients were studied. The patients were divided into four groups: normal hepatic biopsy, steatosis, mild nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and moderate and severe NASH. There were no differences in cytokine levels among groups. The triglyceride levels were the only variable that could stratify the grades of NAFLD and also differentiate from normal livers in the female patients. Also in this group, the aminotransferases and GGT levels and fasting glucose were predictors of the more advanced stages of NASH, while BMI and weight were predictors of the more advanced stages of NASH in male patients. There are no available markers in clinical practice to detect the initial stages of NAFLD. It is very important to perform a liver biopsy in all patients submitted to bariatric surgery and in obese patients with no indication to be operated in the presence of elevated blood levels of aminotransferases, GGT, and fasting glucose.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: DON, a serious complication of GO, is frequently difficult to diagnose clinically in its early stages because of confounding signs and symptoms of congestive orbitopathy. We evaluated the ability of square area measurements of orbital apex crowding, calculated with MDCT, to detect DON. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients with GO were studied prospectively with complete neuro-ophthalmologic examination and MDCT scanning. Square measurements were taken from coronal sections 12 mm, 18 mm, and 24 mm from the interzygomatic line. The ratio between the extraocular muscle area and the orbital bone area was used as a Cl. Intracranial fat prolapse through the superior orbital fissure was recorded as present or absent. Severity of optic nerve crowding was also subjectively graded on corona! images. Orbits were divided into 2 groups (with or without clinical evidence of DON) and compared. RESULTS: Ninety-five orbits (36 with and 59 without DON) were studied. The CIs at all 3 levels and the subjective crowding score were significantly greater in orbits with DON (P<.001). No significant difference was observed regarding intracranial fat prolapse (P=.105). The area under the ROC curves was 0.91, 0.93, and 0.87 for CIs at 12, 18, and 24 mm, respectively. The best performance was at 18 mm, where a cutoff value of 57.5% corresponded to 91.7% sensitivity, 89.8% specificity, and an odds ratio of 97.2 for detecting DON. A significant correlation (P<.001) between the CIs and VF defects was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Orbital Cls based on area measurements were found to predict DON more reliably than subjective grading of orbital crowding or intracranial fat prolapse.

Introduction. Physical exercise including pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training seems to improve the sexual function of women with urinary incontinence. This effect in postmenopausal women who are continent has not yet been determined. Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a 3-month physical exercise protocol (PEP) on the sexual function and mood of postmenopausal women. Methods. Thirty-two sedentary, continent, sexually active women who had undergone menopause no more than 5 years earlier and who had follicle stimulating hormone levels of at least 40 mIU/mL were enrolled into this longitudinal study. All women had the ability to contract their PFMs, as assessed by vaginal bimanual palpation. Muscle strength was graded according to the Oxford Modified Grading Scale (OMGS). A PEP was performed under the guidance of a physiotherapist (M. M. F.) twice weekly for 3 months and at home three times per week. All women completed the Sexual Quotient-Female Version (SQ-F) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) before and after the PEP. Main Outcome Measures. SQ-F to assess sexual function, HASDS to assess mood, and OMGS to grade pelvic floor muscle strength. Results. Thirty-two women (24 married women, eight women in consensual unions) completed the PEP. Following the PEP, there was a significant increase in OMGS score (2.59 +/- 1.24 vs. 3.40 +/- 1.32, P < 0.0001) and a significant decrease in the number of women suffering from anxiety (P < 0.01), but there was no effect on sexual function. Conclusion. Implementation of our PEP seemed to reduce anxiety and improve pelvic floor muscular strength in sedentary and continent postmenopausal women. However, our PEP did not improve sexual function. Uncontrolled variables, such as participation in a long-term relationship and menopause status, may have affected our results. We suggest that a randomized controlled trial be performed to confirm our results. Lara LAS, Montenegro ML, Franco MM, Abreu DCC, Rosa e Silva ACJS, Ferreira CHJ. Is the sexual satisfaction of postmenopausal women enhanced by physical exercise and pelvic floor muscle training? J Sex Med 2012; 9: 218-223.

Evaluation of outcomes after aesthetic surgery still is a challenge in plastic surgery. The evaluation frequently is based on subjective criteria. This study used a new clinical grading scale to evaluate aesthetic results for plastic surgeries to the abdomen. The method scores each of the following five parameters: volume of subcutaneous tissue, contour, excess of skin, aspect of the navel, and quality of the scar on the abdominal wall. The scale options are 0 (poor), 1 (fair), and 2 (good), and the total rate can range from 0 to 10. The study included 40 women ages 18-53 years. Of these 40 women, 20 underwent traditional abdominoplasty, and 20 had liposuction alone. Preoperatively and at least 1 year later, photographic results were analyzed and scored by three independent plastic surgeons. In the abdominoplasty group, the average grade rose from 2.9 +/- A 0.4 to 6.8 +/- A 0.4 postoperatively. In the liposuction group, the average grade was 5.3 +/- A 0.5 preoperatively and 7.7 +/- A 0.4 postoperatively. In both groups, the average postoperative grade was significantly higher than the preoperative grade. The mean scores for groups A and L were significantly different, demonstrating that the scale was sensitive in identifying different anatomic abnormalities in the abdomen. The rating scale used for the aesthetic evaluation of the abdomen was effective in the analysis of two different procedures: conventional abdominoplasty and liposuction. Abdominoplasty provided the greater gain according to a comparison of the pre- and postoperative scores.

This study aimed to identify the CD24 and CD44 immunophenotypes within invasive ductal breast carcinoma (I DC) subgroups defined by immunohistochesmistry markers and to determine its influence on prognosis as well as its association with the expression of Ki-67, cytokeratins (CK5 and CK 18) and claudin-7. Immunohistochemical expression of CD44 and CD24 alone or in combination was investigated in 95 IDC cases arranged in a tissue microarray (TMA). The association with subgroups defined as luminal A and B; HER2 rich and triple negative, or with the other markers and prognosis was analyzed. CD44(+)/CD24(-) and CD44(-)/CD24(+) were respectively present in 8.4% and 16.8% of the tumors, a lack of both proteins was detected in 6.3%, while CD441(-)/CD24(+) was observed in 45.3% of the tumors. Although there was no significant correlation between subgroups and different phenotypes, the CD44(+)/CD24(-) phenotype was more common in the basal subgroups but absent in HER2 tumors, whereas luminal tumors are enriched in CD44(-)/CD24(+) and CD44(+)/CD24(+) cells. The frequency of CD44(+)/CD24(-) or CD44(-)/CD24(+) was not associated with clinical characteristics or biological markers. There was also no significant association of these phenotypes with the event free (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Single CD44(+) was evident in 57.9% of the tumors and was marginally associated to grading and not to any other tumor characteristics as well as OS and DFS. CD24(+) was positive in 74.7% of the tumors, showing a significant association with estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and Ki-67 and a marginal association with CKI8 and claudin-7. Expression of claudin-7 and Ki-67 did not associate with the cancer subgroups, while a positive association between CK18 and the luminal subgroups was found (P=0.03). CK5, CK18 and Ki-67 expression had no influence in OS or DFS. Single CD24(+) (P=0.07) and claudin-7 positivity (P=0.05) were associated with reduced time of recurrence, suggesting a contribution of these markers to aggressiveness of breast cancer.

Background: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) can be performed in the prone or in the supine position. Comparisons between the two techniques in obese patients are rare in the current literature. Methods: The records of obese patients (body mass index >30) who underwent PCNL in the prone or complete supine positions were reviewed. All patients had a noncontrast CT before and after the procedure. Stones were graded according to the Guy stone score and complications according to the Clavien grading. The stone-free rates, operative time, surgical complications, and hospital stay were analyzed. Results: A total of 56 PCNL were performed in 42 patients. Twenty-four PCNL were performed in the prone and 32 in the total supine position. Stone-free rate on the first postoperative day was 50% in the prone and 46.9% in the supine position (P = 1.0). Final stone-free rates were 83.3% and 78.1%, respectively (P = 0.74). Mean operative time was 164.6 minutes in the prone and 120.3 minutes in the supine position (P = 0.0017), and hospital stay was 4.38 and 2.68 days (P = 0.014), respectively. The transfusion rate was 20.8% in the prone and zero in the supine position patients (P = 0.01). Excluding Guy IV stones, transfusion rate was 8.3% in the prone position (P = 0.1). Significant surgical complications rate was 12.5% in the prone and 3.1% in the supine position (P = 0.302). Conclusion: PCNL performed in the prone or in the complete supine position in obese patients presents similar outcomes. The supine decubitus position has the advantages of a significantly shorter operative time and hospital stay.

OBJECTIVES: Oral mucositis is a complication frequently associated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, decreasing a patient’s quality of life and increasing the occurrence of opportunistic infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and severity of oral mucositis and to assess the correlation of this disease with the oral health of an individual at the time of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. METHODS: Before transplantation, patients’ oral health and inflammatory conditions were determined using the gingival index and the plaque index, which are based on gingival bleeding and the presence of dental plaque, respectively. Additionally, the dental health status was determined using the decayed, missing, and filled teeth index. The monitoring of oral mucositis was based on the World Health Organization grading system and was performed for five periods: from Day 0 to D+5, from D+6 to D+10, from D+11 to D+15, from D+16 to D+20, and from D+21 to D+30. RESULTS: A total of 97 patients (56% male and 44% female) who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo between January 2008 and July 2009 were prospectively examined. The incidence of ulcerative mucositis was highest from days +6 to +10 and from days +11 to +15 in the patients who underwent autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, respectively. CONCLUSION: The data, including the dental plaque and periodontal status data, showed that these oral health factors were predictive of the incidence and severity of oral mucositis in a cohort of patients with similar conditioning regimens before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Objectives: The objective of this study was to apply low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to accelerate the recovery process of a child patient with Bell's palsy (BP). Design: This was a prospective study. Subject: The subject was a three-year-old boy with a sudden onset of facial asymmetry due to an unknown cause. Materials and methods: The low-level laser source used was a gallium aluminum arsenide semiconductor diode laser device (660nm and 780 nm). No steroids or other medications were given to the child. The laser beam with a 0.04-cm2 spot area, and an aperture with approximately 1-mm diameter, was applied in a continuous emission mode in direct contact with the facial area. The duration of a laser session was between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the chosen points and the area being treated. Light was applied 10 seconds per point on a maximum number of 80 points, when the entire affected (right) side of the face was irradiated, based on the small laser beam spot size. According to the acupuncture literature, this treatment could also be carried out using 10-20 Chinese acupuncture points, located unilaterally on the face. In this case study, more points were used because the entire affected side of the face (a large area) was irradiated instead of using acupuncture points. Outcome measures: The House-Brackmann grading system was used to monitor the evolution of facial nerve motor function. Photographs were taken after every session, always using the same camera and the same magnitude. The three-year-old boy recovered completely from BP after 11 sessions of LLLT. There were 4 sessions a week for the first 2 weeks, and the total treatment time was 3 weeks. Results: The result of this study was the improvement of facial movement and facial symmetry, with complete reestablishment to normality. Conclusions: LLLT may be an alternative to speed up facial normality in pediatric BP.

This thesis is focused on the metabolomic study of human cancer tissues by ex vivo High Resolution-Magic Angle Spinning (HR-MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This new technique allows for the acquisition of spectra directly on intact tissues (biopsy or surgery), and it has become very important for integrated metabonomics studies. The objective is to identify metabolites that can be used as markers for the discrimination of the different types of cancer, for the grading, and for the assessment of the evolution of the tumour. Furthermore, an attempt to recognize metabolites, that although involved in the metabolism of tumoral tissues in low concentration, can be important modulators of neoplastic proliferation, was performed. In addition, NMR data was integrated with statistical techniques in order to obtain semi-quantitative information about the metabolite markers. In the case of gliomas, the NMR study was correlated with gene expression of neoplastic tissues. Chapter 1 begins with a general description of a new “omics” study, the metabolomics. The study of metabolism can contribute significantly to biomedical research and, ultimately, to clinical medical practice. This rapidly developing discipline involves the study of the metabolome: the total repertoire of small molecules present in cells, tissues, organs, and biological fluids. Metabolomic approaches are becoming increasingly popular in disease diagnosis and will play an important role on improving our understanding of cancer mechanism. Chapter 2 addresses in more detail the basis of NMR Spectroscopy, presenting the new HR-MAS NMR tool, that is gaining importance in the examination of tumour tissues, and in the assessment of tumour grade. Some advanced chemometric methods were used in an attempt to enhance the interpretation and quantitative information of the HR-MAS NMR data are and presented in chapter 3. Chemometric methods seem to have a high potential in the study of human diseases, as it permits the extraction of new and relevant information from spectroscopic data, allowing a better interpretation of the results. Chapter 4 reports results obtained from HR-MAS NMR analyses performed on different brain tumours: medulloblastoma, meningioms and gliomas. The medulloblastoma study is a case report of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) localised in the cerebellar region by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in a 3-year-old child. In vivo single voxel 1H MRS shows high specificity in detecting the main metabolic alterations in the primitive cerebellar lesion; which consist of very high amounts of the choline-containing compounds and of very low levels of creatine derivatives and N-acetylaspartate. Ex vivo HR-MAS NMR, performed at 9.4 Tesla on the neoplastic specimen collected during surgery, allows the unambiguous identification of several metabolites giving a more in-depth evaluation of the metabolic pattern of the lesion. The ex vivo HR-MAS NMR spectra show higher detail than that obtained in vivo. In addition, the spectroscopic data appear to correlate with some morphological features of the medulloblastoma. The present study shows that ex vivo HR-MAS 1H NMR is able to strongly improve the clinical possibility of in vivo MRS and can be used in conjunction with in vivo spectroscopy for clinical purposes. Three histological subtypes of meningiomas (meningothelial, fibrous and oncocytic) were analysed both by in vivo and ex vivo MRS experiments. The ex vivo HR-MAS investigations are very helpful for the assignment of the in vivo resonances of human meningiomas and for the validation of the quantification procedure of in vivo MR spectra. By using one- and two dimensional experiments, several metabolites in different histological subtypes of meningiomas, were identified. The spectroscopic data confirmed the presence of the typical metabolites of these benign neoplasms and, at the same time, that meningomas with different morphological characteristics have different metabolic profiles, particularly regarding macromolecules and lipids. The profile of total choline metabolites (tCho) and the expression of the Kennedy pathway genes in biopsies of human gliomas were also investigated using HR-MAS NMR, and microfluidic genomic cards. 1H HR-MAS spectra, allowed the resolution and relative quantification by LCModel of the resonances from choline (Cho), phosphorylcholine (PC) and glycerolphorylcholine (GPC), the three main components of the combined tCho peak observed in gliomas by in vivo 1H MRS spectroscopy. All glioma biopsies depicted an increase in tCho as calculated from the addition of Cho, PC and GPC HR-MAS resonances. However, the increase was constantly derived from augmented GPC in low grade NMR gliomas or increased PC content in the high grade gliomas, respectively. This circumstance allowed the unambiguous discrimination of high and low grade gliomas by 1H HR-MAS, which could not be achieved by calculating the tCho/Cr ratio commonly used by in vivo 1H MR spectroscopy. The expression of the genes involved in choline metabolism was investigated in the same biopsies. The present findings offer a convenient procedure to classify accurately glioma grade using 1H HR-MAS, providing in addition the genetic background for the alterations of choline metabolism observed in high and low gliomas grade. Chapter 5 reports the study on human gastrointestinal tract (stomach and colon) neoplasms. The human healthy gastric mucosa, and the characteristics of the biochemical profile of human gastric adenocarcinoma in comparison with that of healthy gastric mucosa were analyzed using ex vivo HR-MAS NMR. Healthy human mucosa is mainly characterized by the presence of small metabolites (more than 50 identified) and macromolecules. The adenocarcinoma spectra were dominated by the presence of signals due to triglycerides, that are usually very low in healthy gastric mucosa. The use of spin-echo experiments enable us to detect some metabolites in the unhealthy tissues and to determine their variation with respect to the healthy ones. Then, the ex vivo HR-MAS NMR analysis was applied to human gastric tissue, to obtain information on the molecular steps involved in the gastric carcinogenesis. A microscopic investigation was also carried out in order to identify and locate the lipids in the cellular and extra-cellular environments. Correlation of the morphological changes detected by transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy, with the metabolic profile of gastric mucosa in healthy, gastric atrophy autoimmune diseases (AAG), Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis and adenocarcinoma subjects, were obtained. These ultrastructural studies of AAG and gastric adenocarcinoma revealed lipid intra- and extra-cellularly accumulation associated with a severe prenecrotic hypoxia and mitochondrial degeneration. A deep insight into the metabolic profile of human healthy and neoplastic colon tissues was gained using ex vivo HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy in combination with multivariate methods: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA). The NMR spectra of healthy tissues highlight different metabolic profiles with respect to those of neoplastic and microscopically normal colon specimens (these last obtained at least 15 cm far from the adenocarcinoma). Furthermore, metabolic variations are detected not only for neoplastic tissues with different histological diagnosis, but also for those classified identical by histological analysis. These findings suggest that the same subclass of colon carcinoma is characterized, at a certain degree, by metabolic heterogeneity. The statistical multivariate approach applied to the NMR data is crucial in order to find metabolic markers of the neoplastic state of colon tissues, and to correctly classify the samples. Significant different levels of choline containing compounds, taurine and myoinositol, were observed. Chapter 6 deals with the metabolic profile of normal and tumoral renal human tissues obtained by ex vivo HR-MAS NMR. The spectra of human normal cortex and medulla show the presence of differently distributed osmolytes as markers of physiological renal condition. The marked decrease or disappearance of these metabolites and the high lipid content (triglycerides and cholesteryl esters) is typical of clear cell renal carcinoma (RCC), while papillary RCC is characterized by the absence of lipids and very high amounts of taurine. This research is a contribution to the biochemical classification of renal neoplastic pathologies, especially for RCCs, which can be evaluated by in vivo MRS for clinical purposes. Moreover, these data help to gain a better knowledge of the molecular processes envolved in the onset of renal carcinogenesis.

Breast carcinoma, one of the most frequent malignancies in women, is a complex disease in which a number of different factors combine to drive pathogenesis. The biopathological characterization of these tumors is essential to determine their aggressiveness and to find the most appropriate therapy. As in others neoplasms, the deregulation of signal transduction pathways is frequently responsible for conferring selective biological advantages to the tumor. Phosphoinositides play an essential role in diverse cellular functions, their metabolism is highly active, and is tightly controlled. Among the enzymes implicated in this pathway, phospholipase C beta 1 (PLCβ1) is one of the key regulators, both at the cytoplasmic and the nuclear level. The PLCβ1 gene maps onto the short arm of chromosome 20, a region that has been shown to be altered in several solid tumors, including breast cancer. In the present study a FISH approach was used to investigate the genetic alterations of the PLCβ1 gene in various classes of breast cancer which differ in their invasiveness and proliferation status, according to their mitotic index. The overall aim was to find out whether this enzyme could be a suitable prognostic marker for this neoplasm. Our results show that 83% of cases had aneusomies at the 20p12 level, and the most frequent alteration is a gain in this specific locus. Indeed, we found that this amplification is not related to the invasion status since there were no differences in amplified tumor frequencies between in situ and invasive breast cancer. On the contrary, the gain of PLCβ1 was significantly related to the mitotic index (p = 0.001). To verify if the change in genetic dosage influences the expression of PLCβ1 we performed Real Time PCR and Immunohystochemical analysis. Our results confirmed that amplified tumors have higher levels of PLCβ1 mRNA, which is the sum of the two splicing isoforms 1a and 1b. On the other hand, even if protein levels were higher in the majority of cases compared to the nontumoral specimens, there were no significant associations between gain and overexpression. Finally, the significant association between the amplification of PLCβ1 and others important clinicopathological parameters, such as grading and hormonal receptors status, confirmed a correlation of this enzyme with the aggressiveness of breast cancer. This suggests that PLCβ1 has the potential to be a prognostic marker in these tumors. However, further work needs to be carried out to validate these preliminary findings.

In the past a change in temperature of 5°C most often occurred over intervals of thousands of years. According to estimates by the IPCC, in the XXI century is expected an increase in average temperatures in Europe between 1.8 and 4.0°C in the best case caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other GHG from human activities. As well as on the environment and economic context, global warming will have effects even on road safety. Several studies have already shown how increasing temperature may cause a worsening of some types of road surface damages, especially rutting, a permanent deformation of the road structures consisting in the formation of a longitudinal depression in the wheelpath, mostly due to the rheological behavior of bitumen. This deformation evolves during the hot season because of the heating capacity of the asphalt layers, in fact, the road surface temperature is up to 24°C higher than air. In this thesis, through the use of Wheeltrack test, it was studied the behavior of some types of asphalt concrete mixtures subjected to fatigue testing at different temperatures. The objectives of this study are: to determine the strain variation of different bituminous mixture subjected to fatigue testing at different temperature conditions; to investigate the effect of aggregates, bitumen and mixtures’ characteristics on rutting. Samples were made in the laboratory mostly using an already prepared mixtures, the others preparing the asphalt concrete from the grading curve and bitumen content. The same procedure was performed for each specimen: preparation, compaction using the roller compactor, cooling and heating before the test. The tests were carried out at 40 - 50 - 60°C in order to obtain the evolution of deformation with temperature variation, except some mixtures for which the tests were carried out only at 50°C. In the elaboration of the results were considered testing parameters, component properties and the characteristics of the mixture. Among the testing parameters, temperature was varied for each sample. The mixtures responded to this variation with a different behavior (linear logarithmic and exponential) not directly correlated with the asphalt characteristics; the others parameters as load, passage frequency and test condition were kept constant. According to the results obtained, the main contribution to deformation is due to the type of binder used, it was found that the modified bitumen have a better response than the same mixtures containing traditional bitumen; to the porosity which affects negatively the behavior of the samples and to the homogeneity ceteris paribus. The granulometric composition did not seem to have interfered with the results. Overall has emerged at working temperature, a decisive importance of bitumen composition, than the other characteristics of the mixture, that tends to disappear with heating in favor of increased dependence of rutting resistance from the granulometric composition of the sample considered. In particular it is essential, rather than the mechanical characteristics of the binder, its chemical properties given by the polymeric modification. To confirm some considered results, the maximum bulk density and the air voids content were determined. Tests have been conducted in the laboratories of the Civil Engineering Department at NTNU in Trondheim according to European Standards.

In this dissertation the pyrolytic conversion of biomass into chemicals and fuels was investigated from the analytical point of view. The study was focused on the liquid (bio-oil) and solid (char) fractions obtainable from biomass pyrolysis. The drawbacks of Py-GC-MS described so far were partially solved by coupling different analytical configurations (Py-GC-MS, Py-GC-MIP-AED and off-line Py-SPE and Py-SPME-GC-MS with derivatization procedures). The application of different techniques allowed a satisfactory comparative analysis of pyrolysis products of different biomass and a high throughput screening on effect of 33 catalysts on biomass pyrolysis. As the results of the screening showed, the most interesting catalysts were those containing copper (able to reduce the high molecular weight fraction of bio-oil without large yield decrease) and H-ZSM-5 (able to entirely convert the bio-oil into “gasoline like” aromatic products). In order to establish the noxious compounds content of the liquid product, a clean-up step was included in the Py-SPE procedure. This allowed to investigate pollutants (PAHs) generation from pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. In fact, bio-oil from non-catalytic pyrolysis of biomass showed a moderate PAHs content, while the use of H-ZSM-5 catalyst for bio-oil up-grading determined an astonishing high production of PAHs (if compared to what observed in alkanes cracking), indicating an important concern in the substitution fossil fuel with bio-oil derived from biomass. Moreover, the analytical procedures developed in this thesis were directly applied for the detailed study of the most useful process scheme and up-grading route to chemical intermediates (anhydrosugars), transportation fuels or commodity chemicals (aromatic hydrocarbons). In the applied study, poplar and microalgae biomass were investigated and overall GHGs balance of pyrolysis of agricultural residues in Ravenna province was performed. A special attention was put on the comparison of the effect of bio-char different use (fuel or as soil conditioner) on the soil health and GHGs emissions.

The PhD thesis at hand consists of three parts and describes the petrogenetic evolution of Uralian-Alaskan-type mafic ultramafic complexes in the Ural Mountains, Russia. Uralian-Alaskan-type mafic-ultramafic complexes are recognized as a distinct class of intrusions. Characteristic petrologic features are the concentric zonation of a central dunite body grading outward into wehrlite, clinopyroxenite and gabbro, the absence of orthopyroxene and frequently occurring platinum group element (PGE) mineralization. In addition, the presence of ferric iron-rich spinel discriminates Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes from most other mafic ultramafic rock assemblages. The studied Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes (Nizhnii Tagil, Kytlym and Svetley Bor) belong to the southern part of a 900 km long, N–S-trending chain of similar intrusions between the Main Uralian Fault to the west and the Serov-Mauk Fault to the east. The first chapter of this thesis studies the evolution of the ultramafic rocks tracing the compositional variations of rock forming and accessory minerals. The comparison of the chemical composition of olivine, clinopyroxene and chromian spinel from the Urals with data from other localities indicates that they are unique intrusions having a characteristic spinel and clinopyroxene chemistry. Laser ablation-ICPMS (LA-ICPMS ) analyses of trace element concentrations in clinopyroxene are used to calculate the composition of their parental melt which is characterized by enriched LREE (0.5-5.2 prim. mantle) and other highly incompatible elements (U, Th, Ba, Rb) relative to the HREE (0.25-2.0 prim. mantle). A subduction-related geotectonic setting is indicated by a positive anomaly for Sr and negative anomalies for Ti, Zr and Hf. The mineral compositions monitor the evolution of the parental magmas and decipher differences between the studied complexes. In addition, the observed variation in LREE/HREE (for example La/Lu = 2-24) can be best explained with the model of an episodically replenished and erupted open magma chamber system with the extensive fractionation of olivine, spinel and clinopyroxene. The data also show that ankaramites in a subduction-related geotectonic setting could represent parental magmas of Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes. The second chapter of the thesis discusses the chemical variation of major and trace elements in rock-forming minerals of the mafic rocks. Electron microprobe and LA-ICPMS analyses are used to quantitatively describe the petrogenetic relationship between the different gabbroic lithologies and their genetic link to the ultramafic rocks. The composition of clinopyroxene identifies the presence of melts with different trace element abundances on the scale of a thin section and suggests the presence of open system crustal magma chambers. Even on a regional scale the large variation of trace element concentrations and ratios in clinopyroxene (e.g. La/Lu = 3-55) is best explained by the interaction of at least two fundamentally different magma types at various stages of fractionation. This requires the existence of a complex magma chamber system fed with multiple pulses of magmas from at least two different coeval sources in a subduction-related environment. One source produces silica saturated Island arc tholeiitic melts. The second source produces silica undersaturated, ultra-calcic, alkaline melts. Taken these data collectively, the mixing of the two different parental magmas is the dominant petrogenetic process explaining the observed chemical variations. The results further imply that this is an intrinsic feature of Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes and probably of many similar mafic-ultramafic complexes world-wide. In the third chapter of this thesis the major element composition of homogeneous and exsolved spinel is used as a petrogenetic indicator. Homogeneous chromian spinel in dunites and wehrlites monitors the fractionation during the early stages of the magma chamber and the onset of clinopyroxene fractionation as well as the reaction of spinel with interstitial liquid. Exsolved spinel is present in mafic and ultramafic rocks from all three studied complexes. Its composition lies along a solvus curve which defines an equilibrium temperature of 600°C, given that spinel coexists with olivine. This temperature is considered to be close to the temperature of the host rocks into which the studied Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes intruded. The similarity of the exsolution temperatures in the different complexes over a distance of several hundred kilometres implies a regional tectonic event that terminated the exsolution process. This event is potentially associated with the final exhumation of the Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes along the Main Uralian Fault and the Serov-Mauk Fault in the Uralian fold belt.
