The evolution of crystallographic texture in a nanocrystalline nickel-20 wt% cobalt alloy has been investigated for deformation up to large strains. The effect of texture on magnetic properties has been evaluated. The material shows characteristic copper-type texture at large strain levels. Microstructural examinations indicate that the evolution of texture is assisted by deformation-induced grain growth. The values of saturation magnetization and coercivity have been correlated with the crystallographic texture and grain size. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Scheelite-type MWO4 (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba) nanophosphors were synthesized by the precipitation method. All compounds crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group 141/a (No. 88). Scherrer's and TEM results revealed that the average crystallite size varies from 32 to 55 nm. FE-SEM illustrate the spherical (CaWO4), bouquet (SrWO4), and fish (BaWO4) like morphologies. PL spectra indicate the broad emission peak maximum at 436 (CaWO4), 440 (SrWO4), and 433 nm (BaWO4) under UV excitation. The calculated CIE color coordinates of MWO4 nanophosphors are close to the commercial BAM and National Television System Committee blue phosphor. The photocatalytic activities of MWO4 were investigated for the degradation of methylene blue dye under UV illumination. At pH 3, BaWO4 nanocatalyst showed 100% dye degradation within 60 min. The photocatalytic activity was in the decreasing order of BaWO4> CaWO4>SrWO4 under both neutral and acidic conditions. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A gradient in the density of hyperpolarization-activated cyclic-nucleotide gated (HCN) channels is necessary for the emergence of several functional maps within hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Here, we systematically analyzed the impact of dendritic atrophy on nine such functional maps, related to input resistance and local/transfer impedance properties, using conductance-based models of hippocampal pyramidal neurons. We introduced progressive dendritic atrophy in a CA1 pyramidal neuron reconstruction through a pruning algorithm, measured all functional maps in each pruned reconstruction, and arrived at functional forms for the dependence of underlying measurements on dendritic length. We found that, across frequencies, atrophied neurons responded with higher efficiency to incoming inputs, and the transfer of signals across the dendritic tree was more effective in an atrophied reconstruction. Importantly, despite the presence of identical HCN-channel density gradients, spatial gradients in input resistance, local/transfer resonance frequencies and impedance profiles were significantly constricted in reconstructions with dendrite atrophy, where these physiological measurements across dendritic locations converged to similar values. These results revealed that, in atrophied dendritic structures, the presence of an ion channel density gradient alone was insufficient to sustain homologous functional maps along the same neuronal topograph. We assessed the biophysical basis for these conclusions and found that this atrophy-induced constriction of functional maps was mediated by an enhanced spatial spread of the influence of an HCN-channel cluster in atrophied trees. These results demonstrated that the influence fields of ion channel conductances need to be localized for channel gradients to express themselves as homologous functional maps, suggesting that ion channel gradients are necessary but not sufficient for the emergence of functional maps within single neurons.

The synthesis of the heterobinuclear copper-zinc complex CuZn(bz)(3)(bpy)(2)]ClO4 (bz = benzoate) from benzoic acid and bipyridine is described. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the heterobinuclear complex reveals the geometry of the benzoato bridged Cu(II)-Zn(II) centre. The copper or zinc atom is pentacoordinate, with two oxygen atoms from bridging benzoato groups and two nitrogen atoms from one bipyridine forming an approximate plane and a bridging oxygen atom from a monodentate benzoate group. The Cu-Zn distance is 3.345 angstrom. The complex is normal paramagnetic having mu(eff) value equal to 1.75 BM, ruling out the possibility of Cu-Cu interaction in the structural unit. The ESR spectrum of the complex in CH3CN at RT exhibit an isotropic four line spectrum centred at g = 2.142 and hyperfine coupling constants A(av) = 63 x 10(-4) cm(-1), characteristic of a mononuclear square-pyramidal copper(II) complexes. At LNT, the complex shows an isotropic spectrum with g(parallel to) = 2.254 and g(perpendicular to) =2.071 and A(parallel to) = 160 x 10(-4) cm(-1). The Hamiltonian parameters are characteristic of distorted square pyramidal geometry. Cyclic voltammetric studies of the complex have indicated quasi-reversible behaviour in acetonitrile solution. Cast Mg/SiCp and AZ91/SiCp composites were successfully hot extruded vis-a-vis cast and unreinforced Mg and AZ91 alloy up to low (R=15:1) and high (R=54:1) extrusion ratios at 350 degrees C. Significant matrix grain refinement was noticed after extrusion due to dynamic recrystallization; the degree of refinement being relatively higher for the two composites. The AZ91 based materials (AZ91 and AZ91/SiCp) exhibited comparatively finer grain size both in cast condition and after extrusion due to strong pinning effect from alloying elements as well as Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase. Compositional analyses eliminated the possibility of any interfacial reaction between matrix (Mg/AZ91) and second phase reinforcement (SiCp) in case of the composites. Texture evolution shows the formation of < 10 (1) over bar0 >parallel to ED texture fibre for all the materials after extrusion irrespective of SiCp addition or alloying which is primarily due to the deformation of the matrix phase. Micro-hardness did not significantly increased on extrusion in comparison to the respective cast materials for both composites and unreinforced alloys. Dynamic mechanical analysis, however, confirmed that the damping properties were affected by the extrusion ratio and to a lesser extent, due to the presence of second phase at room temperature as well as at higher temperature (300 degrees C). Controlling the band gap by tuning the lattice structure through pressure engineering is a relatively new route for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we investigate the electronic structure and lattice vibrational dynamics of the distorted monolayer 1T-MoS2 (1T') and the monolayer 2H-MoS2 via a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The direct optical band gap of the monolayer 2H-MoS2 increases by 11.7% from 1.85 to 2.08 eV, which is the highest reported for a 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) material. DFT calculations reveal a subsequent decrease in the band gap with eventual metallization of the monolayer 2H-MoS2, an overall complex structureproperty relation due to the rich band structure of MoS2. Remarkably, the metastable 1T'-MoS2 metallic state remains invariant with pressure, with the J(2), A(1g), and E(2)g modes becoming dominant at high pressures. This substantial reversible tunability of the electronic and vibrational properties of the MoS2 family can be extended to other 2D TMDs. These results present an important advance toward controlling the band structure and optoelectronic properties of monolayer MoS2 via pressure, which has vital implications for enhanced device applications.

A series of Bi1-xEuxOX (X = F and Br; x = 0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) phosphors were synthesized at relatively low temperature and short duration (500 degrees C, 1 h). Rietveld refinement results verified that all the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The magnetic dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) transition dominates the emission of BiOF:Eu3+, while the electric dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) peak was stronger in BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors. The evaluated CIE color coordinates for Bi0.95Eu0.05OBr (0.632, 0.358) are close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ (0.645, 0.347) and Y2O2S:Eu3+ (0.647, 0.343) red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition rates (A), branching ratios (beta), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. It was observed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have a long lifetime (tau) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) as compared to reported Eu3+ doped materials. Furthermore, these compounds exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye under visible light irradiation. The determined radiative properties and photocatalytic results revealed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have potential applications in energy and environmental remedies, such as to develop red phosphors for white light-emitting diodes, red lasers and to remove toxic organic industrial effluents.

Cubic ZrO2: Fe3+ (0.5-4 mol%) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized via bin-inspired, inexpensive and simple route using Phyllanthus acidus as fuel. PXRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, UV absorption and PL studies were performed to ascertain the formation of NPs. Rietveld analysis confirmed the formation of cubic structure. The influence of Fe3+ on the structure, morphology, UV absorption, PL emission and photocatalytic activity of NPs were investigated. The CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.36, 0.41) show that NPs could be a promising candidate for white LEDs. The influence of Fe3+ on ZrO2 matrix for photocatalytic degradation of AO7 was evaluated under UVA and Sunlight irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of spherical shaped ZrO2: Fe3+ (2 mol%) under UVA light was attributed to dopant concentration, crystallite size, narrow band gap, textural properties and capability for reducing the electron-hole pair recombination. The trend of inhibitory effect in the presence of different radical scavengers were followed the order SO42- > Cl- > C2H5OH > HCO3- > CO32-. The recycling catalytic ability of the ZrO2: Fe3+ (2 mol%) was also evaluated with a negligible decrease in the degradation efficiency even after the sixth successive run. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Manganese dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction route at different growth temperatures of 40 degrees C, 80 degrees C, 100 degrees C and were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) analysis. FESEM results show that on increasing growth temperature the morphology changes from clusters into mixture of rods and flakes. XPS analysis reveals the formation of MnO2. Then these particles were immobilized on Pt electrode. A platinum (Pt) electrode modified with low dimensional MnO2 was investigated as a chronoamperometric (CA) sensor for hydrogen peroxide sensing (H2O2). The sample prepared at 100 degrees C shows good electrocatalytic ability for H2O2 sensing when compared with the samples prepared at 40 degrees C and 80 degrees C. At an operating potential of 0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl catalytic oxidation of the analyte is measured for chronoamperometric (CA) monitoring. The CA signals are linearly proportional to the concentration of H2O2. It is also found that the morphology of the nanostructure plays a vital role in the detection of H2O2. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The present investigation deals with grain boundary engineering of a modified austenitic stainless steel to obtain a material with enhanced properties. Three types of processing that are generally in agreement with the principles of grain boundary engineering were carried out. The parameters for each of the processing routes were fine-tuned and optimized. The as-processed samples were characterized for microstructure and texture. The influence of processing on properties was estimated by evaluating the room temperature mechanical properties through micro-tensile tests. It was possible to obtain remarkably high fractions of CSL boundaries in certain samples. The results of the micro-tensile tests indicate that the grain boundary engineered samples exhibited higher ductility than the conventionally processed samples. The investigation provides a detailed account of the approach to be adopted for GBE processing of this grade of steel. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of combined additions of Ca and Sb on the microstructure and tensile properties of AZ91D alloy fabricated by squeeze-casting have been investigated. For comparison, the same has also been studied with and without individual additions of Ca and Sb. The results indicate that both individual and combined additions refine the grain size and beta-Mg17Al12 phase, which is more pronounced with combined additions. Besides alpha-Mg and beta-Mg17Al12 phases, a new reticular Al2Ca and rod-shaped Mg3Sb2 phases are formed following individual additions of Ca and Sb in the AZ91D alloy. With combined additions, an additional Ca2Sb phase is formed suppressing Mg3Sb2 phase. Additions of both Ca and Sb increase yield strength (YS) at both ambient and elevated temperatures up to 200 degrees C. However, both ductility and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decrease first up to 150 degrees C and then increase at 200 degrees C. The increase in YS is attributed to the refinement of grain size, whereas, ductility and UTS are deteriorated by the presence of brittle Al2Ca, Mg3Sb2 and Ca2Sb phases. The best tensile properties are obtained in the AZXY9110 alloy owing to the presence of lesser amount of brittle Al2Ca and Ca2Sb phases resulted from the optimum content of 1.0Ca and 0.3Sb (wt%). The fracture surface of the tensile specimen tested at ambient temperature reveals cleavage failure that changes to quasi-cleavage at 200 degrees C. The squeeze-cast alloys exhibited better tensile properties as compared to that of the gravity-cast alloys nullifying the detrimental effects of Ca and/or Sb additions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies show the eventual charge transfer interaction within the molecule. Thermal studies were also carried out by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTA), and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline strontium hexaferrites SrFe12-2x (Ni2+-Zr4+)(x)O-19] nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by sal gel process. For densification the powders were sintered at 950 degrees C/4 h. The sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area measurement, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The lattice parameter a is almost constant but c increased with x upto 0.8 and then decreased. The frequency dependent complex permittivity (epsilon and epsilon `' and permeability (mu' and mu `') and magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization (M-s), coercive field (H-c) were studied. If is observed that saturation magnetization increased gradually from 57.82 emuig to 67.2 emufg as x increased from 0.2 to 0.4 and then decreased from 672 emufg to 31.63 ernufg for x=1.0. In present study, x=0.4 shows high value of M-s 67.2 emu/g. The real part of permittivity (epsilon') remains constant upto a frequency 1 GHz and increases further with an increase of frequency, a resonance and anti resonance peak was observed above 1 GHz for all the samples. In real part of permeability (mu') the relaxation frequency is observed above 1 GHz for all the samples and it is attributed to the domain wall motion. It is well known that the permeability for polycrystalline ferrites can be described as the superposition of two different magnetizing mechanisms: spin rotation and domain wall motion. These low coercive strontium hexaferrites are suitable for magnetic recording applications in hard disks, floppy disks, video tapes, etc. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present study focuses on developing functionally graded syntactic foams (FGSFs) based on a layered co-curing technique. The FGSFs were characterized for compressive and flexural properties and compared with plain syntactic foams. The results showed that the specific compressive modulus was 3-67% higher in FGSFs compared to plain syntactic foams. FGSF exhibited 5-34% and 34-87% higher specific modulus and strength, respectively in flexural mode. The microscopic examinations of comparative responses of the filler and matrix to deformation suggest that the failure is dominated by the matrix. The gradient in the composition of syntactic foams helps in effectively distributing the stress throughout the microstructure and results in improved mechanical performance of syntactic foams. From the microscopy studies, it is evident that, the failure mechanism in the FGSF under flexural loading is governed by a crack that initiated on the tensile side of the specimen and propagated through the thickness to cause complete fracture. The microscopic observations further clearly demonstrate the existence of seamless interfaces between the layers and a clear difference in the cenosphere concentration across the interface, affirming the gradation in the prepared samples. The results show that appropriate compositions of FGSFs can be selected to develop materials with improved mechanical performance. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:685-693, 2015. This paper reports the structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe-Ga thin films deposited using DC magnetron sputtering technique on Si(100) substrate kept at different temperatures. Structural studies employing X-ray diffraction and TEM revealed the presence of only disordered A2 phase in the film. Columnar growth of nanocrystalline grains from the substrate was observed in the film deposited at room temperature. With increase in substrate temperature the grain size as well as surface roughness was found to increase. The magnetization of the films deposited at higher substrate temperatures were Found to saturate at lower magnetic held as compared to the room temperature deposited Film. Coercivity was found to decrease with increasing substrate temperature upto a minimum value of similar to 2 Oe for the film deposited at 450 degrees C and with further increase in substrate temperature it was found to increase. A maximum magnetostriction of 200 mu-strains was also observed for the film deposited at 450 degrees C. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
